When Twa Flight 3, a twin-engine DC-3 concluding its cross-country route from Indiana to Burbank, California, slammed into Potosi Mountain just outside of Las Vegas in the early evening of January 16, 1942, the movies lost its greatest screwball comedienne.
Carole Lombard was 33 years old, and had just weathered a run of tepidly received dramas to reclaim her stature as one of Hollywood's most dependably hilarious performers via Alfred Hitchcock's "Mr. and Mrs. Smith." She was about to receive another round of critical acclaim for her turn as the Polish theater diva Maria Tura in Ernst Lubitsch's masterful "To Be or Not to Be." She was married to Rhett Butler himself, Clark Gable, and had committed herself to the war effort (she'd been in her home state of Indiana to host a war bond rally). Lombard was as beloved and consequential an actor as there was in the industry, and, just like that,...

Exclusive: When Emmy-nominated EP Christian Beetz set out to explore the story of disgraced former Spanish King Juan Carlos I, he could never have imagined the “nightmare trip” that followed.
As Sky and NBCUniversal Global Distribution prepare to unveil Juan Carlos: Downfall of the King at Mip TV, Beetz revealed to Deadline that he believed he and his production team were being followed and their conversations listened to during the making of the four-parter last year.
“After doing our first round of interviews with journalists we got an anonymous call saying ‘Be careful what you’re doing here’,” he told us. “This was the start of a nightmare trip.”
Beetz believes his emails were being read and phone was being tapped, and his team started taking precautions, including placing their phones in the fridge – a move made famous by Nsa whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Studio Hamburg Enterprises has signed its first-ever co-production deal with Germany’s Gebrueder Beetz Filmproduktion to produce high-end documentary series “Reeperbahn Special Unit 65.” The show is the first non-fiction series to receive an invitation to present at the Berlinale Series Market showcase Up Next: Germany, which runs from Feb. 14-16.
Now in production, “Reeperbahn Special Unit 65” is a cop series that tells the story of FD65, Germany’s first-ever police unit dedicated to fighting organized crime. The series offers a “compelling and surprising look at the unexpectedly dark and depraved 1980s Germany – a time when liberalism ends, punk becomes en vogue, and the conservative era of Thatcher, Reagan and Kohl begins,” according to a press statement.
In the style of a U.S. cop series, the production takes place in the notorious St. Pauli Reeperbahn red-light district of Hamburg as the AIDS pandemic overturns the lives of pimps and prostitutes,...

The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history.Speaking after her tragic death at the age of 33, President Franklin D. Roosevelt testified to the legacy of Carole Lombard. “She is and always will be a star,” he stated in 1942, “one that we shall never forget, nor cease to be grateful to.” Although the president’s words were at least in part influenced by Lombard’s recent patriotic zeal (she died in a plane crash after traveling to sell war bonds), his comments resonated throughout the country, especially Hollywood, where the actress’s impact had been progressively pronounced for years. Her films were like a breath of fresh air to Depression-era audiences, adding silver screen levity to individuals seeking a brief reprieve from day-to-day hardship. By contrast, Lombard’s cinematic sphere was often one of glamour, romance, and, above all,...

Leading German producers Janine Jackowski of Komplizen Film and Katharina Hiersemenzel, the senior vice president of public policy of Constantin Film, challenged Wolf Osthaus, Netflix director of public policy for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, of a perceived imbalance between the streaming services and independent producers at an industry panel at Filmfest Hamburg.

An overwhelming amount of subscribers might not have been able to look past Enola Holmes when it debuted on Wednesday, with the literary adaptation dominating both the online chatter and Top 10 most-watched list ever since, but the apparent franchise starter wasn’t the only title to arrive on Netflix this week worthy of spending a couple of hours on.
Of course, the streaming service isn’t in the position to have a library built entirely on in-house content, and likely won’t be for a long while yet, but as the platform with seemingly the biggest bank account that’s spending $20 billion on original projects alone and millions more on the distribution rights to pre-existing material each year, Netflix have long since established themselves as the ones to beat.

If you’re the type to keep a close eye on new Netflix additions, you’ve probably already built up quite the list in September, as it’s been an exceptionally voluminous month for the streaming giant’s library.
Multiple hot Netflix Originals have been complimented by an array of classic films and shows, filling many subscribers’ lists with more than they can reasonably watch in a month. But of course, there’s always more, and today is bringing a handful of new shows and a movie to add to the collection.
Here’s the full list of everything that just landed:
A Perfect Crime (Season 1) – Documentary series on the 1991 killing of the politician Detlev Rohwedder. Country-ish (Season 1) – Reality TV series about country artist Coffey Anderson and his wife juggling their career goals and personal lives. Nasty C – Documentary. Once again, Netflix have found one of their original movies dominating the cultural conversation, as The Devil All the Time continues to reside in the upper echelons of the Top 10 most-watched list. Much of the praise is being pointed in the direction of Tom Holland’s transformative performance, and while the psychological thriller won’t be the awards season contender that many thought it might be, the Spider-Man star’s phenomenal work could yet see him enter the conversation.
Of course, with the streaming wars in full swing and competition getting fiercer every day as rival platforms constantly expand their libraries, Netflix can’t afford to stand still for even a second and bask in their latest success. Which is why next week sees plenty of new additions, including another in-house feature that’s being earmarked as a potential franchise starter.
