It’s crazy to look back on those early Fast & Furious films and see how far things have come. The series originally started off as an underground streetracing one with an extra dose of crime strewn about, and four films later ventured into the more spy espionage genre before going full-blown superhero movie on us.
Given how much things have escalated in the 15 or so years since the first film, it’s easy to joke about the franchise eventually heading into space. After all, what’s the most silly and ridiculous ways to escalate things even more? While we joke about it, we also have a tendency to pass it off without Seriously looking into it.
When asked about this potential direction, Fate of the Furious director F. Gary Gray didn’t really rule it out as a possibility.
“Outer space? Listen, I wouldn’t rule anything with this franchise.

Time flies, doesn’t it? It seems like just yesterday I was watching Animaniacs Live, interviewing folks about Turtles and cartoons, seeing the latest in geek fashions, hanging out with American Gods, and chatting with the Kings of Con at Sdcc, not to mention chillin’ at Nerd HQ. And now suddenly it’s September, and I’ve since attended both the UK Discworld Convention and Dragon Con! Convention season: it really never stops, does it?
Despite my busy schedule, I don’t want to miss sharing any of the fantastic adventures I’ve been having with you; so first, let’s rewind to San Diego and reminisce about the summer party-party-parties, because they are a staple of Sdcc and deserve to be featured. Every year, I try to line up at least a couple of parties each night, because, let’s be frank, I just love a good party. (I...

At least once a month, Cinelinx will chose one director for an in-depth examination of the “signatures” that they leave behind in their work. With the release of Big Eyes this week, let’s examine the trademark style and calling signs of Tim Burton as director.
Burton went to college to study animation. His work there caught the eye of Disney and he was hired on as an animator. He worked on several projects before it became apparent that his style did not fit with what Disney wanted to do. He worked on several short film projects before catching the eye of Paul Reubens who offered Burton the opportunity to direct his first full length motion picture, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure (1985). That film was a success and led to Burton’s working relationship with Oingo Boingo frontman Danny Elfman. Burton’s next opportunity was 1988’s Beetlejuice, which was also...

Check out the latest Destiny trailer that showcases some new enemies of Mars.
The trailer shows off a little bit of the new enemies players will be facing when Destiny releases next month.
From Acitivision / Bungie : "What little we know of Mars may as well be a myth. We built a massive metropolis in the red dust. No one knows what remains of our lost age, now buried beneath the dunes. "
To me it makes it sound a bit more like the Moon map we got a little tease of in the beta. Several people had discovered the map had a whole new city under their feet. Sounds interesting!

Bad news: Walt Disney World ride “It’s a Small World” is reportedly getting its own movie. Good news: Uh…
“Small World” has a nice enough premise — ride a brightly colored boat through the world’s countries, learning about their cultures through cutesy animatronic puppets and song. But as for movie potential? We’re not so sure about that.
Disney has pioneered the movies-based-on-rides trend, and so far, Disney rides are the only theme park rides to ever be turned into films. And while its Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has done surprisingly well, other ventures into ride-based movies...

If this post does anything I hope it will get those of you that never saw 2011's Pariah to give it a shot because it's great. Directed by Dee Rees and featuring a powerful performance from Adepero Oduye (who plays Eliza in 12 Years a Slave) and a surprising performance from Kim Wayans it narrowly missed my Top Ten of 2011. Oh, and if you need any more reason, it's only 87 minutes long so it won't take too much of your time. amz asin="0547572573" size="small"I mention all of this because Rees hasn't delivered anything new since, despite being attached to an HBO project with Viola Davis and a couple other projects that have yet to find their way to our eyeballs. However, she appears to have found yet another potential property to consider as Deadline reports she will get to work adapting Philip K. Dick's "Martian Time-Slip" a story...

Think about it, freedom from the daily grind, no bills to worry about, no boss to have a go at you and to top it off, you will enter the history books as a pioneer. Your name will sit next to Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong as someone who pushed humanity to the next level. Sounds enticing, but as with everything, there is a flip side to all the positives.

Did you know that, before being gobbled up by ZeniMax, Arkane Studios (of "Dishonored" fame) were working on a standalone Half-Life 2 episode called “Return to Ravenholm”? Me neither.
This is apparently old hat within the "Half-Life" community, but fan site ValveTime dug up some concept art and a few screenshots of the canceled, giving fans their first real look at the project.
The action in these screens mostly takes place indoors, which is strange: I remember a large, outdoor level, with gasoline traps in the town square and a final standoff on the rooftops of Ravenholm. In any case, ValveTime points out that the heads-up display includes an “Absorption” stat, without any real indication of what it might do or how it might change the core Half-Life 2 gameplay.

Spiders Studios released new screenshots for "Mars War Logs" over the weekend, which is as good an excuse as any to take a look at the game. The developers are calling it a “short story” cyberpunk sci-fi action-rpg that takes place -- if you haven’t guessed -- on Mars.
It’s the distant future at a group of space-capitalists have a stranglehold on the water on Mars, making life difficult for the colonists living there. Roy Temperance is “a renegade with multiple talents,” who's taken it upon himself to enter the fray, presumably in opposition to Aurora, a water company that’s strong-armed his hometown with its army of Technomants.
These newest screens show a few snippets from Roy’s journey through the Shadowlair with a girl named Innocence, a young fugitive who helped Roy escape a Martian work-camp.

Star Trek is pretty much unique when it comes to fan-made movies and episodes that pay homage to the sci-fi series. Left alone by CBS and Paramount (as long as they don’t try to make money from them) fans build elaborate sets and even bring in recognisable Star Trek actors to produce work that is anything but amateur.
The latest hoping to go into production is Star Trek: Renegades, co-written by Jack Trevino and staring Walter Koenig, Tim Russ, Garrett Wang and Robert Picardo among others, names that will be familiar to any Star Trek fan.
Jack Trevino is no stranger to the world of Star Trek. Having written the hugely popular fan-made miniseries Star Trek: Of Gods And Men which stared a number of Star Trek actors including Walter Koenig and Nichelle Nichols. The series was awarded ‘Best Web Production 2008’ by SyFy Portal which is now Alpha Airlock.

Most news coverage of San Diego Comic-Con is saturated with celebrity sightings and Hollywood movies. Magazines report on ridiculous cosplay, digital spectacle, and the publicity tidal wave of Hall H. But on the floor, the experience is different. There are stories on every corner that have nothing to do with film promotion; there are passions that bypass traditional t-shirt bargains and get straight to the meat of what comics are about; there are people who wait all year before finally getting the chance to have a serious discussion about Swamp Thing. This blog is about them. Posted in reverse chronological order (most recent post is at the top of the page).

At the very least, you will know exactly what to expect.

John Carter
Directed by: Andrew Stanton
Cast: Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Mark Strong
Running Time: 2 hrs 12 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: March 9, 2012
Plot: Civil War veteran John Carter (Kitsch) is suddenly transported to Mars, where he finds himself in the middle of another battle. He encounters a princess who tries to convince John he could change the tide of the war.
Who’S It For?: Fans of science fiction writer Edgar Rice Burroughs ought to get in line immediately, and buy tickets for the second showing. Not because they’ll necessarily fall in love with this high budget carnation, but because they’re probably the biggest hope Disney has of helping this $250 million wannabe blockbuster make its mark. If you like science fiction movies, or action movies, this still isn’t an immediate recommendation for you. This movie would definitely give Ogre from Revenge of the Nerds a brain aneurysm.

I don't know if you heard the six hundred ways I shouted about it last week, but Lizzy Caplan is on New Girl! She's not here to stay, but her presence in last night's episode upped the awesome factor and allowed New Girl to do something it has never done before: Put four female characters in a room together at the same time. And one of them was even a lesbian.
Afterellen Bait
"Jess and Julia" finally paid out on the promise of introducing a lesbian character into the mix with the always pitch-perfect June Raphael. Her sexuality is a non-issue, just tossed into the conversation. When Nick says Lizzy Caplan doesn't want to label their relationship, Sadie goes, "Come on, dude. That's a classic move. Even in the lesbian community." Which is, of course, like a siren call to Schmidt, who comes whizzing into the kitchen half-naked. Sadie is like,...

The web has certainly been abuzz with John Carter news all week, but that’s not the only war with the Martians we can expect in the coming years.
Paramount has hired David Leslie Johnson (Orphan, Wrath Of The Titans) to write the screenplay adaptation of Last Man Standing, the graphic novel by Daniel LuVisi. The news was reported by Variety, who describes the story as follows:
Recently published by Kevin Eastman’s Heavy Metal label, the story, set 600 years in the future, follows an invincible soldier created to help Earth win a war against Mars. After becoming a celebrity hero, he’s framed for a heinous crime by a terrorist organization. After a nine-year prison sentence, he escapes and sets out to even the score.
Sounds cool. No word yet on whether or not the film will function as a tie-in to the hit Tim Allen television show of the same name.

The release of the Bioware’s juggernaut Mmo is nearly upon us and, as is the way with these games, a large beta invites thousands of players to help the developers iron out the kinks before the game hits the shelves.
I should stress – especially with the Battlefield 3 beta debacle the other month – that this is indeed a beta and not a demo of the game and many things I find over this weekend are subject to change before the official release. Fortunately, unlike EA’s treatment of Battlefield 3, Bioware are making no bones about the fact that this is a beta and as such are publicising this as anything else. Phew.
So, onward and upward. 10:00 Cst – my allotted login time – strikes and the ‘Play’ button lights up on my login client. I’m in. Kind of.

Indie rockers Ash were formed in Downpatrick, Co. Down, Northern Ireland in 1992 and were originally a three piece comprising Tim Wheeler ( lead vocals and guitar), Mark Hamilton (bass) and Rick McMurray (drums). After selling over a million copies of their debut album ’1977′, and whilst touring with Weezer, the band felt that they were limited and needed another guitarist to create a fuller sound so asked Charlotte Hatherley to join.
Ash released their second album ‘Nu-Clear Sounds’ and although it achieved Gold status it failed to emulate their earlier success. The band toured non-stop and in 2001 after becoming almost bankrupt, released their third album ‘Free All Angels’, a title apparently taken from a t-shirt design worn by a hells angel and written in Wheeler’s parents garage. The album featured the singles Shining Light, Burn Baby Burn, Candy, Sometimes and There’s a Star and entered the UK charts at number...

As the Cannes Film Festival is but one week away from kicking off in the South of France, posters and other such studio marketing ads will no doubt begin to be plastered across the Crosiette this week, if it hasn’t begun already.
One such ad that is due to be erected is the following sales poster for Cobra: The Space Pirate, director Alexandre Aja’s (Piranha 3D, Haute Tension) attempt to adapt the Japanese manga turned popular animated t.v. series into a live-action feature film. I always love seeing this stuff, because it's really just early sales art to create some buzz. ComingSoon has posted a photo of a cover containing some promo art for Cobra: The Space Pirate, the new film from director Alexandre Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes, Mirrors, Piranha 3D). It's an adaptation of a Japanese manga about a rogue space pirate who teams up with a bounty hunter on an adventure to Mars in search of lost treasure. The pirate, who isn't even cast yet (as far as we know), has "surgically altered his face and erased his memory to hide from enemies," but regains those memories to find the treasure. Sounds fun. Update: We've added the nice, clean, high res version of the poster below, as it was debuted on Premiere.fr. Cobra, as it was known in Japan, is a space-opera manga series written & illustrated by Buichi Terasawa,...

It almost seems set for a movie adaption, but Sony Animation has just optioned the rights to Chuck Sambuchino‘s book How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack: Defend Yourself When the Lawn Warriors Strike (And They Will) -- which pretty much details how one would go about defending yourself from a half-pinte porcelain apocalypse. Sounds almost made to be right? Well thats what Oscar-winning producer Robert Zemeckis seems to think! Because he's just singed on to back the planned R-Rated animation.
Variety reports that Zemicks' production company, ImageMovers will make a deal with Gotham Group on a the live-action/CGI hyrid adaption of the humor novel -- which currently has no director. My guess is that Zemicks will be brought on for directorial duties as well, seeing as he did a decent job most recently with the A Chirstmas Carol back in 2009 -- he practiacly quintessential for the job.

Books: They’re just like movies, only without CGI.
So it’s no wonder that over the past century, Hollywood has consistently turned to books to provide the basis for some of its best works. “To Kill a Mockingbird,” for instance, was based on a book, while “Gigli” wasn’t. See how that works?
With that in mind, then, we decided to put together a sneak peak of all the coolest books currently being turned into major motion pictures (like “The Help,” left). Because these days, the best library you can go to is your local Cineplex.

The Switch
Directed by: Josh Gordon & Will Speck
Cast: Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, Jeff Goldblum, Juliette Lewis
Running Time: 1 hr 41 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: August 20, 2010
Plot: Kassie (Aniston) is an unmarried woman who decides to get pregnant through in vitro fertilization. Seven years later her friend Wally (Bateman) realizes that he replaced her sperm sample with his own.
Who’S It For? Do you like your indie comedy with a little mainstream thrown in? Or maybe your mainstream with a good indie vibe? Most importantly, you like Jason Bateman, right? Then see this flick.
Expectations: The plot just makes you say “ugh,” right? There’s no other way around it. So, I have to say my only hope was Bateman being included.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Jason Bateman as Wally Mars: When Bateman smiles, I smile. Yes, he’s that infectious. I was worried this movie would end up feeling more like an infection.

It wasn't the most shocking elimination in American Idol history. But Paige Miles' ouster from the show last night stung the 24-year-old nonetheless. Working on limited time and voice, a laryngitis-stricken Miles called EW.com today to talk about her elimination and the secret health troubles that have plagued her throughout the competition. Entertainment Weekly: Hi, Paige. How are you doing? Paige Miles: Pretty good. How are you? Good. Sorry to hear you're so sick. You don't sound too good. Oh, it's just laryngitis, and after all these interviews it's getting worse. I've been struggling with it for a couple of weeks now.

Underrated actor Bryan Cranston has joined the cast of Disney’s John Carter of Mars. The live-action/CGI hybrid is under the direction of Andrew Stanton (Wall-e, Finding Nemo) as he embarks on his first non-animated movie.
THR’s Heat Vision Blog reports Cranston will play “a Civil War colonel who comes into conflict with Carter.” In the 11-novel series by Edgar Rice Burroughs, a Civil War veteran (Taylor Kitsch) seemingly dies and is transported to another physical body on the planet Mars where he discovers a lush, diverse landscape. This unfortunately means Cranston’s part will be a small one as the rest takes place on the red planet.
The rest of the cast includes Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, Thomas Haden Church, and Polly Walker who all basically play 12-foot green aliens. Sounds like Avatar only with names like Tars Tarkas.

Look at it this way. We have the chance to see virtually every American film that's released, and many of the English language films in general. But with the crisis in U.S. distribution, the only foreign-language films are those someone paid hard cash for, and risked opening here. "You always like those foreign films," I'm told, often by someone making it sound like a failing. Not always, but often. They tend to involve characters of intelligence and complexity. If
they're about people of subnormal intelligence, they're about that, or acknowledge it. In most of the world, people want to hurry into adulthood, not clinging to adolescence.
Have you noticed how many American mainstream films are about stupid people who are presented as normal? One opened recently: "Did You Hear About the Morgans?" No one in that film has an interesting thought as they stumble from one plot point to the next.

'Tis the season to be a Star Trek fan. Jj Abrams’ blockbuster Star Trek reboot just hit DVD. And on Dec. 15, CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment will release season three of Star Trek: The Original Series on Blu-ray. One of the extras includes a piece of pretty sweet Trek arcana that hard-core Trekkers/Trekkies (pick whichever one offends you the least) are going to eat up. As almost everyone knows, each episode of Star Trek began with William Shatner’s James T. Kirk intoning the memorable preamble: Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise.

Planet 51
Directed by: Jorge Blanco, Javier Abad, Marcos Martinez
Cast: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Justin Long, Jessica Biel, Seann William Scott
Running Time: 1 hr 30 min
Rating: PG
Release Date: November 20, 2009
Plot: An American astronaut lands on an inhabited planet where the aliens resemble 1950’s Americans. Once he lands, he needs the help of Lem (Long) to hide from the alien army that wants to dissect his brain.
Who’S It For? Kids. Though there are a lot of jokes aimed at adults that will go right over most children’s heads.
Expectations: Not high, the premise seemed kind of like it hinges on one joke, based on the trailer.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Dwayne Johnson as Captain Charles T. Baker: The Rock continues his assault on children’s movies with this role as the handsome, charismatic, and slightly dim astronaut, Charles Baker. Johnson’s voice is a great fit for this vain,...

There's no denying it, science fiction is coming back in a big way. Not only is there more science fiction finding its way into independent and foreign cinema than ever before (read as: Moon, Sleep Dealer, Cargo, China's first ever, Chengdu), but Hollywood seems to have more than a few franchisable blockbusters on the horizon. With all this action happening on the scifi front we couldn't help but bring you this special report on all the upcoming science fiction projects that have us pumped right now.
#1: Eagle Eye director to helm "Dead Space"
Whether or not D.J. Caruso has the chops to handle a big screen adaptation of Electronic Arts' hit video game, Dead Space, is up for debate, but the fact that it's even on the table right now makes us excited. Gears of War and Dead Space movies? My tiny brain can't handle it! [via: Bd]
#2: More violent scifi coming form Neil Blomkamp?...

"X-Men Origins: Wolverine" stars Taylor Kitsch (Gambit) and Lynn Collins (Kayla Silverfox) are set to star in "John Carter of Mars" from Walt Disney Pictures.
But the movie buff in me is very happy that "Finding Nemo" and "Wall-e" director, Andrew Stanton will helm the film in his first live-action directorial debut!
Kitsch will play John Carter, a Civil War veteran who gets mysteriously transported to Mars. Collins will play Dejah Thoris, the Princess of Mars. Sounds far-fetched but anybody who can make us fall in love with an animated robot movie that is pretty much a silent film in its first half can do no wrong. For now, at least...
Stanton will be working from a script he co-wrote with Mark Andrews and the film is scheduled to begin production early next year.

Last night Thq rented out a portion of Mars 2112, a mars-themed restaurant just north of Times Square to show of “Red Faction Guerrilla” for the last time before it releases next week. Though it’s not exactly the sorta place I hang out (if you’re from New York, Times Square is usually the last place you ever want to be), I guess I’ll concede that the “Red Faction”-being-on-Mars cross-promo was just too good to pass up.
Anyway, Thq and the developers at Volition had two stations set up in the bar, showing off the PS3 and 360 versions. It might’ve been the TV hook-up, but side-by-side the PS3 version looked a bit muddier than the 360. Both versions played identically, and contained all the same features, but we’ll have to wait until the final copies come in before we see if there’s any major visual difference on our set-up.
