The satirical spy-thriller “The Sympathizer” hopes to make a mark at the Primetime Emmys this year, as HBO/Max has submitted the show for 27 Emmy categories. The hopeful bids from creators Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar include acting recognition for breakout performer Hoa Xuande and superstar Robert Downey Jr., as well as outstanding limited or anthology series.
Based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s 2015 debut novel, “The Sympathizer” tells the story of “The Captain” (Xuande), a North Vietnamese soldier in the South Vietnamese army who is forced to flee to the United States with his general near the end of the Vietnam War. While living within a community of South Vietnamese refugees, he continues to spy on the community, struggling between his original loyalties and his new life.

Shoots, da kine “Rescue Hi-Surf” is one lucky TV show, brah. Fox just gave it the cherry timeslot after Super Bowl Lix on Feb. 9, 2025. That’s a big vote of confidence for the freshman drama, which is set to premiere this fall on Monday nights at 9 p.m. Et, after “9-1-1: Lone Star.”
Although the impact of the Super Bowl lead-out has varied over the years, it proved to be a huge boon this year to CBS, which launched “Tracker” after Super Bowl Lviii on Feb. 11 and watched that drama turn into a big hit. The last time Fox aired the Super Bowl, in 2023, it ran an episode of its hit food competition series “Next Level Chef.” And in 2020, Fox aired an episode of another unscripted program, “The Masked Singer.”

Game of Thrones was the reigning TV show during the 2010s as people continued to turn up to experience the mythos of Westeros for every season. While the final season divided fans, the show as a whole is still considered one of the best epics to have graced the TV screen. Many actors from the show had their breakthrough from the series.
Liam Cunningham as Davos Seaworth in Game of Thrones
Liam Cunningham was one of the highlight performers from the series as Davos Seaworth. Series creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss had a great working relationship with the Irish actor. After the series’ end, Cunningham was committed to doing another series, but the showrunners told him to ditch that show so that he could come aboard for their next epic series 3 Body Problem.

Having become a brand in their own right thanks to their work on Game of Thrones, Benioff and Weiss quickly (and anticlimactically) wrapped up the iconic TV show and jumped aboard the Netflix ship to create 3 Body Problem, their new big thing. While proving to be divisive, the new sci-fi series received mostly positive reviews — and recently found an unlikely fan and supporter in the King of Horror himself.
Stephen King Loved 3 Body Problem
One of the best things about following the King of Horror on social media is that he’s constantly consuming fiction — and is happy to share his feedback with fans.
The celebrated author focused not only on his own genre, horror, but also everything that catches his attention… Like 3 Body Problem which he just recently watched.
He loved it.

The recent success of 3 Body Problem and the prominent domination of Prime Video’s Fallout banger show proved people’s great interest in science fiction series. Thus, every streaming platform is trying to present its own takes on the genre, including Apple TV.
These days they’re releasing the show you definitely shouldn’t miss, as it has already taken the first place in the platform’s global chart. Moreover, its premise can remind you of our favorite sci-fi titles, like the Dark Netflix original series (2017 - 2020).
Its plot revolves around Jason, a physics professor, living his happy middle-class life with his wife and teenage son. However, after being beaten and abducted, he awakens in an alternate version of his life, where he hasn't got literally everything he had.

Recently Netflix released the first season of 3 Body Problem, based on the book of the same name by Chinese science fiction writer Liu Cixin. This novel and its two sequels in the 2000s made Cixin the most popular author in his country.
With such fame, a movie adaptation was only a matter of time. The creators of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, took over the development of the adaptation.
3 Body Problem Was a Good Sci-Fi Show, But Not a Masterpiece
Before its release, there were many concerns about whether the series would be at least somewhat interesting: the book seemed too complicated, and Benioff and Weiss tarnished their reputations with the ending of Game of Thrones. 3 Body Problem turned out to be not perfect, but very exciting – a little rushed, but addictive from the first minutes.

“The Roast of Tom Brady” debuted with a bang on the Netflix Top 10.
Despite not premiering until the evening of May 5, when it aired live on Netflix, it was the streamer’s sixth-most-watched English-language TV title of the April 29-May 5 viewing window. In its first few hours of availability, the roast hit 2 million views. And it wasn’t the only live event from Netflix Is a Joke fest to make the chart this week. Katt Williams’ stand-up special “Woke Foke” actually outperformed it as the No. 4 title with 4 million views — though it had the benefit of longer availability, having aired on May 4.
The Jerry Seinfeld-directed movie “Unfrosted” debuted on top of the English-language film chart, but with 7.1 million views in its first weekend, this marks the lowest viewership for a No. 1 film since Netflix began ranking by views in June of 2023.

“Storytelling, and the words that they put in their actors’ mouths. They’re just glorious,” declares Liam Cunningham when giving high praise to the creators of Netflix’s hit sci-fi drama “3 Body Problem.” The series was created by multiple Emmy-winning “Game of Thrones” duo David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, who serve as co-creators and producers with writer/producer Alexander Woo (“True Blood”). For our recent webchat, Cunningham (who worked with Benioff and Weiss as Ser Davos Seaworth on “Game of Thrones”) adds, “it’s just wonderful! They aim so high with difficult storytelling that most normal people wouldn’t attempt to go near.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

The doctors were in at the top of Nielsen’s streaming ratings for the beginning of April.
Medical dramas The Resident and Grey’s Anatomy were the top two titles for the week of April 1-7, finishing with 1.18 billion and 1.15 billion minutes of viewing time (both stream on Hulu and Netflix). The Resident actually slipped a little from the previous week‘s 1.48 billion minutes, which was good for second overall, but the show that had been ahead of it — Netflix’s 3 Body Problem — fell further. The sci-fi series dropped by about 47 percent to a still solid 937 million minutes of viewing.
Disney’s animated movie Wish had its streaming premiere on April 3 and racked up 1.02 billion minutes of watch time over its first five days on Disney+. The Resident is claiming sweet victory on the Nielsen streaming list.
After making its debut during the previous interval thanks to some measurement adjustments on Nielsen’s end, the medical drama racked up 1.18B minutes viewed across Netflix and Hulu from April 1 to 7.
It was joined in second place by another medical procedural, Grey’s Anatomy. According to Nielsen, that show put up 1.15B minutes viewed during the interval.
However, the company reports that Grey’s secured a younger crowd, with 35% of its audience coming from the 18-34 demo, while The Resident nabbed 30% of its viewers from the 50-64 crowd.
Disney+ locked in third and fourth place with Bluey and Wish, respectively. The kids show, which is consistently in the Top 10, put up another billion-minute week with nearly 1.1B minutes viewed. The children’s animated film “Wish” debuted with just over 1 billion minutes watched in its first five days of streaming on Disney+, per Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings for the April 1-7 interval. Having debuted on April 3, that makes the movie the fourth-most-streamed title of the week.
The No. 1 title of the week was “The Resident,” up from No. 2 the week before when an update to Nielsen’s measurement capabilities drove the series’ chart debut. Across both Hulu and Netflix, the medical drama was watched for nearly 1.2 billion minutes from April 1 to April 7.
“Grey’s Anatomy” was the second-most-streamed title of the week with just over 1.1 billion minutes watched across both Netflix and Hulu. y Reindeer” continues its surprise meteoric ascent. The limited series, which reached 2.6 million views in its debut weekend — impressive, given the show’s minimal marketing push — rose to 13.3 million views in its second week on the chart, then shot up by another 65%, landing at 22 million views for the April 22-28 viewing window.
That made it the most-watched Netflix title of the week, followed by “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver,” which was the top movie with 18.8 million views. “Anyone but You” was the No. 2 movie of the week with 10.6 million views in its first six days of availability, following a successful run at the box office earlier this year.
Back on the English-language TV chart, “Dead Boy Detectives” debuted in second place with 3.1 million minutes watched in its first four days of availability. The series is set in the same universe as Netflix’s “The Sandman,” both being based on...

Baby Reindeer has taken over Netflix.
Richard Gadd’s breakout stalker series was already No. 1 on the streamer’s English-language TV list and, not only did it retain that title for the second week in a row, its viewership shot up to 22M views from April 22 to April 28.
The series, which is loosely based on Gadd’s own experience with a stalker, was easily the most-watched title of the week. It was also leagues above the No. 2 series for this week, which was Dead Boy Detectives.
That series, adapted from Neil Gaiman’s comics, drew 3.1M views after debuting over the weekend.
Elsewhere on the TV list, The Gentlemen and 3 Body Problem are still going strong with 2.3M and 2.2M views, respectively. Both are still quite a ways away from Netflix’s most popular list.

At 76 years old, Stephen King is a very active social media user, and it's not uncommon for him to share his thoughts on a particular movie or TV series with his readers.
But what is rare is a project that would truly shock him. And that's exactly what happened the other day, as King shared a raving opinion. What's more, our readers will be surprised to learn that the project that stunned King is not a supernatural horror series at all, as it is Netflix's new drama thriller Baby Reindeer.
Baby Reindeer's Colossal Ratings
When Baby Reindeer debuted on Netflix on April 11, 2024, it immediately made its way onto the list of the streaming service's most-watched shows worldwide. For the week of April 8-14, the series made its way into the Global Top 10, coming in at number five with 2.6 million unique views. Remarkably, it even outperformed the popular Ripley starring Andrew Scott.

European powerhouse Mediawan has acquired Leonine, a leading production and distribution group active in German-speaking markets.
With the acquisition of Leonine, Mediawan will boast a portfolio of 85 labels, a catalogue spanning 30,000 hours of premium content and revenues exceeding €1.3 billion ($1.4 billion). Mediawan’s worth is now believed to be in the $2-billion range. The deal is an all-stock transaction; both companies have the same shareholder, the U.S. private equity fund Kkr whose stake in Mediawan will still be below 50%, according to a source close to the company.
Mediawan now has a significant footprint in all major European markets, including German-speaking territories which represent the continent’s second largest TV market. The pact positions Mediawan as one of the world’s biggest super indies with a large proportion of scripted business across prestige series and movies. Mediawan now spans 13 countries including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Scandinavia, Benelux and the U.K.

When you hear that D.B. Weiss and David Benioff are behind a series, you sit up and take notice. The recent Netflix drama 3 Body Problem had all the suspense and drama we've come to expect from the pair, as a team of scientists and a detective investigate the strange deaths of scientists around the world.
Based on the novel The Three Body Problem by Liu Cixin, the show scored 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and topped Netflix's global top 10 for 3 weeks. But with only 8 episodes, this uber-bingeable show has already come to an end for many fans.
The good news, a new K-drama landing on April 26th is the perfect show to stream if you loved 3 Body Problem and can't believe it hasn't been renewed for Season 2.
What would you do if there were only 200 days left until the apocalypse?
That is the question the citizens of Korea face in this heart-pounding show.

There will likely be some new faces on the Nielsen streaming lists going forward, thanks to a change in the company’s measurements — including The Resident, which crept up to No. 2 during the week of March 25 to 31.
The series racked up nearly 1.5B minutes viewed across Hulu and Netflix, though that wasn’t enough to beat out Netflix’s 3 Body Problem, which took the top spot with almost 1.8B minutes viewed.
Family Guy is also new to the list, debuting at No. 6 with 837M minutes viewed. Nielsen says that “business agreements which preceded the rankings” kept these series off the lists until now.
“The Scr (Streaming Content Ratings) product enhancement has addressed these areas, significantly increasing the breadth of programs reported. All affected programs fall into the acquired category, having been primarily available on Hulu and/or Peacock after airing on a given linear network,” the company wrote.

Netflix’s 3 Body Problem delivered its second straight No. 1 showing among streaming titles, leading the rankings for the last week of March. The acquired series top 10 had several new entrants, thanks in part to a change in how Nielsen reports the numbers.
The ratings service says it made an “enhancement” to its Streaming Content Ratings, which is the basis for the weekly top 10 lists, that results in a number of programs being added to the Scr product. (They weren’t previously “due to business agreements which preceded the rankings, coupled with the associated technical aspects of measurement.”) The affected programs stream mostly on Hulu and Peacock after airing on linear networks.
The upshot is that former Fox series The Resident (1.48 billion minutes on Hulu and Netflix) and animated mainstays Family Guy (837 million minutes on Hulu) and American Dad (619 million on Hulu) all made their first appearance in the top...

ously unavailable. Per Nielsen, a combination of previous business agreements and technical aspects of measurement prevented several acquired series from inclusion in its weekly rankings, and while most of those titles would not have made the Top 10 anyways, some are debuting for the first time thanks to more accurate analysis.
Among those titles is “The Resident,” which appeared on the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 for the first time during this viewing window in the No. 2 position with 1.5 billion minutes watched. The medical procedural ran on Fox for six seasons from 2018 to 2023 before being canceled, and has seen increased popularity since being added to Netflix in early March, though it was already available on Hulu.
“Family Guy” also jumped onto the overall Top 10 because of the measurement update, taking sixth place with 837 million minutes watched. And on the chart of the Top 10 acquired titles, the update drove “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” to No.

When John Bradley met with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss about their new series “3 Body Problem,” the first thing they told the “Game of Thrones” actor is that they’d written a role in the sci-fi mind-bender for him. Quite literally. “They said, ‘It’s as close to yourself as any character you’ll ever play,’” Bradley says. “It’s kind of a daunting prospect. It’s a bit like you’re going to see yourself drawn by one of those caricature artists on the street. I’m going to find out what these highly perceptive, very bright people think I am as a person.”
The character Benioff, Weiss and co-creator and co-showrunner Alexander Woo created for Bradley — Jack Rooney, part of the “Oxford Five” of college friends and scientists at the center of the series — may not, on its face, seem all that flattering. Jack is brash and blunt,...

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the strangest of them all? In "Star Trek," that title goes to one of the zaniest concepts ever introduced into the canon: The Mirror Universe. Before you make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Drama Supporting Actor, take a tour of our photo gallery showcasing the men most likely to land in the lineup. Last year’s race was completely dominated by actors from “Succession” and “The White Lotus,” neither of which can produce nominees this time since the former ended last May and the latter won’t return until 2025.
Naturally, this category’s sole presently eligible former winner – Billy Crudup – has emerged as the frontrunner. Guy Ritchie has directed everything from low-budget hits like the crime caper "Snatch" to the $1 billion monster hit that was 2019's live-action "Aladdin" remake. But the director has also been behind some pretty big misfires, most notably 2017's "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword." Ritchie has been on a tear lately though, releasing three movies in theaters over the last 13 months. Unfortunately for the filmmaker and all involved, every single one of those movies has disappointed -- if not outright flopped -- at the box office.

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver might have debuted at #1 on the English Films List for Netflix’s Top 10 with 21.4 million views, but it wasn’t enough to top the original or stand against other films on the popular streaming service. When Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire debuted in December, the Star Wars-like action film gained 23.9 million views during its opening window. While the gap between both films isn’t staggering, one has to wonder why more people failed to tune in for the continuation of Snyder’s story.

Regardless of the sequel’s opening salvo, 5.5 million viewers returned to Rebel Moon—Part One: A Child of Fire to familiarize themselves with the original before watching the sequel. Netflix Top 10: ‘Baby Reindeer’ Leads TV Chart, ‘Rebel Moon — Part Two’ Debuts as Most-Watched Title
watched English-language TV series, and the 11th-most watched series overall, it was the No. 1 TV series on the service from April 15-21, reaching 13.3 million views — impressive, especially for a title that premiered with a smaller scale marketing campaign than titles with similar viewership.
The most-watched title of the week overall was “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver,” the follow-up to Zack Snyder’s 2023 film “Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire.” The movie hit 21.4 million views in its first three days of availability, putting it slightly behind “Part One,” which reached 23.9 million views in the same amount of time. The release of “Part Two” also gave a boost to “Part One,” which returned as the No. 5 English-language film with 5.5 million views. Also notable on the film chart was “Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp” and “What Jennifer Did,” which hit 18.8 million and 16.3 million views in their first full weeks of availability.

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver has rocketed to the top of Netflix’s charts but has landed fewer viewers than its opening saga.
The film, which was released on April 19, opened with 21.4M views, making it the most-watched title of the week.
However, it came in lower than its prequel, which managed 23.9M when it was released in December.
Its launch did help the first part re-enter the film charts at number five, bringing in 5.5M views over the week. This means that Snyder has had three chart-topping films following the launch of Army of the Dead.
Elsewhere, the live-action/animated crossover Woody the Woodpecker Goes to Camp was number two with 18.8M views, followed by the true-crime documentary What Jennifer Did that brought in 16.3M views at number three.

An adaptation of Liu Cixin’s sci-fi trilogy, 3 Body Problem, is an ambitious project. However, Game of Thrones writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were up to the challenge. The source material is dense enough to make for compelling television and the first season would prove to be a new hit for Netflix as the show cracked the Top 10 on the platform. The series has received generally positive reviews, but our own Alex Maidy didn’t exactly love it. “I found it very hard to engage with this story, these characters, and this series,” Maidy wrote. You can check out the rest of Maidy’s review Here.

From a certain point of view, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare star Eiza González may have just played the original real-life Bond girl.
Ungentlemanly Warfare, the first of González’s three Guy Ritchie movies to hit theaters, is loosely based on the recently declassified Operation Postmaster, chronicling Winston Churchill’s Special Operations Executive (Soe) and their covert mission to neutralize Nazi Germany’s U-boats during World War II. The efforts of these unauthorized commandos and spies helped change the course of the war, allowing the United States to then join the European Theater of Operations in 1942.
In the action-thriller, González plays Marjorie Stewart, a talented soldier-spy who’s equally gifted as a performer. Together with Babs Olusanmokun’s Heron, Stewart set up shop at the Nazi-frequented island of Fernando Po, where they communicated the Nazis’ latest comings and goings to their fellow Soe personnel, including a group of commandos that...

TV is positively cluttered with buzzy book adaptations; 2024 alone has given us “Ripley,” “3 Body Problem,” “Under the Bridge,” “Girls on the Bus,” “Apples Never Fall,” “Palm Royale,” and way too many others to really count. Few of these projects arrive to the screen with as much clout — and as high of expectations — as “The Sympathizer,” HBO’s newest limited series. Not only was Viet Thanh Nguyen’s 2015 novel about the queasy half-existence of a North Vietnamese spy burrowed in the South Vietnamese army extremely popular when it hit book stores in 2015, it was also highly acclaimed, receiving the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. That’s a lot for any show to live up to.
That said, the show certainly has the pedigree behind the cameras to match the original work. The HBO “Sympathizer” limited series comes from Korean auteur Park Chan-wook, who co-created the series with Don McKellar and directs...

From the tiniest micro-organism to the far reaches of the universe, sci-fi adaptations have made a triumphant splash across multiple streaming platforms. For decades, the collective groans that routinely followed book-to-tv adaptation announcements were a given.
At the same time, many science fiction books are so steeped in lore, character motivations, politics, and scientific complexities that converting prose to a "show but don't tell" format is a tall task.
Star Trek, for instance, has historically been pretty cut and dry with its science. A phaser will vaporize you, and a transporter will, well, transport you.
Now, imagine explaining the three-body problem from a show but don't tell approach.
Thankfully, the rash of exciting new sci-fi adventures solves these riddles with filmmakers and writers who are passionate about the material.

You might remember English actor Julian Glover for his role as Walter Donovan, the villain of "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." A Nazi collaborator who wants the Holy Grail to achieve immortality, he meets a grisly end when he chooses ... poorly.
In his native England, Glover was a renowned member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. In Hollywood, though? He's a 6'2 British man, so, of course, he plays the heels, even in his later roles like Pycelle on "Game of Thrones." (Who knows if he'll show up in "3 Body Problem" with his former co-stars.)
"Last Crusade" was not Glover's first rodeo with Lucasfilm; he had a much smaller role in "The Empire Strikes Back" as Imperial General Veers. The general only shows up in the film's first act, but he leads the At-at assault on the Hoth Rebel base (with some insert shots of him riding in the...

The docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV posted Max’s best streaming numbers to date for its premiere week.
The show, which streamed on Max concurrent with its on-air premiere on ID, had 1.25 billion minutes of viewing for the week of March 18-24. That’s the largest weekly total for any series on Max in the nearly four years of Nielsen’s streaming rankings, edging out the 1.19 billion for The Last of Us in early 2023.
Netflix’s 3 Body Problem grabbed the overall No. 1 spot for the week (it premiered March 21), racking up 1.37 billion minutes over its first four days. The sci-fi series narrowly beat Prime Video’s remake of Road House, which had 1.32 billion minutes of viewing in the United States. Amazon had earlier claimed that the movie was Prime Video’s biggest film premiere worldwide so far.
