Solid Giallo/Slasher Throwback
acidburn-1024 December 2022
'Bloody Matinee' or 'The Last Matinee' depending on which region you're from is a fun Spanish horror flick with Giallo and Slasher elements combined with a stylish 90's throwback setting. The movie's plot is simple yet effective and well paced with enough tension and gory kills to keep you entertained throughout.

The plot = The movie takes place on a rainy Sunday evening at the Opera Theatre where are old horror movie is being screened and a handful of people show up unaware that there's a murderer amongst and he starts to pick them off one by one.

The movie's direction by Maximiliano Conti is excellent with solid set pieces and a creative use of colours and lighting which makes everything look polished and fantastic, the cinema itself has that classic grand look to it and builds a decent amount of mood and atmosphere. The only negatives I could give is that the acting isn't up to much here and the characters themselves are rather forgettable, but there's enough going on to keep you distracted and thrilled.

Overall the movie is a fun ride with a clear love for the classic Giallo and slasher flicks. Sure it may not be the most original horror flick out there, but its still a good effort.

The last picture show.
DoorsofDylan3 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Looking round on the Arrow site on the final day of their recent sale,I was thrilled to stumble on a Neo-Giallo title that I've not heard of before, leading to me grabbing a ticket for the matinee showing.

View on the film:

Locking eyes with the audience via book-ending the title with striking eye shots, co-writer (with Manuel Facal ) / director Maximiliano Contenti makes his (solo) feature film directing debut by closely working with cinematographer Benjamin Silva to reel in an eerie, ultra-stylized Giallo atmosphere of swooping panning shots through the flickering light of the cinema screen, towards razor-sharp whip-pans following the cinema-goers fleeing down the rows of seats,as they try to avoid getting caught in the killer last reel.

Bringing the curtain down to Hernan Gonzalez's terrific ominous electronic Prog Rock score, Contenti splices the film with sparkling Giallo set-pieces, zooming in on the dripping across the screen gory killings, with Contenti cleverly using the confine, low-lit cinema setting for wide-shots that fully display the excellent practical effects murders.

Booking everyone in for the final screening, the screenplay by Contenti & Facal plays a compact Giallo Slasher hybrid, where the teens in the audience begin to fear a black glove killer is hiding in the shadows of the screening, killing them one by one, leading to the surviving audience members searching in desperation for an exit from a blade in the dark, coming out of the last picture show.

Retrooo Finally
shone-9251621 August 2021
An interesting film. The production is ok for me, and considering the small budget, this is a real little masterpiece. All the elements of retro horror are there. It was interesting to watch him. The music is great. The rain that is constantly falling complements the phenomenal atmosphere that is missing in many films of this genre today ...

Slasher meeting
kosmasp24 June 2021
Yes if you like slasher movies (Giallos too sure), you will have more fun with this, than other people have. And while there is no nudity to speak of, some may think that it still has enough "sexuality" (or too much?) in it. Especially the one thing that is the cinema equivalent of the Mile High dream/fantasy ... not saying all have that, but generally speaking.

But this is a horror movie, so the focus is on the kills ... and they are quite creative - especially the first one. Not just smoke and mirrors - pun very much intended. And then the killer is also sticking it to people ... anyway, there really isn't much story or plot. The movie that is playing in the theatre might have more to tell than the actual movie ... I don't know. If you watch it, watch it for the kills and thrills as they say - of course the afficionados do not need this reminder, but for everyone else: it is just a movie! No one wants that happening in real life.

The Cinema Paradiso of horror
OJT17 October 2020
It's a soaking wet day with rain pouring down and one of the best hings to do is to go seek refuge in a great old cinema. There's only a problem: A scary murderer is on the loose and he also has taken refuge there.

That's the plot of the Uruguayan horror movie Red Screening (Al morir la Matrinee) which is a throwback to old 80'ies horror movies, where colour and style is more important than the believeability of the plot. It's a beautiful, dark and very moody film, which is a treat to see.

Thoughts go to both Scream, Cinema Paradiso, Stage Fright and even the rains of Blade Runner, and I'm quite sure the film makers have seen them all. A real treat, and well played.

Pretty, But Nothing More
jamiemiller-0761119 January 2022
The Last Matinee is a stylish and well shot homage to the giallo films of Dario Argento and maybe a few nods to the Spanish thriller Anguish. On the technical side of things, there are few complaints. Lighting is beautiful and the gore effects are really well done, but the script goes off the path a few too many times during its first hour and the pacing can get a little sluggish. The final act is at least a bit more entertaining as the surviving moviegoers band together to stop this killer who collects eyeballs.

Tribute to the giallo and the slasher
danybur21 December 2020
The action takes place in 1993 (decade of the movie Scream). Rainy night at the Montevideo Opera Cinema. A few spectators enter the large movie theater to see a Frankenstein movie at the evening performance, while the film is screened by the young daughter of the projector. But in the room there is a psychopath who will assassinate them ...

When the matinee dies is a film-tribute to the Italian giallo and his successor, the slasher. Personally, I confess that neither of the two (especially the second) convinced me as a "horror" cinema. The slasher repeats the formula of a serial killer with a sharp object and gruesome murders (with a lot of gore), with generally young victims and in some sexual or drug process, a "final girl", a heroine who faces the monster and a dose of self-awareness shared by your viewers. But his main problem for me is the poor psychological development of all his characters (including the murderer). While every genre film follows certain rules, in this one in particular, everything becomes (to me) very predictable.

The film by the Uruguayan Maximiliano Contenti has some successes and certain limitations that in this genre one does not know whether to attribute them to the genre or to the inexperience (for example, the performances).

At all times there is a certain parallelism between the film being projected and what is happening in the room. After a somewhat routine and static first part, when the action is concentrated on a group of characters, the empathy works better and the interest in the plot is consolidated, interest reinforced by the increasing truculence of the scenes and a murderer who charges more entity. Some shots are very successful (with tributes to the red giallo) and the murders deserve special mention, with a very analog and real gore.

In short, a film that lovers of the genre will surely enjoy and with an effective dose of gore.

It competed at the Mar del Plata Festival and was broadcast on cinearplay.

An Argentinian Pastiche.
meddlecore4 October 2022
This Argentinian slasher flick is a bit of a pastiche, with homages to Argento, and the 90s classic Popcorn, among others.

It all takes place in a cinema in Montevideo during the last matinee screening of the day.

A young college student mans the reigns of the projector for her ailing father, during a screening attended by one sleeping old man, and a handful of kids...all of whom end up being stalked by a knife wielding maniac.

Using all real special effects, there are a bunch of simple, yet gory, kills.

Nothing overly creative, though.

The hooded killer could be aptly termed "the gouger"...but we are never told why he has gone postal...other than to assume he's just a mentally ill sociopath hellbent on murder, and, perhaps, a little hungry.

The whole thing is kind of fun, but leaves something to be desired.

Particularly the ending...which is incredibly anti-climactic, and rather rushed.

Overall, it's all rather mediocre...but the filmmakers do seem to set themselves up for a sequel, anyways.

Personally, i'd be ok with it dying here as a one off..but it is what it is.

4.5 out of 10.

Very close to greatness
PedroPires9029 September 2021
A beautiful homage to giallo films, to horror, to cinema in general. Loved the cinematography and the score - reminding you Demons and others from that time in some moments. The direction is also refreshing with a big variety of different angles and shots.

I really loved the first act and most of the deaths. Unfortunately, I was not convinced by some acting and stupid reactions (maybe an homage to giallo? Maybe a bit too far?) and that's the only reason this is not at the very top of the best horrors of the year.

This movie was super boring - and its not like its anything new either. There was two decent cool kills. Rest was very cliche and boring. Save your time.

Loved it
arrmeen11 May 2022
Wow I just watched this movie with subs on Shudder. What a movie, loved every bit of it. The Nostalgia of an old school movie theater, with a premise of a slasher. Some really good thrill, gore and visually a good thriller to watch, if you're a fan of the slasher genre or even if you like movies in general. Watch it all and don't be stupid, because I am really surprised with the low rating of 5.8 here. I think people prefer to watch woke casting, political correctness these days, sorry you won't find allthat BS in this movie. Thankfully , please keep making horror moviilike these, we don't need preaching in them.

Gory and Well Shot
kayrannells15 August 2022
The Last Matinee gets the giallo gore and style right on the mark, but also carries over its lack of interesting characters and story drive. It takes a bit too long to get to the slashing and everything plays out about as one would expect. There are very few surprises, but it's entertaining enough for a one time watch.

Meh. Pretty good gore movie I guess.
Nadanada1563 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The gore was okay I guess, I guess you'd have to be really into that to rate this movie too high. I was enjoying it but I just REALLY lost interest when the victims didn't just bash the murderer's head in when they literally had him unconscious on the ground. Then didn't climb out a broken window instead of breaking out the rest of the glass because "You're cutting yourself!" Then got the best of the killer AGAIN with a knife but then just left him alive and ran away. Then literally leaving the other lady *alone in the same room* WITH the killer, to go find the little boy who ran out. Maybe that's the point as an homage to old Italian slashers but writers should avoid situations where you've got to turn your characters into complete morons to get to the gore you're invisioning.

The Last Matinee

This a a film set in the early '90s and the ambience, clothing and set design really took me back to those care free days of my youth. All together, this was a good slasher with above average special fx.

Argentinian Aubrey Plaza and Jonah Hill
cassie_coaley28 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Ten things I learned about The Last Matinee:

1) Eyeballs are perfect for pickleling.

2) The main actress resembled Aubrey Plaza.

3) Jonah Hill was also there.

4) You better talk to the creepy security guard or he'll get cranky.

5) Dont take a bar harlot to the movies.

6) You can find true love on a bus and in a movie theatre.

7) Angela would have made a better Final Girl.

8) You can save money on a babysitter by sending your kid to the movies by themselves.

9) The Frankenstein movie was definitely suspense.

10) Matinees can also be considered late night showings.

This film was silly in most parts , but decent attempt at the 80s/90s slasher genre.

Trying Too Hard To Be Cool
brian2sevenmedia18 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Have never really understood setting a slasher film in a movie theatre. Granted, of these past couple of years, the audiences are sparse, but in 1993 (when this horror movie takes place), it would've been more full-ish. But maybe it's different in Uruguay.

Ana (Luciana Grasso) is a student that comes to the projection booth to summon her father to dinner. She'll take care of this showing, while studying for an exam. There are a handful of people there to watch & she knows how to switch reels & fix problems.

The showing is of "Frankenstein: Day Of The Beast," which is a bit tongue in cheek, as the director of that film plays the killer in this one, (Ricardo Islas).

Our victims to be are a young couple on a date, an underage kid, a pensioner, 3 drunk teens (2 guys, 1 girl) & eventually another young woman.

The usher Mauricio (Pedro Duarte) isn't very good at his job, as almost all these characters are talking during the show. This is necessary for some character building, but makes me see red & am not displeased when they're offed. But while we get glimpses of character for the victims, why the killer rampages is a mystery.

He successfully dispatched Mauricio, takes the keys & locks everyone in, so there's no escaping. Our Final Girl, Ana, is dutifully up to the task once she notices what's going on.

The first couple is killed in their seats by having a rod pushed thru their heads while making out. Seems pretty impossible that someone wouldn't see that, especially the friends of one of them who are only a couple of rows behind them. Others die in more believable, removed locations, like the bathroom.

This is a non pretentious Chilean slasher, that maybe fans from 80's, like me, will love. I appreciate the effort to do something in honor to Giallo's movies.

I really enjoyed the setting, music and vibes. On the other hand acting is pdece.

A giallo homage taking place in the '90s
gedikreverdi14 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It'd have been a very good slasher/giallo if the actors had been better. The actors were really mediocre at best especially the child actor. The only good actor in this film was the killer himself. He looked genuinely scary and did really a good job at looking creepy. Also I'd like some payoff or explanation as to why he's killing and collecting human eyes. The killer locked the rolling door at the entrance of the theatre and he started to shed blood and gouge eyes to collect in his bottle. The final girl who's the projectionist's daughter saved the little boy and the end. There were some really creepy moments such as cigarette smoke came out of the wound when the killer slit the man's throat, he impaled on a rod the kissing lovers, he also bludgeoned one of the teenagers on the projector and white screen went red and finally the eyes fell down on the stairs like candies when the bottle dropped and broke.

A great Giallo throwback.
charliecoffell9 December 2021
Chompcrc here. This movie is a great throwback to the French Giallo films. The old school vibes are strong. It has great camera work, and even better color grading. I loved the slow motion sequences, especially the eyeballs tumbling down the stairs. Overall, it has a lot more to like than most modern horror. Check it out.

5.2/10. Watchable but not recommended
athanasiosze1 June 2023
There is some entertainment value here, hence the 5 stars. First part was interesting, i thought it was gonna be a good enough horror movie to recommend. Characters' backgrounds were ok, and i was waiting for things to go south. However, second part is not good. As the movie progressed, it was becoming more and more ridiculous. Villain seemed more dumb than menacing. Acting got worse and nothing made sense. Horror movies are not realistic but this was even more unplausible. I like slasher films, not the biggest fan though. So, maybe slasher/horror fans will enjoy it more than me. In my opinion, first half was kinda enjoyable but then it felt apart.

Very solid Giallo
HorrorFan69693 January 2022
I enjoy everything about this movie. The gore that is very good. The acting is pretty solid. It's a low budget but look this good in finale. And I love the « Dario argento's Opera » hommage. The poster is even in the theater. It's bloody. Gory. Over the top. It's a good 90 minutes without thinking much. Enjoy it a lot.

Gialli 2K20
BandSAboutMovies5 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Montevideo, Uruguay-based filmmaker Maximiliano "Max" Contenti has been at it since his first short released in 2001. He's since made eight shorts, two features - Meneco viviente V and Neptunia - and one documentary.

An '80s slasher meets '70s giallo throwback that is set in the Wes Craven-Scream '90s, The Last Matinee, aka Al morir la matinée (Red Screening) is a movie for fans of both genres - especially giallos - as we are treated to over-the-top, creative kills. As with those giallos of old that we love: it's not the plot we came for: all the colors of the dark are what we came for. And The Last Matinee has more color and style that several of the recent horror streamers we've watched put together.

The plot is simple and it's set up quickly and it just gets on with it: it's a dreary, soaking wet day with nothing to do - so you go to the comforting refuge of a grand ol' theater to watch a showing of Frankenstein. The thing is: serial killers don't like the rain either and get bored as well. Hey, why should our "Norman Bates" have to collect eyeballs in the pouring down rain when there's a nice, warm theater filled with plenty of orbs to pluck so as to fill his bottle?

This is the type of sick, clever film that, when one of the victims is smoking and the killer slits their throat: cigarette smoke comes out of their throat.

Yeah, while it may be derivative to some - oh, let's say Michael Soavi's Stage Fright and Lamberto Bava's Demons and Dario Argento's Opera and Bigas Luna's Anquish comes to mind - but I can't recall the last time cigarette smoke puffed out of a slit throat. As with Luna's cinema-with-cinema effort: the bloody events in the theater mirror the film on the screen.

Hey, we enjoyed it . . . More so than a not-so-clever Rob Zombie Xerox joint.

Less of a Giallo, Actually an 80s Slasher
thalassafischer1 June 2023
This is not what I was looking for at all, I was hopeful because of the creative usage of the movie theater atmosphere but this director was obviously more influenced by the experience of being a child in the late 1980s or early 90s and watching slasher flicks than anything else. Depressingly, the film they're watching in the theater for our "meta" experience as an audience is complete crap. Apparently, the folks creating Al morir la matinee could not purchase the rights to something a little more recognizable even if it was low grade sleaze. One Dario Argento poster for Opera hangs prominently in lobby, but we're dragged through some American D-movie I've never even heard of.

5 stars for style, totally watchable, just probably never again unless I'm stuck in a hotel with basic cable somewhere.

This was decent!
tman-2128923 December 2021
This is a good slasher movie!! I'm not a big fan of reading movies and the fact that the movie they were watching was in English made it a bit comical but the gore was definitely there and they didn't stray from the usual formula at all. So no, it's not ground breaking by any stretch..... But it does not suck! I just hope they do a dubbed version someday.

Nice reminiscence of OPERA by Dario Argento. The splatter effects are really bloody and handmade, with attention to detail. You can clearly see that the director himself is a fan of such films.
