- In a society where dark skinned girls are not considered as beautiful, a young South African girl struggles to see beauty in her reflection until she holds her own "Brown Skinned Girl AA Meetings", and reintroduces herself to herself.
- Growing up, a young girl named Mona-Lisa always felt ashamed of her skin tone. She often got teased by her community members about being 'too dark' making her obsess about being lighter in tone, wishing and hoping her dark skin was a phase that she'd one day outgrow, but when she realized that wasn't going to happen naturally she decided to take matters into her own hands and developed a face scrubbing routine hoping that the shamefully dark skin would 'peel off' or wash away with soap. The goal of the routine was to wash away her 'disgustingly dirty dark skin' and reveal the beautiful fair skin tone hidden underneath. Every time she vigorously scrubbed her face, she would close her eyes, desperately hoping and wishing that when she opened them her skin would be as fair as snow.
Years went by and the 'not so little', grade one girl grew older and like any regular child, she was faced with chores and activities that took up most of her time, making it rather difficult for her to execute her intense self-made scrubbing routine. Mona-Lisa secretly continued living with her insecurities, keeping them tightly close to her heart and not uttering a word to any of her family members. The insecurities escalated and started becoming a part of her, so much that being light-skinned was as important as breathing. Year end was approaching and it was almost time for matric ball preparations, the dress, shoes and everything. Mona-Lisa was not as excited as this meant going through the process of looking for colours that would complement her skin tone. One day while Mona-Lisa and her aunt were shopping for a fabric that her aunt was going to use to design her Matric Ball gown, she finds herself unknowingly exposing her insecurities to her aunt. Her aunt who sees nothing but beauty in Mona-Lisa lets her know that she is beautiful with her brown skin. That results to Mona-Lisa re-evaluating herself and have an introspective. Luckily for through the process of holding her own "Dark girl AA meeting" she finally finds beauty in her own reflection.
Through this documentary she then opens up her "Dark Girl AA meetings" to other beautiful Brown Skinned Girls namely: Monde and Constance, who have shared similar difficulties in their past. Together they try and find a way to inspire other Brown Skinned Girls who may find themselves facing the challenges their discussed and known. The Girls also get a chance to send a message to their younger self.
