Vincent Garenq continued the tradition of the great André Cayatte ,too often unfairly maligned by the critic -Tavernier restored him to favor on his site, shortly before his death-Like him ,he has registered the same ambition : to put the French justice in a much less flattering light ; actually ,"le mensonge" will remind the viewer of Garenq's "présulé coupable" , which dealt with a similar subject.
That said ,this third installment is the least convincing one,at least till the 27th minute, when Auteuil is again in the spotlight in his cell, desperate , but still loving his persecutor .The episode is framed by the so called victim's suicide attempt ,now a young man :about a decade has passed ; the script,as far as this would be victim ,is erratic, confused ,and his motives do not make much sense .
Besides ,the script gets bogged down in irrelevant details: the unfortunate accused's prostate and the lawyer's smoking problems; it's all the more infuriating that the abused child's father ,who vicariously played a prominent part in the tragedy ,should be given so little time on the screen.
