Now that you've seen it, what did you think? From Broadway to Hollywood, the latest musical to hit the big screen is Rock of Ages, directed by the one-and-only Adam Shankman (Hairspray, Prop 8: The Musical). He rounds up quite an ensemble lead by Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Julianne Hough, Malin Akerman, Russell Brand and Catherine Zeta-Jones. So how is this rockin' 80's glam metal, hair band musical extravaganza? Is it better than the original Broadway version, or just another Hollywood musical? Does Cruise rock it? Once you've seen it, leave a comment with your thoughts on Shankman's Rock of Ages. Note: I have not personally been able to see Rock of Ages yet, but do plan on seeing it eventually. Instead, to open up the discussion, here's some starting thoughts on the movie from our own Ben Pearson's review from Filmonic: "As a film, Rock of Ages is...

As we've mentioned before, James Van Der Beek is playing kind of a jerk version of himself in Don't Trust the Bitch in Apt. 23. That version of James is going on Dancing With the Stars and the real James got a wakeup call as to how tough it was. "I went in thinking I've always wanted to learn how to dance. I'm a pretty good athlete; I could figure this out. After about three or four dance classes, I thought I was looking good, so we recorded it on an iPhone. I watched it and I was absolutely mortified. I look like a jock trying to fumble his way through it. It was horrible. I realized I really had to step it up so many more hours of training followed until I got to the point where it was good enough for the jokes to work. It did not come easily.

Now that Fox’s Glee has broken the curse and proven that the musical genre can succeed on broadcast television, the race is on at other networks to find a Glee of their own. There are a few pilots getting that chance this development season: a pair of comedies and one drama — NBC’s promising Smash, which counts Steven Spielberg among its executive team.
Casting already is under way and Will & Grace’s Debra Messing has landed a prime role in the pilot, playing lyricist Julia in the project that follows the staging of a Broadway production — about the life of Marilyn Monroe — on all levels: writing, composing, casting, the business of Broadway as well as the personal lives of those involved.
According to Deadline, American Idol Season 5 runner-up Katharine McPhee has landed one of the most promising roles of the season — as Karen, a 23-year-old blonde who does everything...

Chicago – Nicholas Sparks is the Michael Bay of touchy-feely weepies. No matter how derivative or cynically calculating his stories prove to be, they never fail to rake in the dough. Several of his books have been turned into blockbusters, the best of which benefit greatly from the strength of their cast, as in “A Walk to Remember” and “The Notebook.”
Unfortunately, “The Last Song,” stars The Artist Currently Known as Hannah Montana, Miley Cyrus, who seems uncomfortable acting without a laugh track. Her initial attempt at graduating from the Mickey Mouse Club into big girl roles was admittedly doomed from the start, since this Sparks adaptation is the first co-written by the author himself, who succeeds in making his work appear even more cloying onscreen. This is the cuddliest cancer drama since “My Sister’s Keeper.”

Swearing kids and boobie jokes may be the secret to the success of their videos, admitted Funny or Die's CEO Dick Glover and creative director Andrew Steele at SXSW this past weekend, but the smart business model behind them may hold a few secrets to the future of entertainment.
Originally launched as a "hot or not" video site for comedy in 2007, Funny or Die has grown into a multi-media, cross-platform comedy hub with a thriving Web portal and production company--the HBO series, Funny or Die Presents, debuted in February. The next stop is film, starting this summer when the comedy duo Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim of the cult Adult Swim show Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! start production on their first feature.
In fact, there is no platform or joke that Funny or Die won't try, said Steele. There's just one rule: It has to be funny.

Choreographer-turned-filmmaker Adam Shankman has fortunately found another musical to direct following his success with the "Hairspray" remake. Variety reports that he's set to helm the movie version of Broadway's "Rock of Ages," which incorporates popular '80s rock anthems, such as Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" and Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna take It," into a Sunset Strip-set love story about an aspiring musician and a girl who's just off the bus.
Shankman, who also made the hilarious online short "Prop 8: The Musical" and will be doing a "Hairspray" sequel, feels he knows the material well enough from having worked on an Extreme video back in the early '90s and from growing up with a dad in the music biz. He also was a choreographer on "Boogie Nights," which means he probably has experience setting a scene to Night Ranger's "Sister Christian," one of the songs appropriated...

No stranger to satire, Marc Shaiman has written music for "When Harry Met Sally…," "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut" and "Team America: World Police." FunnyOrDie.com's "Prop 8: The Musical" starring Jack Black and Neil Patrick Harris as well as the Sundance Channel's "Green Porno" starring Isabella Rossellini are among the notable recipients of Webby Awards, which were announced today. Oh, yeah, and Paris Hilton was among the losers. Her video reply to John McCain's campaign ad claimed neither a jury nor people's voice prize. What's notable about the current crop of Webby Awards winners is the overlap — and disagreement — between those sets of awards. For example, both sets of kudos agreed that 1000 Awesome Things was the best culture/personal blog. However, in terms of humor websites, the jurors preferred TheOnion.com while regular Web users voted for FailBlog. Check out the full list of recipients here. Winners will receive their honors at a ceremony held on June 8 in New York City, hosted by "Saturday Night Live" star Seth Myers.

For anyone who’s been living in a cave the past year or to anyone who’s just generally unaware and clueless, Proposition 8 is a Californian anti gay marriage ballot proposition that passed in the November 4, 2008, general election making same sex marriage illegal. To say both sides are passionate about the issue would be an understatement. Those who apposed Proposition 8 raised $43.3 million in campaign funds while its supporters raised $39.9 million. Too bad both sides couldn’t have just gotten along and collectively spent the $83 plus dollars on something a little more life changing than marriage. But I digress… The outcome of this election sparked the creation of Prop 8: The Web Series, conceived by Benny & Rafi Fine (they’re brothers, not spouses). Like Prop 8: The Musical and similarly themed online propaganda, the hopes for the series is that it will raise awareness and help to get Prop 8 overturned. From...

After she was cheated out of an Oscar nomination in 2006 for "House of Wax," can 2009 finally be Paris Hilton's big year for showbiz awards? She swept the Razzies in February (three victories!) and now she's among the nominees at the Webby Awards for her most popular Internet video ever — well, at least one in which she's wearing clothes. Her FunnyOrDie.com retort to John McCain's campaign ad is up for best comedy: individual short or episode at the Webby Awards, which will be bestowed on June 8 at a ceremony in New York hosted by Seth Myers ("Saturday Night Live"). Other notable nominees in that same category include "Prop 8: The Musical" (video below) featuring Jack Black and Neil Patrick Harris in a satiric blast at California's constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, and "Children's Hospital," starring Megan Mullaly and Michael Cera in one of a series of webisodes spoofing TV medical dramas.

Adam Shankman, as I've written many times before, can do whatever he wants in my eyes so long as he sticks to musicals. While i didn't bother with Bedtime Stories and will never watch A Walk to Remember again, I could watch Hairspray every day for the rest of my life, and still laugh at jokes from Prop 8: The Musical. So it's very, very good news to hear that Shankman will be taking on Sony's planned remake of Bye, Bye Birdie, the venerable musical that's been kicking around both the screen and high school productions for the last 50 years. According to THR the project has been through a lot of incarnations before it landed at Shankman's feet, and at one point the character of Birdie-- a rock star heading off to serve in the Army-- was planned as a hip-hop star. No telling what angle Shankman will be taking,...

Adam Shankman, director of the upcoming Adam Sandler comedy Bedtime Stories, has signed on to direct two new projects - Disney's Bob the Musical and The 8th Voyage of Sinbad, which will be his biggest film yet in terms of budget and scope. Bob is a musical comedy to be produced by Benderspink's Chris Bender and Jc Spink and Contrafilm's Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson. It was written by Mike Bender and follows a mild-mannered man who suddenly hears the "inner song" of people's hearts after being struck in the head. The project reunites Shankman with Marc Shaiman, his composer for Hairspray and the recent internet video, Prop 8: The Musical. Shaiman is writing the music and lyrics for Bob. Sinbad, Columbia's retelling of the classic myth, centers on sailor Sinbad and his crew, who are marooned off the coast of China and embark on a quest to find the Aladdin's lamp.
