This succeeded on Broadway?
rmurts22 December 2020
Have to agree with the first review on here. This play bore little resemblance to the book. While it's understandable that half of the cast were children that aren't as seasoned or tale as their adult counterparts, the adults' talents were lacking. When you consider this should have been the best performance for the cameras, it felt like an off-off Broadway production.

Waste of time

This musical felt like it was made for babies. It's not offensive or the worst thing ever, but as someone who loves musicals, i do not recommend this.

If you want a good musical that's based around media or something that already exists. I would recommend you the Spongebob musical, it has a pro shot and it's honestly better than it had any right to be.

The Grinch musical gets a 3/10 from me. A musical disaster.

Who was this made for?
lucy_brindley30 December 2021
This came on free-to-air telly and I still want a refund. Dreadful acting, had to switch it off. Just resort back to the 2000s Jim Carey film, at least it has camera angles.

The creators were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should. And really, they shouldn't have

I'll let my kids statement say it all

My kids were so excited to see this, then after 5 minutes asked to watch the cartoon version, or the Jim Carrey version, or any other Christmas movie that was not this.

Waste of time

Wasted 2 hours of my life watching this terrible interpretation of the grinch. The poor dog character slid around the stage on his hands and knees, the music was awful, the dancing was awful, what even was the story line? A disgrace to the original Grinch

Why?! It is the only question I have for NBC. Please just stop trying to be whatever this was.

Just awful!
patriciafisher-4634213 December 2020
I am a kid at heart. I love all things Dr.Seuss. I am also a fan of musical theater. With that being said, all I can say about this is why? No need to do this. Give me the original, please and thank you!

Well done
deni-1384116 December 2020
I thought for the limited cast and probably budget, the vocalists were great. I like the perspective that they took on the story. Nice change from the same old same old. I enjoyed it. Would have been probably better in person but all things considered. I thought it was well done.

I cringed so hard it caused physical pain
DarthConnery11 December 2020
There's no way that this was conceived, written, or scored more than two weeks before they filmed this. The songs are bad, just lyrically awful, and melodically terrible. I was cringing so hard I felt physical pain. Acting wasn't as bad as the rest though.

So fun!
michigirl-4197915 December 2020
I'm not sure what the people giving it such horrid ratings and reviews were expecting. Les Mis? You have to watch it with open mind, heart and eyes. Enjoy the kids and the costumes and the talent. There isn't a song that is going to make the charts but they aren't awful. It's bright and bouncy and it is faithful to the story and the spirit of Seuss.

For Kids or those who are kids at heart
anthonyvertuccio11 December 2020
I see scathing reviews as it rates a 4.4! Folks, this is a kids' show...its just that simple. Its not for adults ( 18 and over). Yes, maybe long but simple songs and great for the kiddies

Soooo disappointed
emily-3537513 December 2020
The music is so bad, nothing could save this! Like the musical equivalent of fingernails down a blackboard.

Costumes and sets were cute. Kids danced well. But the story was boring (and we loved the book & movie!) and my kids wouldn't even sit through it.....

I was relieved to turn it off

Just awful
bmckinney201011 December 2020
This musical follows no storyline ever introduced to anyone that has seen any version of How The Grinch Stole Christmas. The songs were terrible and confusing given that the Grinch was in many scenes with the whos when, in reality, he was on a mountain and they were in whoville. Also, musicals involve songs throughout the production with at least some acting in-between. This production involved 97% singing and 3% acting. It's a shame that this company wasted a huge opportunity to tell the story in a different way that the audience would truly remember. Instead, most will be left with a sour feeling.

How to destroy a holiday classic in 83 minutes or less.
jamesmccormack14 December 2020
Too long. So boring. Off key signing. Joyless. Awkward staging. Endless commercial breaks. All this and Morrison destroying a holiday classics with a misguided take on the lead character. Why all the pelvic thrusts?

How did the production go do wrong? Thank goodness this production is totally forgettable.

Take my advice and stick to the original animated presentation.

Stole my Christmas.
briallenweaver12 December 2020
I believe he suited this role very well, as he stole my Christmas and precious time I will never get back. Just when you though Matthew Morrison couldn't play a creepier character...

I need a drink.
evanweinmeister12 December 2020
I remember seeing this with Stefán Karl Stefánsson. It was...decent. Bit this version is absolutely horrible. The acting is too forced and ridiculous. The vocals are down right embarrassing. My 2 year old cousin wouldn't even watch it cause he hated the sound coming from the tv. Save yourself 83 min and 22 seconds. Watch either the original or the Jim Carey version. 0/10 would not recommend.

Not bad considering
Ssodpack11 December 2020
Honestly I've seen worse. I give the art director, costume and makeup 10 out of 10. Music was well performed as were the dances. The writing was weak. But the performance was excellent. No one was phoning it in, and relying on their reputation. It was energetic and exciting. Loved the use of the cartoons songs with the movie and new material. Excellent way to get kids use to what a live show is. At least it wasn't a hallmark show.

Poorly written new songs!
tjsnxtc26 December 2020
Not much to talk about. The songs were so bad and seemed to be made up on the fly, with the exception of the songs from the original cartoon. The singers were good, so it's unfortunate they had to sing poorly written lyrics. Disappointed fan of Matthew Morrison.

It's Not What You Expect (in a very good way)
laalaa-0215811 December 2020
If you enjoy musicals and want to see another side of the story of the Grinch, you should really watch this. It might move a little slow for kids, but the amount of talent and the new perspective (seeing it from Max's eyes), gives it its own identity. I had always wondered what was truly going through Max's head while the Grinch was planning his schemes and trying to ruin Christmas. I just say, ignore the number, watch the musical, and make up your own mind. I happened to enjoy it very much and so did my 16 year old brother who has autism. He always found the Grinch's grumpiness ridiculously funny

We love it!
heatheryeaw2 December 2022
I don't know why this has gotten such terrible ratings! We just found it this year (2022) and my kid has been watching it on repeat. I really enjoy it!

Sure, it's a bit cheesy. So are most holiday movies. The costuming is great, the sets are cool. I enjoy the songs they added- "Who likes Christmas? Who's like Christmas!" So catchy! And the number with the kids on the red bouncers is funny. The guy playing the young Max is excellent! Grinch in the store with the green cowboy hat! Hilarious! I'd love if this became a real show, I'd love to be in it!

Stop letting these Grinches turn you off and go watch it yourself!

Dr. Seuss' the Grinch Musical
Prismark1026 December 2020
In hindsight. I made the correct decision not to watch this with the little ones.

This was a tedious tiresome mess. I soon realised that I made a mistake putting this on.

Dr Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a short book which was turned into a charming half hour cartoon.

It was then turned into two full length bloated movies. This stage musical remade as a television special is a crashing bore.

Like other inferior musicals. It is full of drab songs and flat dance routines. Like they were a badly fitted suit bought off the peg.

An older Max the dog (Denis O'Hare) narrates the story of the Grinch (Matthew Morrison.) He hated Christmas and despised the Whos of Whoville. They loved Christmas.

Many years ago, the Grinch with the help of a younger Max decides to steal all the Christmas presents. Even though Cindy-Lou Who tries to be nice to the Grinch.

Morrison struggles with his interpretation of the Grinch. This is a stinker.

Just No
bettinahooper15 December 2020
I did not expect to like this but I didn't expect to be horrified. O'Hara and Morrison are riveting as 'Old Max' and the Grinch but their talent, sincerity and effort are not near enough to save this Ill conceived, bizarre production peppered with truly terrible numbers.

I'm bowled over: and not in a good way.
