- Lucia: Andrea!
- Dr. Andrew DeLuca: Mom?
- [Chuckles]
- Dr. Andrew DeLuca: Mom?
- Lucia: Andrea!
- [Waves at DeLuca from across the beach]
- Dr. Meredith Grey: I'll miss you. If I go back and you don't, I'll miss you.
- Dr. Andrew DeLuca: It'll be okay, Meredith. It will. It'll be okay.
- Lucia: Andrea!
- Dr. Andrew DeLuca: [Smiles] I have to go.
- Dr. Meredith Grey: Okay.
- Dr. Andrew DeLuca: Mama!
- [DeLuca runs across the beach to his mother and embraces her]
- Dr. Amelia Shepherd: So, this morning they put your mom on a ventilator.
- Zola: That's the machine that breathes for her.
- Dr. Amelia Shepherd: Yes.
- Zola: When will they take her off of it?
- Dr. Maggie Pierce: Different people come off of it at different times.
- Zola: My dad never did. Do you think my mom will?
- Dr. Maggie Pierce: We hope so.
- Dr. Amelia Shepherd: But we don't know. We just -- We don't know.
- Zola: We shouldn't tell Bailey and Ellis. Not unless we need to. They're just too young to understand.
- Dr. Amelia Shepherd: Okay. We'll wait.
- Dr. Andrew DeLuca: I don't regret it.
- Dr. Meredith Grey: How did you know I was wondering that?
- Dr. Andrew DeLuca: I don't know. I just did. I don't regret it. You know, we walk through our lives and we witness atrocities. See homeless people on the street asking for help and we just walk right past them. See people that can't pay for medicine for their children, see people beating their kids, and we just say "Well, it's none of our business". See atrocities on the news every day. Crimes and cruelties committed by our government, paid for, nonetheless, by our own tax dollars. And what do we do? We just change the channel, right? We just -- We tune it out. Then we go back to work and we pretend like what we just saw, or that article we just read was somehow normal or acceptable, and the people who take to the streets screaming out for change, they're written off as crazy, they're written off as extreme. Doesn't make any sense. Makes no sense. But what you did, Meredith, risking your medical license to save that little girl -- That made sense. And what I did -- following that woman, not letting up, not letting her get away, not letting her harm another single human being. Yeah, it was dangerous, but it made sense. It's the only thing that made sense. So I don't regret it.
- Dr. Meredith Grey: The tide is coming in!
- Dr. Andrew DeLuca: [Building sandcastle on the beach] I know.
- Dr. Meredith Grey: It's gonna wash it away.
- Dr. Andrew DeLuca: I know, I'm trying to beat it.
- Dr. Meredith Grey: You're trying to beat the tide?
- Dr. Andrew DeLuca: [Continuing to build sandcastle] Yeah. I had more to do. I had plans. Wanted to do another tower over here, and a-- a -- a bridge with a moat. Tide's coming in too fast. Come on. It's too fast. I had plans.
- [Groans as tide washes sandcastle away]
- Dr. Andrew DeLuca: Come on. You can't build a sandcastle without a moat. I don't know what happens from here, Meredith.
- Dr. Meredith Grey: Me either.
- Dr. Andrew DeLuca: But no matter what happens, I want you to know that I never felt seen the way you saw me. I never felt inspired the way you inspired me. You made me want to be not just my best self, but better. And yeah, I felt small around you sometimes. I felt insecure. I wanted something from you that I needed to give to myself. But here, now, on this beach with you, I... I get it. I don't just get it, I feel it. I get who I am. I know my own soul, my strength.
- Dr. Meredith Grey: Do you want to take a walk? We can watch the sunset from the dock.
- Dr. Andrew DeLuca: In a minute. I just want to feel this first. I just want to hold onto this a little longer.
- Dr. Meredith Grey: Hey!
- Dr. Andrew DeLuca: Hey yourself.
- [Throws rock into ocean]
- Dr. Meredith Grey: Impressive.
- Dr. Andrew DeLuca: Your turn. Let's see what you got.
- Dr. Meredith Grey: Okay.
- Dr. Andrew DeLuca: [DeLuca Chuckles] There you go. Just gotta put a little bit more muscle into it.
- Dr. Meredith Grey: Yeah.
- [Chuckles]
- Dr. Meredith Grey: You know, this is the first time in my life I can ever remember not feeling competitive.
- Dr. Andrew DeLuca: Is this your life?
- Dr. Meredith Grey: What?
- Dr. Andrew DeLuca: Well, you said the first time in your life, but I don't know. I'm not so sure. Are we alive?
- Dr. Meredith Grey: I think so. You look good. The beach suits you.
- Dr. Andrew DeLuca: You too.
- [Both smile]
- Dr. Amelia Shepherd: [Leaving voicemail] Maggie, I don't know if you are asleep or if you are ignoring me or the world entirely, but call.
- Dr. Atticus Lincoln: Still nothing?
- Dr. Amelia Shepherd: Uh, she could be passed out on the floor from COVID, and no one would know. Or -- Or she could be hit by a car on the I-94 on the way to Wyoming.
- Dr. Atticus Lincoln: [Confused] What's in Wyoming?
- Dr. Amelia Shepherd: I don't know. But one sister's on a vent and the other one is missing, and the last time a sibling was missing, he was dying on the side of the road, so...
- Zola: [Interrupting] Is my mommy gonna die?
- Dr. Amelia Shepherd: Uh...
- [Looks at Link for help]
- Zola: It's okay. You can tell me.
- Dr. Amelia Shepherd: Come on, Zo. Let's go inside.
- [Looks at Link and sighs before going inside]
- Dr. Amelia Shepherd: [sighs] I made Zola a grilled cheese. She's watching a movie with the other two.
- Dr. Atticus Lincoln: Did you actually say anything?
- Dr. Amelia Shepherd: Ellis interrupted us before we got too far. Which feels like divine intervention because I have no idea what I would say. I mean, I can't lie because... Lying. And Zola's so smart she'd just see right through it.
- Dr. Atticus Lincoln: So you're just gonna keep making grilled cheeses?
- Dr. Amelia Shepherd: Are you just gonna walk for two hours every time Scout needs to sleep?
- Dr. Atticus Lincoln: You want to see what happens when I stop?
- Dr. Amelia Shepherd: I'm sorry. I need Maggie. Maggie is thoughtful and levelheaded, and I know I have to tell Zola the truth, but I need help knowing how to tell her the truth. She's not picking up. I have to go get her.
- Dr. Atticus Lincoln: W-What? No, you haven't slept. You can't stand still. You're not driving.
- Dr. Amelia Shepherd: You haven't slept either.
- Dr. Atticus Lincoln: Okay, deep breaths.
- [Inhales deeply]
- Dr. Atticus Lincoln: We'll figure this out. Um, I-I'll just call somebody that can find Maggie.
- Dr. Amelia Shepherd: Who?
- Dr. Atticus Lincoln: I don't know.
- Dr. Jackson Avery: You want to sit, or...
- Dr. Atticus Lincoln: Oh, the second I stop, Scout starts wailing like a human ambulance.
- Dr. Jackson Avery: As you were.
- Dr. Atticus Lincoln: And Scout needs me to keep moving. Zola, Bailey, Ellis -- They need us to keep on moving, playing songs and eating. They eat so much. So I just keep going to the grocery store and buying food that Amelia keeps pretending she knows how to cook, and what if Meredith doesn't survive this, you know what it's gonna do to my life?
- Dr. Jackson Avery: Yeah, you just said that out loud. Don't worry about it, we're all scared. No one's judging you.
- Dr. Winston Ndugu: I'm a little bit judging, but that's 'cause I've only known you seven minutes.
- Dr. Atticus Lincoln: I'm on my knees every night praying that she survives this, and I'm not an on-my-knees-praying kind of guy.
- Dr. Jackson Avery: I get it.
- Dr. Atticus Lincoln: I'm not praying for myself.
- Dr. Jackson Avery: You're human, Link. Give yourself a break, alright? You're exhausted. Meredith is -- she's family to me. I mean, Meredith is family. I can think of a million reasons I don't want her to... die. Some of them are about her, some are about me, some are about the world at large. Point is, you're allowed to have your reasons. They don't all have to be selfless.
- Dr. Atticus Lincoln: I just... I mean those kids already lost their dad. I don't want them to have to grow up without a mom, too. And all we can do is just...
- Dr. Winston Ndugu: Keep moving.
- Dr. Atticus Lincoln: Yeah.
- Dr. Winston Ndugu: I mean, literally keep moving, 'cause human ambulance.
- Dr. Atticus Lincoln: [Chuckles] Yeah. You know, you're pretty good at this. The whole "keep somebody calm you've only known seven minutes" thing.
- Dr. Winston Ndugu: Well, to be fair, it's been more like eight minutes now.
- Dr. Jackson Avery: It's true.
- Dr. Atticus Lincoln: And, Jackson, thank you for getting Maggie over here. I-I-I'm sorry if that was awkward. You were the only one picking up.
- Dr. Jackson Avery: No, it's fine.
- Dr. Winston Ndugu: Why would it be awkward?
- Dr. Jackson Avery: Uh, just...
- [Drinks beer]
- Dr. Winston Ndugu: Yeah. Okay, you're, uh -- you're her ex, aren't you?
- Dr. Jackson Avery: [Finishes beer] Mm. Another round?
- Dr. Amelia Shepherd: I was Zola and Bailey and Ellis. I was the kid who lost a parent and the world turned upside down. And I don't know... if I hadn't been there to see my dad dead on the ground, how long they would've waited to tell me. Nobody talked about it. I didn't expect answers, but... there wasn't room for questions. Just... Silence.
- Dr. Maggie Pierce: Meredith told the kids about Derek. We can do this for her. She deserves us stepping up. And the kids do, too.
- Dr. Amelia Shepherd: Can we just stay here a little longer?
