The year's "TV Times Awards" were scheduled on ITV at 8pm, 25 minutes after the scheduled end of Wogan, with Michael Aspel winning the award for "TV Personality of the Year".
In his 2000 autobiography "Is it me?", Terry wrote about the situation: "Realizing (sic) that the day would come when the shades would fall from the British public's eyes, I asked to be excluded from the TV Times Awards after I had won my tenth in succession. They left me out of the running, someone else won for the first time in ten years, and the headlines read: 'Wogan Loses At Last!' What can you do?"
