Now that Halloween has come, gone and left us with enough nightmare fuel for another year, Hollywood is firing up the festive marketing machine in anticipation of this year’s slew of Christmas-themed releases. And so, with both Love the Coopers and Jonathan Levine’s (50/50) The Night Before muscling for the limelight, another contender has emerged in the form of Mitch Davis’ Christmas Eve.
Retaining Tinsel Town’s obsession with intertwined festive stories, the debutant trailer for Davis’ feature boasts a fragmented narrative in the vein of Love Actually or, dare we say it, New Year’s Eve. There is reason to be hopeful, however, with Patrick Stewart doing his best impression of the curmudgeonly Ebenezer Scrooge and coming around to the festive spirit, while there seems to be enough schmaltzy charm to pull in a sizeable audience come release.

In April of 2013, Gwyneth Paltrow was named America's Most Hated Celebrity by Star Magazine, which makes sense considering the amount of vitriol that's so regularly spewed at the Goop lifestyle magnate online. So why does the "Iron Man" star inspire so much anger? While Gwyneth is undoubtedly out of touch with the "average person" in a chronic and frequently cringeworthy sort of way, the amount of criticism directed at her feels, to me, out of all proportion to her so-called offenses. In contrast to the insufferable kowtowing of most celebrities who have made it their mission to prove how "relatable" they are to the public at large, Gwyneth is unapologetic about the fact that she grew up privileged (she's the daughter of actress Blythe Danner and late producer Bruce Paltrow) and has no idea what it's like to be live paycheck to paycheck. "I can't pretend to be somebody who makes $25,000 a year,...

3Rd Update, Monday, 3:15 Pm: The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies dropped some gold coins on its way to the bank today to deposit its actual results. The finale of Peter Jackson’s epic trilogy was off 1.7% from its Sunday five-day estimate of $90.6M, for a current reported cume of $89.1M. That figure still beats the first five days of The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug ($86.1M).
The Warner Bros./New Line/MGM film wasn’t the only one off from its Sunday: Sony’s Annie came in about $440K under today with $15.86M in third, while Fox’s Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb was down $200K.
Essentially, yesterday wound up not being as robust as expected for distribs with it being the last Sunday before Christmas. Warner Bros. projected $18.2M yesterday for Five Armies, but filed $16.73M, while Sony estimated $4.9M but came in closer to $4.5M.

If you’re wondering who’s going to be come out on top this Sunday at the Super Bowl, my money is on The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Sony have launched an epic first part to their Super Bowl TV spot for Marc Webb’s blockbuster sequel, and it is nothing short of brilliant.
The Internet is buzzing with the idea that it teases Gwen Stacy’s fate, but I can’t help but feel that that part of the comic books won’t be happening this time around. No doubt I’ll be eating my words in a few months’ time, but I really hope Webb and co. will save it for the next chapter.
In the past two months, we’ve seen an awesome first trailer, a little more comedy in the second, international trailer, and most recently a great little preview over New Year’s, and it’s all been absolutely brilliant,...

"You wanted to be the hero. Now you gotta pay the price." If the New Year's Eve tease wasn't enough to keep the excitement going for this summer's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, well the big game on Sunday should amp things up a bit. There will be a full Super Bowl spot for the comic book sequel from director Marc Webb this weekend, but in order to tickle your tastebuds, the first half (around 30 seconds) has been released online. It ends on a cliffhanger, and it might be a hint at the future fate of Spidey's girlfriend Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), which shouldn't be unfamiliar to the comic fans. Or it could be misdirection. Watch! Here's the first part of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Super Bowl spot from Sony Pictures: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is directed by Marc Webb and written by Jeff Pinker, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman.

The online viral shenanigans for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 are continuing energetically in the wake of the New Year's Eve business, and while that strange enemiesunite site doesn't look to be doing anything for another month, there's still the Daily Bugle on Tumblr. Much of the content is fluff, but its latest report fills in some plot between the first film and the sequel, and hints at a re-appearence of Rhys Ifans' Dr Curt Conners, Aka The Lizard. It transpires that post-Amazing Spider-Man, Conners has been put on trial and eventually convicted on twenty indictments including the murder of Captain George Stacy of the NYPD. His defence, that he only injected himself with the Lizard serum to prevent the corrupt Oscorp breaking it out on unsuspecting members of the public, did not fly with the jury. Probably because that isn't really a legal defence (what is that, a combination of necessity and insanity?...

Spider-Man is one of New York's most iconic superheroes, along with the Fantastic Four and the Toxic Avenger. So it makes sense that everyone's favorite wall crawler would use the Times Square New Year's tradition to debut new footage from this summer's hotly anticipated super-sequel "Amazing Spider-Man 2." Now take a look at the footage, introduced by Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee! Excelsior!
The footage focuses on Times Square, obviously, which if you'll remember a major set piece from Sam Raimi's original "Spider-Man" took place (that sequence with the Green Goblin and, for reasons that still remain fuzzy, Macy Gray). We see people milling around, with the nefarious Electro (Jamie Foxx), opening up a power grid and sucking all of the electronic juices out of it. Then, of course, Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield, once again) shows up and says, "Yo, Sparkles!" Then we get a nice little montage of some new footage,...

Gearing up for 2014, Ryan Seacrest and Jenny McCarthy promoted "New Year's Rockin' Eve" in the Big Apple on Monday (December 30).
The "American Idol" host wore a black overcoat, black tie, and navy blue pants as he waved at the crowds while the "View" co-host donned a black dress, white belt, and white scarf.
This year, the show features plenty of performances by acts including Blondie, Icona Pop, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and Miley Cyrus. Ringing in the new year after the ball drops will be Billy Joel, live from Brooklyn's Barclays Center.
Making sure the west coast isn't left out, Stacy “Fergie” Ferguson will host the show's version for those who are three hours behind NYC.

The Holiday Season is a time for family and giving, and these eight families have given us plenty of smiles and warmth all year long. Join us as we congratulate them on their first holiday celebrations!
1. Prince William & Kate Middleton:
It was arguably the most famous birth of the year, and Prince William and Kate Middleton welcomed Prince George into the world on July 22nd in London, England. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will celebrate their first Christmas as proud parents, and they couldn’t be more excited about their family expansion.
Following George’s arrival, a rep from Kensington Palace announced, "Mother, son and father are all doing well this morning. We would like to thank the staff at the Lindo Wing and the whole hospital for the tremendous care the three of us have received."

In the most purely enjoyable episode of this "Mad Men" season so far, we finally spent some time with Joan in her new role as Scdp partner, with Megan on the soap set, with Dawn outside of the office, and with Peggy in a Draper-style pitch meeting.
And we were reminded that Don is a hypocritical jerk (apparently some people are still shocked by this?) with serious control issues, but also a deeply wounded soul. That's classic "Mad Men." And while "To Have and to Hold" wasn't on the level of the series' very best episodes, it was pretty darn close.
[Note: In the spirit of showrunner Matthew Weiner declaring that this season is about Dr. Arnold Rosen telling Don, "People will do anything to alleviate their anxiety," we're tracking the happiness of key characters week by week.]
The "Mad Men" happiness index, week three:
1) Roger (last week, #1): Roger's ennui is sure to resurface at some point, but he's still on top of the world this week -- trying to pay off Harry Crane to keep him happy while cracking jokes at his expense.

As each year draws to a close we let our wonderful team of writers loose on the movie landscape to throw plaudits at the great and good and fettered eggnog at those responsible for the bad and cinematically reprehensible.
Here’s our take on the highs and lows of Movietown in 2012.

Buoyed by a stunning turn by Marion Cotillard, the CG artists here do a remarkable and flawless job of presenting to the audience what looks like a genuine amputee. It’s Monday, so we all know what that means! Yes, it’s time for another rundown of DVDs and Blu-ray’s hitting stores online and offline this week. Pick Of The Week
The Dark Knight Rises (DVD/Blu-ray)
It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act. But everything will change with the arrival...

With the New Year almost upon us and the news streams largely quiet, this is the one of the few annual times the studios choose to bombard us with preview pictures from their upcoming output. Warners has shoved a raft of new pictures online, with one of particular interest - the first official image from Ben Affleck's Argo.
Affleck passed on the chance to make the new Superman for this one, an intriguing ripped-from-real-life tale of six American hostages and the audacious plan to evacuate them safely from Iran.

Just a few updates today, but they're fun.
Grimm premiered to surprisingly strong ratings last night (6.5 million viewers, 2.1 million in the 18-49 demo), or as NBC puts it in the press release, the "largest non-sports 18-49 audience on the night by any network since last year's "New Year's Rockin' Eve" on ABC (2.8 rating)."
What makes this news particularly great is that the show aired opposite the most watched baseball game in the last seven years, and after one of the lowest rated episodes of Chuck ever (the show hit a series low in the key demo, according to TV by the Numbers).
NBC is re-airing the Grimm pilot tonight at 9 pm and the episode will also be shown on Syfy this Tuesday at 7 pm.
Here is the synopsis for next Friday's episode, "Bears Will Be Bears:"
A barbaric family history is revealed when Nick and Hank investigate a case of breaking and entering.

Gurney’s “Sylvia,” opening tonight (1/14) at the Sierra Madre playhouse outside L.A..
“It’s a role I’ve been wanting to play for a long time. This play was originally written for Sarah Jessica Parker, who did it in New York. It’s the most charming story about a dog’s relationship to its owner. This husband brings a dog home, the wife doesn’t want the dog. and it really becomes this love triangle,” reports Tanna.
She’s prepared for the role by – what else? – hanging out with her dog, a Shiba Inu “that looks like a little wolf.

Joel and Ethan Coen aren’t just great filmmakers, they’re world-class cinephiles as well. Take a look at their filmography and you’ll find movies that are love letters to Old Hollywood gangster flicks (Miller’s Crossing), film noir (Blood Simple, The Man Who Wasn’t There), screwball comedies (The Hudsucker Proxy), and even Wallace Beery wrestling pictures (Barton Fink). For True Grit, their first foray into the sagebrush-and-saddle territory of John Wayne, EW reached out to the brothers Coen to find out their picks for their favorite Westerns. Here, in their own words, are their all-time faves:

HollywoodNews.com: Will 2011 be the year that Tom Sturridge joins his close pal Robert Pattinson as a leading big screen dreamboat? That’s what some movie insiders are predicting, with the 25-year-old British actor of “Vanity Fair” and “Pirate Radio” fame coming up with back-to-back films of interest this year, including the highly-anticipated adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road” with Kristen Stewart and Garrett Hedlund.
First, however, there is the February release, “Waiting for Forever,” in which Sturridge plays a street performing juggler who chases after the love of his life, “The O.C.’s” Rachel Bilson. The cast also includes “The Vampire Diaries”‘ Matthew Davis, “Eurotrip’s” Scott Mechlowicz, Blythe Danner, Nikki Blonsky, and Richard Jenkins.
“It’s hard to describe. It’s somewhere between a love story and a quirky kind of comedy. It will make you laugh and cry,...

HollywoodNews.com: The New Year is here at last! We’ve dusted off our trusty celebrity crystal ball and we’re ready to make our fearless predictions about Hollywood and its stars in 2011.
New “American Idol” judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez will show the public how enormously watchable they can be when talking as themselves, and will give the show an injection of fresh life. Each has given us memorable interviews through the years. Unlike Ellen DeGeneres (sorry, Ellen), they know their stuff musically. And early indications are that Tyler is in top witty and wise form on the “AI” panel.
The success of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” will make zombies as fashionable as vampires. Just wait for Halloween, when that embalmed and hungry look will be everywhere.
Speaking of which, Hugh Hefner, 84, and his 24-year-old fiancée, ‘Playboy’ model Crystal Harris,...

In Oakland, California, riots and looting occurred just hours after a White police officer was convicted on a lesser charge for killing 22-year-old Oscar Grant III on New Year's Day in 2009. Hundreds gathered in what initially seemed to be a peaceful protest. But once the officer was charged with involuntary manslaughter, the ruling sent shockwaves to Oakland natives. Essence.com contributor Jamilah Lemieux wonders what message the California courts are sending about the value of a Black man's life...Here's what you had to say:Kristina commented via Facebook: "I felt that the verdict was proof that police officers aren't expected to take responsibility for their actions and get away with murder. Literally." Stacy wrote via Facebook: "The verdict was unjust and unfair, but that is why people need to get actively involved in the legal system."...

I’m actually the wrong type of gay to know how bad of an idea this is, but even from my nerdy perch, I have a feeling remaking A Star is Born with Russell Crowe and Beyonce is likely to start riots in WeHo, Dupont Circle, and the West Village. Thoughts?
Hasbro has been intent on making more toys into movies. Bad ideas currently underway have included Monopoly and Battleship, but one of the ideas I was into is Candyland. Now they’ve announced that Taylor Lautner is going to play Stretch Armstrong. I don’t know why I think I like this idea, but it could be that Stretch Armstrong was made to squeeze and grope, and I know Taylor is legal in three days.
When I was in first grade, my school got all new desks with brightly colored tops. Mine was red that year. But...

Warning: This article contains spoilers about Torchwood: Children of Earth.
Fans of the British scifi show Torchwood found many things to love about the program: the immortal, cheeky and omnisexual Captain Jack Harkness as played by the irrepressible John Barrowman; the spunky Gwen Cooper and her hubby Rhys Williams; the sweet Toshiko and the randy Owen, not to mention a whole host of alien critters wreaking mayhem across the world.
But of all the things fans loved about the Doctor Who spin-off, one of the most surprising was how hard so many viewers fell for Ianto Jones, the buttoned up office administrator who turned out to be so much more than the unassuming office lackey we first thought he was -- including becoming the lover of Captain Jack.
Unfortunately, as all Torchwood fans know too well, the organization has a high mortality rate and on Day 4 of the Children of Earth miniseries,...
