Finally something funny for Christmas.
Sleepin_Dragon31 December 2020
Would it not have made more sense for The BBC to have put this on Christmas night, instead of Mrs Brown's Boys, this was altogether funnier, better, and gave us a break from Covid.

The full ensemble cast are here, were they perhaps socially distancing from one another? They were all on point, everyone was given a piece of the action, nobody was left in the shadows.

Quite often a bit of conflict when all the characters gather, they played on that, using it as the main theme.

For the first time in the show's history, I felt that the main comedy turn came from Deborah Grant, the drunken Wendy was side splitting throughout, such great timing and delivery. That's not to take away from the others, everyone was on point. Highlight had to be Toby's big scene.

I just want to mention the legendary Bobby Ball here, of course I've loved watching him in this show, but a comedian I grew up watching, I don't mind admitting I sobbed when I heard he had passes away, devastating for his family and friends. I am sure Lee Mack will dedicate an episode to him. RIP Bobby.

This was so funny, 9/10.

Resolutions

Thankfully Lee Mack kept the Covid jokes to a minimum. He knew as this was not going out on Christmas Day, the same toilet roll gags would had been done to death by now.

It took me a while to realise that the way the characters were seated was to maintain social distancing. It was very well done.

There was a good use of a Chekhov gun. A sherry trifle.

Lee and Lucy have the family around for New Years Eve. All the bickering leaves Lucy aghast and they all make New Year's Resolutions to make a change for the better about themselves.

There was more emphasis on Wendy this time who got drunk. Usually she is second fiddle to Geoffrey.

Good god, Toby really let rip at the end. The whole show was very funny and it's all down to the writer's Lee Mack and Daniel Peak. Those zingers come thick and fast. I really wish other comedy writers study this show more.

Sadly it seems this will be Bobby Ball's final appearance. A fond farewell and hope he is rocking elsewhere.

Disappointing

Warning: Spoilers
I love this show, but found this episode sub standard. Drunk Wendy was very funny, but Lucy was over the top irritating in this episode. Toby's swearing rant at the end of the episode was basically just a copy/paste of Lucy's swearing rant in the babysitting episode a few seasons back. It was still entertaining but given Lee had so long to write the episode, it was just a bit stale. Bittersweet to watch Bobby Ball's last ever performance.

Lost it's cleverness

I have found over the last few seasons that this show has seriously declined. It was once very witty with clever humour. These days the humour has resorted to rants, name calling and tedious writing. This episode proves all of this in a nutshell. Compare this to the original episodes in the first 4 or 5 seasons and you'll be wondering if it's the same show. Not because of the setting, because of the decline in clever humour. The acting has also taken a massive nosedive, especially Lucy. Very sad. They should have knocked it on the head once they got married. RIP Bobby Ball. I hope filming this rubbish wasn't where you caught C19.

Thanks for the effort, but sadly not a great resulting episode

Warning: Spoilers
While it's admirable that they were able to put together a festive special of this BBC sitcom at all, what with all the restrictions in place, the real test of a comedy is whether it's funny or not. Unfortunately I didn't find this funny.

Seven character sat bickering for 40+ minutes grew a bit stale for me over time, and although there was the usual mix of clever jokes and good performances (lovely to see the now much missed Bobby Ball) this wasn't one of the better episodes for me, especially when it descended into a swearing rant at the end.

Totally disagree about the criticism of the character of Lucy though.
