An Xmas gift to trade on Boxing Day
ta-9825118 December 2021
As a UK Xmas RomCom Movie, I really wanted to enjoyed this movie, unfortunately I didn't.

It didn't feel festive, the characters made a lot of strange decisions which took me out of the moment and a lot of the jokes were off. I understood and appreciated what they were going for with a lot of them but many of them felt forced. This isn't due to the culture either as I completely relate to the likes of Blue Story and Kidulthood despite many wider audiences feeling that they sometimes appear 'over acted'.

Most of the romantic couples were lacking chemistry and there were some kid fight scenes which I genuinely couldn't tell if they were meant to come across as real or fake.

There were some good things about it though. At its heart it's a story about family. Notably breaking away from the pains and anchors caused by your immediate family when creating your own path. It also shines a light on a different type of UK Xmas celebrations and some of the challenges and stereotypes that certain groups have to fight within their own culture.

A good idea but poor execution. Ultimately it didn't feel like it was worth a trip to the cinema to see it.

Not very Christmassy or much fun tbh
gazmar623 December 2021
I was expecting a Christmas movie of sorts, a RomCom even, but sadly this wasn't funny and the romance was lacking too. I didn't know what to make of it really, a black British movie with a couple of token white people, ok, it makes a change but it didn't make it good. It was a bit of a fashion show and music video but I didn't actually know any of the cast, (apart from the 2 )who were mainly mediocre to bad actors. The story is full of cliches about successful people , a love triangle and a dysfunctional British-Caribbean family who all come together just before Christmas, I don't think they even made it to Boxing Day though !?, At least they didn't go all out and have proper snow in London, because that usually spoils Britflicks for me. There were some good night scenes of London but they didn't actually make the most of the location. Too slow and too long, with a predictable conclusion. Just not my cup of tea.

Predictable and boring
malcolmgsw8 December 2021
I give this 4/10 only because of the good cinematography. The film was so dull and lacking in entertainment value that I fell asleep for a time, fortunately. If you have the urge to see it I suggest you go before the end of the first week as it won't be there a second week.

Can I add that checking on the reviewers who have given this 10/10 I have found that, surprise surprise, many of them have only reviewed this film. Sets you thinking.

Low expectation went lower
lounisproduction-564848 December 2021
How can I describe this.

It's like watching a very long episode of Eastenders And I hate Eastenders.

The main character man has no charisma and it would make it almost impossible that two stunning women would fight over him.

Then goes all the cliche and a predictable ending.

A fun Xmas movie with a great soundtrack
coombsstephen3 December 2021
This is a funny tale that does its job as a heart warming feel good film. It is a bit obvious at times and had some ridiculous coincidences but that doesn't distract from the film.

The best bit of the film though is the excellent choice in music along with some characters.

Well worth a watch for Xmas.

The worst pain I've ever endured
samchilds5 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'm feeling a little out of step here, what with all the glowing reviews. This was easily the most horrendously boring, dreary, interminable film I've ever sat through.

Each time a scene ended my heart broke anew, knowing I was about to endure another 15 or 20 or 10,000 minutes of pointless, ambling dialogue that accomplishes nothing. The film bumbles from one disjointed, drawn out slab of a scene to another, characters kiss, act amateurishly, kiss again, argue, storm out, run back, kiss, dance, storm out again, storm back, put on an accent so cringeworthy I wanted to swallow my own neck, and everyone laughs (ON SCREEN - no one in the audience laughs once). This happens several thousand times, and each scene lasts four hours.

After days of this excruciating torture I thought "at least it will be over soon." Then one of the 14 million characters announces that it's Christmas Eve. I groaned audibly, racked with anguish. There's still another two days of this to go. I hoped I'd left enough water for my dog. Seemingly months later another character angrily announces that Boxing Day is cancelled, causing me to bellow THANK GOD, slap my knees in relief and stand to leave. Sadly this still wasn't the mercy killing I prayed for, and only a fraction of the running time had passed.

One thing I cannot stand in any film is a 'playful' food fight. Awful. Awful. Awful. Awful. AWFUL. A grown up should never throw food at another except in pure fury, which should be returned in kind. So of course, when the film finally approaches something resembling a dramatic moment, some lass laughingly chucks a cake at a bloke. And instead of this being the instigating point for a mass brawl, as it would be in any reasonable household, the actors all have a chance to show HOW MUCH FUN IT WAS TO WORK ON THIS PROJECT and start lobbing cakes at one another. At this point the film went from being simply awful to being the datum point from which I will measure all future suffering. I have been through several rectal surgeries in my life, causing no small amount of temporary faecal incontinence. I would smilingly lie down for several more, rather than live through this ageless crime again.

Although Boxing Day is sold as a Christmas rom com, be warned. There is barely any Christmas, certainly no com, and bizarrely, no Boxing Day. I don't think they actually ever get to Boxing Day. Someone else will have to confirm that. I'd punched my own eyes closed by that point. I can only assume the cast and crew realised they were in breach of the Geneva Convention and wrapped things up a day early. This marks the only charitable and decent decision they made.

My daughter pointed out that by the end of the film nothing is different from the beginning. An astute and depressing observation. I'm going to go ahead and presume that rather than this being the filmmakers' existential comment on the futility of change, they simply forgot to include a plot. Thankfully, the children weren't disappointed, and were laughing with me at how hysterically bad this flattened arc of a panto truly is.

It brought us closer as a family in our shared contempt, and for that, at least, I am grateful.

Merry Christmas.

charming but needs better post production
indianamaddie25 December 2021
It was great to see black british representation without the struggle or strife. Considering this is Ameen's first feature film, I think he did a good job. It defo has an indie film kind of vibe.

The lead male character wasn't correctly casted imo, he isn't buff enough for two stunners to be fighting over him. And he's not very likeable.

I love the mum and her partner. Their story was cute! Aja is amazing as always. The audio and editing could do with a little more work but a great great effort.

I was confused about the Caribbean and African blending of the families at times - it seems like everyone was just 'black'.. so it was abit annoying to see they disregarded the variety and disparities between the two cultures.

That said, half the bias fools on here are spewing hate and prejudice with their 1/2/3 stars. Was it amazing? Meh but its really not as bad as these "critics" are saying. IT'S A CHEESY HOLIDAY FILM - LIGHTEN UP!!

Happy I could support the beginning of something so forward thinking, I cant wait to see where he goes from here!

Really missed the mark.
kwengmaster12 December 2021
This film feels very forced. Very disappointed, especially with how good the casting seemed. Didn't represent Caribbean culture at all for me and just felt if anything stereotypical and shallow. No character depth just typical cliche's : the loud sibilings, unfaithful father etc. The scripting just feels like a mash-up of keywords used in the black community, half the time sentences didn't even make sense. Zeze Mills was the only one who could act in the entire film. Very painful experience, had to walk out.

Honestly dreadful.

Dull writing, characters and about as Christmassy as a rock
jambon756 December 2021
Don't be fooled by this being called Boxing Day or being set at Christmas, it's got all the festive feeling of Halloween 3!! Walked out after 30 minutes. Didn't have high hopes but this film managed to miss those already low expectations. Writing is weak and you don't care a single bit for any of the characters because of this. Wooden performances don't help either. One of those projects where the writer/actor/director are the same person so it's a proper vanity project with zero quality control because they're doing it all. The plot is basically a series of contrived misunderstandings and implausible unexplained events you could see coming a mile away which did nothing to further the film in the 30 minutes I sat through and that's why I left. Actually went for a burger and ended up being sick 6 hours later that night but that was still a preferable outcome to watching this film till the end. Stick to Love Actually if you are in need of some British festive fun.

Lovely Christmas feel good film
mrjgordon4 December 2021
I actually really enjoyed this! It was a pleasant surprise and really funny. I loved the casting, acting and the music.

It is something I'd look forward to watching every year around Christmas time I think. Nice feel good film with important messages about love and family. My friends enjoyed it too.

10/10 from all of us!

Predictable, but with infectious characters
exceladeogun23 December 2021
Boxing day It has a nice and upbeat styling with a beautiful sprinkle of culture (black, British and American). The plot is stuffed and convoluted, this may help keep its pacing going steadily, but a deep look can reveal how thin the main plot is, and needing of more conflict. The characterization and cast is what elevates the movie; the perky and good-humoured performance the cast delivers is strong to carry the movie.

If I'm to judge from the original songs Leigh Anne Pinnock delivered, I'm really not excited for her solo era as a musician.

Worst film I've seen at the cinema in years
JulietRomeo12 December 2021
If I could have rated it zero stars I would have

There is nothing good about this film at all

The main character was so full of self pity that he was impossible to like at all. The younger brother character was just totally unbelievable - I couldn't imagine anyone his age acting in real life the way he does in this film .

The only 2 characters who seemed genuine were the mother and her boyfriend - the rest were cheesy, cringeworthy , and totally over the top and for whom you felt nothing for whatsoever .

Seriously , don't waste your time or money .

Awful film.

What a great Christmas movie

A good heart warming christmas movie! I recommend it to everyone who likes Christmas movies. The actors are all good! I went to see it twice because I really liked it. Don't listen to the negative reviews, go and make your own opinion. This film is worth watching.

A fun, happy Xmas film
oliverpotteruk6 December 2021
I obviously I didn't go into this expecting a classic, but it was a fun and funny Christmas film and probably the first time i've ever seen black people in a Christmas film.

I would say it was trying too hard to be like Love Actually, but it was probably deliberate.

It's a good distraction from the current Covid gloom anyway!

It's exactly what you expect
tchiura23 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Writing is sloppy and story-lines feel forced. Georgia and Melvin actually display some sprinkle of chemistry only in the final 10 minutes. Awkward, almost like the editors realised post-production "oh wait, we need to actually give these supposed soul mates a real moment." Jamaican accents got really cringe. I'll give them a pass though because Melvin in one scene acknowledges the inauthentic exaggerations (great self-awareness from the crew). And they were somewhat necessary given the history of black-British culture.

Ultimately this movie has an elite cast who shine at every limited chance. Personally I enjoyed all of Aretha/Boopsy's scenes. I haven't looked into it yet, but I would not be surprised if all her lines were impromptu. Each of her interactions felt so genuine, especially the one making fun of Georgia with "buff" jokes after her break-up. Most of the lighthearted scenes in Boxing Day are well executed. You get to experience a few real laugh out loud moments. If they could re-do this movie, they should've just leaned all in on the rom-COMEDY aspect. Especially with the love triangle. Despite the repeated rhetoric from supporting cast on how Georgia/Melvin were perfect together, the movie vibe/ambience never resonated her threat (resulting in a forced kissing scene). Music was phenomenal, though admittedly Georgia probably got one too many solo concerts in there. One of the more wholesome scenes is Lisa getting a package to her room with snacks and an iPod playing Party Hard by Donae'o. A really wholesome "welcome to my city" moment.

Is this a 10/10 movie? Probably not. However, it still is a really fun movie. When I chose to watch it I was looking for something not too serious (the antithesis of Spiderman No Way Home and the Matrix Resurrections) but fun. And boy this movie delivered quality relatable people of colour banter we hardly see onscreen. Movie's best moments lied in the black family dynamic and nuances you never see on TV. Such as how the families will go from an utter jovial mood to intense bickering over the most trivial issues (and vice-versa). As a black man I can vouch this sums up most of my festive season experiences growing up. Struggling to give a rating, as I'm typing I keep flipping between a 6 and an 8 (might as well give a 7 right?).

Worst movie ever!

I Literally fell asleep half way through the movie. The sattire used against religion is highly offensive. Boring humour and acting was terrible by the main characters. Save your money and don't watch. 0 stars from me.

Soundtrack was better than the movie....
bangel33223 January 2022
It was a typical Christmas romantic dramedy.

I would have preferred more comedy though. I was expecting lots of laughs and there were really only a few. So a bit of wasted talent there. But a decent watch.

Shockingly bad
andymharris8 December 2021
If I could give it zero stars then I would.

From within the first 10 minutes I sat in the cinema and realised this movie was going to be terrible.

Completely formulaic and predictable from the very beginning. The acting is terrible, the sound mixing is terrible, although the cinematography isn't too bad in some scenes, it is very inconsistent. Too many characters have too many lines with little idea of who they are in respect to the main characters so they may as well not be there. It became very clear that some scenes were only inserted to pad the runtime and characters often have the ability to virtually teleport from one scene to the next across London in a faster time than the main characters managed which gives you a hint as to how bad the editing and continuity management is.

All in all it tries to be a "Love Actually" clone but with a near all black cast, which could have been a refreshing bit of cinema but fails miserably due to the above.

If you have not seen it yet then save your time and money and give this one a solid miss.

Fun and Fresh
johanna-690-6996721 March 2022
Aja Naomi King is a delight, as always, and Aml Ameen sparkles - he's clearly one of the next breakout stars. I loved the bits of British-Carribbean culture, and the tie in to Christmas and Holiday traditions. This was a truly fun and heartwarming film, with a fresh spin on the "Christmas Movie" tropes we've seen before. Not to mention Leigh-Anne Pinnock's singing, which was gorgeous.

Slow start that improves
gemmagargette28 December 2022
I found the beginning a little slow to start, I think this is mainly due to the main character beginning in the USA and the introduction of his ex-girlfriend with no explanation at first. However, once the whole family is introduced this film becomes funny, touching and a great insight to a different culture for me.

I don't know how accurate it is to the British - Caribbean culture but given the cast and from what I have experienced of that culture I believe it is close. I loved the way the family had each other's backs whilst being brutally honest and I thought it was an excellent way to show that in Christmas/Holiday films it's not all perfect families that sit around baking and making ornaments.

I would definitely recommend a watch.

Leave it in the box.
grelana18 December 2021
Formulaic, predictable, in short you deserve a medal if you make it to the end. You know those afternoon TV serials, full of unknown actors trying to inject melodrama into a lifeless script? Well this film is about that level, the actors are second-rate (apart from the always excellent Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Stephen Dillane) and the dialogue consists mainly of shouting matches separated by banality. As for Miss Leigh-Anne Pinnock, whoever told her she could act as well as she can sing, was quite correct. She is bang ordinary at both.

Utter rubbish
chris_rowe-881-1688209 December 2021
I think entertainment is getting to a dangerous place now with trying to appease social issues, I doubt a couple of years ago this would've made cinema release, it's a straight to dvd, streaming platform at best. The fact the cast is 95% black doesn't influence my opinions as there are plenty of amazing all black films and shows, but it's clearly influencing people to be too scared to say no to movie or show ideas to be labelled a racist.

The acting is horrific, it stars mostly D-list tv actors with a few better known ones and the obligatory GOT character, plus the girl from little kid who is genuinely hideous at acting.

There is no chemistry between anyone, the dialogue is terrible, the jokes miss every time and the lead guy was below par in the bill so should definitely not be the lead. I get he wrote it but why not do what's best for the movie and be humble not cast yourself knowing by your poor career that it won't work.

There is nothing enjoyable here, it drags, it's literally a love actually rip off staring black people, it's as tragic as it sounds. Also don't think the ghetto talk is always needed, it's so cliched and stereotypical to go that route, it's just dull.

There's nothing good here I promise you, the only people scoring it well are those scared to criticise in this weak climate.

Awful, I gave it 2 just because it's Xmas.
