Founded by three former Village Roadshow executives in 1997, The Asylum’s brief is simple: dirt-cheap rip-offs of popular hits, usually headlined by a washed-up performer. Made for so little money that they never post a loss, this is where lovers of bad acting, shoddy effects and dopey narratives come to get their fix.
For all their popularity, though, movies like Almighty Thor and Abraham Lincoln Vs Zombies are actually pretty dull. Executed with all the panache of a bored teenager serving fast food, the films are more interested in picking your pocket than in giving you a good time.
For the liveliest and most entertaining rip-offs, you have have to go back as far as the 1970s, when blockbusters like The Exorcist, Jaws and Star Wars helped launch the trend for fast and cheap imitations. Some of these “mockbusters” are terrifically entertaining, some are so bad they really are worth watching and,...

Just in case anyone forgot, production company The Asylum are the masterminds behind SyFy’s most recent cultural phenomenon, Sharknado. You know, that creature feature about a tornado filled with sharks? I’ve inserted the above image to jog your memory just in case you forgot about all the chainsaw fighting action, and now I’m sure you’re all chomping at the bit just thinking about how The Asylum can bring their unmatched cinematic prowess to the ever-popular zombie genre. One can only assume we’ll be treated to another bit of episodic zombie brilliance, amassing viewing numbers comparable to The Walking Dead – no?
Seriously SyFy, why do you keep these guys in business? In an effort to let The Asylum get their schlocky paws on another popular genre, SyFy has ordered 13 episodes of a show titled Z Nation, a zombie action thriller “set three years after the zombie virus has gutted the country.

One hobbit will rule them all—for now, at least. A California federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order barring the release of Age of the Hobbits, a low-budget straight-to-video release from an independent film production company called The Asylum that was slated for release on Tuesday, just days before the opening of director Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Warner Bros., New Line, MGM, and Hobbit producer Saul Zaentz filed suit against The Asylum last month, charging that the company was trying to infringe on its copyrights and confuse consumers with its film.

The Asylum has been ripping-off Michael Bay's "Transformers" franchise ever since the first film hit theaters. In 2007, the company released a low budget, straight-to-dvd movie called "Transmorphers." Then in 2009, it released "Transmorphers: Fall of Man" and timed it with the release of Bay's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." But when "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" became the highest grossing installment, The Asylum didn't put out a third "Transmorphers." And now we know why. According to an official press release, the company has been in lengthy negotiations with Megan Fox to direct "Transmorphers 3: Rise of Man." After starring in the first two "Transformers" films, Fox was publicly fired and replaced with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Ever since, Fox has appeared in "Jonah Hex" and "Friends with Kids," while also looking for an opportunity to make her helming debut. "We're excited to have Megan Fox join The Asylum team to develop the...

Even though it's Sunday, that's not stopping a few tidbits of news from creeping online, including this latest story about The Watching Hour, a new spec script from a pair of writers who are apparently the grandsons of Dick Van Dyke.
Per Deadline New Line closed a deal Friday night for The Watching Hour, a horror film written by Carey and Shane Van Dyke that will be produced by Mary Parent and Michael Connolly of Mad Hatter Entertainment. The spec's described as a home invasion film, only with aliens.
If the name Shane Van Dyke sounds at all familiar to you, it's because he cut his filmmaking teeth by helping to bring us the mockbusters Paranormal Entity, Titanic II, and Transmorphers: Fall of Man. Good to see that he escaped from The Asylum.
In any event The Watching Hour sounds intriguing even from that short description so rest assured as...

Wait, um, what? How do you make a sequel to a movie that ended with the main character sinking to the bottom of the ocean? Well, leave it up to those nuts over at The Asylum to even attempt something as hilarious as Titanic 2, which, as you can tell from the title of this post, actually has a trailer you can watch and laugh at. Never heard of The Asylum before? Well, they're a production company who specialize in making really cheap (and cheesy) knock-offs of films to capitalize on the more popular film with the similar name. In the past they've been responsible for movies like Paranormal Entity, Transmorphers: Fall of Man, Avh: Alien vs. Hunter, 100 Million BC, Snakes on a Train and Pirates of Treasure Island. Hilarious, right? And so are their movies! Hilariously bad, that is. So...

Usually, low-rent comedy genre house The Asylum (Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus, Transmorphers: Fall of Man) waits until just as a movie is released to unleash their own knock-off / parody of the project. But with Edgar Rice Burroughs and A Princess of Mars, the company gets a two-fer. Their new Princess of Mars is already close to finished, and with it the company can perhaps steal a few Avatar-related dollars while creating a product that will be ready on DVD shelves when Disney eventually begins to promote Andrew Stanton's John Carter of Mars. See the first teaser for Asylum's version of the Burroughs novel, after the break. The rights to the Burroughs novel are in the public domain, so this is one case where The Asylum doesn't have to do much tweaking with respect to names. And because James Cameron has said that Burroughs was an influence on Avatar,...

When a hail of raining "Meatballs" earns box office gold over the likes of the bloody, sexy, Megan Fox-starring "Jennifer's Body," it's clear that summer is truly over. Fall is upon us now, meaning that the days of the big Hollywood blockbuster will have to wait until next May. In the meantime, there's plenty of other film fare to look forward to and plenty to look back upon.
Earlier today, our friends at Hollywood Crush devised a list of movies that take place in autumn, but such an array of films is a bit too subtle for my tastes. Just hearing the word "fall" is enough to get my wheelhouse churning, because there are so many movies that have the word in their title... some of 'em good, some of 'em not so much.
For your viewing pleasure, behold our five most memorable flicks with the word "fall" in its title.

The Sci-Fi Channel's name change to Syfy makes me think of a scene from the classic miniseries "Roots". The evil white man wanted to change Kunta Kinte's name to Toby. They whipped him until he said it. Afterwards, a fellow African told him they can call him whatever they want; he knows his true name is Kunta Kinte. Bonnie Hammer can use that bullwhip on me all she wants; I know that Syfy will always be Sci-Fi, and not just because the words are pronounced exactly the same.
