Ashley Brucks has been tapped to lead Screen Gems, the Sony Pictures division behind the “Resident Evil” and “Insidious” franchises. A deal hasn’t been finalized and several other candidates were up for the post, but insiders say the job is Brucks’ and to expect a formal announcement to come soon.
She joins the company from Paramount, where she worked as head of development for Paramount Players, a production label focused on making comedies and genre fare. At Screen Gems, Brucks replaces Steve Bersch, who will leave the label when his contract ends in December. The decision was made by the executive, who had been with Sony for more than 15 years, serving in various capacities.
Brucks is a long-time executive at Paramount, working there for over a decade as an executive vice president and later a senior executive vice president. Paramount Players was launched by Brian Robbins, who later became the studio chief,...

It’s Naked and Afraid, Robinson Crusoe-style. Naked and Afraid: Castaways, the latest spinoff of the popular reality series, takes nine former cast members and strands them on a deserted island somewhere in the Pacific, with no clothes, tools, or supplies. Over the next 21 days, they’ll have to fight to survive, eventually making their way to a designated extraction point, where they’ll signal a ship for rescue.
The Naked and Afraid Castaways cast includes familiar faces from past seasons, including a fan-favorite competitor who previously completed an Xl challenge and a person who appeared on the spinoff Naked and Afraid of Love. A few cast members have also appeared on other reality shows, including The Amazing Race.

SXSW announced another wave of film programming today, including an eighth Midnighter.
“Midnighters don’t need to be exclusively horror films, they just need to perk you up and get your blood pumping,” said Peter Hall, Film & TV Festival Programmer. “That’s why this year’s SXSW Midnighters class is a mix of horror, bone-crunching action, and mind-melting genre hybrids. Some of them introduce new, terrifying lore to the canon of suburban horror movies,...
