George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road spent so much time in development that its previous star, Mel Gibson, seemingly got too old for the action role. Gibson was replaced by Tom Hardy in the 2015 film, which went on to become one of the greatest action films of all time. Fans always wondered whether the Og Max Rockatansky would meet with the new one in any of the future installments. Miller confirmed that it wouldn’t happen and had a perfectly valid reason for it.

Mad Max: Fury Road was released in 2015 and the critically acclaimed film is yet to receive a sequel after nearly a decade. Miller has moved on to focus on the prequel film, Furiosa, where Anya Taylor-Joy will play the younger version of Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa from the 2015 film.

For decades, the Mad Max franchise has brought the outer reaches of chaos and imagination within the audience’s reach. From the brain of George Miller was born an apocalyptic wasteland that can neither be defined as dysfunctional nor dystopian since Mad Max has always existed within a framework of structured madness.

With Imperators, War Boys, Crow Fishers, and Buzzards populating and running wild on the wasteland, the world of Mad Max is devoid of limits. As such, to continue to explore such a world would mean breaking down its mystical elements and essentially making it redundant. The best solution in such a scenario is to quit while one’s still ahead and keep the legacy of Mel Gibson, George Miller, Charlize Theron, and Tom Hardy intact.

As far as iconic franchises go, George Miller’s Mad Max films are right up there among Hollywood’s favorite film series. Similar to his namesake George Lucas and his brainchild Star Wars, Miller created the dystopian action series back in 1979 with Mel Gibson, which was followed by three successful sequels in the 80s.

Between appearing in a minor role for Doug Liman’s Road House, singing alongside Taylor Swift on the chart-topping hit “Fortnight,” and making history with the first-ever RIAA-certified Double-Diamond single, everything is coming up Milhouse for Post Malone. In a candid interview with Total Film, producer Doug Mitchell disclosed an interesting titbit about the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road prequel movie, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
In the interview, Mitchell revealed that the groundwork for Furiosa‘s narrative was laid 15 years ago. The script was even completed before the critically-acclaimed Fury Road.
But here’s the real kicker: the initial vision for Furiosa was wildly different. Originally titled The Peach, it was planned as an anime film to be directed by Mahiro Maeda, known for his contributions in a number of anime films, from Neon Genesis Evangelion to Studio Ghibli films such as Porco Rosso and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.
However, the trajectory of Furiosa took a surprising turn, pivoting from its anime origins to emerge as a live-action film.

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival lineup was finally revealed at the sliver of dawn on Thursday, April 11. Festival director Thierry Frémaux and president Iris Knobloch unveiled this year’s crop of films across the many sections, from the Competition to Un Certain Regard, during a press conference beginning at 5 a.m. Et. See the full lineup below.
The 77th edition of Cannes comes to the Côte d’Azur May 14 through 25, and a few titles were already confirmed to be in the mix. There’s Francis Ford Coppola’s self-funded epic “Megalopolis,” which has already screened for a rarified few in the United States to much awe and speculation over what distributor might take on Coppola’s experimental vision. For his first feature since 2011’s “Twixt,” Coppola gathered a cast including Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Shia Labeouf, Giancarlo Esposito, Aubrey Plaza, and Jason Schwartzman for a sci-fi vision of a ruined NYC-like metropolis.

Mad Max prequel Furiosa contains a 15 minute-long action scene that was so complex, it took 78 days to shoot, it’s been revealed.
The production of Furiosa doesn’t appear to have been quite as arduous as Mad Max: Fury Road's, but that doesn’t mean director George Miller has reigned in his appetite for big, complex action sequences.
In fact, producer Doug Mitchell has teased that the upcoming Mad Max prequel – full title Furiosa: A Mad Max Story – contains a 15-minute vehicular action scene that took 78 days to shoot and took in 200 stunt performers.
It’s a production detail revealed in the latest issue of Total Film, in which it was revealed that the action scene was dubbed on-set as “Stairway To Nowhere.”
If Furiosa follows the usual storytelling structure, it sounds as though the set-piece will land in the middle of the upcoming film which stars Anya Taylor-Joy...

George Miller has pushed the “Mad Max” franchise to new levels of spectacle with each film, but the Australian might have topped himself with an action sequence in the upcoming “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.”
Miller’s new “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel, which is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month, stars Anya Taylor-Joy as a younger version of the titular character made famous by Charlize Theron. The film is based on the extensive backstory about Furiosa that Miller created to help his “Fury Road” cast and crew members immerse themselves in the film’s world.
While the massive success of “Fury Road” would be a hard act for any filmmaker to follow, Miller’s collaborators seem convinced that he found a way to match the scale of his Oscar-winning 2015 film. In a new feature in Total Film magazine, Miller’s producing partner Doug Mitchell revealed...

Prime Video’s Fallout TV show took the best pages out of other successful shows’ books: filming on location is always better than using those pesky green screens. The Wasteland in the new post-apocalyptic series is stunning, and to some fans, it looked vaguely familiar — but that’s only because it should be. After all, Fallout wasn’t this filming location’s first rodeo.
Fallout Found Its Perfect Wasteland
Even if Jonathan Nolan wanted to create the most authentic Fallout experience, he would not have been allowed to explode a real nuclear bomb to recreate the Wasteland, just like his practical effects-obsessed brother Christopher wasn’t allowed to for Oppenheimer, so the Fallout creator opted for the second best thing.
To film the Wasteland, the crew and cast headed deep into Namibia’s Namib Desert, far away from any civilization. Remember that ghost town from the show? It looked so...

Apparently, there’s a 15-minute scene in “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” that took more than 75 days to film and hundreds of stunt people to pull off.
“[‘Furiosa’] has one 15-minute sequence which took us 78 days to shoot” producer Doug Mitchell revealed in an interview with Total Film about the film, which is set to land in theaters on May 24. The production named the sequence “Stairway to Nowhere.”

The short scene not only took a hefty amount of days to shoot, it also required over 200 stunt people.

Mad Max: Fury Road was a symphony of well-choreographed, thrilling action, but Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will hopefully give it a run for its money. I have faith that director George Miller will deliver the action goods, but if you need a tease, Miller’s producing partner Doug Mitchell told Total Film that Furiosa has a 15-minute action sequence, which took almost three months to shoot.
Mitchel teased that Furiosa “has one 15-minute sequence which took us 78 days to shoot,” with nearly 200 stunt people working on it each and every day. The sequence was known as Stairway to Nowhere during production and is said to mark a turning point for Furiosa.

In 2016, George Miller came back to his cult franchise, Mad Max, at 70 years old and accomplished a major feat that amazingly put younger action directors in their place. With Mad Max: Fury Road, Miller was able to make an epic-scale, high-budgeted version of his wasteland fairy tale with some of the most eye-popping action sequences seen in some time. The sequel featured a new character played by Charlize Theron and Anya Taylor-Joy now embodies her for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The vehicular carnage crashes into theaters next month and promotion has been revving up with a cover story in the latest issue of Total Film, which features newly seen covers that you can view Here.
Now Collider has provided the previously unreleased images from the Total Film cover story. In the new pictures, readers are previewed to the evolution of Furiosa’s origin. In one image, the character still sports her long locks,...

Gu Xiaogang knows firsthand the impact that international film festivals can have.
Gu turned to the Beijing International Film Festival back in 2018 in an effort to get his breakthrough feature, Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains, made. He took his film to Bjiff’s project market and he walked away with the funds he needed after impressing investors with his story — an intimate look at a family’s life as it evolves across one year — along with his languid style.
The international film world has since felt much the same. Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains went on to become the first Chinese-language film to close Critics’ Week at Cannes in 2019, was selected among the top 10 films of the year by the leading French film magazine Cahier du Cinema in 2020 and led directly to Gu being named a co-winner of the Akira Kurosawa Award at last year’s 36th Tokyo International Film Festival,...

For those like myself, who adore witnessing Anya Taylor-Joy grace the scene in enchanting gowns adorned with flowing fabrics and soft pastel hues, it’s time to prepare for a shift.
She’s undergoing a style metamorphosis, embracing a fusion of ethereal textures and an all-black aesthetic.
Anya Taylor-Joy captivates with sartorial duality, first in a sophisticated Christian Dior black midi dress with sheer details and opera gloves at the Dior Pre-Fall show, then exuding edgy allure in a studded Ludovic de Saint Sernin mini dress alongside Chris Hemsworth at CinemaCon 2024 (Credit: Instarimages)
Lately, Anya has been gravitating towards a darker palette, likely influenced by her role in her upcoming movie, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which will hit theaters on May 24.
In this film, she embodies the titular character Imperator Furiosa, a member of a motorcycle horde and a younger iteration of the role Charlize Theron portrayed in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road.

With Dune: Part Two and Civil War in theaters, it’s already been a great year for sci-fi, and that doesn’t even count goofball flicks like Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, or any other movies with the word “empire” in the title. Sure, it’s not all perfect. Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson, has been pulled from the release schedule and there’s no way that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will release this year. But overall, 2024 has been a strong start for sci-fi movies.
Even better, 2024 isn’t even halfway done. Per tradition, Den of Geek has put together a list of the big sci-fi movies heading your way for the rest of the year. This list doesn’t include upcoming sci-fi movies without firm release dates, but it will when they are announced. It will also be updated to add any movies we may have missed,...

In 2016, George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road made a big splash at the Oscars claiming six Academy Awards from the astonishing 10 nominations. Starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, the 2015 movie is undoubtedly a post-apocalyptic masterpiece. But it was the fruition of the decades-long patience of Miller.
Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy in Mad Max: Fury Road
The casting, in particular, had been quite a long process, and inherently, the movie was far from being instantaneous. To begin with, it was nearly unimaginable to have any other actor playing Max after Mel Gibson elevated the character to an epic height in the Miller-directed 1979 movie, Mad Max.

When George Miller takes “Furiosa” to Cannes next month, it will be one of the biggest action films to hit the Croisette since the last time he took a “Mad Max” movie to the iconic festival. Miller’s groundbreaking blockbuster “Mad Max: Fury Road” was an instant hit when it premiered at Cannes in 2015, and his new prequel film promises to further expand the mythology by providing an origin story for Charlize Theron’s Furiosa, who is now played by Anya Taylor-Joy.
Finding more stories to tell about Furiosa was a simple task for Miller, who had already come up with an abundance of them while working on “Fury Road.” Speaking at CinemaCon this week (via Deadline), Miller explained that he wrote out new backstories for the characters of Hardy’s Max and Theron’s Furiosa for the cast and crew in the form of a full screenplay and novella before filming the 2015 franchise reboot.

Starting with the 1979 film featuring Mel Gibson, George Miller’s Mad Max film series has expanded to include multiple movies, including the 2015 Oscar-winning film Fury Road. The franchise is poised for further expansion with upcoming films like Furiosa and The Wasteland. It was the year 1979 when Mel Gibson starred in an iconic film that would go on to make history. Starring in Mad Max and portraying the role of a lonesome ranger on a desolate land, the film received rave reviews and developed into an iconic franchise that we know and love today.

The character of Tom Ripley first appeared in Patricia Highsmith's 1955 novel "The Talented Mr. Ripley," a salacious story about a con man who is hired to locate an old school chum named Dickie Greenleaf but who ends up becoming obsessed with him, killing him, and supplanting him. Ripley is not a charming con man, but he is staggeringly clever and possesses a talent for subterfuge. He's also driven by his baser desires, unable to resist pursuing the women and men he lusts after (Ripley is likely bisexual) or stealing the money he so desperately wants. Each time, Ripley gets away with it, as evidenced by the fact that he starred in five novels published through to 1991.

Reviews will have to wait till the Cannes Film Festival kicks off on May 14, but it’s not too early for a critic to weigh in on this year’s lineup — or how it looks on paper, at least, and what the selection might say about the state of things.
At the top of the press conference, festival director Thierry Frémaux noted that last year would be a tough edition to top. The two big winners of the 2023 competition, “Anatomy of a Fall” and “Zone of Interest,” went on to score Oscar best picture nominations, alongside Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The festival made strides toward gender parity, with nearly a third of the films in competition directed by women. And to complicate matters, Hollywood has since been hit by two production-stopping guild strikes, delaying films the studios might have sent to Cannes.

Sasquatch Sunset releases April 12th, 2024.
Do Sasquatches really exist? The answer is almost certainly “no,” but if they did, what would their day-to-day life look like? That’s the question that the Zellner Bros. set out to answer with their offbeat feature-film following an unconventional family of bigfoots (or is it bigfeet?). If you’re not quite sure what to make of that premise, don’t worry. Neither was I. I would implore anybody curious about this film to enter it with an open mind and a willingness to experience it for what it is: a one-of-a-kind blend of potty humor and poignant reflection, delivered in a way you’ve never seen before.

Yesterday, Warner Bros. kicked off CinemaCon 2024 in Las Vegas with the first big studio panel, igniting a wave of excitement among fans of the “Mad Max” franchise. Visionary filmmaker George Miller’s ‘Furisoa: A Mad Max Saga’ was a highlight of the event as the film’s backstory of our wasteland heroine unfolds over 20 years. During the panel, the Aussie writer/director teased the audience with hints of a potential third Mad Max story taking place a year before “Mad Max: Fury Road” in the form of a novella he had penned during the extended production delays on the 2015 epic alongside the “Furiosa” script.

Anya Taylor-Joy & Chris Hemsworth Bring Extended Look at 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga' to CinemaCon 2024
Anya Taylor-Joy wears a Mad Max inspired look while stepping out for the Warner Bros presentation at 2024 CinemaCon held at Caesars Palace on Tuesday (April 9) in Las Vegas.
The 27-year-old actress joined her co-star Chris Hemsworth and director George Miller as they unveiled an extended first look at their upcoming prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

When Fury Road had enough traction, we figured we had to do Furiosa.”

Since the "Furiosa" trailer first released in November 2023, one of the top questions on most fans' minds was exactly what the deal was with Chris Hemsworth's character, Dementus. From the trailers, he sure seemed like an antagonist, but he also felt a little too cool and fun to be a straightforward villain. Chris Hemsworth is always likable, after all, especially when he gets to use his native Aussie accent. At Warner Bros.' CinemaCon 2024 presentation in Las Vegas, attended by /Film's own Ryan Scott, director George Miller shed some light on creating the new villain Dementus for the upcoming prequel film, as well as his thought process on hiring Hemsworth for the role.

Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, and George Miller took the stage during the Warner Bros. panel. Warner Bros’ first big splash at its 2024 CinemaCon presentation today was George Miller’s Furiosa.

The trio showed off an extended first look today. We see Hemswroth’s Dementus, who’s something of white linen-clad prophet. He’s brought a young Furiosa. The trio showed off an extended first look today. We see Hemswroth’s Dementus, who’s something of white linen-clad prophet. He’s brought a young Furiosa. Similar to his namesake George Lucas and his brainchild Star Wars, Miller created the dystopian action series back in 1979 with Mel Gibson, which was followed by three successful sequels in the 80s.

George Miller has praised the "mystical" qualities of 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga' actress Anya Taylor-Joy.The 79-year-old filmmaker has helmed the post-apocalyptic action prequel flick and felt that Anya had all the right attributes to play a young Imperator Furiosa after seeing her performance in the movie 'Last Night in Soho'.Speaking at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Monday (08.04.24), George said: "There's something mystical about her, and yet, there's an accessibility. I learned that she was somebody who is very, very disciplined, even though she's very young. "She was a ballet dancer. was a ballet dancer. I understand the physical discipline as well as the emotional discipline they have. Australian filmmaker George Miller, whose origins story Furiosa will world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month before Warner Bros begins its global rollout May 22, says he’s still making Mad Max movies “because they’re very addictive.”
Miller was speaking at CinemaCon on Monday in Las Vegas where he received the International Career Achievement in Filmmaking Award. During a discussion with Warner Bros President of International Theatrical Distribution Andrew Cripps, Miller looked back at his path from medical doctor to director and delved into some of the history of the 1979 classic Mad Max, as well as sharing some insights into the upcoming Furiosa.
Miller, who was “always interested in cinema,” originally trained as a doctor and kept practicing even after he made Mad Max “because even though it was successful, I didn’t think I had it in me to be a filmmaker.” Eventually however, “I kept going.

Before Focus Features released Edgar Wright’s neo-noir thriller Last Night in Soho in October 2021, the filmmaker showed a cut to pal George Miller. The Australian director was so struck by star Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance that he went back to Wright with an idea.
“I said, ‘Gee, she’d be good for…,’” detailed Miller, who then said Wright interjected before he could finish the thought. “[He said], ‘Do it, do it. She’s great.’” Miller took Wright’s concise advice and cast Taylor-Joy in the title role of Warner Bros. Pictures’ Furiosa, the newest installment of his blockbuster Mad Max franchise. She plays a young woman in a dystopian universe who was snatched from home only to fall into the hands of the great Biker Horde led by the Warlord of Dementus, played by Chris Hemsworth. Furiosa is then forced to withstand many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.
