- Teketeke synopsis: Movie starts out with a woman riding a bus home after getting off of work at night. Behind her on the bus are 3 children who are talking loudly and throwing plastic bags at each other and talking about local urban legends. Such as their city hall used to be an execution site for criminals in the past and that severed heads will appear on its fence posts at night. One of the plastic bags hits the woman in the back of the head. Obviously annoyed she turns around and chides them for wasting time talking about untrue things like that. We then see that they are passing by a rail yard where trains are actively running. The woman is seen walking on an overpass above the trains. The woman wonders out loud about why she was so cranky towards the kids on the bus and blames it on being tired from work. While walking a sudden gust of wind blows by that makes the woman stop for a second. We then hear a small scratching noise that stops once the woman turns to look for what could be making the sound. Seeing nothing, she resumes walking only for the sound to start up again and then stop when she turns around. The woman asks if anyone is there but doesn't see anything. She starts walking again and the scratching gets louder. This time the woman turns around and freezes in her tracks. The view from the camera then changes to a low to the ground perspective looking at the woman with a horrified look on her face. The camera then rushes at the woman as the scratching sound rushes forward. The woman screams and runs. She runs down a tunnel and we hear the scratching sound following her. The woman runs into an alleyway behind some buildings and faces a dead end. We see the camera rush to the woman and stop right before approaching her. Then for some reason it slowly backs away. The woman hears voices and notices that from one of the nearby windows she can hear two kids discussing other urban legends like seeing a death God or your dead spirit in the mirror at midnight (like the bloody Mary legend). As the kids argue about what happens the woman slowly starts to walk out of the alleyway. As she does so she reaches into her purse and we see that there is a red key chain attached to it. Once the woman steps out of the alleyway the camera again rushes at her while she screams. We see red liquid (supposed to be blood but looks a little too thick, like simple red paint) flying through the air and we see the woman's face as she lands on her back. However, we then see that her legs are still standing up and her belongings on the ground next to her. As the legs/waist area tip and fall back away from the camera we see a lot of blood on the back wall. The woman struggles to breathe and dies. We then look back at the window where the kids were arguing. One of the kids asks if the other has heard of "Teketeke", as a shadow on the wall below them quickly flies by.
The next scene is of two high school girls watching some boys play soccer in the school yard from their classroom window. One of the girls is named Ayaka and is asking her friend Kana to help her out with asking out one of the boys. Kana apparently has known him for a while before, but tells Ayaka that she isn't friends with the guy and hasn't spoken to him much. Ayaka begs for help and Kana reluctantly agrees to talk to him after Ayaka promises to buy her lunch the next week. We then see Kana talking to Utsumi (The guy playing soccer that Ayaka has a crush on) and asking him if he would go out with Ayaka. Utsumi says that he doesn't know Ayaka but indicates that since he knows Kana he is willing to go out with Ayaka if she picks the activity. After he leaves Kana tells Ayaka the good news but also expresses as she did before that she doesn't see why Ayaka likes a carefree guy like Utsumi. Ayaka thanks Kana and starts to wonder about what she should wear.
Kana returns home and gets a phone call from her cousin Rie who asks Kana if she knows where she is right now. Kana's mother says that Rie is in Kana's room. Kana goes to her room and finds Rie on her bed. Rie looks a few years older than Kana, and the two appear to share a sisterly relationship in that Kana expresses annoyance at Rie for barging into her room but doesn't get outright angry with her. Rie teases Kana like an older sister would and says that Kana is at a stage where she is acting out. Kana says that she needs to change out of her school uniform and start studying. Rie jokingly tells Kana that she will watch her as Kana pushes her out of her room. Back at school the next day, Ayaka bounces up to Kana and tells her about her date with Utsumi. Ayaka says that he is a nice guy but they only talked about Kana the whole time since she is the only thing they both have in common. Kana reiterates that she doesn't really know Utsumi and wonders why Ayaka likes him. Ayaka tells Kana that Utsumi asked her to walk home with him. Kana excitedly congratulates Ayaka, but this turns to discomfort and a grumpy face when Ayaka begs her to go with her. Kana doesn't see why she needs to keep helping Ayaka with her love interests but the next scene is of the three of them sitting in a cafe together. Utsumi pulls out his new smart phone to show them how he can get good TV reception with it. What's being shown on the phone is a news story about body of a woman that was found cut in half by the rail yard (The woman we saw at the beginning of the movie). The reporter says that there are some people that the police are interested in speaking to but they currently don't have any suspects for the case. There are no witnesses and the locals say that the area where the body was found is normally deserted at night. Utsumi says that the news report reminds him of a story called Teketeke that he heard in elementary school. Ayaka says that she has heard the story too but Kana asks what it is. Utsumi explains that there is a ghost with no lower extremities that appears on the overpass above the train station at night. It makes a scratching noise that sounds like "teketeke" as it approaches you (The sound is from the ghost walking on her hands). Legend goes that if you look back it will cut you in half and you will die (you think?), and if you somehow manage to escape you will die for certain 3 days later. Kana says she hasn't heard this story before and Ayaka teases her by saying she forgets things all of the time. Ayaka excuses herself to go to the bathroom and while she is gone Kana asks Utsumi what he thinks of Ayaka. He replies that she is nice but that he only agreed to go out with her because Kana asked him to. He indicates that he probably won't pursue a relationship with her. Over Kana's shoulder we see that Ayaka heard what they said as she was walking away. Later after it gets dark outside, the three of them are outside of the cafe where Utsumi says goodbye and rides off on his bike. Kana and Ayaka begin to walk home together as Ayaka starts to ask Kana about Ustumi. Ayaka (clearly jealous) begins to suggest that Kana secretly likes Utsumi and starts to argue with her about it despite Kana insisting that she barely knows him and doesn't have any feelings for him either way. Kana tells Ayaka that she only accompanied them because Kana asked her to. Ayaka accuses Kana of thinking that she is stupid and angrily decides to walk home by herself. Ayaka walks off in a different direction as Kana watches her before going home by herself the way they both were originally going. Before she gets far however, a sudden gust of wind hits her in the back. Kana turns around and looks but doesn't see anything so she continues walking home. Meanwhile we see Ayaka walking over the same overpass above the trains that the woman from before was walking over. Ayaka is thinking out loud about the argument that she just had and feels that she had been unfair to Kana. She decides to go back and apologize but right as she is starting to turn around she hears a "teketeke" sound. As she looks behind her she sees a dark form on the other side of the bridge. It's dark but you can make out what appears to be someone with long dark hair covering their face (how original for a J-horror movie!) that is in the downward push-up position. Ayaka continues to look at the form as it starts to rise up, and to her horror, we see that the being has no legs or anything below the waist. Despite the camera clearly showing that the path Ayaka is on is flat, smooth, and clear of objects, Ayaka follows the typical horror movie cliche of turning to run only to trip over...nothing. (Maybe her own feet? I mean clearly, there was obviously nothing in her way.) As the dark form begins to move quickly toward her, Ayaka follows the next typical horror movie cliche of not trying to get up and get away, but she just sits there and stares at the thing that is now quickly running towards her on its hands. As it gets closer Ayaka screams, we see another batch of fresh red paint fly up unto the air, and then we see Ayaka's body lying on the ground separated at the waist. Teketeke stands (handstands?) next to the body for a second before jumping over the fence and off the overpass. The next day at school you can hear the kids in the hall talking about how Ayaka's body was found in two pieces and that there was blood everywhere. Kana is on the left side of the screen and can clearly hear them. She turns to face a locker and hunches down, either crying or at least looking ill. A teacher sees her and rushes to her side to see if she is okay. As she helps Kana stand up, the teacher says that there are people who want to talk to her. The teacher leads Kana into a room where two detectives from the police are interviewing Utsumi. They thank him for his time and Utsumi gets up and walks out as Kana walks in. Kana sits down and the detectives tell her that Utsumi told them that he had left Kana and Ayaka at the cafe. Kana confirms this and the detectives then ask what happened after that. For some reason Kana only gives vague answers to the police. Telling them that "nothing happened" after the group separated and that she doesn't know why Ayaka took a different way home than she usually does. (Not sure why she does this as she doesn't have anything to hide.) The only thing she does tell them is that they were friends and that Ayaka was the first person Kana talked to when she started going to this school. After the interview Kana is back home. She slumps down on the couch and turns on the television. We see a news report about how the boyfriend of the woman killed in the beginning of the movie has been arrested for the woman's murder. The reporter says that the man acted very nervously while speaking with police. Although he denies any involvement with the woman's death he had reported seeing another woman with no legs. Kana stares at the TV and we see the outline of tree branches on the window curtains behind her start to shake violently as a strong wind blows by. Kana turns and watches the shadows, not noticing the front door slowly opening. When she hears footsteps approaching she turns around and braces herself with a look of fear. The door opens wider to reveal... her mother returning from grocery shopping. Her mother asks what is wrong and Kana replies that everything is fine. Her mom sits down next to her and tells her that she can stay home from school tomorrow if she needs to. Kana indicates she is fine and plans on going back to school. The next day we see Kana sitting dejectedly at the bus stop as her bus pulls up in front of her, blocking the camera. After letting passengers on and off it pulls away and we see that Kana hasn't budged from her seat. As she continues to sit there she looks to her right and sees what I think is some kindergarten teachers escorting a group of kids around. One of them says to another kid that if they keep doing what they are doing they will be killed by Teketeke. The other kid snaps back, "Do you really believe that stuff?" We then see Kana walking down a street by herself when Utsumi pulls up behind her on his bike. Utsumi comments that he was expecting Kana to skip school to which she shoots back that he's one to talk. Ustumi says that he was worried about her and Kana tells him that she had lied to the police (again, not really sure why) and that she and Ayaka'd had an argument right before she was killed. Utsumi asks if Kana has some time to talk to which she replies that he should ask more politely. Later Kana is standing on a hill as Utsumi brings her an ice cream cone(?). Utsumi says that the only thing Ayaka ever talked about with him was Kana. Ayaka told him that Kana was the best friend anyone could have and that even when they fought, they would be back together by the next day. Kana turns away, hunches down, and begins to cry with Utsumi patiently waiting behind her. Then we see Kana getting a ride on the back of Utsumi's bike part way home. She asks him to let her off here but he offers to take her all of the way home. Kana politely declines since it would be the opposite way for Utsumi. Utsumi then passively asks Kana to go out with him. Kana just looks down at the ground and Utsumi gets the hint that this is a "no." Kana asks Utsumi if he saw the news report about the other woman getting killed and how the boyfriend of the woman said he saw a woman with no legs. Utsumi asks if Kana is talking about Teketeke and Kana comments that maybe Ayaka was killed in the same way. Utsumi replies that it may be the same culprit but that Teketeke is just a myth. Kana sadly agrees and starts to walk home by herself. It's now dark and Kana is standing at the same spot where she last saw Ayaka alive. She decides to walk over the train station overpass that Ayaka did. We see Utsumi on his way home stop his bike and turn around. Then we see Kana stopping at the spot where Ayaka died. There are already flowers placed there as a memorial and Kana bends down to add flowers of her own. While down there Kana starts to pray for Ayaka when a sudden gust of wind blows by like before. Kana then remembers what Utsumi said before about how if they look back Teketeke will kill them. Kana freezes where she is when she starts hearing the teketeke sound. As the wind continues to blow, Teketeke walks(?) up to Kana's side but Kana continues to stare at the ground. Eventually the wind stops and Teketeke disappears. Kana stands up, visibly shaken and starts to continue walking the other way. But suddenly she hears a young woman's voice call out her name. Thinking that it could be Ayaka (because that makes sense...) Kana turns around and sees Teketeke doing her push-up at the end of the overpass. Teketeke takes a short hop towards her and Kana runs the other way. Kana is now running down the street she was on before with Teketeke in pursuit. The camera switches back and forth from Teketeke's viewpoint which is colored over like she was the Predator but without heat vision. Eventually she runs into Utsumi again and climbs onto the back of his bike. Before he can ask what is going on she yells at him to start peddling away. We see him flying down the street with Kana on the back of his bike, and Teketeke gaining on them (She must have one heck of a workout routine!). Kana yells at Utsumi to go faster. Although he asks why, he never looks back. At one point they must hit a bump or something as the bike crashes and both of them are on the ground (honestly it just looks like Kana spontaneously jumps off the back of the bike). Kana gets up and looks back but there is no sign of Teketeke. Then she rushes to Utsumi's side and he lays on the ground and grabs his leg while expressing that he is in pain. The next scene we see both of them in a hospital room with a lady that I guess might be his mother. Utsumi's leg is in a cast and Kana apologetically comments that he won't be able to play in the next tournament. Utsumi, looking on the bright side replies, "I'll be able to rest now." Utsumi's mother offers Kana some of the fruit that she was cutting up for Utsumi but she declines and says that she needs to go. She goes to a library and looks up a book about local Urban Legends and finds a chapter on Teketeke. As she is reading, her cousin Rie happens to walk by and playfully yanks book out of her hands and asks if Kana is interested in ghosts. Kana takes the book back and grumbles that she isn't. After a pause Rie asks if Kana is researching the legend of Teketeke too. Surprised, Kana asks the same of Rie, who says no and walks away. Kana chases after her and accidentally makes Rie spill the papers she was carrying. Later we see them outside and Kana is commenting that she didn't know that Rie teaches cultural anthropology, as Kana says all Rie ever seems to talk to her about is boys. Rie asks why Kana is interested in Teketeke. Kana says that Rie wouldn't believe her. Rie says that she also... is investigating the current murders. Rie pulls out the research that she has been gathering for a paper she has been writing. It lists how Teketeke shows up on the train overpass at night looking for a target and if people look back they are killed. Even if the person... (blah blah, you get the idea by now). It goes on to say that there have been corpses found split in two, and that the local children attribute this to Teketeke. Kana asks if there has been cases of this happening before in the past. Rie confirms that there have been but they were all considered unsolved murders. Rie says that there is a story of a woman who died after WW2 in Kagogawa around the time the Teketeke legend started. One of Rie's professors got her an interview with the Kagogawa city historian and she is going to see him now. Kana confides in Rie that she saw Teketeke and according to the legend, she will be dead by tomorrow. Rie chuckles at this until she sees the serious look on Kana's face. Rie then takes Kana to her car and says that they had better hurry. Kana asks why and Rie indicates that she believes Kana. They drive all night with Kana texting her mother only to say that she is with Rie. When they get there they talk about a bet they made when they were younger about how to pronounce the name of a primitive man that Rie was studying for college, with the loser getting slapped in the face. Kana won and slapped Rie hard, and Rie said that if she had won she was planning to do it lightly. As they meet with the historian he shows them an old newspaper article about a woman named Kashima Reiko who committed suicide by jumping off of the overpass, with the result of her lower body being cut off. Kana writes down the location as Rie asks why the woman killed herself. The historian isn't sure, but mentioned that there was a rumor that the woman also showed erratic behavior leading up to her death. But he thinks it was all just rumors made up by kids who didn't understand what was going on. While talking, the historian chews out his assistant for failing to make a good cup of coffee. The assistant apologizes but when he sees what they are discussing he pauses as if he has something to say, but just leaves to fix the coffee. Kana asks if the historian knows where the woman lived. He replies that he does and will have his assistant show them the way, but he doesn't think there is a connection between this story and the current murders. Rie asks what erratic behaviors the woman showed was. The historian replies that she started throwing away any and all red objects she saw big or small, even furniture, though he doesn't know why. Next we see the assistant leading the girls around some houses and getting directions from a local woman. The woman points out the house they are looking for as well as saying that the daughter of the landlord of Kashima still lives there. She also mentions something about a training station that used to be nearby. The assistant takes them to the house and they meet with the daughter mentioned above. She says that every couple of years she has people come to ask her about Kashima. She says that Kashima was a beautiful nurse who died in 1948 when the landlord daughter was only about 6 years old. She confirms that Kashima threw away all red things by tossing them out the 2nd floor window. She asks is Kana and Rie know why she killed herself, and in a hushed tones says that an American soldier assaulted her out in the fields one day as she was returning home from work. Supposedly she was targeted for her beauty and that lots of men wanted her. Rie asks if she was raped and the daughter believes so. She also says that Kashima was supposedly still a virgin when it happened, so she would have bled. The daughter believes that this might be why she was why throwing away red objects, because she associated them with the trauma of being raped. The daughter's husband chimes in by saying that they really shouldn't believe what his wife is saying as he had grown up in the same area as her yet had never heard the story himself. He also says that there is no actual evidence of this happening and that their town is too far out into the countryside for an American serviceman to be stationed out there. His wife tells him that he should stay out of their conversation as he doesn't know what he is talking about. Next we see the girls dropping the assistant off back at the historian's office. Before he goes he comes back to the car and says that he thinks the legend of Teketeke might be real, and that it might have a connection to Kashima after all. He explains that there was a rumor when he was in middle school that a memorial was built for Kashima and that her little sister would visit it everyday. When the sister eventually passed away the memorial also happened to fall over and that it was around this time that the legend really started. He thinks that it might make a difference if they put the memorial back into place. As Rie is driving Kana inputs the location she wrote down from the newspaper article into the GPS. At first it can't find it but then it gives directions for them to follow. Kana comments that she doesn't think that a simple stone memorial would have an effect on what's happening, but Rie says that they should still try before it gets dark. Kana still isn't sure but Rie seems lost in thought. When Kana tries to snap her out of it Rie flips out and says that they have to try something or BOTH of them are going to die. Surprised, Kana asks what she means by "both" of them. Rie admits that she also saw Teketeke the same night the Kana did. She says that while doing her research she went to the overpass because she didn't believe the legend, but ended up seeing it. Kana asks Rie what time it was when she saw Teketeke, as Kana believes that it was just before 7 PM when she saw it. Rie says that she saw it right after Kana did. (This might explain why Teketeke suddenly disappeared when Kana crashed on Utsumi's bike, because Rie was now at the spot. Or perhaps that was Rie's voice Kana heard call out her name when she was on the bridge.) Rie says that they only have 2 hours left so they hurriedly follow the directions that the GPS gave them. Eventually they do end at an open field but there is no memorial and no sign of any train tracks. Rie calls the assistant and angrily tells him that the location in the newspaper must have been wrong. The assistant goes into the historian's office to review the maps but indicates that he doesn't have permission to be in the historian's office. Rie tells him to hurry up as now they only have an hour left. The assistant checks the maps and says that they should be in the right spot. He asks where they are and when Rie replies with the name, the assistant realizes that they are at Misaka-cho when they need to be at Mikasa-cho. Apparently when the professor said the name out loud before, Kana wrote it down incorrectly. The assistant says that they need to hurry and get to the right location as it is 8K away. The girls get stuck behind a slow moving truck while driving and eventually reach a fork in the road where their only options are clearly left or right. However, the GPS only says to continue going straight. Frustrated that they only have 30 minutes left, Rie smacks the screen with her hand and the GPS goes dark. Back on the phone with the assistant, he's about to tell them what the map says when a security guard comes in and asks what the assistant is doing there after hours. The assistant gives a weak reason and tries to leave. The guard stops him and when the assistant tries to push his way past the guard pins him to the ground, knocking the phone out of his hands. Rie and Kana try to get him back on the phone but he's not responding. In desperation Rie tells Kana to just pick a direction. After a second Kana picks left. Just as Rie is about to start going they hear the assistant (still pinned down by the guard) yelling at the phone for them to turn right. So Rie starts the car off in that direction instead. It's dark by the time they arrive at where the location of the memorial is supposed to be and start walking through the woods looking for it. (Wait, wasn't it supposed to be near train tracks?) Anyway, as they struggle to find it Rie laments that she picked Teketeke as the topic for her research paper, while Kana tells her to not give up. Rie replies that it sounds like Kana is the mature one between the two of them. Eventually Kana spots the memorial. Rie shines the flashlight on it and they see that it has indeed fallen over. As she looks to the right if it you see some sort of red squishy thing that has been cut in half next to the memorial that makes the girls cringe (honestly I couldn't tell what it was. It looked kind of like a rotten pomegranate). They check the writing on the stone and confirm that it is Kashima's. Then the camera switches to Teketeke's "predator vision" as the wind starts blowing and she rushes in the direction of the girls (of course she starts far enough away to give the girls time to fix the stone). Rie hears Teketeke coming and cries that it is too late but Kana tells her to hurry. The view switches back and forth between the girls struggling to lift the stone back into place and Teketeke closing in on them. Just as they get into Teketeke's line of sight the girls manage to get the memorial back into place. The wind and sound suddenly stops and Kana breathes a sigh of relief after Rie checks her watch to find that it is already past 8 PM. The camera goes back to Teketeke's vision, looking at the shrine for a second before darting back off into the woods. (But if the Ring and Grudge movies have taught us anything, it's that Japanese ghost women are bitter and don't care what nice things you do for them. They'll still come after you.) The moon is out and Kana and Rie are sitting in the car on a bridge discussing the bet they were talking about earlier, clearly relieved that they made it through their ordeal. As they share a bottle of water they freeze when they hear one of those familiar Teketeke scratches. The girls both look out the back of the car and see Teketeke slowly approaching them. Rie immediately speeds away in the car, but Teketeke is in pursuit, and closing in on them (that's some upper body strength to be able to catch up with a speeding car on just her hands). Rie cries out that she doesn't understand why they are still being chased. Kana realizes that Kashima was supposed to freak out at the color red. We see a flashback that the woman at the beginning of the film had a red key chain on her purse and Ayaka's bag was red. Kana shouts out that the people who were killed all had the color red next to them. Rie shouts out that her whole car is painted red! Kana pulls on the parking brake and the car skids to a stop but not before sliding sideways with Kana's side facing the oncoming Teketeke. You hear the scratching getting closer and closer and then something slams into the side of the car. The girls rush out the other side and you can see a huge dent on the side where Teketeke hit it but she isn't there. The girls run off into the woods as Kana yells at Rie to get rid of anything the color red that she has on her. You see Rie pulling off her sweater and then Teketeke's vision showing she is right behind them. Somehow Kana and Rie get separated. Kana turns around and starts calling out to Rie but hears the scratching sound coming closer. Slowly Teketeke creeps around a bush and stares at Kana. Kana backs away in fear and Teketeke continues to watch her. Suddenly Kana's cell phone starts to ring. She pulls it out of her pocket and realizes that her phone and the key chain attached to it are both red. Teketeke sees the phone and starts rushing at Kana. Kana screams and throws the phone away. Then a sudden gust of wind hits but Teketeke is gone. Kana looks around and wonders if she is now safe. We see that the sun is starting to rise as Kana starts backtracking through the woods. Rie appears calling out for Kana. Kana replies that she is safe and Rie tells her to wait where she is until Rie can get to her. Kana smiles as she sees Rie approach, but as she works her way past a low hanging tree Rie scrapes her forehead on a branch, and stumbles into the clearing with her hand over her face. Kana's smile fades as Rie removes Her hand to show a thin line of blood trickling down her forehead. A sudden gust of wind hits and we see Kana's eyes start to track something coming from the side as the scratching sound comes back louder than ever. Teketeke flies by Rie and as she does so, we see Rie's upper torso completely lift off of her hips and fly off in the direction Teketeke was going. Kana stares in horror as Rie's lower half falls forward onto the ground. Kana screams as we see Teketeke standing(?) next to the carnage, kind of like a dog who has been caught doing something it knows it's not supposed to do. The Teketeke starts running again. In the final scene, some time after the events that happened in the rest of the movie. A group of kids are walking down the street during the day. They pass by what used to be Kana's house as one of them says that the person who lived there has moved. Another kid says that the person died. But another kids asks, "Isn't she in the hospital?" When asked why, another kid says that she was throwing away red things. One of the kids ask why she was doing that, and the other kid who said she was in the hospital tells him, "She was throwing away red things" as she playfully pulls his red hat over his eyes. The kids walk off camera as they ask why she was doing that, but the group isn't sure. We then hear that scratching sound again as Teketeke races across the bottom for the screen in the direction of the kids.
