The first night of the 2022 Creative Arts Emmy Awards is taking place on Saturday, Sept. 3, and we’ll see where the Primetime ceremony could be heading based on the first wave of winners.
With an evening that features categories for animated program, reality host, documentaries and short form, we could get a strong sense of where some of the support lies for the main ceremony on Monday, Sept. 12.
There are significant history-making moments that can take place.
Barack Obama could become the second U.S. president to win an Emmy for outstanding narrator for Netflix’s “Our Great National Parks.” Dwight Eisenhower won in 1956, while still in office when he picked up the Governors Award “for his use and encouragement of television.”
If Obama wins, he’ll be halfway to Egot status after netting two Grammys for best spoken word album for “Dreams from My Father” (2006) and “The Audacity of...

“Queer Eye” is the front-runner to win Best Structured Reality Program at the Creative Arts Emmys this weekend, according to the combined predictions of over a thousand Gold Derby users. That would be no surprise since the show has won for the last four years in a row, but it would be historic. No reality program, structured or unstructured, has won five, so “Queer Eye” would be setting a new record. Check out our complete Creative Arts racetrack odds here.
Not counting competition programs, where “The Amazing Race” holds the record with its massive 10 wins, the lifestyle makeover show “Queer Eye” and the entrepreneurial “Shark Tank” are tied for the lead with four victories apiece. Those two shows account for every single Emmy won thus far in the Best Structured Reality Program race. That category was established in 2014 to differentiate shows that “contain consistent story elements that mostly adhere to...

In the wake of Warner Bros. Discovery’s merger, HBO Max has removed a host of titles, including many that it produced and owns outright, prompting a single question — why?
Earlier this week, HBO Max thinned its library of available titles with the removal of 20 originals and an additional 16 movies. Some of the impacted titles were the one-season cult queer series “Genera+ion,” and animated shows like “Infinity Train” and “Summer Camp Island.” The streamer also announced that select “Sesame Street” specials would be cut, which turned out to be around 200 episodes of the iconic children’s show.
The answer is both simple and complex. Company insiders told CNBC that the dropped shows were not frequently watched but that their removal is expected to produce “tens of millions” of dollars in savings as Warner Bros. Discovery seeks to trim about 3 billion to pay down post-merger debt that has ballooned to more than 50 billion,...

Joanna Gaines is reflecting on her 17-year-old son, Drake, leaving for college. The 44-year-old host of "Fixer Upper" published an essay in Magnolia Journal on Aug. 12, and in it, she wrote about her marriage to husband Chip Gaines as well as the major milestone that is her son leaving home.
"Soon, our oldest son, Drake, will be leaving home for college," she wrote in the essay called "A Note From Jo on Fortitude." "In the grand scheme of heartbreaking things, this one comes with a lot of gratitude and excitement. But still, my first child is moving away, and our family dynamic will change because of it, and that can feel like a loss of its own."
Drake is the oldest of the Gaines's five children. The couple also share Ella, 15; Duke, 14; Emmie Kay, 12; and Crew, 4. In reflecting on her eldest's new chapter, Gaines noted that there might be hard...

Magnolia Network opened its doors on Jan. 5 to an audience of about 3 million viewers, powered by the linear launch of “Fixer Upper: Welcome Home,” the renovation series hosted by Magnolia chiefs Chip and Joanna Gaines.
Magnolia Network’s first night of primetime programming garnered about 3 million viewers in Nielsen’s L3 ratings. The lifestyle and how-to channel marks the return to TV for the Gaines, who have partnered with Discovery in the streaming and linear launch of the curated Magnolia Network as a streaming label on Discovery Plus and the linear channel as a rebrand of Discovery’s erstwhile DIY channel.
The linear debut of “Fixer Upper: Welcome Home” on Jan. 5 brought in about 1.7 million viewers, a strong showing for an unscripted series. The series marks the return to episodic TV for the Gaines, who run a home renovation and retail empire from their home in Waco, Texas. The pair...

The launch plan was turned inside out, which, as it turned out, was meant to be.
Former HGTV stars Chip and Joanna Gaines made their long-awaited return to cable TV this month with the rebrand of Discovery’s DIY channel under the banner of the Gaines’ Magnolia home and lifestyle brand. A linear cable channel launch is a rare occurrence these days, but Chip and Jo, as the couple are known to their 20 million-plus social followers, have sway with the upscale demographics that still shell out for big pay TV bundles.
But the pandemonium of the pandemic disrupted the best-laid plans. The decision to switch up the timing of the launches came down to simple math, according to Magnolia Networks president Allison Page, an HGTV and Food Network alum. Magnolia didn’t have enough fresh episodes in the can to fuel a 24/7 linear lifestyle channel. Contrary to popular wisdom, old-fashioned...

Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines have joined forces with Discovery for the linear launch of the Magnolia Network, which is replacing the DIY Network on January 5, 2022 at 9 Pm Est. The launch kicks off with Fixer Upper: Welcome Home, the first show in a slate of original series planned to air on the network. Other series scheduled include Magnolia Table with Joanna Gaines, Restoration Road with Clint Harp, Home Work, The Lost Kitchen, Family Dinner, The Johnnyswim Show, Super Dad, and the entire five-season Fixer Upper library. Existing DIY Network fan-favorites will also join the Magnolia roster, including new seasons of Maine Cabin Masters, Barnwood Builders, Restoring Galveston, and Bargain Mansions. Magnolia initially launched earlier this year on the Discovery Plus streaming platform and dedicated Magnolia app. The service featured more than 150 hours of unscripted programming related to home, design, and gardening. However, the plan was always to expand into a linear cable network.

Magnolia Network, Discovery’s joint venture with Chip and Joanna Gaines, will light up as a linear pay-tv network on January 5, 2022.
The channel’s debut — a rare event in an era of streaming fixation and a shrinking pay-tv bundle, will come in the form of a rebrand of Discovery’s existing DIY Network. The first show to air on Magnolia will be Fixer Upper: Welcome Home, which returns the Gaineses to the hosting role that helped make them stars of TV and branded merchandise.
The launch is among Discovery’s many significant moves in 2021. At the start of the year, the company launched direct-to-consumer streaming service Discovery+, which includes select Magnolia programming. The company has also entered into an agreement to combine with WarnerMedia in a new entity to be spun out from AT&T. The companies expect regulatory approval of the transaction by mid-2022.

As media companies throw more of their firepower into new streaming-video behemoths, some of them still maintain a fondness for good ol’ TV networks.
Discovery and home-renovation gurus Chip and Joanna Gaines are moving ahead with the planned launch of their Magnolia Network, which will replace cable’s DIY on January 5, 2022 at 9 p.m. eastern. The outlet’s first offering will be “Fixer Upper: Welcome Home.”
Magnolia launched earlier this year on the Discovery Plus streaming service and a separate, dedicated Magnolia app, with more than 150 hours of unscripted programming devoted to home, design and gardening, among other household topics. But a linear cable network remains key to the endeavor, which aims to take the Gaines — best known for their “Fixer Upper” series on HGTV — and put them at the center of a home-arts programming universe in much the same way others tried to do with Martha Stewart and other domestic-arts gurus.

Chip and Joanna Gaines have explained several times at this point why they walked away from the original “Fixer Upper,” which at the time was HGTV’s favorite show. Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Network app (finally) revealed a launch plan on Thursday, when we found out the digital offering will precede the January 2022 DIY Network rebranding on linear cable. Additionally, we learned that the Magnolia app, which you can download this summer, will be a free add-on to the paid Discovery+ streaming service.
Previously, the concept appeared to include an option for consumers to pay for Magnolia programming in a standalone manner. Magnolia Network president Allison Page told TheWrap the plan experienced an “evolution to free,” and not so much a “shift.”
“A direct-to-consumer offering was something we envisioned from the beginning, we just thought we were going to start with linear and then move to the app. It was not determined that it would be paid, we kind of stayed open to all options as we went along. Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia app is set to launch on July 15, 2021, it was announced Thursday. On cable, Discovery’s DIY Network will rebrand as the Magnolia Network in January 2022.
The Magnolia app will be a free add-on for Discovery+ subscribers. That wasn’t always the plan — or at least, it was not always the extent of the plan. Originally, the partnership between Discovery, Inc. and the Gaineses was going to result in the linear cable channel (DIY), a TV Everywhere app and a standalone Magnolia SVOD service. However, the creation and recent launch of the all-encompassing Discovery+ streaming service changed the plans for that final piece.
In addition to episodic entertainment content, the Magnolia app will also include workshops, recipes and have a retail shopping platform, among other functionalities. So there will still be plenty of opportunities for monetization.

It’s a sign of the times — Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia joint venture with Discovery will make its debut on digital ahead of its linear launch.
Originally, Magnolia Network was supposed to take over Discovery’s DIY Network on Oct. 4 2020 after a rebrand, followed by a launch of a direct-to-consumer product at a later date.
