- When Mac and the team are unable to prevent Department of Defense intel from falling into Codex's hands, Mac must scale a vertical cliff using only gear he can cobble together himself to prevent the info's transmission
- Mac, Desi, and Riley pursue a lead on Codex when it steals a Department of Defense hard drive with encrypted information on U.S. troop deployments. To stop the transmission of the information, Mac has to scale a sheer wall, while Desi and Riley steal the hard drive before the Codex can send the information to a secondary location.—Gislef
- Desi is pounding on the window of a sealed door, calling to Mac. Mac runs up as the biohazard alarm goes off. Desi tells him that it's getting difficult to breathe, and he confirms that the pressure is dropping in the chamber. Mac works on the door lock with his Swiss knife but can't get it open and pounds at it in frustration. Desi tells him not to blame himself, and Mag goes to get something despite her begging him not to leave her.
In the war room, Matty tells Russ that Mac and Desi are still off comms.
Mac returns with a car battery, takes out the cathodes, uses a jumper cable, and makes a cutting torch. he cuts through the lock and gets the door open just as Desi's air runs out.
As the Phoenix jet heads back to LA, Mac looks pensively out the window as Riley looks on. Desi interrupts him with a drink, and assures Mac that she's okay. Matty calls and tells them that the DoD sent them a priority request. Jace Olson is a courier for the DoD, and Pfc Marcus Gonzalez was assigned to protect him. Thirty minutes ago they were driving through Kazakhstan back country, covertly transporting an encrypted hard drive containing the secret deployments of several U.S. bases.
The emergency beacon from their vehicle has gone off, and U.S. American enemies can't get hold of it because it will endanger American soldiers. The team is going on as disavowable assets. The agents agree, and Matty warns them that they will be shot down as they're entering the country without permission. They need to land near the border and make their way in on foot.
The trio land and prepare to walk the 30 miles in by foot. Wilt directs them to a nearby goat farm, and the trio go there looking for farm equipment. The owners aren't there but there are train tracks nearby, but haven't been used in 40 years. Desi goes to scout ahead while Mac builds a train, despite his objections. When Desi prepares to ride off on the only abandoned horse, Mac tells her to be careful because he already almost lost her once. Desi assures him that she'll be fine and rides off.
As Riley finds some old equipment in the barn, Wilt picks up via satellite that there's a truck convoy heading to Olson's last known location. They can't warn Desi because the convoy might pick up the signal even if they can't decrypt it, and Matty has Wilt cut the comms. Desi is riding toward the convoy, and they have no way to reach her.
Mac makes a rail-riding car out of a wheat sifter and some alcohol, He and Riley head down the tracks.
Wilt, Russ, and Matty track the rail car. Russ confirms that the vehicles aren't heading from any of the country's military bases, and figures someone else has the resources to launch a covert military operation in a remote area.
They approach Desi's GPS location, and Mac tells Riley that they have to jump. They do, and Mac admits that he was in too big a hurry to get to Desi to build brakes. They find Desi's horse but no sign of Desi. Mac blames himself for not talking Desi out of going, and Riley tells him that there's no reason to worry yet. They find Gonzales' body nearby, and hear Olson nearby, moaning in pain.
Mac and Riley go over, and see a man beating Olson and demanding the drive's location, while another mercenary looks on. Desi sneaks up and take out the watching mercenary from behind, and the first mercenary notices and draws his gun. Mac runs over and punches the man unconscious, and Desi kicks the man.
the agents tell Olson that they're there to rescue him, free his hands, and introduces themselves. Olson tells them that the mercenaries forced them off the road, and he hid the drive in a secret compartment so they couldn't find it. Olson takes them to the wrecked courier car, and Mac confirms the crash bent the steering column so the compartment is sealed shut. The car is leaking gas, and Mac gets a jack and jumper cables out of the trunk to make a jack screw. He bends the column out of the way and gets the drive.
Riley spots the convoy approaching them, and Olson tells Mac that they can't destroy the drive because the data wasn't backed up. Mac orders Riley and Desi to get Olson to safety, and he gets a flare from the car and confronts the mercenaries in the convoy. Their leader, Conor, comes over and demands the drive. Mac immediately hands it over and Conor sends his men to find the others.
Mac lights the flare and tosses it on the ground near the leaking gas. He takes cover as the car blows up, and the explosion knocks the mercenaries down. Conor recovers and grabs the gun, shooting at Mac, then returns to the trucks and leaves with his men.
A frustrated Mac watches them go, goes back on comms, and tells Matty and the others what happened. Wilt tracks the trucks, and back at the truck of the mercenaries who were questioning Olson, the trio find a high-speed decrypter. Mac figures that it could have been used to decrypt the drive. Riley figures they'll need a signal relay to transmit the data, and Wilt locates that there's one relay tower in the area... and it's atop a ride.
The trio go to the ridge and Matty finds a road but it's inaccessible from the agents' location. Mac rigs up a harness from jumper cables and straps from the truck, and pitons from the metal parts. He tells the others that there's only enough material to make one harness.
Mac heads up the cliff face, while Desi uses binoculars to direct him to handholds. Riley heads Olson to the border, and Wilt discovers the mercenaries went to an abandoned cannery factory four miles away. Riley and Desi head there to get the drive and keep the mercenaries from transmitting the data by an alternative method once they discover that Mac has taken out the relay tower. Desi tells Mac that they need him to stop the transmission, and he reluctantly agrees.
As Riley and Desi drive to the cannery, Riley points out that Mac is concerned about Desi. and Riley points out that Mac couldn't protect his father, aunt, or Jack. Now, to protect the people he has left, Mac insists on putting himself in danger instead... and that could get him killed.
Mac finds a mine shaft halfway up the cliff and pulls himself in. He figures it leads up to the tower, and Wilt brings up the schematics and confirms that it leads to the tower. The only way up is a vertical shaft, and there's a control room for the tower halfway up.
Riley and Desi break into the cannery, and spots the mercenaries. Desi figures that they're outnumbered, and Riley hacks their comms. She discovers that they have Codex coding, and Mac listening in says that Desi and Riley shouldn't underestimate them. Russ confirms from voice analysis that Mac is panicking, and Wilt talks to Mac and tries to reassure him. Matty and Russ talk privately, and Matty points out that the attack doesn't fit Codex's previous agenda. Russ suggests that their agenda has changed, and figures that they're missing something.
Desi and Riley go inside and spot the encryption equipment, and see a tech copying the data from the drive to the Codex mainframe. The two women move in to get the drive.
Mac continues climbing, and discovers that he has to switch to the other side of the shaft. He can't reach the other side.
Desi takes out the mercenaries guarding the encryption equipment, and one of them fires a shot into the air before he goes down. Mac hears it over the comms and figures his teammates are in trouble, and almost loses his grip. Meanwhile, Riley gets the drive and the two women leave.
Mac spots another foothold and tries to reach it, but he's out of cable and will have to free climb.
Conor and the rest of his men investigate the shot. They spot Desi and open fire, and the agents take cover and Desi returns fire. The men are between the women and the exit, but Desi points out that they didn't see Riley. She suggests that Mac will get her out of it, tells Riley to go, and surrenders. They take her away, then tie and hood her and take her to their leader, Finch. Finch assures her that he broke another man, and that he knows who she is. He says that it's being worked out how Codex is coming back together, and asks where Mac is. Finch doesn't like having Mac as a loose end, and Desi tells him that they split up and she doesn't know where Mac is.
Desi says that Finch will kill her, and Finch tells her that they'll just use truth drugs on her. He prepares a syringe and points out that he killed the last two men he used the drugs on. Riley is watching from a platform, and asks the group in the war room if they can give her an assist. Wilt tells her that there's no support teams nearby, and Riley refuses to interrupt Mac's focus and loop him in via the comms.
Mac begins losing his cool and tells Wilt that he needs to faster. Wil tells him to slow down, and Mac refuses, almost losing his grip. His friend asks Mac to talk to him, and tell him why he can't slow down. Mac says that he can't lose his teammates, and Wilt tells him that he can't help Riley and Desi if he can't help him. He says that Mac should find something to hold onto for himself, and Mac tells Wilt to keep talking.
Finch prepares to give Desi the injection, and he checks her pulse and discovers that her confidence is real. He works out that she knows they're transmitting the data, and she knows Mac is going to stop them by destroying the tower. He has Conor send a team to the tower, and takes out a gun and prepares to shoot her.
Riley finds a crowbar and knocks out a guard by dropping a winch on his head. She gets an idea and works out that she can "program" the overhead gears and levers with if/then code to get them do what she wants.
At the tower, the merc team arrives and fires down the shaft. He gets to the control room, finds the circuit board, and stops the upload. Mac refuses to leave, saying that if they trace the signal they find Codex's new base of operations.
Conor tells Finch that Mac jammed the upload. Finch takes Desi with him to use as a bargaining chip to get Mac to surrender.
Wilt checks the IP address of the fake information Mac uploads, and Russ drives there along with Wilt. Matty tells Mac that he needs to focus on escaping. The mercenaries continue firing down the shaft,
Riley swings a suspended barrel into Conor and his men. She slam two barrels full of salt together, runs over, and frees Desi. Finch shoots at them, and the women leap out a window, and steal a jeep. Mac confirms via the comms that they're safe and prepares to go through the water pipes. Matty warns him that nobody has accessed the piped in 30 years, and Mac slides down the pipe using a metal panel.
Desi and Riley drive to the spot where the schematic indicate the water pipe ends. He emerges from a nearby outlet pipe, and Desi and Riley help into the jeep. They drive off and fly back to LA.
A TAC team moves in on where the upload was going, assuming that Leland is there. They find Leland's burned corpse.
Mac goes to James' grave and admits that he doesn't come there much. Desi finds Mac and says that she understands why Mac doesn't come there much, because it reminds him of who he's lost. She tells him that people like them have to remember the wins, and says that they can't save each other so they have to save each other. Desi insists that Mac stay and get "cozy" with something he doesn't deal with much, and she'll be there with him.
Desi has brought snacks and hands them out, and tells Mac that they're going to be there a while. She has a hoagie like James liked, and gives it to Mac. Mac tells Desi that she's surprisingly sensitive, and she says the same about Mac but jokingly refuses to say that he's tough.
That night at Phoenix, Matty tells Russ that with Leland dead, they're no closed to finding Codex. Russ points out that Leland was shot in the head by a sniper, and he figures that someone was trying to send a message. The lab has found out that Leland was dead for 24 hours, and Matty suggests that the order to capture Olson didn't come from Leland. Russ figures that someone else is trying to put together Codex and there's a power struggle going on.
