Pretty Poor Mystery
csdcsdcsd200330 August 2023
"Mystery Party" is a colorful French film a la "Clue" and locked room games about a pill-popping woman who visits a remote garish mansion to discuss structural renovations but gets tangled up in murder and romance - no party as the title implies. Voices come out of nowhere; cell phones don't work; there are long-standing family feuds. Certain elements of the plot left me puzzled: the main character claims to have claustrophobia but builds a tent she enters without having a panic attack. Also, she throws pills into a fish pond (I guess to see if the pills were poisonous). Because the script mentions Agatha Christie, several of her plots came to mind, making me wonder if the dead man was really dead and also if the youngster of the family had something to do with that death. There is long nerve wracking action involving bows and arrows. I wanted to like this movie but in the end, I just couldn't and don't recommend it, pretty as it looked, colorful as it was. MAIS NON!

Reckless depiction of disregard for the life beautiful Koi fish

Warning: Spoilers
I was actually enjoying this rather off beat and wacky, original and fun movie until a scene in which the main character Jeanne throws a large amount of her medications into the Daguerre Mansion's beautiful fish pond. These elegant, harmless, graceful creatures are then depicted floating dead. Was the audience supposed to find this funny? I really thought we had reached a stage where animal wellbeing was considered in movie making and science proving that fish are sentient beings with a higher intelligence than once conveniently thought. This scene seems pointless, callous and my interest in the movie and the protagonist hit a sharp decline from thereon. It seemed to capture the arrogance and ignorance of our species when it comes to the treatment and regard of animal life. Leaves me wondering if anyone else felt this way or the writers thought the depiction of wanton disregard for innocent creatures would amuse the audience.

A fun romp with twists and turns

I have never written an IMDB review before, but the current reviews are polarised. Of the two so far, one person gave a bad review for fish cruelty, so I felt I should show some support for this film.

The film is beautifully shot, full of fun performances, and full of fantastic set-design. The colours are vivid, the pace is fast, and the plot strange and surprising. As well as paying homage to Cluedo (or presumably the French equivalent) it also makes some obvious nods to Agatha Christie and Wes Anderson. This film is fun, inventive, and very memorable. A wholly enjoyable cinema experience.

Bien.

Jeanne, played by the excellent Alice Pol, is invited to submit a design for an unusual project at the mansion of a games empire mogul. The project is indeed unusual.

While not as slick as Ready or Not, Murder Party is 100 minutes of gentle fun, worth your time. Colourful in the literal sense, the set is pleasing on the eye, the acting is competent and the writing similar.

French cinema comedy is displayed quite nicely in Murder Party. Merci beaucoup.
