informative documentary about the history of the Swedish royal dynasty
dromasca24 July 2009
I have seen this documentary on the European cultural TV station ARTE, and it was interesting especially as I am just preparing for a trip to Stockholm. It does quite a good job in presenting the origins of the Swedish dynasty which are quite unusual and different from the other royal houses. The first king of the dynasty was a French revolutionary at origin and a general of Napoleon, called by the Swedes to become a king when their dynastic line was cut off at the beginning of the 19th century. The character and actions of this first king are presented quite in details and so is the family and role of the current king of Sweden, who reigns over a country who was and is neutral, democratic and prosperous since the times of the first king, and an example for many other nations of the globe. I would have gave up the use of actors when talking about the historical figures, this fits badly in a serious historical and political documentary. I rather prefer to see documents, or drawings, or even being read comments of the times, but using actors seems to be a fashion that I need to live with in documentary films of this kind. Without too many spectacular documents or explanations, the film succeeds to be informative and interesting.
