Last spring, in the early days of Broadway’s Covid-19 pandemic shutdown, news reports and industry chatter referred to an eventual reopening as if a light switch would be flipped and the marquees of all 41 theaters would light up the Midtown night. Actors had left their dressing rooms full of the usual personal stuff — street clothes, photos, charms — as if they’d soon be back from a long holiday weekend.
The optimism was short lived, as the shutdown was extended time and again — April, June, September, January, June again. News got grim, and then more grim. The National Endowment for the Arts recently released figures indicating that while the overall unemployment rate has averaged 8.5 percent, the average among actors was 52 percent.
But the arrival of two Covid-19 vaccines this fall has reignited at least some of that optimism, with Broadway insiders now expressing confidence that at...

The John Gore Organization, a major Tony Award-winning production company and owner of Broadway.com and The Broadway Channel, has permanently laid off what sources say is more than 100 previously furloughed employees.
Lauren Reid, Chief Operating Officer of John Gore Organization, confirmed layoffs but did not provide numbers or details about which departments were hit. “It is with a heavy heart that we have laid off a number of previously furloughed employees,” Reid said in a statement. “We very much look forward to the day when theaters re-open and audiences and staffers can return.”
The layoffs come five months into the Broadway Covid-19 shutdown that has taken a massive toll on both the industry and the theater-related economy of New York City. According to the Broadway League, the shutdown has had a direct impact on nearly 97,000 jobs supported by Broadway, and the industry typically contributes about $575 million in tax revenue.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway smash hit Hamilton is now on Disney Plus in the form of a theatrically-filmed recording of the production, which dramatizes the life and death of U.S. founding father Alexander Hamilton.
Beloved by critics and audiences around the world, and without a doubt one of the most successful plays ever, Hamilton tells its little known yet historically-impactful story with tons of originality and flair, boasting exceptional music, acting and production. Thanks to its incorporation of hip-hop and more modern dance styles, there’s a tremendous amount of energy coursing through the play and its an energy that rarely lets up.
In fact, according to star Lin-Manuel Miranda, if Hamilton had been written as a traditional play, it would’ve taken significantly longer to tell its story.

Gerard Canonico has had a very successful theater career. He has appeared in plays both on and off Broadway musicals. Some of his best known appearances have been in Les Misérables and American Idiot. Outside of his work, Canonico has been mostly quiet throughout his career – until now. He recently accused former Glee star, Lea Michele, of being a ‘nightmare’ after another Glee cast member, Samantha Marie Ware, accused Michele of being a bully. Lea Michele is under fire following accusations made on Twitter by her former “Glee” co-star Samantha Ware, who said Michele made her life a “living hell,” while working on the show.
In the midst of the controversy, many of Michele’s former colleagues from various productions have backed up the sentiment expressed by Ware, establishing a pattern of her apparent on-set behavior.
Ware came forward with her claims when Michele tweeted about George Floyd with the Black Lives Matter hashtag. Ware wrote, “Remember when you made my first television gig a living hell?!?! Cause I’ll never forget. I believe you told everyone that if you had the opportunity you would ‘s— in my wig!’ amongst other traumatic microaggressions that made me question a career in Hollywood.”

Exclusive: A Star Trek: Voyager reunion broke the Stars In The House single-episode fundraising record, drawing donations totaling $19,225 for The Actors Fund’s efforts to assist entertainment professionals in need during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The previous Stars In The House record was set by a Glee reunion episode that raised $13,910. Watch the Voyager reunion episode below.
“It came as no surprise that the Trekkies showed up in full force to see the reunion,” said Stars hosts-creators Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley, “but we didn’t know their generosity would be so great as to break the single-episode fundraising record. Of course, it makes sense because the Star Trek franchise has always been about inclusivity and kindness and we should have known that the values of the show are shared by Trekkies everywhere.”
The hosts said they’re already planning for additional Star Trek-themed episodes in the coming weeks.

Musical TV shows have always needed ubertalented casts, and the new comedy Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist is no exception. Are the actors actually singing on screen? For the moment, it looks like yes, the main cast are doing all of their own singing rather than relying on postproduction dubbing by professional singers. Of course, it helps to have some veteran song-and-dance actors in the cast, too.
The show's premise explains its need for musical talents: our heroine Zoey (Jane Levy) suddenly develops the ability to hear the world's thoughts through song after an Mri gone wrong. Several of the show's lead cast members have experience singing, both in previous television work and on stage. Skylar Astin has perhaps the most extensive résumé, covering the trio of film, TV, and theater: he played college a cappella star Jesse in the Pitch Perfect movies, joined the cast of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend in its...

Brian Kite has been named interim dean of the UCLA School of Theater, Film & Television. He takes over on January 1 for Dean Teri Schwartz, who is stepping down at month’s end.
“Chancellor Block and I appreciate Brian’s willingness to serve as interim dean, and we have every confidence in his ability to provide strong leadership and continuity for the school,” said Emily Carter, UCLA’s Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost.
Kite currently serves as the special academic senior associate dean at the school and has been chair of the theater department since joining UCLA in 2015 as a professor. Exclusive: Word is getting around that British actor Nicholas Galitzine has won the role of Prince Robert in Sony’s upcoming Camila Cabello musical Cinderella.
After a long search, Galitzine, I hear, wowed the filmmakers in many chemistry readings. In addition to Cabello, the actor joins Idina Menzel and Billy Porter (as the fairy godmother) in the Kay Cannon-directed and scripted feature. James Corden produces and has a story by credit. A production start is scheduled for February for a Feb. 5, 2021 release.
Galitzine’s first big film break came at the age of 20 about five years ago when he scored a role opposite Luke Perry in John Williams’ The Beat Beneath My Feet which played the Berlinale in 2015. In that movie Galitzine played Tom, a teenage loner who discovers his rock god neighbor has faked his death over tax fraud and blackmails him into becoming his guitar teacher.

Exclusive Spring Awakening, the 2006 emotionally powerful, sexually frank and Tony-winning musical by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, has been staged around the world, and now for the first time is heading to China. Yes, the South Park-hating, frequently censoring and much in the news China.
Set for a limited 13-performance Shanghai engagement in January 2020, the staging will be directed and choreographed by Spencer Liff, who choreographed the acclaimed 2015 Broadway revival of Deaf West’s Spring Awakening that featured hearing and deaf actors and utilized both English and American Sign Language.
Now he’ll direct and choreograph a Spring Awakening with an entirely Chinese cast that will speak the dialogue in Chinese and sing the songs in English. The production will be performed at Theatre Above, a 600-seat venue in downtown Shanghai. A national tour will follow.

There’s a moment in the fourth of episode of Netflix’s Daybreak when a barely recognizable Krysta Rodriguez clutches an enormous bowl of maggots, assigns a name to each individual squirmer, then proceeds to devour them all with a sickening grin on her gross (sorry!) face.

Four film directors have announced or spoken about new projects at Cannes this week.
Spook's Apprentice
Russian helmer Sergei Bodrov is set to direct an adaptation of Joseph Delaney's children's book "Spook's Apprentice" for Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary Pictures and Thunder Road says Variety.
The story follows a 13-year-old boy who learns about wizardry from a forbidding old spook. Chuck Leavitt will rewrite Matt Greenberg's earlier draft.
Dracula 3D
Horror legend Dario Argento ("Suspiria") is planning a period-set 3D "Dracula" film to shoot in Italy next January says Film Shaft. Argento apparently plans to stay faithful to Bram Stoker’s classic novel.
Spring Awakening
McG ("Terminator Salvation") will apparently both direct and produce the film version of acclaimed Broadway musical "Spring Awakening" says Broadway World. McG is currently in Cannes seeking financing for the project.

The current bidding war over the rights to the "Terminator" franchise mean that the most recent director, McG has some time on his hands. Although the director has already signed on to direct the film adaptation of "Spring Awakening," his next film just might be the Fox comedy, "This Means War."
Reese Witherspoon and Bradley Cooper have already been cast in the comedy, which is expected to start shooting this spring.
This is how the MTV Movies Blog describes the film:
The plot sounds very "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," yet in "This Means War" the spies who turn on each other are best friends rather than husband and wife. It's that classic story of a woman coming between two guys and ruining their friendship.
With Reese Witherspoon and Bradley Cooper, I'd totally go see that. What do you think?

While Sony and Lionsgate fight a bidding war for the rights to the "Terminator" franchise, "Terminator Salvation" director McG is looking for his next movie in lieu of not going on to helm the series' fifth installment. Though he's still linked to the Broadway musical adaptation "Spring Awakening," according to Variety he has also been in talks to helm a "priority project" for Fox titled "This Means War."
The comedy already has two stars in place, Bradley Cooper and Reese Witherspoon. It is expected to begin shooting this spring, which would make it the director's next movie, rather than the musical. The screenplay for "This Means War" has reportedly been rewritten so many times that it's difficult to say who the author is anymore, but the most recent draft is by "Role Models" scribe Timothy Dowling (who interestingly enough acted in a "Terminator" movie -- the third one).

Satirical novel and psychological thriller American Psycho is being adapted into a musical with songs from Duncan Sheik and a book by “Big Love” writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, reports Variety.
Movies becoming musicals are more common than you might think. American Psycho will join the ranks of other transfers, including The Lion King, Legally Blonde, The Lord of the Rings (really), Billy Elliot, Young Frankenstein, Xanadu, The Little Mermaid, High Fidelity, The Wedding Singer, When Harry Met Sally, and the struggling stage version of Spider-Man. Just to name a few I found on the Internet and had no prior knowledge of until today…
Duncan Sheik though? Well, the same one hit wonder that sang “Barely Breathing” in 1998 has graduated to writing music for stage shows. He even won a Tony award for the music to Broadway’s “Spring Awakening,” which reportedly took him eight years to craft.

On Wednesday June 26th, 2006, my best friend and I walked into the Atlantic Theatre Company to see the, then, Off-Broadway show "Spring Awakening". The theater was small and there was an electric feeling in the air. We were familiar with the show's composer Duncan Shiek's music so we got the last 2 tickets available. What exploded from the stage that evening left us breathless. We chatted with Steven Sater during intermission and he said that they had just found out that the show was moving but they didn't know where. Well, where was to Broadway! And after a successful run and 8 Tony Awards (Including Best Musical), Spring Awakening hits Denver on December 1st.

Walt Disney Studios has halted production on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo, an expensive remake that was to be directed by McG (Terminator Salvation).
Following the Monday meeting, McG withdrew from the origin story to focus on other projects like Dead Spy Running and the musical Spring Awakening. He’s also loosely attached to Terminator 5, but the rights to the franchise are in a bidding war and the new owner may have different thoughts on the creative direction.
Variety reports the family adventure movie was the first casualty of a changing of the guards at the top of Disney’s executive branch. The new movie chief, Rich Ross, pulled the plug on what was the last approved project by the ousted Dick Cook even after the studio had spent $10 million to hire crews in preparation for a February 2010 shoot. The Jules Verne adaptation was budgeted at $150 million.

It may be tricky to locate anyone willing to admit they actually enjoyed the darn thing, but Terminator Salvation still managed to nab enough of the public coin that director McG is able to give consideration to a fifth instalment in the saga which made a superstar out of Ah-nuld Governator. And, in addition to mulling over where the adventures of John Connor and chums might next be headed, the Charlie’s Angels director is also toiling away on a fresh version of Jules Verne’s nineteenth century science fiction novel 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. Speaking to RadioFree, McG explained that;
“I’m prepping 20,000 Leagues every day, but I’m concurrently prepping Terminator 5 - you know, another Terminator picture. So we’re cooking that up. And then I’m very active in Spring Awakening also, the musical.”

Coming out of this summer, I'm not sure McG will be a director most people are excited to see more from, but he might be able to redeem himself. McG talked with both IGN and RadioFree recently and opened up about his plans for both Terminator 5 and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which are both in active development. "I'm prepping 20,000 Leagues every day, but I'm concurrently prepping Terminator 5--you know, another Terminator picture. So we're cooking that up. And then I'm very active in Spring Awakening also, the musical. So we'll see. But my focus right now is really pushing forward 20,000 Leagues." As far as I know (even though I liked Terminator Salvation), most people don't really care about the next Terminator sequel, since the last one wasn't really a highlight of the summer. But as a teaser to potentially get a few of you excited about what ...

Terminator Salvation has barely left the theatres and already McG has confirmed that he has begun work on Terminator 5, the second installment in the proposed trilogy.
I reviewed Terminator Salvation back in May, and despite the fact I only gave it 3 out of stars I believe I was one of the more positive critics upon the film’s release. The truth is that despite it’s faults I thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was - a sci-fi war movie thrown into the Terminator universe. Unfortunately others were less kind, and the film found itself being critically panned, fortunately, director McG seems to be made of stronger stuff and has taken it all in his stride.

In March it was announced that McG had signed on to develop and possibly direct Medieval, a spec script by Mike Finch & Alex Litvak sold for $800,000 against $1.6 million. But McG has too many other projects on his plate, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea: Captain Nemo at Disney, a big screen adaptation of the musical Spring Awakening for Warner Bros and possibly fifth Terminator film. So who is going to take over for McG? Super duper hack director Rob Cohen. You know, the guy who directed The Fast and the Furious, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Stealth and xXx. Speaking of xXx, this move also means that Cohen will not be reteaming with Vin Diesel on the previously announced sequel xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. Diesel is free to explore other options. At the upfronts yesterday, Fox announced the renewals and cancellations of current shows — Dollhouse, Fringe and Bones are getting another season, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is not (damnit!) — and presented their new ones.

McG: No. ItÂ.s the privilege of the public to put people in boxes.

Looks like Terminator Salvation director McG is going to be moving from post-apocalyptic robots to Broadway musicals for his next movie - a big-screen adaptation of the racy coming-of-age play Spring Awakening. He's currently in talks to direct and produce.Set in 19th-century Germany, the story revolves around "a group of teens discovering their sexuality and dealing with high-wire topics like masturbation, abortion, rape and suicide." McG's a decent fit for Awakening after getting his start directing music videos, but a decidedly non-mainstream rock musical is kind of an odd followup to a summer blockbuster, no?...

Filmmaker McG is in talks to direct and produce a big screen adaptation of the Broadway rock musical “Spring Awakening.”
The story of “Spring Awakening” is set in 19th-century Germany and follows a group of teens as they discover their sexuality and deal with sensitive topics like abortion, rape and suicide. Writer Steven Slater and rocker Duncan Sheik based the musical on an 1891 German play.
According to The Hollywood Reporter McG, who is wrapping up directing Terminator Salvation, fits well with the project. He got his start in the music business as a songwriter and video director and has maintained a finger on the teen pulse by producing shows like “The O.C.” and “Chuck”. Is there anything he can’t do?
