The WWF World Tag Team Titles were vacant because of how WWF World Heavyweight Champion Bob Backlund and Pedro Morales had defeated The Wild Samoans (Afa (Afa Anoai) and Sika (Sika Anoai)) (w/manager Captain Lou Albano) for the belts on August 9th, 1980, and were then stripped of them on the grounds that Backlund could not hold two titles at the same time. Here, The Wild Samoans defeated Tony Garea and Rene Goulet in the tournament final to become the first-ever 2-time WWF World Tag Team Champions.
WWF Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion Ken Patera (w/manager The Grand Wizard (Ernie Roth)) defeated Rick Stallone. After the match, he asked commentator Rick Stallone where the challengers were. This brought out the first-ever Triple Crown Champion (World, Intercontinental and World Tag) Pedro Morales, who said he would go after Patera. This led to a brawl, with Patera hitting Morales with the belt, with Tony Garea, Rene Goulet and Rick Martel making the save.
