The first series of Des O'Connor Tonight to be broadcast on ITV. As the programme lasted with ITV for 15 years, then had further specials after unofficially "ending" in 1999, it's often mistakenly remembered as an ITV-only show.
The series was popular with viewers, but regularly slated by critics for its light-weight, "harmless" atmosphere, and Des O'Connor's "soft" interview style, which meant no tough questions and plenty of laughing at his guest's jokes - the very things for which the public liked the programme.
This episode was slighted in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle as Des "amiably mugs his way through an hour's worth of Inconsequential never-mind."
