Cletus' big catch is lost when his fishing pole breaks. Grandpa says it must have been "Big Luke", a giant catfish that comes in the region once a year. Cletus keeps trying to court Gloria who says he fails to compare to her late father, an accomplished sportsman. Now he is determined to catch Big Luke to impress Gloria into going with him to the Founder's Day Dance. Grandpa is saddened, as he fought Big Luke so much over the years that he has grown to respect the fish and made his peace "to grow old together". Cletus comically keeps failing to land him, which only fuels his determination. Cletus and Big Luke square off for one last battle.
