Excellent!

If you enjoyed "Broadcast News" of many years ago, this show reminds me of it. And, that's a good thing! Torv and Reid have great chemistry and the other supporting actors are all enjoyable. I laughed out loud a couple of times but it also brings the drama. Only watched the first episode but am looking forward to the remaining ones. Check it out!

A rather engrossing debut episode.

The newsrooms of Australia in 1986, a very Male dominated era, one woman, Helen Norville, swims against the tide, pushing for more action, her colleague Dale Jennings is thrown straight into the action.

A thoroughly enjoyable first episode, it takes a couple of minutes for it to settle down, and give you an idea of the direction of moving in, but once it settles down, it's actually quite an addictive watch.

Initially I thought it was going to be a story of Helen's struggles, battling against being a woman in a man's world of work, and there is an element of it, but it's so much more, Dale is arguably the most interesting character here.

Sam Reid and Anna Torv are both excellent, I'm super keen to see how their relationship develops, and where the pair go from here.

A cracking first episode, 8/10.

Three, Two, One...

Broadcast News was a sharp perceptive comedy drama about American television news.

Australian drama The Newsreader ploughs the same furrow. There is nothing wrong with that as long as you do it well.

Dale (Sam Reid) is a bright young television reporter and producer who wants to be a news presenter. He just doesn't have the voice to read the news. Whereas Albert Brooks sweated profusely in Broadcast News. Dales has a squeaky voice and talks too fast.

Helen (Anna Torv) is an ambitious news presenter in a chauvinistic newsroom of the mid 1980s. She is tired of playing second fiddle to veteran news anchor Geoff Walters.

When Helen walks out of her job, circumstances sees her staying in Dale's apartment. The space shuttle Challenger disaster of January 1986 sees Helen grabbing a breaking news story as events unfurl in real time.

There was a good period feel to the first episode. Paul Hogan winning Australian of the Year and he is planning to make his first major movie. The Australian cricket team are having a bit of a disaster.

Obviously the moment Dale mentions about Helen doing a piece on the first American civilian, school teacher Christa McAuliffe going to space. You sensed where this was going.

It was an enjoyable first episode, a lot of cynicism and some humour.

It was also a time where the likes of Rupert Murdoch were having an impact on the Australian media landscape. Television news in Australia was changing and some of it was going to be exported abroad soon.

What a pleasant surprise, Anna Torv and Sam Reid have this beautiful energy that drives the show to a new level. I am really enjoying this concept, the story, everything. Simply amazing.
