A Necessary and Unpleasant Record
boblipton29 August 2018
A medium-large dog is strapped down and has 1,400 cubic centimeters of blood drawn. The doctor then replaces this with the same amount of his "Solution Citrate." The dog is fine.

By this time Painlevé was probably known for his science movies, as well as being the son of a mathematician and a former Prime Minister, so he probably struck the scientists making this experiment -- looking for a blood substitute -- as someone to record the test. Nonetheless, it was very unpleasant to watch the dog being mistreated by men who all had exquisitely maintained beards, on which, I have no doubt, they lavished enormous care.

Of all the films by this film maker, this seems the least human to me.

Dog at the doc

Warning: Spoilers
The over 85-year-old "Experimental Treatment of a Hemorrhage in a Dog" is one of the longest titles from French documentary movie pioneer, but in terms of the runtime it is among his shortest works. This one here only goes on for 4 minutes and shows us in a black-and-white silent film from Painlevé's early days as a filmmaker how a doc is treated by a veterinarian. The next day, he is in good health again. In terms of contents, this film is pretty different from Painlevé's usual approach. The focus is just on one particular animal and not on a whole species. Apart from being very short, like I mentioned earlier, it also shows us humans which is not too common for Painlevé. Clearly he was still experimenting a bit with his approach to (animal) film at this point. But it's not a very interesting watch, not more interesting than a random visit at the animal doc. I do not recommend checking it out.
