Chicago – Before the days of 24/7 internet access to every form of entertainment that exists, there were eras of radical performance expression that changed the landscape of attitudes toward everything – think of The Beatles evolving music and also changing social culture. The roots of another evolution, especially in comedy, began with a modest humor magazine that brought together the right mix of anarchists and misfits. What they did would influence comedy for years afterward, and their story is told in “Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead: The Story of National Lampoon,” directed by Douglas Tirola.
“National Lampoon” Magazine was a national publication founded in 1970, that was spawned from the Harvard Lampoon, and brought together a team of 1960s-influenced comic radicals that changed the way humor was conveyed. No sacred cows existed on their pages, and the magazine also broke out into signature comedy records, stage performances and radio shows. This cottage industry featured...

"The culture of drink endures because it offers so many rewards ... above all the elusive promise of friendship and love" -- Pete Hamill, A Drinking Life: A Memoir
The documentary Hey Bartender opens with this fitting introduction into the world of cocktails. The story introduces us to several characters in this lively and engaging film from director Douglas Tirola (All In: The Poker Movie). We are introduced first to Dunville's owner Steve Carpentieri, who is struggling to keep his small business alive in Westport, Connecticut. Cheap beer flows at this hole-in-the-wall where everyone does know your name, but fancy cocktails don't cross the bar here. Carpentieri ponders whether to throw in the towel after almost 20 years in the business.
On the other end of the spectrum is Steve Schneider, a young man trying to advance in the ranks at Employees Only (Eo), one of the most prestigious bars in New York City.

Here are the ten films to watch on VOD this May, in alphabetical order: "All In: The Poker Movie" (May 1) Hardcore poker players and anyone who enjoyed the Matt Damon-starring "Rounders," will no doubt want to seek out "All In: The Poker Movie," an entertaining look at how poker went on to come a nationally televised sport played and watched by millions. The film, directed by Douglas Tirola, takes aim at politicians -- through interviews with a slew of professional players and celebrities (including Damon, Kenny Rogers and "This American Life" host Ira Glass) -- who have managed to prevent millions from playing,...

In 2009, I attended the CineVegas Film Festival, where Doug Tirola’s documentary All In: The Poker Movie had its world premiere. While there, I briefly met the affable Tirola, and was pleased for him when, at the fest’s awards ceremony, the film was given the Best Documentary prize.
However, a distribution deal — which seemed likely given the fact that poker’s popularity was at an all-time high in 2009 — did not materialize, and it has taken three years for All In to arrive in theaters, now released by Tirola’s company, 4th Row Films.
When I saw All In on the theatrical release schedule a few months back, I did a double take. This documentary was made in 2009, but on April 15, 2011 — or “Black Friday,” as it’s widely referred to — the world of poker was upended when the three biggest online poker sites (PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and Absolute Poker...

You don’t need to be a poker fanatic like myself to enjoy the new documentary All In: The Poker Movie, which opens at New York’s Cinema Village today and is available on video on demand on April 24. But if you are a cards fiend, you’ll appreciate the all-star interviewees featured in director Douglas Tirola’s film, from poker greats such as Phil Hellmuth and Amarillo Slim to other players and icons like Matt Damon, Ira Glass, Kenny Rogers, historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, and Ingrid Weber, who worked as a manager at the Rounders-inspiring Mayfair Club and...

It is with great sadness that I report this isn’t Rounders II. Instead we’ve got the trailer for an upcoming documentary titled All In: The Poker Movie. I’ve never actually played a game of it in my life, but I’ve always been fascinated at the obsession and this film by Douglas Tirola seems to explore that. Featuring Matt Damon, along with top poker players, it premiered all the way back in 2009 at the CineVegas International Film Festival where it (shockingly!) won the top doc prize. It seems like a real-life version of The Grand, a film I was disappointed in. Let’s hope this one turns out better and one can check out the trailer below via Apple.

The story of seminal humor magazine National Lampoon will get the documentary treatment from producer Douglas Tirola and Susan Bedusa of 4th Row Films.
The duo behind the award-winning docs "All In: The Poker Movie" and "An Omar Broadway Film" have optioned the rights to the story of Lampoon as well as its archive for a feature film to be directed by Tirola.
The film will tell the story of National Lampoon from its beginnings as the Harvard Lampoon, through its days as a publishing sensation and Hollywood heavyweight, to its eventual downfall and into its rebirth and refocus as a multimedia company.
During its heyday in the 1970s, the magazine was responsible for launching comic and writing talents such as John Hughes while its stage and radio show gave a spotlight to actors such as John Belushi and Chevy Chase. Articles led to movies such as "National Lampoon's Vacation" and "National Lampoon's Animal House.
