Monty's travels through the United States, which focus on the four regions of Metropolitan New York City, the Chesapeake Bay area, the Kansas plains, and Metropolitan Los Angeles, take him to gardens that in general have a new world sensibility in different respects, and which try to capitalize on features cogent to the garden and the area, such as Hollywood gardens evoking glamour and fantasy of the movie business. A few of the things that Monty will be looking for is how America's sense of prosperity and optimism translates into the gardens, and how the decidedly American garden feature of the lawn is used, which some gardeners turn upside down on its head. In that respect, he also looks at the relationship between built form and the garden, the lawn usually the frame for both. In his journey, Monty further asks, especially for public spaces, when what may not look like a traditional garden should be called one especially in regard to its meaning to the community.
