Warning: Spoilers
Here we have another example of a filler episode that has very little redeeming qualities. The chair parts are good, but why is Rush's past so important that half of the episode needed to be dedicated to it? His past life on earth should have been very brief, 1 or 2 minutes at the most. I found the story of his past life to be very boring. Once again we're back on Earth watching someone's personal life while there's an ancient alien ship traveling through space. Rush is not a likeable character and showing his past life didn't change any of that. I think Rush's experience in the chair could have been done better. Perhaps an interaction with the Ancients who built the ship. Overall not a terrible episode, it was just ok.

Rush

Warning: Spoilers
OK, so there may have been some technical difficulties as the previous reviewer stated, and I wholeheartedly agree with him. I hate it when shows make blatant changes just to suit the current episode, BUT finding out why Dr. Rush is the way he is, was worth every mistake.

Now that I realize that a lot of what he is does is done in fear, guilt, and self loathing instead of just being a narcissistic jerk, I no longer hate him. Of course if he does nothing with his new sense of self that his wife helped him with in his dream state while she was on her death bed, well that will be a different story. I'm not expecting a change overnight, but gradual improvement would be nice to see.

Another thing that bothers me about this show is that it is always so dark (as in lighting). I understand that they are on ship and there is no sun, but seeing Rush at home, school and outside, was refreshing and shooting of his "conscience" dream as well as the acting was excellent.

Besides, any Stargate franchise episode with Dr. Daniel Jackson in it is worth many stars...but that's just my opinion...love that guy!

Great background to Dr Rush despite technical difficulties

I really liked this episode. In it, we see a glimpse from Rush's past through some clever 'technobabble' involving the chair and we get to meet his wife.

For me, Louise Lombard, made this episode shine. What a wonderful and beautiful actress she is.

Given what her character has to go through it was never maudlin or just for sentiment.

You also have to allow that this is Rush's dream, so it's from his point of view. He's only there to solve a problem and not deal with a reality he had lived through.

We see his wife struggle to deal with her situation and stay connected to a man she loves but is driven by his work. There were some lovely tender scenes that served to humanise Rush in a way that explains most of his current actions.

On the ship, the crisis there is of the ticking clock variety. While I agree they could have used the previous plot device of preventing the Gate from closing but that then becomes the standing joke. Remember Star Trek Voyager, when for a while they nearly lost a shuttle a week and they were just as stranded!

While I think there could have been a different resolution to the problem, it needs to be conceded that this adds considerably to the reality of the premise and the drama.

Makes no sense

Warning: Spoilers
This episode has few obvious flaws in it. Ship is about to jump while some folks are still trapped on a planet. And soldiers are moving rocks from collapsed tunnel to save em like on summer vacation. And than again, why even bother that time is running out, as ship is jumping in few moments? In one of previous episodes someone placed his hand in active gate and ship was unable to jump because of safety protocols that ancients wrote. So why even worry bout time when this could be easily done again. Makes no sense. Did the same script writers forget what they wrote on that previous episode ? Or the new writers did not do their homework. It's just insulting to the viewer.
