Malaga — Isaki Lacuesta’s “Saturn Return” (“Segundo Premio”), always a frontrunner, topped this week’s Malaga Festival winning its best picture, director (with co-director Pol Rodríguez) and editing (Javi Frutos) awards.
The triple plaudit delivers further recognition for a feature which pulls off the double achievement of being formally inventive and great fun at one and the same time.
Turning on Spanish indie rock group Los Planetas storied attempts to making their third and finally iconic album, but really about people’s need to recast the past as comprehensible narrative and a biopic parody, A broad audience play, “Saturn Return” has been hailed by Spanish newspaper El Mundo as a “masterpiece.”

Exclusive: Altitude Media Group has boarded a documentary shot entirely inside the Grand Theft Auto video game world.
Grand Theft Hamlet will follow the story of out-of-work theater actors Sam Crane and Mark Oosterveen, who had the idea to stage a full production of Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’ within Grand Theft Auto 5 during the dull days of the third Covid-19 lockdown in the UK three years ago.
Indie studio Altitude has taken worldwide rights after striking a deal for the “hilarious and profoundly moving” film, which Crane and Pinny Grylls wrote and directed. The doc gets its worldwide premiere at SXSW on Sunday (March 10) and will get a European premiere at Cph:dox.
“We are extremely proud and excited to be partnering with Pinny, Sam and the whole team on Grand Theft Hamlet and cannot wait for audiences to experience this singular and masterful piece of machinima filmmaking,” said Altitude Film Sales Managing Director Mike Runagall.

Radical was an emotional rollercoaster that resonated with me on a profound level. It can take you back to those days in school where you might have often felt like an outcast, misunderstood and underestimated by teachers who failed to see your potential. The film brilliantly captures the struggle of students in Matamoros, a town plagued by violence and poverty, where education seems like an unattainable luxury. Sergio Juarez, portrayed as the beacon of hope, mirrored that one teacher we all wish we had—the one who believes in you when no one else does. His unwavering faith in the students brought a breath of fresh air into a stifling environment, breaking the cycle of despair. The raw portrayal of resilience and spirit in the face of life’s challenges struck a chord within me. In a world full of hardship, Radical becomes a testament to the human spirit’s ability to overcome adversity.

This year, Sundance saw big deals go down for “A Real Pain”, “It’s What’s Inside”, “Presence” (Neon), and “My Old Ass” as well as smaller acquisitions for “Kneecap” (Sony Pictures Classics), “Ghostlight” (IFC Films), and “Ibelin”(Netflix).
It’s not the same bull market as the old days, but we’ll take it. And while streamers made their presence felt with the two largest acquisitions to date, it’s clear that for most of these films theatrical will be part of their lifecycles. But is that a smart move?
Based on last year’s results, the answer is: Could be. Domestic box office from all Sundance 2023 films was the best for any year since Covid. At around $100 million, it quadrupled the take from 2022 Festival titles (around $25 million). All told, about two thirds of the 2023 films have some sort of domestic distribution, including streaming outlets. Of these, about a dozen films have yet to open.

In Radical, Mexican superstar Eugenio Derbez plays Sergio, a teacher in a neglected Mexican school who deploys unorthodox pedagogical methods, throwing the typical curriculum out the window despite skepticism from administrators, corruption from local officials and the life-threatening obstacles faced by his young charges.
After winning the festival favorite award at Sundance a year ago, the film screened in theaters last fall, and now distributor Participant has released a special featurette, an interview with Derbez as well as the real-life teacher and star student behind the story, in conversation with Oscar-nominated actress Yalitza Aparicio – who earned her own teaching credentials just before landing her big break in Roma.

Year 2023 will be remembered in Hollywood for various phenomena — the strikes, Barbenheimer — but for Latinos, 2023 was the year that saw a relatively significant number of movies and TV releases from and about their community, in a variety of genres. With actors and writers spending about half of last year unable to promote their projects, the atmosphere at Neuehouse in Hollywood was all the more electric last Friday evening as a who’s who of Latin entertainment, media, sports and politics came together to toast the excellence they saw on the big and small screens.
The event, La Cena Los Angeles, was an expansion of the intimate multi-city La Cena dinner series started last year by culture and impact consultant Ruben Garcia, formerly co-head of cultural business strategy at CAA, to cultivate community among impactful Latino figures across disciplines.

321 films are in contention for this year’s Academy Awards, while 265 features are eligible in the best picture category, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday as it released its annual “reminder list” for members.
To be eligible in the general categories, films (meaning a runtime of more than 40 minutes) must open in a commercial theater in at least one of the following areas: Los Angeles County; the city of New York; the Bay Area; Chicago, Illinois; Miami, Florida; and Atlanta, Georgia, between Jan. 1, 2023 and Dec. 31, 2023. Additionally, it must complete a minimum qualifying run of seven consecutive days in the same venue.
To be eligible for the best picture category specifically, the movies must be eligible for the general entry and have “submitted a confidential Academy Representation and Inclusion Standards entry form.” Additionally, the film must meet two of the four standards required, in addition to the theatrical component.

New York-based The Film Sales Company has pounced on the worldwide rights to Colombian documentary feature “Igualada” by Juan Mejía Botero ahead of its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Documentary Competition sidebar.
Mejía Botero, whose most recent feature documentary “Death by a Thousand Cuts” won the Audience Award at Doc NYC, chronicles politician Francia Márquez’s groundbreaking journey from her start as a rural grassroot activist to her history-making campaign to become not only the first black but also the first female president of her native Colombia.
Given exclusive access, Mejía Botero follows Márquez as she “dares to challenge the status quo by launching a presidential campaign in Colombia, a nation beset by profound racial and socio-economic disparities,” per the synopsis.
Reclaiming the derogatory term “igualada” (used to belittle individuals asserting rights deemed beyond their position in society), Márquez propels a movement into the upper spheres of influence,...

Staff have taken to social media to report that Free Radical Design, the British studio behind TimeSplitters and more, has closed. Its website has also been taken offline.
Little more than a month on from November’s report that Nottingham-based studio Free Radical Design was to close, staff have begun to announce on Twitter that the axe has indeed fallen on the company.
As reported by Eurogamer, several artists and designers have now confirmed that the studio behind the TimeSplitters series of shooters has shut down.
Senior tech artist Adam Kiraly wrote on X/Twitter, “The last day at [Free Radical] was very different from what I imagined. I don’t think it sunk in properly just yet, but handed my keys in and left the building the last time.”

Werner Herzog - Radical Dreamer
Thomas von Steinaecker discovered the work of Werner Herzog very early in life, he tells me, when he was in his teens, and he has never looked back. As a filmmaker he has a strong record of his own, in documentary and, particularly, in a sort of cinematic portraiture, which is the approach he uses in his latest work, Werner Herzog – Radical Dreamer. It’s a style well suited to exploring the work of a creative artist who is anything but conventional and whose work cannot easily be slotted into a standard documentary frame. Thomas’ film is more interested in character, inspiration and theme than in providing a potted history of the great director’s work, and as such it’s a perfect complement to that work, which fans won’t want to miss.

Dear Hollywood,
As the Thanksgiving holiday dawns, I urge you to include Latino films and performances on your winter watch list and give Hollywood Latinos and their projects a fair chance to be seen.
While Latinos are a growing and essential part of the cultural and social fabric of America, based on the dismal numbers from the recent USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative Report on major Hollywood films released between 2007-2022, it’s clear that Hollywood — America’s narrative-creating and image-defining institution — is broadly failing to acknowledge or include the Latino community.
The Annenberg report notes slow progress over the years. In 2007, no Hispanic/Latino actor held a lead or co-lead role in major Hollywood films. In 2021 and 2022, there were marginal gains, with 10 films where Hispanic/Latino actors held lead or co-lead roles, out of a total of 109 and 118 leading roles, respectively. Among directors and producers of major Hollywood films, less than 5% were Hispanic or Latino,...

Festival and specialty fare releases crowded the top ten this weekend with Priscilla (A24) and The Holdovers (Focus Features) expanding to hit nos. 4 and 6 respectively. Yash Raj Films’ Bollywood thriller Tiger 3 is at no. 8, and world of mouth continued to buoy Radical (Pantelion/Participant) with Eugenio Derbez, rounding out the list at no. 10.
Meanwhile, Kristoffer Borgli’s dark comedy Dream Scenario had a strong limited opening — the latest in a string of them from A24. Orlando, My Political Biography, an erudite doc from Sideshow/Janus Films based on the Virginia Woolf novel, grossed an estimated $7.5k in one theater (Film Forum) with Friday and Saturday sellouts.
That’s a nice indie weekend. With The Marvels melting down and some wide releases having shifted due to the now-settled SAG-AFTRA strike, there’s been a window for independents on awards season runs.

After a terrific October, things settled down for the first weekend of November, as few major studios wanted to open the holiday movie season, and no new movies opened in more than 1,500 theaters. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Some might remember that this weekend was when Warner Bros had planned to release “Dune Part II” until the decision was made a few months back to move it to 2024. So far, that move hasn’t benefitted anyone much, at least not in terms of box office.
After setting a number of records last weekend, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” took a massive plunge in its second weekend, probably not helped by the fact that it was already streaming on Peacock. Still, it was able to remain #1 with an estimated $19.4 million, down 76% from its opening weekend, to bring its North American total to $113.6 million. The PG-13 horror movie added another...

Radical with Eugenio Derbez built on its smash opening in Mexico to hit no. 5 at the U.S. box office with a super $2.7 million at 416 theaters. The Pantelion/Participant release had delayed its debut Stateside by two weeks to skirt The Eras Tour juggernaut, allowing word of mouth to build for the drama about a dedicated teacher in a troubled Mexican border town.
Priscilla by Sofia Coppola is looking at an estimated $5 million weekend and a no. 4 box office slot in a major week-two expansion to 1,359 screens. The film with Cailee Spaeny as Priscilla Presley and Jacob Elordi as Elvis now has an estimated cume of $5.3 million in one of the year’s best expansions and Sofia Coppola’s second best of her career. Ticket sales were led by a younger female audience — 75% under 35 and 65% female.
Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers from Focus Features, starring Paul Giamatti, grossed $600k on 64 screens.

On a weekend when “Five Weeks at Freddy’s” (Universal) dropped 76 percent and overall grosses were $65 million on a traditionally prime release date, it could have been worse. With limited studio alternatives, there were some good holds among longer-run films, and solid expansions for “Priscilla” (A24) and “The Holdovers” (Focus). “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” (AMC) showed particular strength with a 13 percent drop in its fourth weekend.
“Freddy’s” added $19.4 million after its unexpectedly massive opening. It’s also a massive fall — one of the biggest ever for its level of initial gross, and more so for a film with an A- Cinemascore. Still, let’s be honest: A month ago, a prediction of “Freddy’s” grossing nearly $20 million its second weekend would be considered delusional.

It’s also a massive fall — one of the biggest ever for its level of initial gross, and more so for a film with an A- Cinemascore. Still, let’s be honest: A month ago, a prediction of “Freddy’s” grossing nearly $20 million its second weekend would be considered delusional.

In what is one of the lowest grossing weekends of the year, Five Nights at Freddy’s was able to overcome a truly horrific second weekend decline of 76% to remain atop the box office with an estimated $19.4 million. As we said in our Thursday predictions, no matter the decline this movie saw, anything it made was just the cherry on top of the massive $80 million sundae it had last week.
It is evident this film was made for the fans and the fans propelled it to that record breaking opening, but with no real appeal to general audiences, we are seeing the type of decline a film like this can have. Of course it really doesn’t matter when your film costs just $20 million to make and has already surpassed $140 million worldwide in just one week. This isn’t a Flash or Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning or Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny...

Universal and Blumhouse’s horror hit Five Nights at Freddy’s led a frightfully slow frame at the domestic box office amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.
Originally, Denis Villeneuve’s high-profile tentpole Dune: Part Two was set to open this weekend, but the movie fled to 2024 because of the actors strike prohibition on stars doing any promotion. Legendary Pictures, home of the Dune franchise, believes the sequel’s cast — including Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet — is integral to the movie’s success.
Domestic ticket sales for all films are expected to come in at around $64 million for the weekend, one of the lowest showings of the year so far.
Five Nights at Freddy’s remains a star in its own right. The pic earned $19.4 million from 3,789 theaters in its sophomore outing as it jumped the $100 million mark domestically in less than 10 days. It’s no surprise that the pic tumbled a steep 76 percent,...

After the immense riches of Halloween weekend thanks to Universal/Blumhouse’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” the box office is suffering a sharp drop as the video game adaptation is leading the charts with just $19.4 million in its second weekend.
That total represents a 76% drop from the Blumhouse record $80 million that “Five Nights” scored last weekend. But that was expected by both Universal and box office observers given the film’s fan-heavy appeal and its day-and-date release on Peacock. That doesn’t change the fact that “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is already a big theatrical win with $217 million grossed worldwide and counting, against a $20 million budget, while setting viewership records on Peacock.
Still, it is a rough weekend for theaters and the box office to kick off the month of November, as overall grosses have plummeted nearly 50% from last weekend to just $65 million, with no major studio releases on the slate.

Genre-bending is something music artists have only in recent years had the freedom to explore. But Guatemalan singer and songwriter Gaby Moreno has always made music on her own terms - and she's been so effortless at it, you could hardly tell back in the day that she was even breaking the rules. The artist started dabbling in pop, rock, folk, jazz, and blues in both English and Spanish more than a decade ago, when most artists couldn't get away with it.

Based on Joshua Davis’s 2013 article for Wired, “A Radical Way of Unleashing a Generation of Geniuses,” Radical, a stirring, poignant drama co-written and adapted by Christopher Zalla (Blood of My Blood), literally and figuratively revolves around Jose Urbina Lopez Elementary School in Matamoros, Mexico. A town on the U.S/Mexico border, Matamoros suffers from crushing poverty, dilapidated infrastructure, and gang-related violence. It’s as hopeless a city or town — depressingly, painfully real by all accounts — as any put on Spanish-language, Mexico-set film since Luis Buñuel’s award-winning classic, Los Olvidados (The Forgotten Ones) almost 75 years ago. Unlike Issa Lopez’s recent — and it should be added, excellent — horror-thriller hybrid, Tigers Are Not Afraid, Radical centers the drama on the elementary school itself, the...

It’s a weird month. No one is talking about the new Marvel movie. Everyone is clamoring for offerings from streamers Netflix and Apple. And somehow another Trolls movie’s coming out already. Ask anyone on the street if they know the title of Disney’s new animated movie Wish (opens November 22) and you might be hard-pressed to find the answer.
Primed for International Oscar hopefuls and small-scale indies to take your local multiplex over, November should be delivering some gems your way as a result. So take a look at the walls and see if any of the below are hanging besides the glossier mainstream fare. They might just be worth a ticket.
Two-hander
While there’s obviously more than two people on the poster for Radical, the story being told concerns two entities: teacher and students. And rather than focus on the former standing in front of the...

After October began and ended with two monstrous box office hits, November starts a bit quieter with a few lower-key releases that may have trouble making a significant mark. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
A24 will be releasing Sofia Coppola‘s “Priscilla,” starring Cailee Spaeney as Priscilla Presley and Jacob Elordi as Elvis Presley, nationwide on Friday after a platform release into four theaters in New York and L.A. this past weekend, where it averaged a solid $33k per location. Adapted by Coppola from Priscilla Presley‘s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” the movie shows a darker side to the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll in the toxic and abusive treatment of his younger wife.
Obviously, two things going for “Priscilla” is Coppola’s own popularity as a filmmaker going back to 1999’s “The Virgin Suicides” and more recent films like “The Bling Ring” in 2013, although...

Mexico’s official entry to the Best International Feature Oscar race, Lila Aviles’ “Totem,” and Tatiana Huezo’s documentary “The Echo” (“El Eco”) snagged three prizes apiece at the Morelia International Film Festival (Ficm), which wrapped Sunday, Oct. 29.
The awards doled out Saturday capped a busy 21st edition that saw a constellation of luminaries in town, including Jodie Foster, Jessica Chastain, Peter Saarsgard, Viggo Mortensen, Danny Huston, James Ivory, Irène Jacob and producing partners Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy.
Mexico’s multi-Oscar nominated cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, who received the festival’s Premio Cuervo lifetime achievement award, served as a juror in the official selection which gave best Mexican feature and best director awards to “Totem,” described by Variety as an“intimate, emotionally rich” film. “Totem” also took home the Audience Award, a good indication of its box office potential.

Exclusive: Ahead of its U.S. release on November 3, Eugenio Derbez-starrer Radical is off to a great start in Mexico. The film, which won the Festival Favorite Award when it premiered at Sundance in January, opened last weekend in Mexico, selling 631.7K tickets, outdoing the sophomore frame of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, as well as that film’s debut the previous session; both in terms of admissions.
Released by Videocine, this was the biggest local-language opening in Mexico since the Covid era began in both grosses and ticket sales. Radical grossed Mxn 43,339,719 ($2.36M) across the October 20-22 frame, which is just slightly under what The Eras Tour brought in across its second weekend. That’s because the Taylor Swift movie is being sold at event pricing with tickets going for Mxn 215 a pop versus Mxn 69 for Radical. The latter also had the highest per-screen average of the October 20-22 session.
