Justin Long and Cobie Smulders both have a likability that works well in romantic comedies. They can be naturally charismatic in movies, and that kind of charm can work wonders for a romantic comedy. Long and Smulders – which sounds like an insurance company – starring in a romantic comedy sounds appealing and we’ll soon see them in Literally, Right […]

Happy face-off challenge night! For some reason, the DWTS stars did not dress as dancing presidents as they competed against other stars for immunity, which if you ask us is a real missed opportunity. We could have seen Ryan Lochte dressed as Teddy Roosevelt! Rick Perry could have finally gotten the chance to play the Potus! It could have been beautiful! Anyway, instead of doing that, tonight's debate-shortened hour of Dancing with the Stars had couples of couples competing for immunity in tomorrow night's elimination by dancing in the same style. It was great, we liked it, and this would be a great thing for this show to adopt more often. Anyway, we've got some ears to...

Exclusive: Before The Mentalist‘s Red John, there was 1990s serial killer Keith Hunter Jesperson, known as the “Happy Face Killer” because of the happy face he drew on a bathroom wall and in anonymous letters he sent to the media and prosecutors during his spree. David Arquette is set to portray the Canadian murderer in Happy Face (working title), a Lifetime original movie about the infamous case. A troubled kid of an abusive alcoholic father who tortured and killed animals and attempted to kill kids who bullied him, Jesperson spent 15 years as a married truck driver with three kids before getting divorced in 1990 and pursuing a career as a policeman. After an injury derailed his plan, he returned to truck driving and launched his murdering spree which spanned six U.S. states. Jesperson, who is serving life in prison, clams to have killed 160 people, but only eight victims have been confirmed,...

Good news for Derf Backderf from San Diego Comic-Con: his autobiographical comic My Friend Dahmer has been optioned for a film adaptation. So even if there never is a movie made of this fine graphic novel, Backderf stands to see a pretty nice paycheck coming his way, and it always warms our hearts to see artists getting paid and paid well.
According to the article by The Hollywood Reporter, the producers are not looking to make a crass horror movie based upon the life and times of serial-killer/cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer, with whom Backderf attended high school. Rather, they seek to attain the same level of unflinching and disturbing coming-of-age story that Backderf brought to us in the book (which you should buy right now, if you haven’t already). Given their pedigree of more indie projects, these producers strike me as knowing what they’re doing.
At least, I certainly hope so.

She's been fired by every acting agency in town, refused an invite to Vanity Fair's Oscars bash, even pimps wouldn't fund her films … so how is Julie Delpy still making movies?
Julie Delpy wrote 2 Days In New York because it struck her, looking around, that most Hollywood romcoms were hilariously awful in their depictions of women her age. That is, women in their late 30s and early 40s. The Anistons and Barrymores who, on screen at least, are still "having the problems of a 25-year-old. Like, should I date him, should I not date him? Should I have sex with him but tell him I don't like him? Ok. I mean, I have friends who are still single, but even they don't ask themselves those kind of questions. They've evolved into something else."

Week 1 of Season 14 was heralded as Dancing With the Stars‘ greatest-ever kickoff. Week 2 landed with an unexpected thud. And so it was anyone’s guess what to expect as the show headed into Week 3. Would last week’s cavalcade of missteps create an ugly avalanche, or would our latest crop of celebs make a triumphant collective comeback? And most importantly, how much (or how little) would William Levy wear?

Last weekend, some of the biggest and best bands from all over the world parked their fluid-stained buses in the fluid-stained bus capital of the world, San Francisco, for the Outside Lands Music Festival. Outside Lands is a 3-Day outdoor festival in San Fran’s beautiful Golden Gate Park, a park whose streams would soon run amber with the urine of drunk a-holes. Now my own experience with music festivals was not necessarily great. Back in 2001, while I was studying abroad in Budapest, I made the “adult” decision to travel to Nuremberg, Germany (“Home of the Trials!”) for MTV’s Rock-Im-Park festival, mainly because Radiohead was going to be playing, with a side of Dave Coulier’s ex-gf Alanis. My friends and I bought sleeping bags but decided against getting a tent, because it was June in Germany and I was Tim Pawlenty sure it would be warm enough! Meanwhile...

Has it been a decade of films and freaks already? Well, it has! The 10th annual Coney Island Film Festival is set to run once again on Sept. 24-26 at the world famous Sideshows by the Seashore — the last operating circus-style sideshow/freak show in the U.S.A.
The festival starts with real bang this year with the Brooklyn premiere of Gary Beeber‘s latest documentary Dirty Martini and the New Burlesque, which chronicles the rise of the hot new burlesque trend in NYC and its most popular star, Dirty Martini. The film will also be preceded by two short films: The recently uncovered Museum of Wax by playwright Charles Ludlam and Jaye Cherian’s documentary Shape of the Shapeless.
This year the festival is also celebrating by hosting director Darren Aronofsky as their 2010 honoree. On Sept. 26, Aronofsky — who was born in South Brooklyn — will be present at a...

The 7th annual Atlanta Underground Film Festival is like having four different fests crammed into an exhaustive three days on Aug. 27-29. It’s an outrageous underground fest, an animation festival, a documentary fest and a horror movie festival: The culmination of a month of fests run by Atlanta’s Festival League. There’s tons of short films, documentaries, features and more.
There’s lots of great stuff to recommend, too. On the last night of the fest, there will be a screening of Chris Hansen‘s second feature film, Endings, which tells the touching story of three people spending their last day on Earth together. The film was reviewed on Bad Lit a few months ago. On the short film front, there’s Loretta Hintz‘s wild lesbian bestiality (sort of) tale, The Sheep and the Ranch Hand and two films by the perpetually awesome Neil Ira Needleman, Meeskit...
