Theokoles fought in the style of Dimachaerus, which incorporated two swords and little to no armor. Such a style was selected for only very skilled Gladiators, as fighting without a shield was very dangerous. A part of Theokoles' back story was, that he fought with two swords and no armor simply because he enjoyed getting cut. (Which is supported by the numerous scars on his face and body, and themselves support tales of his being cut over a thousand times in the arena without falling.)
Theokoles was an Albino who likely suffered from "Photophobia" (Extreme sensitivity to light) so Crixus shining the light reflecting from his helmet was very painful and disorienting for Theokoles.
When Illithyia requests to see Crixus & Spartacus privately, Spartacus arrives in shackles while Crixus' hands are free. Typically, slaves were chained when in close quarters with Romans. According to Steven DeKnight, Crixus' hands weren't shackled becuase he was meant to remove his sublagaria and felt it would be silly for him to be shackled, only to have a guard free his hands just so he could de-robe. In other instances however, the Champion of the House is afforded the privilege of being un-shackled in the villa.
This episode carries the first of only two times that Lucretia ever speaks to Spartacus directly.
Theokoles was portrayed by New Zealand Stunt actor/Mixed Martial Artist Reuben de Jong; who stands at 6"6.
