‘Dracula’ 1931 actress Carla Laemmle dead at 104 (photo: Carla Laemmle ca. 1930) Carla Laemmle, a bit player in a handful of silent movies and at the dawn of the sound era — e.g., the horror classics The Phantom of the Opera (1925) and Dracula (1931) — and a niece of Universal Studios co-founder Carl Laemmle, died on June 12, 2014, at her Los Angeles home. Laemmle, who had reportedly been in good health, was 104 years old. Born Rebekah Isabelle Laemmle on October 20, 1909, in Chicago, Carla Laemmle was less known for her movie work than for having survived most of her contemporaries and for her family connection to the Universal mogul — her father, Joseph Laemmle, was Carl’s brother. ‘Dracula’ actress was a member of Carl Laemmle’s ‘very large faemmle’ "Uncle Carl Laemmle, Has a very large faemmle," once half-joked poet Ogden Nash, in reference to Laemmle’s penchant for hiring family members. As Laemmle’s niece,...

When Lgbt people leave the safety of the city in films, it usually spells bad news – and Stranger by the Lake and Tom at the Farm don't buck the trend
Gay people and the city have been a good match since Sodom and Gomorrah. From the molly houses of 18th-century London to 1970s San Francisco via prewar Berlin, the urban environment has always been the natural habitat of queer culture – a place where Lgbt people can set their own rules, form their own families, be anonymous when they want to and find company when they fancy it. The countryside, on the other hand, is the place they escape from – a realm of social conformity with limited opportunities for culture, sex or socialising, and perhaps even a site of danger.
That's the stereotype, anyway, both in reality and on screen. Innumerable movies with claims to gay-classic status are inseparable from their urban settings: London has Victim,...

Future Film Festival, London
This three-day festival is aimed at nurturing young film-makers, and there's plenty for them to be inspired by. The first day focuses on documentary as a tool for radical politics and social change (as in The Act Of Killing or Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer), and the second, on fiction, brings rebellious teen flick We Are The Freaks. The third day is on animation, with screenings, workshops (on how to make a short doc on your mobile)and professional advice, including wise words from Gravity's visual effects ace, Neil Corbould.
BFI, SE1, Fri to 23 Feb
Glasgow Film Festival
Where to start with this many-tentacled sprawl of a festival? How about Scarlett Johansson cruising Glasgow in a Transit van trying to pick up men? That's on offer in Jonathan Glazer's dark sci-fi Under The Skin,...

Trains of Innocence: Savage Road Story to the Land of Broken Dreams
Among the vast and redundant collection of tales dealing with illegal immigration, very few can claim to be unique. Given that there are some inherent qualities to these stories, it takes an assertive new voice to infuse the subject matter with honesty. Spanish director Diego Quemada-Díez’ La Jaula de Oro, which translates to “The Golden Cage”, is perhaps the most poetic, and neo-realist film about the struggles of people searching for a better future thousands of miles away from home, and at any cost.
Trying to disguise her feminine qualities, Sara (Karen Martínez) cuts her hair binds her breasts, as she gets ready to depart from her native Guatemala with her boyfriend Juan (Brandon López) and their friend Samuel (Carlos Chajon). The trio of kids, all of them no older than 16, head out determined to make it to the United States.

How many breakups and songs about Taylor’s breakups have to happen before everyone realizes that the one person she should sing a song about is herself, since they are clearly all her fault!
Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner, Jake Gyllenhaal, John Mayer, Conor Kennedy, Cory Monteith, and now Harry Styles – the list of Hollywood men that Taylor Swift has broken up with. And you’re going to tell me that it’s always their fault? I beg to differ!
Before all the Taylor fans attempt to say I am stupid, or that my last name is Weakland and I must have weak relationships in my life or say something even worse, think about this: Taylor is a very successful pop artist that can’t transfer that success to a real relationship. That is a fact.

So another week has come and passed, and with unemployment still a rising concern the BBC sees fit to grant us with more and more footage of imbeciles vying for a big money investment in television that is both galling and upsetting to watch, but also a subtle indication as to what the future may hold if the job situation stays as it is: i.e A desperate, shameless, televised battle to the death for the last remaining burger flipper position at McDonalds.
In keeping with that theme, this week’s desperate and shameless televised battle for Lord Alan Sugar’s electronic equipment fuelled blood money involves class A misogyny from Misogynist Adam, the invention of new exercise regimes and Lord Sugar not shuffling the teams around and making my job a hell of a lot simpler. It’s the little things in life you know.

Once Upon a Time 1.14 Recap: From Dreamy to Grumpy...A Tale of Broken Dreams
It seems wrong to say that this week's Once Upon a Time was all about destroyed dreams. After all, this is a fairytale sort of story and that just seems too depressing to be true. But it was about broken dreams, in a way. In the fairytale world, we were introduced to two fairies: Nova, the cute but clumsy pink fairy played by guest star Amy Acker, and the Blue Fairy. As Nova's superior, the Blue Fairy talked about the importance of delivering fairy dust (the magic that helps power the world). But despite Nova's eagerness, the Blue Fairy told her the likelihood of her becoming a fairy godmother any time soon was just laughable. Nova, then, was labelled a "dreamer".
Meanwhile, near the village, there were rows upon rows of eggs. Eggs that dwarves would hatch from.

Valentine's Day, Nationwide
It's the date date-movies were made for – but your choice could be the difference between heart-make or heartbreak. The safest option, therefore, is an old classic in a new setting, and luckily, there are plenty of those around this year. Like Brief Encounter, as unimpeachably swooning yet hilariously stiff a romance as you could desire. The Secret Cinema team are mounting simultaneous showings of the film in various cities around the country on Tuesday to launch their pop-up Other Cinema initiative, spearheaded by four 1940s-themed nights at London's Troxy, with usherettes and a live organist (dress code: black tie, with a flower). In a similar vein, dead certainties such as Casablanca and Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet play in Hackney's Round Chapel (Tue to Fri). Or for a cheap date, there's a free outdoor screening of It Happened One Night, outside the National Theatre; snuggle under a...

Everett Kevin Nealon as Doug on “Weeds”
So, as much as we might be starting to think that “Weeds” jumped the shark a while back, we’re glad to see that their art department is exploring some creative credit sequencing this season.
Our opening shot is a copy machine, and the title cards and creator credits are hidden in a series of interesting nooks and crannies. Watch for this copy machine to come back later in today’s episode.

The 16th annual San Antonio Film Festival, which runs June 23-27, is truly a great combination of celebrating local talent and international cinema, screening films produced in Texas to ones produced in Europe, South America and the Middle East.
There’s also a distinct flavor of socially aware fictional narratives and documentaries, including films about Tibetan refugees, migrant workers, the 2008 Presidential election, alcoholism and genocide. But, that’s not to say the fest is a totally serious affair as there’s also several genre films about the World Cup, sheep rustlers, dancers, crooks and other ne’er-do-wells. It looks like a fun mix.
The full lineup of films is below. The way the festival runs is that films screen in blocks in three different theaters. A “block” of films will generally contain a feature or two (feature = film that is 50 mins. or more), plus several shorts. In the lineup I have up,...
