Ever since X-Men ’97 was revived by Marvel Studios, the superhero landscape has entered into a pseudo-nostalgic era, where audiences have begun to reminisce about the good old days, when animated series were the go-to format for good superhero fiction. Almost immediately, there was a demand to bring back other animated series, not just from Marvel, but other studios that had previously produced great superhero content like Batman Beyond.

There is a great beauty to what Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part 3 is doing—two voice actors who spend a huge part of their careers working together as one of the most iconic duos of all time; The Batman and The Joker. Collaborating for the final time, they get to perform, even though one of them has already passed on.
An action sequence from Batman: Mask of the Phantasm featuring Kevin Conroy
There have never been two actors who have fit as well as Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill did. Both were perfectly suited for the roles they played; both were hired around the same time, and both played the characters for a very long time. The voice of the Bat literally spent the majority of his life in the mind of the character, recording his final words as the Dark Knight before his passing.

For many fans, Bruce Timm’s Dcau gave the most definitive version of Batman. Matt Reeves’ The Batman took inspiration from Timm’s dark and gritty tone of the character in Batman: The Animated Series. Timm proved that he could develop feature-length animated movies, debuting with the Batman movie, Mask of the Phantasm. However, Timm never once got the call from DC or WB to create a live-action Batman film.
Batman: The Animated Series creator Bruce Timm could’ve done a great job with a live-action film
Timm knows that he missed his chance, admitting that he was too lazy to pursue the live-action project. He was even confident that he could come up with a decent movie, that was better than George Clooney’s Batman & Robin and reached somewhere near Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

Batman: The Animated Series, a cornerstone of beloved DC shows, celebrated its 28th anniversary. Batman: The Animated Series was followed by two sequel series — Superman: The Animated Series (1996-2000) and The New Batman Adventures (1997-1999).

These three series, along with several films, make up the DC Animated Universe (Dcau). But what is it about these shows that resonates with fans, even those who typically favor Marvel?

Robert Pattinson’s Batman could have been a part of James Gunn’s Dcu but has since been labeled an Elseworld story, distinct from what will be offered in the Dcu. However, despite the more grounded approach that the character and the universe have taken, it is possible to tie it in with characters like Superman, Wonder Woman, and the wider DC Universe.
Robert Pattinson as Batman in The Batman
Matt Reeves’ version of The Dark Knight will exist in its own little universe for the time being. A different version of Batman will be part of the wider Dcu, one that will make its debut with Damien Wayne as its Robin. Kevin Conroy's performance as Bruce Wayne and Batman remains the most accurate and perfect portrayal of the Caped Crusader. The late actor didn't need to fake a deep voice to turn on the Batman, or a voice modulator to appear threatening. He didn't need to be silly to be funny. With just his voice — and a team of skilled animators — he managed to bring to life a Bruce Wayne who is cool and suave, along with a Batman who is scary yet inspiring, strong yet vulnerable. When Conroy finally was able to play the character in live-action, he even managed to add a darker and more violent side to the character.
Conroy's take on Batman defined the character for a generation. This also made the news that Conroy's last performance as the world's greatest detective would be in the "Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League" video game rather conflicting.

Criminal, the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips, will soon become a TV series on Prime Video.
Prime Video has given a series order to Criminal, nearly a year after it was put on the development fast-track. A writers’ room for the project was put together early last year, but the WGA strike brought development to a halt. Criminal tells “the interweaving saga of several generations of families tied together by the crimes and murders of the past.” Ed Brubaker wrote the script for the pilot and will co-showrun the series with Jordan Harper (Hightown). Both will also executive produce alongside Sean Phillips, Sarah Carbiener, Phillip Barnett, and Legendary Television.

I love it when a Batman-centric project arrives animated and has a stylized design. Such is the case with Warner Bros. Animation’s family holiday movie Merry Little Batman, which takes the Caped Crusader and his son Damian Wayne and gives them an illustrative, Ron Searle-inspired coat of paint.
As if Prime Video hasn’t cornered the market enough regarding stellar superhero content, their acquisition of Merry Little Batman, along with a ton of other Batman-related projects, including the Bruce Timm/Matt Reeves/J.J. Abrams animated series Batman: Caped Crusader, from Warner Bros. Discovery, adds just a bit of power to the streamer’s greatness. One Zaslav’s trash is another studio’s treasure. The funniest part is that this is the best DC movie Warner Bros. didn’t even distribute this year. Ain’t that a killer joke?

Prime Video’s next adult animated series is going to the devil.
The Amazon-owned streamer has ordered two seasons of Hazbin Hotel, a series based on a 2019 animated pilot of the same name by Vivienne Medrano. A24 is producing the series, with Fox’s Bento Box Entertainment handling the animation. The first season is set to premiere in January.
Hazbin Hotel centers on Charlie, the princess of Hell, and her mission of rehabilitating demons as a means of peacefully reducing overpopulation in the realm. She opens a hotel with the hope that her guests will check out and move into Heaven. Most of Hell is skeptical to say the least, but her devoted partner, Vaggie, and their first test subject, adult film star Angel Dust, stand by her. A powerful entity called the Radio Demon reaches out to assist Charlie, giving her crazy dream a chance to become a reality.

Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios are in a rough era they’d like to forget as soon as possible, at least regarding their live-action content. However, DC has always been known for terrific animated content since the legendary ‘Batman: The Animated Series.’ In the last 30 years, DC spawned many animated movies and television series. Some of them were absolutely terrific, and the minority of them not so much, but still, DC fans always have a good reason to look forward to upcoming animated content.

The era of toy movies has arrived. Weeks ahead of the official release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, the iconic toy company Mattel has made headlines for even more toy-inspired flicks in the works, including an “A24-type” movie about Barney and, now, a “gritty” film adaptation of Hot Wheels produced by J.J. In a new report from The New Yorker offering a run-down of the upcoming media projects Mattel is engaged in, fans received a preview of what the forthcoming Hot Wheels film will be like. The project — produced by Abrams’ production company, Bad Robot — was first announced over a year ago in April 2022, and will reportedly be “emotional and grounded and gritty,” though the script has “yet to materialize.”

Bruce Timm is taking another stab at the Dark Knight with Batman: Caped Crusader. Executive Vice President of Alternative Programming for Warner Bros. Animation Peter Girardi told the crowd at Annecy (via Variety) that Caped Crusader will give Timm the opportunity to do everything he wasn’t able to do with Batman: The Animated Series.
“It’s everything that Bruce Timm wanted to do in the original series [the 1992 “Batman, the Animated Series”] but because it ran on a kid’s channel, he wasn’t able to do it,” Peter Girardi said. “So this definitely skews older. It’s more of his complete vision.” The Batman: Caped Crusader footage screened at Annecy was in the early stages, but was described as “ultra noir” with a “brooding tone.“

Annecy — London-based Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe is set to initiate production next week on “Beast Boy: Lone Wolf,” the first time than a DC title that will be made out of the U.K.
The announcement was made at a studio focus for Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, whose fan favourites had a student/exec audience hollering in approval.
Introduced by Sam Register, president of all three companies, the focus must rate at the fastest-paced of all big studio unveils at Annecy, packed by never-seen-before footage of multiple shows. Register didn’t talk strategy: The audience wanted to see shows, and studio execs were excited to show them.
Indirectly, however, the focus said much about the state of animation at Warner Bros. Discovery after it scaled back on originals and restructured organization last year. Some pivots seen at the focus:

After years of tech-driven disruption (remember when a phone company briefly owned Warner Bros.?), David Zaslav has been trying to strike a back-to-basics, business-as-usual tone with anyone who will listen: Wall Street analysts, Hollywood creatives and most recently the crowd of theater owners gathered in Las Vegas at CinemaCon this week.
The Warner Bros. Discovery chief has strongly rejected the streaming-first strategy of his predecessor, Jason Kilar, the Hulu cofounder who advanced day-and-date or HBO Max-only releases for Warner Bros. movies. At CinemaCon, Zaslav promised long theatrical runs for Warner’s slate of new movies like “Barbie” and “The Flash.”
Movies seemed like something of an afterthought at the unveiling of Max, the replacement for HBO Max, this month. “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” which faltered at the box office, will have its streaming debut as Max begins service on May 23. There was no mention of streaming-only movies.

Prime Video is expanding its Batman universe with not one but two more projects.
After saving ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ from HBO’s chopping block in March, Prime Video has announced that it will be adding the family-friendly movie ‘Merry Little Batman’ as well as the series spinoff ‘Bat-Family’ to its library. Both projects come from Warner Bros. Animation and DC.
Whereas “Batman: Caped Crusader” is a reimagining of Batman’s mythology in the same vein as “Batman: The Animated Series,” “Merry Little Batman” will be more of a comedic take on this superhero. When big Batman’s son Damian Wayne finds himself alone in Wayne Manor on Christmas Eve, he has to defend his home and Gotham City as “Little Batman” before the holiday is ruined. Mona Awad's 2019 novel "Bunny" was bound to be adapted for the screen. Its mix of fairy tale and horror themes combined with classic teen movie aesthetics seemed tailor-made for the BookTok demographic -- that's the literature subcommunity on TikTok -- which has been a reliable source of new material for Hollywood in recent years. And would you believe, the book about a gaggle of rich girls who dabble in magic, and an outsider who gets sucked into their world of dark academia did indeed prove popular with the BookTok crowd, leading Hollywood into a bidding war for the rights.
Thus far, AMC has snapped up the television rights, but as Deadline reports, J.J. Abrams's Bad Robot has now optioned Awad's novel for a big-screen adaptation. And considering Awad took inspiration from such movies as "Heathers," "Carrie," "The Craft," and "Mean Girls," it seems there is lots to draw from in that department.

In 2022, WarnerMedia was purchased by Discovery for $43 billion, causing a massive shake-up in the film industry. The newly minted CEO, David Zaslav, announced some dubious plans for the new supra-company, and then proceeded to slash great swaths of entertainment from the Warner Bros./HBO slate, leaving thousands out of jobs. Not only was a nearly-complete "Batgirl" movie just outright canceled, but nearly $2 billion worth of film and TV projects were dropped. This massive kerfuffle left a lot of film and TV fans in a lurch. Some of their favorite shows were being mercilessly axed, while other projects currently in production were shoved into purgatory. Only a few days ago, the upcoming Bruce Timm animated series "Batman: Caped Crusader" was announced to be coming out on Amazon after WB/Disco sold it off.

Nearly two years ago, HBO Max and Cartoon Network ordered a new Batman animated series from Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, and Matt Reeves. Fans were excited about a new Batman series, especially with the involvement of Bruce Timm, but the series unfortunately didn’t survive the axe of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, who scrapped it along with many others. Thankfully, Amazon has come to the rescue and given Batman: Caped Crusader a two-season order.

J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves’ animated series “Batman: Caped Crusader” has been picked up at Amazon after being scrapped at HBO Max, Variety has confirmed.
The streamer has placed a two-season order for the cartoon, which is described as “a reimagining of the Batman mythology through the visionary lens” of executive producers Abrams, Reeves and Bruce Timm.
“Batman: Caped Crusader” was ordered to series at HBO Max in May 2021. In August 2022, the show was scrapped along with five other upcoming animated series set up at the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned streamer, including “Merry Little Batman,” “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie,” “Bye Bye Bunny: A Looney Tunes Musical,” “Did I Do That to the Holidays: A Steve Urkel Story” and “The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie.”
The animated series getting the ax came following HBO’s decision to let go of Abrams’ science fiction drama “Demimonde” last June.

Amazon Studios has ordered two seasons of “Batman: Caped Crusader.” The animated series is being billed as a reimagining of the Batman mythology via executive producers Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves, Sam Register and Ed Brubaker.
The show, produced by Warner Bros. Animation, Bad Robot Productions and 6th & Idaho, was initially positioned as an HBO Max original before Warner Bros. Discovery changed course. It was not canceled, as initially reported elsewhere, but merely put out into the third-party licensing marketplace.
Considering the IP in question, and the creators involved, it can be speculated that it fetched a lot more cash-in-hand revenue from Amazon than it would have earned as a first-party HBO Max title.
Timm was the co-creator, alongside Eric Radomski, of the groundbreaking and universally acclaimed “Batman: The Animated Series” which ran for over 100 episodes first on Fox and then on WB from 1992 to 1999. The stylized, art-deco action...

Batman: Caped Crusader has found a new home at Amazon.
The streamer and retail giant has handed out a two-season order for the animated series that was scrapped at HBO Max last August. Caped Crusader landed at the Jennifer Salke-led streamer after producer Warner Bros. Animation shopped the project following the cost-cutting move that saw parent company Warner Bros. Discovery scrap the show more than a year and a half after ordering it straight to series. Other streamers, including Netflix, Apple and Hulu, also kicked the tires on the project that marks a reunion for executive producers J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves, who previously collaborated on The WB Network’s beloved Felicity.
The animated series hails from Bruce Timm, Abrams and Reeves and was sold to a streaming rival as part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s efforts to monetize content by selling projects to third-party buyers.
