Regina Spektor's "You've Got Time" serves as the opening credits song for the Netflix hit "Orange is the New Black," and the combo of a frantic guitar riff and lyrics suggesting animals trapped in a cage is a perfect fit for the show. But as it turns out, the show's closing credit songs also expertly mesh with plot points or themes from each episode. Except for episode 11, "Little Mustachioed Shit," which uses an original instrumental from show composers Brandon Jay and Gwendolyn Sanford, each episode's closing credits features a popular or classic song that perfectly encapsulates what we've just watched. Here's the music that "Orange is the New Black" producers chose to close each episode of Season 2, and our thoughts on why they fit so perfectly. [Spoilers for all of Season 2 below.] Episode 1, "Thirsty Bird" Song: "Love Bug Blues" by Charles Bradley The season two premiere's combo of insects and love bites is perfectly capped...

Eric Lavallee: Name me three of your favorite “2013 discoveries”…
Kelly Williams: Ola Podrida’s album “Ghosts Go Blind”. The Documentary – Deceptive Practice: The Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky Jay. Walt Roberts – Hellion & Parkland actor / World-Class Fiddle Player.
Lavallee: I believe that this is your third time producing a Kat Candler film (Hellion follows Hellion the short, and Black Metal). How did that professional relationship begin and could you discuss the creative dynamic between the two of you.
Williams: Even though we both live in Austin, we actually met through a mutual friend, Zack Phillips, at Sundance in 2001. We became friends over the years. In 2009, I programmed her short film, Love Bug, at the Austin Film Festival where I was a film programmer, but we didn’t actually work together until we made the Hellion short in the summer of 2011. Making that short, it became pretty obvious that we wanted to work together more.

Kicking off their week with a leisurely lunch, Joe Jonas and Blanda Eggenschwiler showed up at Mauro’s Café at Fred Segal on Monday afternoon (October 21).
The “Love Bug” rocker and his gorgeous girlfriend were joined by a bodyguard as they exited the eatery, amidst rumors that the recent Jonas Brothers tour cancellation was caused by Joe’s alleged drug addiction.
When Jonas was photographed meeting with Cast Recovery Services’ honcho/addiction specialist Mike Bayer, the tabloids began speculating that previous reports of Joe’s drug use turned out to be true.
Star magazine quoted a source as saying, “He’s been dealing with substance abuse issues for quite some time. The tour would have never survived with how Joe was behaving. His family has been begging him to seek help. At this point, Nick and Kevin don’t care what is going on with the band, they just want to see their brother healthy.

The release of Ron Howard’s Rush, one of the most anticipated (not to say mega-hyped) films of the year, inevitably begs comparisons to some of the great car-themed movies of the past.

It seems that automobiles have played key roles in films of every genre, from drama to horror to comedy to documentary. In some, like American Graffiti, Rebel without a Cause, and Bonnie and Clyde, the vehicles primarily help set the tone of the era in which the stories are set. In other films the cars themselves are the story. The animated Cars comes to mind, along with the Love Bug series, Christine, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. And then there are films in which the cars have taken their place alongside the human stars as film icons in their own right. James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5, for instance, as...

Herbie, The Love Bug
Written by Arthur Alsberg and Don Nelson
Starring Dean Jones, Patricia Harty, Nicky Katt, Larry Linville, Claudia Wells
When people speak of the possibility of alternate dimensions, they leave out the one closest to us all. We like to imagine a universe so similar to our own, nearly identical to the world in which we live if not for one difference. Maybe in one dimension, Bill Clinton was ousted from office, not just thrown up for impeachment. Maybe in another dimension, HD-DVD won the high-definition home-media war instead of Blu-ray. Or maybe, in some beautiful reality, Scott Norwood didn’t miss that field goal in the Super Bowl against the New York Giants. The possibilities are tantalizing because they are literally endless. In all the wonder and curiosity, however, most of us fail to recognize that there already exists another universe snuggled up tightly to ours,...

For their seventh annual edition, the Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival is really blowing things up!
Well, not literally. But the world’s premiere horror movie fest is expanding to over double its regular size, screening over 50 films on nine terrifying nights Oct. 10-18 at its new home, the prestigious AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland.
The scares kick off on the 10th with the return of local fave filmmaker Richard Bates, Jr. with the feature-length version of Excision about a teenage girl obsessed with becoming a surgeon. The film co-stars John Waters, Malcolm McDowell and Traci Lords. Bates’ original short Excision on which the feature is based screened at Spooky Movie back in 2008.
A few other Spooky Movie alumni who are back with highly anticipated new films include Mike Davis‘ “green” horror movie President Wolfman, which is composed entirely of public domain footage mixed with a rip-roarin...

In creating his entertainment empire, Walt Disney knew that his company needed to branch out beyond animation. Those hand-drawn classics took a long time to craft, so he first produced adventure flicks out of England before his take on Jules Verne, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, which was a box office sensation in 1954. Establishing a live-action division, Walt released several family flicks over the next few decades ranging from adventures like Swiss Family Robinson to the kids comedies featuring Herbie, the Love Bug and The Apple Dumpling Gang. Oops, almost forgot the tear-jerkers, those warm family flicks like Follow Me Boys and ( gulp! ) Old Yeller ( I recall a stand-up comic saying that the flick was a test that parents could give their kids-if the kid cried at the end of Yeller, then he was normal ). Many of the movies would be chopped up and turned into multiple episodes of that Sunday night TV staple,...

Yes, after what feels like years but has really only been a few months, Josh and Mike have reached the end of the Herbie, the Love Bug franchise. (Or have they?) This week, they’re thrilled that Herbie has finally joined the 21st century in the 2005 reboot/sequel Herbie: Fully Loaded, starring Lindsay Lohan, Michael Keaton, and Matt Dillon. Josh and Mike get loose and silly almost immediately, ping-ponging from a mini-discussion of John Carter to looking at two of the writers of Herbie: Fully Loaded, Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant, to the piece de resistance: Mike throwing down a challenge to all of you listeners! Find out about the challenge and more on the new Mousterpiece Cinema!

Listeners, it’s finally come to this. After four films starring the rascally Love Bug himself, Herbie, your hosts Josh and Michael have begun to question each other’s sanity. The real culprit is the topic of this week’s podcast, the 1980 film Herbie Goes Bananas, where the supposedly lovable Vw Beetle faces off against scheming thieves, an outrageously horny older woman, a stuffy cruise-ship captain, and a fuming bull. (Absolutely none of that is a lie or a joke. We promise.) For anyone hoping that Michael would, for once, succumb to the Dark Side, you may be disappointed, but you’ll get to hear Josh rage and rant like never before. This one’s an episode for the pantheon, so check out the new Mousterpiece Cinema today!

Herbie Rides Again
Written by Bill Walsh, based on the novel Car, Boy, Girl by Gordon Buford
Directed by Robert Stevenson
USA, 1974, imdb
Listen to the Mousterpiece podcast about Herbie Rides Again or read Josh’s extended thoughts about the film!

“The first rule of all drive-in sequels: make the same damn movie you made the first time!”
-Joe Bob Briggs
Herbie Rides Again stands proudly alongside Halloween III: Season of the Witch as the two films that most deliberately break the sequel rule. It is debatable which is more cruel. Halloween III has no Michael Myers (and for that matter no witches) but never explains why. No doubt many in the audience when it was first released must have been wondering when Michael Myers was going to show, right up until the moment the film ended.
While discarding most of what made the first film work: Dean Jones as racer Jim Douglas,...

The Love Bug
Directed by Robert Stevenson
Written by Bill Walsh and Don DaGradi, based on the book Car, Boy, Girl by Gordon Buford
1968, USA, imdb
As I mentioned during the Mousterpiece Cinema podcast about The Love Bug, when I was a very young boy – about 3 or 4, my parents would drive to Ndg from the Laurentians to visit my grandparents. Once there, my Bompa would take me down to his basement garage, wave his hands, intone dramatically “Abracadabra” and the garage doors would open. Then he would wave his hands and proclaim “Abracadabra” to close them back up. I thought he was quite a magician… and he was! At least in the Arthur C. Clarke sense that, “Any sufficiently advanced technology,” in this case an automatic garage-door opener in 1970, “is indistinguishable from magic.”
This is the key to the Herbie films. Children see a sentient car and believe it to...

Here we are one week into Fantasia and we are already planning our FrightFest coverage. Horror Channel has just announced the line-up for the FrightFest International Short Film Showcase. Here is the press release.
Werewolves, bats, bugs, nasty orphans, zombies, homicidal blind dates and bananas that have gone bananas – yes, it’s the FrightFest short film strand, an eclectic mix of worldwide cutting edge short films, this year presented by Horror Channel.
Among the prime cuts are the sinister Little Munchkin, from the director of forthcoming Jaime Winstone flick Elfie Hopkins, Axelle Carolyn’S directorial debut, The Last Post, starring Jean Marsh, and the demented Banana Motherf**Ker from the team behind the brilliant Papa Wrestling.
They may be short – but they’re not sweet!

Because the new standard for raunchy comedy advertising is based on tried and true red light district methods -- show off the goods, in other words -- here's a new red-band trailer for the Jason Bateman / Charlie Day / Jason Sudeikis comedy Horrible Bosses. If you've missed the two previous [1] trailers [2], the film features the three guys as hapless protagonists who enlist the aid of a 'murder consultant' (Jamie Foxx) in an attempt to do away with their three bosses, played by Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell and Jennifer Aniston. Check out the red-band trailer to see just how poorly this endeavor seems to play out. This trailer gives a lot away, but if you're good with that, then by all means, proceed. When I say the endeavor goes poorly, I mean the plan, not the film. I've had a good time with the two previous trailers, and this one looks great,...

The Houston Film Commission annually presents a collection of recent Texas-made short films that they feel are truly excellent and frankly, want to show off to Texas as well as the rest of the world. Tonight, the commission's most recent collection screens here in Austin, thanks to Austin Film Festival, which selected it for the monthly Austin Film Festival Presents series.
Three Austin films are included in the lineup: Mnemosyne Rising, the science-fiction short from Miguel Alvarez that played SXSW this year; Love Bug, Kat Candler's film about young love that won an audience award at Aff 2009; and Never Do This, a series of shorts from Scott Rice about, well, things you should never do. It's Monday morning, so let's see what's been in the news recently for Austin filmmaking and movie events.
Austin filmmaker Kat Candler's short Love Bug just won the audience award at the Little Ripper Film Festival for short films, in Melbourne, Australia. The film has played a number of Texas film fests this fall, including Austin Film Festival, where it won the Narrative Short Audience Award.Save the date: Looks like Alamo Drafthouse Lake Creek will be holding an Evil Dead trilogy movie marathon on March 26, 2010. Groovy. We'll post more info as it's available.Texas Archive of the Moving Image is holding an open house on Wednesday, December 9, at 501 Studios from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. I don't know much of anything about this organization so I'm hoping to stop by and find out more. They promise refreshments and some screenings of films from their collection.

Love movies and want to make a short road trip this weekend? Head to Fort Worth for the Lone Star International Film Festival (Lsiff), which runs from Wednesday, November 11 through Sunday, November 14. Lsiff kicks off on Sunday night with The Scenesters, which played Austin Film Festival last month. The noir-ish comedy is about a group of mumblecore-ish filmmakers trying to find a serial killer who's been murdering L.A. hipsters. Writer/director Todd Berger and actor Kevin Brennan both attended Ut in Austin.
Other films with an Austin connection scheduled for Lsiff include the quirky comedy Artois the Goat, which was shot in Austin and played SXSW this year (Jenn Brown's review); local filmmaker Kat Candler's short Love Bug, which won the Narrative Short Audience Award at Aff; and the Coen brothers' first feature, Blood Simple, which was shot in Austin, Hutto and Houston. Lsiff is also screening Tender Mercies,...

Austin Film Festival (Aff) has announced the 2009 Audience Award winners, and I'm happy to report that among the winners were a few Texas films as well as some of our favorites from the fest. Aff also announced the dates for next year's film festival and conference: October 21-28, 2010.
Throughout the week of the festival, audience members were invited to rate films by ballot after each screening. Check out Jenn Brown's review of Happy Ending, which was written and directed by Atsuriho Yamada, and which won the Aff Narrative Feature Competition audience award.
Another favorite film that won was Herpes Boy, in the Comedy Vanguard Audience Award category. I caught up with writer Byron Lane and director Nathaniel Atcheson at their second screening after-party, and they expressed gratitude to Aff for allowing them to premiere their film in Austin.

Guess what? Austin has had film-related news in the past week that has nothing to do with Fantastic Fest. Really! I'm as surprised as you are. Let's look at all the interesting stuff we at Slackerwood missed while we were watching festival films and then recuperating. If we left out anything else, feel free to share the news in the comments section.
Austin filmmaker/instructor Kat Candler is on fire this month, I swear. You can catch her 2006 feature jumping off bridges tonight at the Windsor Park branch of Austin Public Library at 6:30 pm. She also has two new short films playing at Austin Film Festival later this month: Quarter to Noon and Love Bug. Finally, a feature-film screenplay that she wrote with Chris Mass (Chalk), The Spider in the Bathtub, has just been optioned by Laf Studios, with Candler to direct.Speaking of Aff, Austin Business Journal has...
