Apple TV+ will be tapping into France’s lavish culinary heritage with “Carême,” a new original series about the world’s first celebrity chef, Antonin Carême, which will be directed by Martin Bourboulon (“The Three Musketeers: d’Artagnan”).
Set in the 19th century, the eight-episode French drama will chart the sprawling story of Carême, who rose from humble beginnings in Paris to the height of culinary stardom in Napoleon’s Europe. He not only became an iconic chef, he also became a spy for France as his talent and ambitions attracted the attention of powerful politicians, including Napoleon. The series will shed light on the miserable reality of 19th century kitchens, contrasting with the opulence of the mansions and sophisticated of aristocrats.
“Carême” will be led by a starry French cast, including Benjamin Voisin, the Cesar-winning actor of “Lost Illusions” and “Summer of 85″ in the title role. Voisin will star opposite...

Eva Green won a $1 million judgment in a British court against the producers of the failed sci-fi project “A Patriot,” which she said was of such poor quality that it would have damaged her reputation – then posted a long statement saying the “widely misreported” case forced her to stand up to “a small group of men … who tried to use me as a scapegoat.”
The “Casino Royale” star sued White Lantern Films and Smc Speciality finance, fearing that the movie she’d signed on to do was devolving to the point that it would damage her career and reputation. No help: Green’s WhatsApp messages, revealed during the case, in which she called one of the executive producers, Jake Seal, a “devious sociopath,” “pure vomit” and “evil.”
Green has since called the revelation of these messages “humiliating” and blamed her “Frenchness” for her language. The producers had countersued, arguing that...

Apple and Canal+ have signed a landmark deal that will bring Apple TV+ to all Canal+ subscribers in France, along with some other European territories.
The deal is different from the aggregation agreements that Canal+ has in place with other streamers such as Disney+ and Netflix, whose offers are being accessible as part of the French pay TV operator’s bundle.
Under the pact, Apple TV+ will be available at no extra cost to Canal+ subs from April 20. Canal+ customers can seamlessly and easily access the films and series of Apple TV+ directly on their existing set-top box — with no separate app or subscription necessary. This is a multi-territory agreement for France, French speaking-Switzerland, Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Speaking to Variety, Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior VP of services, and Maxime Saada, Canal+ chairman and CEO of Canal+ Group, said they’ve known each other for years and celebrated the idea of tying the knot.

It’s been over fifteen years since the release of David Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises and despite rumours of a sequel for over a decade, it seems that Eastern Promises 2 is well and truly dead.
Eastern Promises told the story of Anna (Naomi Watts), a midwife who delivers the baby of a young teenage prostitute who dies in childbirth. After learning that the teen had been forced into prostitution by the Russian mafia, she crosses paths with ruthless crime boss Semyon (Armin Mueller-Stahl) and his menacing driver Nikolai (Vincent Mortensen). The film also starred Vincent Cassel as Kirill, Semyon’s drunk and ruthless son, and he told The Independent that Eastern Promises 2 isn’t happening. “[Cronenberg] had a wonderful script,” Cassel said. “We were ready to do it and I don’t know why it collapsed. Now I don’t think it will happen any more.“

Vincent Cassel plays Gabriel Delage, a mercenary hired by the French government to extricate two Syrian hackers in “Liaison.” Naturally, the mission goes wrong and he’s got to find the hackers before agents from England get to them and the explosive secrets they’ve uncovered in the globetrotting thriller that premiered its first episode on Apple TV+ on Friday.
In “Liaison,” Cassel’s Gabriel and Eva Green’s character Alison Rowdy, who are on opposite sides of the thorny political situation, work together to stop a series of devastating cyberattacks.
Ahead of the premiere, TheWrap talked to the French actor about the action-packed series. Cassel, who met with real mercenaries to prepare for the role, explained that he didn’t want the fight scenes to be too “flashy.” “I had a particular approach about all these fight scenes in the series, because, [I wanted to make it] realistic. It’s easy to forgive a lot in a romance if the chemistry is strong enough, and for the first couple episodes of Apple TV+’s Liaison, the sparks between Eva Green’s Alison and Vincent Cassel’s Gabriel seem reason enough to forge ahead. It hardly matters if we don’t really understand the international conspiracy that’s reunited these estranged exes, or that we don’t yet understand what transpired between them all those years ago. The smolder between them draws us in, even when all they’re doing is exchanging a wordless gaze through a rain-splattered window.
But without enough fuel to ignite a blaze, smolder is about as far as it gets. By the time Liaison stumbles to a close, whatever flickers of promise it showed early on have long since been stamped out by indifferent storytelling and a bloated run time.

Apple TV+'s new series, Liaison, is described as a high-stakes, contemporary thriller exploring how past mistakes can potentially destroy our future.
It's an intense, heart-pounding series from start to finish, bolstered by a passionate love story between the two lead characters.
We talked with executive producer and star Vincent Cassel about the series and its combination of action and an unpredictable, multi-layered plot.
In the series, Cassel stars as Gabriel, a man Cassel describes as representing what a modern French man can be.
Eva Green stars as Alison, a woman who shares a past with Gabriel. That past is initially hidden under a veil of mystery, but as the espionage and political intrigue driving the series plays out, it reveals a passionate and enduring love story between the two.
During our interview, Cassel shared his take on the modern French man through a veil of European masculinity.

We got on to somewhat more serious subjects when discuss the series with the trio of French-language stars Laetitia Eido, Stanlislas Merhar & Iréne Jacob, as they talk about their research into the roles and how they went about finding connections to the characters, and whether they could relate in terms of ambition and drive. I’ve long been a fan of the brilliant work of Vincent Cassel. The legendary actor has proven fantastic in films like Black Swan, Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1, Mesrine: Killer Instinct, Irreversible, Eastern Promises, and so much more. And now, he takes on the role of the Stephen Hopkins-directed six-episode thriller Liaison. The upcoming series premieres on Apple TV this Friday and also features the terrific Eva Green, Daniel Francis, Lyna Dubarry, and more. And yes, the performances here are all terrific, and you can’t ask for a better couple than Green and Cassel to bring it all to life.
Interviewing Vincent Cassel is an absolute treat. While you may expect the actor to be intense, he is one of the warmest and most charming guys to talk with. Having had the pleasure of speaking to him in the past, I was thrilled to talk about his latest project.

Vincent Cassel and Eva Green are two performers who can make nearly anything watchable through their sheer undeniable screen presence. Apple TV+’s country-hopping “Liaison” tests this theory with a convoluted plot about former allies turned enemies forced to work together again. It opens with a sultry theme song by Plumm over sexy footage but never finds that heat in any of its episodes, creating a bizarre disconnect right from the beginning of each episode, despite the undeniable chemistry between Cassel and Green.

Emily Atef, who is presenting her latest film, “Someday We’ll Tell Each Other Everything,” in competition at the Berlin Film Festival, just moved to Paris to direct “La Maison,” a series depicting a fictional family-owned French luxury fashion empire.
While discussing “Someday We’ll Tell Each Other Everything” ahead of its world premiere, Atef told Variety that “La Maison” will be filled with a lot of drama and tragicomedy. “It’s very Shakespearean. There’s so much beauty and luxury with old mansions in Brittany, Parisian ‘hotel particuliers,’ and then behind all that there’s so much human poverty, and you see them ripping each other appart for power,” said Atef, who will direct the pilot and three more episodes.

If Robert De Niro ever stars in a Bruce Forsyth biopic (and he must), he will look like Vincent Cassel at this moment. Over Zoom from Paris, the engaging 56-year-old French movie star grins mirthlessly and thrusts his chin forward. I’ve just reminded him that the last time we met, 20 years ago, he and his then wife, Italian model turned actor Monica Bellucci, were scandalising the Cannes film festival with Gaspar Noé’s Irréversible, in which his character’s friend sickeningly clubs the man, who he thinks raped his wife, to death with a fire extinguisher.
“That was a different era,” Cassel says amiably as if channelling Brucie, then modulates into De Niro’s Travis Bickle.

France’s TF1 Group has posted a positive set of results for the first half of 2022, as Covid-19 pandemic challenges which weighed on turnover in 2020 and 2021 continue to subside.
The results followed news on the Wednesday (July 27) that the France’s competition authority had raised concerned about the group’s plans to merge with the M6 Group.
The group’s six-month report operation suggested the operation remained a key project for the coming months, noting it had spent 6.8m (€6.8m) on related expenses to date.
Talking on the margins of the results announcement, TF1 Studios CEO Gilles Pélisson said both parties remained committed to the plan but were also open to the fact it might not go ahead.
“The dream we shared is not necessarily shared by the competition authority,” he said. “On that basis, before the dream becomes a nightmare, there also needs to be a reality check, around...

Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key executives and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week, we’re speaking to Romain Bessi, CEO of French group Newen Studios.
