Gar reverts to his human form, and Rachel tells him that she doesn't know what is going on.
In the Batcave, Jason tells Crane that Nightwing is dead. Crane has armed himself with his sickle on a chain, and says that Batman took from him during an earlier confrontation. He says that they'll save Gotham once it's destroyed, and says that "they" can't stop them because they walk among them. Crane tells Jason that soon they will die. He tells Jason that Jason still stinks of fear after all that he's given him, and Jason tells Crane that he won't help him destroy the city.
Crane attacks Jason with his sickle. Jason dodges and runs off. The villain lets him go and talks above waves of fear and anger.
At the Chinese restaurant, Donna tells Jack and Janet that she's seen explosions. Jack knows that the police are wiping out cells of resistance one by one, and they're heading toward the restaurant. Tim and Stephen join them, and Stephen hands out Uzis. Tim tells them that Nightwing is dead, and Donna tells Tim to show him the photos someone in the mob took of the body. She checks the photos on Tim's camera but still doesn't believe them, but Janet isn't convinced and figures that if superheroes are dying, they don't stand a chance and they need to get out of Gotham, past the GCPD border patrol.
Jack has heard about an underground group north of the docks, but warns that they have to get there. Tim says that he's staying to fight for Gotham, and Janet warns that the last time Tim tried to be a superhero, he almost died. Donna insists that no one else is going to die, tells them to stay until she comes back, and leaves.
At the police department HQ, Fletcher comes into Barbara's cell to get her food cell, and tells her that he's doing what Barbara should have done. Once he leaves, Crane ties into the security systems and taunt Barbara over the intercom as he cuts up the body in the Batcave. He tells her that he recently lost his right-hand man, but has one of his own as he cuts the hands off the body. Barbara tries to ignore Crane, and Crane tells her that Nightwing is dead.
Barbara still ignore Crane, who says that the "main course" is the death of Gotham, and says that he wishes Batman, Jim Gordon, and Nightwing were there to witness his triumph. With that, Crane signs off.
In the Pit, Dick has a vision of walking through a rocky tunnel toward a bright light. He hears Rachel and Gar talking but can't see them. Crane appears and says that in the beginning there was fear, and tells Dick that his story began the night Dick's parents died. He tells Dick that Dick never trusted anything good again after the death of his parents, and Dick lived in fear. Bruce showed Dick how to live with that fear by striking first, but that's all that Dick had: fear and rage.
"Crane" tells Dick that the battle for Dick's soul is over and Dick lost because he chose the path of Bruce Wayne. He says that Dick is the son of John Grayson, not Bruce, and John would be disappointed in the man Dick has become. Crane tells Dick that he's failing like he failed everyone, and Dick remembers Wonder Girl, Hank, and Jason all dying or leaving, and how Dick always wanted Jason dead. Dick says that he didn't, but Crane continues and says that Joker was just a weapon in Dick's hands.
Dick finds himself in Joker's suit and hears Joker's laughter around him. He's holding the crowbar that Joker used to kill Jason, and Crane tells Dick that Dick always wanted Jason gone so he abandoned him. Jason came and took Dick's place, and his father figure. Dick looks down at Jason, laying bloody at his feet. Dick beats "Jason" to death.
The next morning, Blackfire goes in a parking garage and tells a man that she needs his keys and his car. She flares her hands with her new power, and the man quickly gives her the key and nervously leaves. Krypto runs up and barks to Blackfire, and the dog leads her to Conner. When they get to the hideout, Conner is passed out from Kryptonite poison. Blackfire heals him with her powers, and when he revives he tells Blackfire who poisoned him.

Rachel and Gar wait by the Pit to see if Dick emerges. She tells Gar that Dick has to fight on his own and they can't help him. Rachel wonders how Gar turned into a bat, and he says that he doesn't know but the new changes only happen only when he's afraid. He figures that he can do more, but doesn't want it to feel like he's dying like it does now. Rachel says that she thought hate gave her her powers, and when she faced Trigon it was love for the Titans that gave her power and she wouldn't let Trigon hurt them.
After explaining, Rachel has Gar close his eyes and she puts her hands to his head. Concentrating, Rachel says that Gar saw the bats and knew he had to join them, and they found him because they knew that Gar loved Dick. She tells Gar that he has everything that he has everything he needs to change painlessly. Gar smiles in agreement, then notices the waters of the Pit roiling.
Dick continues beating Jason's body, and Crane tells Dick that he's his and Dick will never escape. Dick looks at the crowbar and says that he doesn't want it, drops the crowbar, and finds himself in a forest. A man and a young Dick are running down a path nearby and laughing. Dick realizes that the man is his father John.
When John and the young Dick comes up, Dick apologizes to his father for losing his way, and was trying to be someone he's not. John tells Dick that it's okay, and he loves him. He then kisses young Dick on the cheek and continues down the trail. A girl with a balloon appears and tells Dick, her daddy, to come to her. They approach each other and Dick holds out his hand. The girl gives him the balloon, and then finds himself in the Batcave. "Crane" tells him that children do evil when evil is done to them, and Dick finds himself on a Gotham street looking at a puddle of blood.
Jason and Crane are there, and Crane tells Dick that Dick not only failed John but Jason as well. Dick insists that there's time to change Jason, but Crane says that Jason is his and Dick can't stop him. Dick punches Crane...
... and Dick emerges from the Pit. He climbs out and lies on the floor, gasping.

Conner grabs Kind and then kisses Blackfire, She blasts a nearby wall to demonstrate she now has blast powers. Blackfire threatens to blast Kind, and Kind says that she has something she wants and if she lets him live, he'll prove it.
Kind leads Blackfire and Conner to Blackfire's ship, and he admits that he lied to Blackfire about destroying it and he's glad to return it to her... if she lets him live. Blackfire says that she no desire to return home and thus no desire for the ship. Starfire comes in and says that all the Tamaranians, including her, were wrong about how they treated Blackfire. When Blackfire says that she's glad to fight, Starfire tells her sister that they need to talk.
Dick wakes up, and tells Rachel and Gar that Crane can be stopped and there's still time. He tells them to find Conner and make sure he's okay, and directs them to the abandoned control room he and Conner were using as a hideout. Dick then tells them to unite the Titans with Donna, and leaves.
Tim tells Donna that he's staying in Gotham and Donna insists that Janet can't lose her only son. He still refuses to go, and Donna tells him to be a hero by living for Janet.
Blackfire says that all her life she felt like she was meant to be a queen, and Starfire tells her sister that she is. She explains that her visions led her to the discovery of what happened to Blackfire, and wishes it wasn't true. Blackfire tells Starfire that it's not her fault, and their parents lied to both of them. Now that Blackfire knows her truth, she wants to return to Tamaran.
Kind tells Blackfire that his research team accidentally destroyed the ship's fuel, and Starfire warns that the ore necessary doesn't exist on Earth. When Kind says that the ore is available but it takes intense heat and pressure to turn it into fuel, Blackfire figures that Conner can do it. Conner asks her why she wants to go back, and says that Blackfire doesn't need to be a queen to matter and she matters to him. He asks Blackfire to stay with him, and she says that she wishes she could but it isn't that simple.
Conner is hurt and says that Blackfire is like all the rest, breaking the rules, Blackfire tells him that now she knows what her destiny is, and if she doesn't go back Tamaran then she never will. She kisses Conner and says that she knows it's a lot to ask, and asks Conner to help her with the fuel.
Gar and Rachel reach the hideout, and finds the Kryptonite dust on the floor but no Conner. A broad cast from the police comes in on the still-working radio, saying that a Titan is leading an evacuation.
Donna drives the hummer out of Gotham, with Tim sitting beside her. He looks back at his parents and then considers jumping. Donna sees him and tells him not to even think about it, and Tim insists that he's staying there to fight, and his family made their choices. Tim figures that he had to come back to save Gotham and be the next Robin, and if he dies doing it then so be it. Donna tells Tim that he's not Robin, and she spent her whole life training to be Wonder Girl and there's no guarantee that she can make a difference. She says that Tim has no idea what he's getting into, and Tim insists that he's meant to be the next Robin. Tim asks Donna to give him a chance, and she tells him that his destiny will have to wait.
Conner works on creating the fuel.
Jason walks out to the plaza where he fought Nightwing, shoots his gun into the air, and yells that Red Hood is back and Nightwing is gone, but they're ignoring him. Dick steps up and tells Jason that it's okay, and says that he was in the Pit like Jason and he also came out alive. He asks Jason for his help because he knows how Crane thinks, and it's a chance for Jason to redeem himself. Jason warns that Crane has everything but doesn't know how the villain plans to bring down Gotham. Dick tells Jason to think, and Jason remembers that Crane said something about a plan Batman and Robin stopped years ago.
Dick remembers that years ago Crane sent a poem to Jim Gordon, with clues about how he was going to use explosions to spread his fear toxin. The heroes stopped him, and Bruce put Crane's toxins in storage in the Batcave. Jason figures Crane knows where the weapons are, and Dick says that now they do and they should go. He offers Jason the Red Hood mask, and tells Jason that he'll never be a Titan again, but he can help Dick save Gotham. Jason wonders how he can know Dick won't kill him, and Dick says that now he knows what it's like to die.
Conner puts the completed fuel in the ship, and Blackfire wonders to Starfire what happens if their people don't accept her. Starfire offers to go with her sister, saying Blackfire is her family, but Blackfire refuses her offer, saying it's something she'll have to do on her own. Kind starts the ship and it starts to explode. When Blackfire tells Conner to stop it, he merely glares at her. The ship explodes, knocking Kind and the sisters back.
As night falls, Donna drives the hummer to the outskirts of Gotham. They come to a roadblock, and police cars arrive behind them. Tim tells Donna that if the police see a Titan then they're finished. The policemen walk up and find Jack in the driver's seat. He says that he retired but signed back up when Crane recruited help. He says that Tim, seated next to him, is learning the ropes. Donna is in the back with Stephan and Janet, and listens.
One of the policemen tells Tim to show them what's in the back. He gets out and leads the officer to the back, and Donna slams the door in the officer's face. Jack knocks out the other policeman and takes his gun, shoots at the officers at the roadblock, and takes cover when they shoot back. Donna pulls off a rear door as a shield, tells Tim to follow her lead, and advances into the gunfire.
Fletcher goes back to Barbara's cell with food and opens the door. She's in her wheelchair and uses a hidden escrima stick to knock Fletcher out. Two officers spot and chase her, and as one prepares to shoot, the other tells his partner that Crane wants Barbara alive.
Barbara goes to the Oracle chamber and asks the system to tell her how to bring it back.
Dick and Jason break into the warehouse where Bruce kept his "trophies". They discover that Crane has taken the ampules of toxin and left a book of poems in their place. It has Crane's poem in it, declaring war on Gotham.
At the manor, Crane's hired cops bring in the ampules. He checks one of them and laughs.
