A spare head for a cabbage.

After seeing the superb Joel (2018) at the 26th Manchester Viva! Latin America cinema festival, and relaxing at home with the easy-going Sci-Fi of Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018-both also reviewed) I was in the mood to end the night with a animated short. Having kept this title waiting for the right moment to play it,I got set to finally meet Matylda.

Note:Some spoilers in review:

The plot:

Fearing that her daughter Matylda's head is getting stuffed from everything she is learning, Matylda's mum decides that the best way to sort this out,is to get the spare head of her daughter. Heading to get the head, the mother finds on her return home that Matylda's head has slipped out of hand.

View on the film:

Unlocking Matylda's head to reveal the shelves stacked with new info inside it, co-writer/co-directors Adolf Born/ Jaroslav Doubrava & Milos Macourek browse the pages with adorable pencil sketch animation, with the rough-edge of the designs being drawn with lush floral colours.

Darting along to Iva Janzurova (who has just filmed her 200th screen credit) delivering a chatty narration, the writers playfully mix whimsical Comedy from Matylda's new discovery in education, and delightfully surreal Fantasy exchanging knowledge between the two heads of Matylda.
