Phytoplankton are the foundation of life on earth converting carbon dioxide, that causes global warming, into oxygen that we and other animals need to survive. So more phytoplankton sounds like a good thing. Yet there are huge swaths of ocean where phytoplankton struggle to thrive due to a shortage of iron.
