In 1968, idealistic Italian engineer Giorgio Rosa founded an independent micro nation on a tiny island he built on a platform supported by steel pylons off the coast of Rimini, Italy, outside Italian territorial waters. He named the platform — which had its own bar/restaurant, post office and radio station — the Republic of Rose Island.
This anarchic act is the subject of “Rose Island,” a dramedy rooted in real history marking the first Netflix International Original film out of Italy. The streaming giant worked closely with director Sydney Sibilia and production company Grøenlandia (“The First King”) to shepherd the picture, conceived from the outset for an international audience. The film stems from Netflix’s stepped-up drive under David Kosse, vice president of international film and Teresa Moneo, director of international film, to produce and acquire significant non-English language titles with worldwide appeal.

Though production is on hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Italian industry is mostly holding up, thanks in part to a $145 million government aid package for exhibitors, distributors and producers.
Netflix and Italy’s film commissions have launched a fund to provide short-term emergency support to crews that have been forced to stop working including, but not limited to, Netflix productions. The hope is that shooting can resume by August or September.
Meanwhile, Italy’s film promotion organization, Filmitalia, has launched its annual Italian Screenings market online, staking out a July 21-24 slot. Backed by government body Istituto Luce Cinecittà, the org “is the first of Europe’s roughly 30 film promotion agencies to make a move into the virtual market space,” says Filmitalia chief Carla Cattani, who doubled the Italian fare screened to 40 titles, most of which are world premieres.

With Cannes and Venice both up in the air due to the coronavirus pandemic, Italy’s film promotion org. Filmitalia has teamed up with festival streaming platform Festival Scope Pro to launch its annual Italian Screenings market online in July.
Filmitalia, a unit of Italian national film entity Luce-Cinecittà, “is the first of Europe’s roughly 30 film promotion agencies to make a move into the virtual market space,” says its chief Carla Cattani.
She is organizing this year’s digital screenings — which will run July 21-24 in an expanded format — in tandem with the country’s film exporters’ union Unefa.
The Italian Screenings’ July 21-24 slot is strategic, situated in the calendar a month after the Cannes virtual market — where Italian movies will probably have “low visibility,” Cattani notes — and before Venice, which may or may not take place in early September.

This year’s strong Italian presence at Berlin — a total of nine films in various sections, three of which are in competition — is one of several indicators pointing to an upbeat 2020 for cinema Italiano.
The other positives are that box office is picking up thanks to the Hollywood studios finally releasing more movies day-and-date with the rest of the world in the summer, just as the country’s production pipeline is percolating with a promising mix of new works by masters such as Nanni Moretti and promising up-and-comers like Susanna Nicchiarelli.
Government funding has been increased with more than €400 million ($436 million) allocated for various support schemes, including generous tax incentives for foreign shoots.
The batting average for Italian movies at the local box office, where 2019 admissions were up 14%, is still too low. There were 29 feature films last year that did not even gross much more than €1 million ($1.09 million). Still, the picture could be worse.

Kevin Hart just became a father for the third time in November — but that doesn’t mean he was excited about being a new dad again from the start.
Hart, 38, who was the host of Saturday Night Live this week, revealed during his opening monologue that now that his son Kenzo Kash has been born, he could admit “that I wasn’t excited about having a baby in the beginning.”

Walker Hayes named his new album after his favorite expression: “boom.” But maybe it’s also the sound of a career taking off after 13 years of taxiing the runway.
“It’s just unreal,” Hayes tells People about the album’s debut on Friday. “It’s almost like my team wants to slap me in the face every now and then and be like, ‘Hey, do you get what’s going on? Are you even excited?’ I think what they don’t understand is that it’s just so hard to digest. It’s just taken so long, and I just can’t believe it.

Tim McGraw isn't playing when it comes to his daughters!
Tim and his wife, Faith Hill, have three daughters together -- Audrey, 15, Maggie, 19, and Gracie, 20 -- and while two are grown and on their own, the couple admitted on Thursday's Tonight Show that they're still protective parents. In fact, when their eldest daughter, Gracie, went on her first date with a new guy, Tim did a background check on the potential suitor.
"We put our secret service guys on it, they checked it out, everything's good," he joked, adding that he asked Gracie to bring the guy by the house the day after their date.
"The next morning we're doing a barbecue. I'm in the kitchen and I forget that he's coming," Tim explained. "I have a white apron on and a knife and I'm trimming meat up, so I've got chunks of meat all over this apron, blood everywhere."

There’s Tim. There’s Faith. But right now there’s Tim and Faith, and the couple is everywhere: on an ongoing sold-out world tour, on a new duets album, in a new television documentary, and in a new exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
How could anyone possibly trace back to where country’s most successful and dynamic duo began? Easy. It’s right there in the museum on a streaked mirror with now-faded black scribblings.
“I am gonna be your wife! Yes. Love you so, so much.”
Then, in bigger lettering: “T. I U F.

"The Rest of Our Life" is the second single from the album (following "Speak to a Girl") and was written by Ed Sheeran, Amy Wadge, Johnny McDaid and Steve Mac.
Although the video comes on the country couple's 21st anniversary, McGraw and Hill get into an argument on camera in the Grant Singer-directed project, which was shot in McGraw's home state of Louisiana.

Serbian director Emir Kusturica, once a revered name on the arthouse European scene, is back in the helmer’s chair with On the Milky Road. His return to fiction feature filmmaking comes after a few years spent directing documentaries (Maradona by Kusturica), doing some acting and contributing to omnibus films (Words with God – with his short Our Life nominally serving as inspiration for this one, executive-produced by Guillermo Arriaga).
While his recent works have done little to sustain this, it’s still surprisingly difficult in the world of 2016 to readjust perceptions of Kusturica after his rapturous, wildly energetic early successes. And that constitutes further burden on his latest film – a highly self-indulgent, magical realist fairy tale of profoundly uneven quality.
