I knew the Murderer as soon as.
kristhebass3 August 2022
I do like this series.

Previous complaints about no French accents are ridiculous.

There is nothing worst than fake accents, they didn't do it in Secret Army, Wallander, Maigret, Van De Valk so why do it here?

This was an interesting episode. I knew who the murderer was as soon as they appeared on screen. I've only ever seen him play a bad person so it had to be him, and I was right. Then it didn't take much working out what the connection was for the two murders.

I've noticed this before in other dramas, actors get type cast, just for once I'd like to see the usual nice guy be the killer.

With Endeavour coming to an end hopefully Roger Allam will be making more of these.

A fine end to series one.

Verlaque and Marine investigate two auspicious deaths, the first a young woman, working at a bank, the second an elderly lady with a bad memory.

This was perhaps the best episode of the first series, I really did enjoy this, great mystery, stunning visuals, and a gripping ending, this really did deliver. It's a shame that ITV didn't put this out on its general channel, people really are missing out.

I liked that Sylvie played a bigger part here, she's been something of a bit part player so far.

Nancy Carroll has been so good throughout, she looks so beautiful here, great to see her teamed up with her Father Brown fellow cast member John Light, I think the pair shared some real chemistry here.

One of the murders made sense initially, the other needed explaining, but was worth the wait.

I did chuckle at the scenes of Allam and Carroll in the car, or not, I was reminded of driving scenes from Murder she wrote. That Citroen is so cool, so quirky.

Please let there be a second series, 8/10.

Hope there's a season 2!

This was the best episode yet (even though I guessed who the killer was early on). Lots of tension and red herrings. I love the characters, and I don't even mind that the plot relies on a lot of coincidences.

I wish they would fix the makeup. Everyone, particularly the leads, is always shiny and it look like they're sweating. (There was a nod to menopause in an earlier episode but that doesn't explain why Antoine is always aglow!)

They sure do all spend a lot of time in restaurants drinking wine and coffee yet eating nothing. Is this the norm in France?

The scenery is all so beautiful. Makes me want to take a trip there.

Killer 1960s Music made the Episode.

Who is singing "This Guy's in Love with You" during the closing minutes of episode 1.3? I really thought the music while they were driving in French country side really set off this final episode of Season 1. I am really looking forward to Season 2. I hope Season 2 has more episodes than Season 1.

Fred Friday
DoctorStrabismus15 August 2022
This episode starts off in a far more realistic manner, with clear signs that Fred Thursday has moved on just a bit, and he is at least Fred Friday by now. He strikes a far better balance as the investigating judge working with the police, under the French 'inquisitorial' system of justice. The judge is supposed to be in an overseer role with the police, rather than a leadership role.

It could almost have been a Morse episode, as a diverse range of potential suspects gradually emerges beneath the bright provençale sun, and each gives the investigating judge and police plenty of good reasons to point the finger at them.

And then, following the two pretty weak previous episodes, they only go and spoil this very much better one with a really slack ending, absolutely chock full of plot-holes. So just 6/10 after all that effort.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose!

Warning: Spoilers
In my opinion this is the weakest episode in the series. Having heard that there will be a season 2, i sincerely hope the writers will put in more effort.

This is a straight up who'dun'it. The story plods along, step by step, where Judge Verlaque and Marine are quite oblivious to the clues that Vanier might be dodgy.

However, the end is the worst, seriously ? Vanier is supposed to be a intelligent person.

How does he think this is going to end ? He standing there, totally revealed, as a bigamist, murderer and swindler. His car is disabled, and he has got one shot left in his gun.

In front of numerous armed police.

And he still needs to be "talked down" by Antoine ?

Come on people, you can do better.

The Provence scenery is beautiful though, both the country side and the towns.

Not Fun and Poor Protocol at End

Warning: Spoilers
This episode was not nearly as fun or well written as the others. There was nothing intriguing within this episode. Just a step by step plodding along. At the end when they go into the house with the person they know is the killer instead of arresting him on the spot was beyond stupid.

Which is the Homicidal stalker?
BillontheCorner2 August 2022
It's not unusual for a mystery to produce three different suspects - it gives the detective a chance to find flaws in alibis and rehabilitate the reputations of the innocent suspects. The problem with this episode is that two of the suspects remain at large because they were innocent of this crime, but we now know enough about them to wonder how long it will be before they do commit murder.

Episode 3

Warning: Spoilers
The first series of Murder in Provence ends with Nancy Carroll reuniting with John Light. Better known as Flambeau from Father Brown. Here he plays a charming doctor.

The body of a young woman is found in the town of Eguilles. Later an older woman is killed.

Antoine suspects that the deaths are linked and tries to find out if both women had something or someone in common.

Meanwhile Marine hooks up with a creepy old acquaintance from her past. Her sister Sylvie later disappears.

It is another story that I found to be plodding. Antoine and Marine interrogate various suspects, many of them have something to hide.

Misogyny was a watchward for this episode. Several of the men have issues with women.

I was not sure about the ending where Antoine and Marine put themselves at risk to go and talk to a suspect.

Muddled but just about passable
coltras3531 July 2022
The death of a young woman, who works at a bank, and an elderly lady with a bad memory are investigated by Verlaque and Marine in this average mystery which marred by a muddled story, and it gets more confusing, however, there's some nice locations and it's adequate in passing the time.
