Movie theaters can’t sell tickets if they don’t have a lot of new blockbusters to advertise on their marquees. And the actors and writers strikes that ground Hollywood to a standstill in 2023 left studios with fewer movies to release as 2024 got started. As the biggest exhibitor in the world, AMC Theatres certainly felt the lack of franchise movies and tentpole films as the year kicked off, but the company still managed to beat projections with its quarterly earnings. That was partly thanks to the March release of “Dune: Part Two” and “Kung Fu Panda 4,” popular sequels that helped off-set declining admissions in January and February.
Despite the late breaking entry of some must-see movies, revenues at the the theater chain fell to $951.4 million from $954.4 million in the prior-year quarter. However, net losses for the three-month period ending in March narrowed to $163.5 million, or 62 cents per share. That...

AMC Entertainment Holdings has seen its first-quarter revenues edge down slightly on weaker box office in the wake of the dual Hollywood strikes last year, and its net loss narrow as Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong played in its theaters.
On Wednesday, the parent of AMC Theatres reported overall revenues for the three months to March 31, 2024 hitting $951.4 million, just down from a year-earlier $954.4 million, which came amid a 6 percent overall decline in the first quarter North American box office for Hollywood films, compared to 2023.
The premiere on its screens of titles like Dune: Part Two and Kung Fu Panda 4 in early March helped offset a slow box office start this year in January and February. The net loss at the giant cinema chain came in at $163.5 million, which shrank a year-earlier loss of $235.5 million. Godzilla Minus One proved that even with a limited budget, one can produce an award-winning and top-quality film. Unfortunately, the movie also had a limited theatrical run in selected countries which was quite disappointing to many fans.

Steven Spielberg and Denis Villeneuve are both incredible filmmakers who have shown the world that they are the best in what they do, but like many other directors out there, they have their own techniques and strategies when it comes to helming movies.

There were many things to look forward to when Dune: Part Two finally landed after a bit of a delay. The sequel expanded on the lore and started to escalate the universe well beyond what general audiences could predict. There were even rumblings that Anya Taylor-Joy might have a secret role and fuel would be added to the fire as she walked the red carpet at the premiere dressed in a very desert-appropriate dress. Lo and behold, during the two-hour and forty-six-minute epic, the unborn sister of Paul Atreides, Alia, would come to him in a vision as an adult and the viewers would be greeted with Taylor-Joy’s face.
Taylor-Joy would sit down with Variety to talk about her upcoming film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga when she revealed the story of how the secret cameo came about. As she made her appearance as a pretty significant character, that...

Anya Taylor-Joy makes a very brief appearance in Dune: Part Two, but if and when Denis Villeneuve returns to helm his adaptation of Dune: Messiah, the Furiosa star will have a much more substantial role.
If you haven't seen the movie yet, spoilers follow.
In Part One, we learn that Paul Atreides' mother, the Bene Gesserit Lady Jessica, is pregnant with the late Duke Leto's child. When the Fremen take in the survivors of the Harkonnen massacre, Jessica agrees to become the tribe's new Reverend Mother (she isn't really given a choice) and is "persuaded" to drink the Water of Life (a blue substance that's been extracted from a juvenile sandworm).
This gives Jessica incredible foresight and knowledge of previous generations, while also awakening similar abilities in her unborn daughter, who begins to communicate with and seemingly influence her mother's actions.

After tremendous success with critics and general audiences, the Mad Max franchise is all set to return to the big screens with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the prequel to 2015’s Fury Road. And, as fans must have already come to know by now, the currently raging Hollywood hotshot Anya Taylor-Joy has replaced Charlize Theron for the iconic titular role of the imperator.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
While this decision was previously only accepted by fans because this film would see a younger version of the Furiosa we saw in Fury Road, it feels like Taylor-Joy has not only performed up to the mark but even surpassed many expectations. If anything, fans should brace themselves to be shocked, because Taylor-Joy can make you believe that Theron has returned to the saga!

This article contains spoilers for "Dune: Part Two."
Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two" takes a few departures from Frank Herbert's original novel, perhaps most notably in the omission of Alia Atreides. Alia is Paul's young sister, born while he and his mother Jessica had survived the Harkonnen massacre and were hiding out with the desert-dwelling Fremen. In the book, Alia grows to toddlerhood supernaturally fast and already possesses a spate of eerie Bene Gesserit mental powers. She's also the one who, as a toddler, knifed the evil Baron Harkonnen to death.
Villeneuve figured that shooting in the desert with a toddler would be difficult and uncomfortable for a young actor, so he transformed Alia into a more abstract character. Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) now has psychic conversations with the still-growing fetus inside her womb, while Paul (Timothée Chalamet) has a dreamlike vision of an adult Alia, seemingly contacting him from the future.

Veteran director Denis Villeneuve is known far and wide for directing the iconic Dune franchise by releasing Dune: Part One and Part Two. Featuring iconic actress Anya Taylor-Joy in a cameo in Dune: Part Two, Villeneuve had to complete a certain condition to cast Taylor-Joy in the film.
With Warner Bros. Discovery’s backing, Villeneuve already had a tight schedule to match. During filming, however, the director made the impossible possible by finishing the project on time and getting Anya Taylor-Joy to star in the film!

Theaters are in a slump longer than they should be. The last five weekends averaged about $70 million total, while in 2019, the same five weekends with lower ticket prices averaged $190 million. That means success in VOD revenue is all that more important for studios. Even so, on the two top 10 lists from iTunes (ranking by transactions) and Fandango (by revenue), half the slots are taken by companies other than the usual top five.
Results overall reflect the cutback in releases due to last year’s strikes, some longer windows for bigger-grossing studio releases, and, in most cases, a weaker response to other films that made little theatrical impact. All that made it easy for “Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.), by far the year’s biggest hit, to repeat as #1 on both charts for the third week. And that’s with a higher price than usual.

Challengers failed to repeat as the top film of the box-office weekend as newcomer The Fall Guy easily claimed first place by a margin of $20.4 million. Universal Pictures enjoyed dominance over the box-office weekend top ten as the studio sported three films in the weekend’s list.
Claiming first place was The Fall Guy with $28.5 million, easily besting the second-place film, the re-release of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace which took in $8.1 million for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. This pushed last weekend’s top film, Challengers, to a third place finish where it added $7.6 million, raising its two-week total to $29.5 million for United Artists Releasing. Screen Gems, meanwhile, enjoyed the debut of Tarot in fourth place where it managed to bring in $6.5 million for the studio. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was consequently dropped two spots where it claimed fifth place with $4.5 million over the weekend.

Movies these days are more of a production than a simple story led by a cast. If there is no pomp and circus around it, chances are, it won’t do much business. Even with some really popular names attached to projects, sometimes that is not enough. And Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt starrer The Fall Guy is a prime example of that.

While the big-screen adaptation of The Fall Guy was never expected to open to mega-blockbuster numbers, no one thought the well-reviewed Ryan Gosling movie would stumble out of the gate to this extent. Indeed, Hollywood insiders assumed this had a shot at a $40 million plus opening (we expected about $35 million). Now it looks like David Leitch’s film will only make $28.5 million over what’s widely considered the first weekend of the summer movie season. Last year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 made $110 million in the same frame.
The Fall Guy was never expected to open anywhere near that number. Indeed, it was originally planned as a March release, only to be moved thanks to how empty the release calendar is due to the SAG/WGA strikes from last year. Sex!!! Now that I have your attention, let's talk about "Dune: Part Two" (you can read our review of the bleak blockbuster right here). You may have watched Denis Villeneuve's massive sci-fi epic and come away with a few, uh, Nsfw questions about the Fremen and their ways. Luckily for you, someone went ahead and asked Villeneuve some hard-hitting (and risque!) questions, like: how does sex work on Arrakis, where seemingly every fluid is sacred and in high demand? To his credit, Villeneuve took the questions seriously and didn't shut the interview down. Instead, he seems to have genuinely put some thought into this, suggesting he really has every inch of this world mapped out in his noggin. So if you have questions about kissing and beyond in the world of "Dune," read on.

The upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine is burdened with the mammoth task of reviving the MCU and Ryan Reynolds is trying his best to do that. It is rumored that the film will feature many prominent characters from the earlier Marvel movies as cameos which will induce cheers in the theatres. However, one of the major characters was out of the equation- Cable.

“Hopefully with the Met, since I’ve been away for so many years, maybe this time around I won’t be so stressed,” Zendaya recently told USA Today ahead of her highly anticipated return to the Met Gala on Monday.
The fashion star, currently seen onscreen in Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers, has official duties on fashion’s biggest night as a co-chair alongside Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth. She hasn’t strolled the carpet outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art since May 2019, when she arrived with her longtime stylist Law Roach to celebrate the Camp: Notes on Fashion theme by wearing an illuminated Cinderella gown with puff sleeves by Tommy Hilfiger.
Her fans may be stressed, however, anticipating what Zendaya will wear in making her return to the A-list affair, especially on the heels of Roach’s recent comments to The New York Times. “I haven’t seen Zendaya’s dress,...

The theatrical-only release of "Dune: Part Two" back in March of 2024 was an unequivocal success, both at the box office and within the cultural conversation. Even though the film is now available for digital rental and purchase, it's still playing in movie theaters and is still being talked about, debated over, and memed (the latter being the biggest bellwether for a piece of media's impact in pop culture these days).
As the old saying goes, failure is an orphan while success has many fathers. Did "Dune: Part Two" succeed solely on its own merits? Was it helped by a robust press tour, along with a buzzworthy, unintentionally raunchy popcorn bucket tie-in? Was it the fanbase of the "Dune" franchise that helped boost its popularity? Or — and this is the most pertinent question — had audiences been primed for the next chapter thanks to 2021's "Dune: Part One?"
If the answer to that last question is "Yes,...

Josh Brolin Is More In Love With Cable Than Thanos Reveals Whether He’s Part Of Deadpool & Wolverine Or Not ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Josh Brolin is one of those actors who has played two Marvel characters and that too in the same year. He appeared as Thanos and Cable in 2018. With Deadpool & Wolverine’s release almost around the corner, several speculations have been made on social media. One of them is Brolin’s return to the MCU, as his name is reportedly listed on IMDb as part of the upcoming movie’s cast.
Deadpool 2 and Avengers: Infinity War were released in 2018, and Brolin was an integral part of both the movies. Now, Marvel has finally acquired the rights to the Fox characters, and as a result, Wade Wilson and Logan are coming home. The possibilities for the makers to include the characters in the movie have increased, courtesy of the multiverse concept.

“I haven’t seen Zendaya’s dress,” Law admitted to The New York Times.
He continued, explaining that the dress was still a work in progress at the moment. Why? “We’ve been on two press tours — Dune 2 and Challengers — and doing two Vogue covers. The dress isn’t even made. They won’t fit until Saturday.”
Zendaya delivered so many iconic looks on both promo tours for her recent movies. For Challengers, everything had a tennis theme.

Deadline is reporting on hundreds more layoffs incoming at one of the VFX top firms, Dneg, which is the VFX company behind major blockbusters like Dune: Part Two, Oppenheimer, The Last of Us, and many more. Because of AI?

This weekend marks the official start of the summer movie season. Yeah, I know – it’s still springtime, but if you follow blockbuster movie release dates, you’ll know that May’s always been prime real estate, with many of the biggest money earners of all time coming out in that month. Last year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 kicked off the season with a muscular $118 million opening. Sadly, this year’s first big would-be blockbuster, The Fall Guy, looks like it will only open with about a fraction of that take, with the industry predicting a $35-40 million opening.
That opening would put it right in line with director David Leitch’s last big action flick, Bullet Train, which opened with $30 million on its way to a $103 million North American cume and a $239 million worldwide total. That was considered a more-than-ok number, considering the film only had a budget in the $90 million range.

Movie theater owner Cinemark Holdings reported first-quarter revenue of $572.9 million for the three months ended March 31, down 5 percent from $610.8 million in the prior year.
That beat a Wall Street analysts estimate for overall revenue at $558.2 million. Overall attendance fell to 40.0 million patrons across its global footprint, down from 42.9 million customers in 2023, due to last year’s Hollywood strikes and their impact on the studio movie supply.
Admissions revenue came in at $289.8 million, down 6.8 percent from $311.0 million, and concession revenue also fell 5 percent to $224.2 million from a year-earlier $235.8 million, as food and drink sales were hit by the attendance decline, including in Latin America.
The company reported a net profit of $24.8 million, compared to a loss of $3.1 million in the prior year, though, helped by a gain of $27.7 million from an income tax benefit due mainly to the release of valuation allowances in certain foreign markets. The diluted earnings per share was 19 cents,...

Exclusive: Hundreds more layoffs are incoming at Dune and Oppenheimer VFX firm Dneg.
Deadline is told that the outfit has kicked off a consultation process in at least the UK and Canada, which could see an exodus of around 5% of Dneg’s circa-10,000-strong global workforce. Dneg had not responded to comment requests by press time.
Layoffs are understood to be somewhat concentrated within R&d teams and are a response to the challenged market, which has not eased up since the Hollywood strikes ended and has not improved sufficiently after Dneg brought in a pay offer for staff last year.
In the UK, where sources say the number of layoffs is predicted to be around 100, Bectu boss Philippa Childs said the union is “continuing to do everything we can to support our members who are affected by these redundancies.”

Say hello to sequel season.
That might as well be the nickname for this summer’s slate of potential blockbusters. Over the next four months, Hollywood is rolling out what it hopes will be a winning mix of follow-ups, reboots and spinoffs from tested franchises like “Despicable Me” and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it looks to reinvigorate the shaky movie theater business.
Last summer flipped the script: New properties, such as “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” ruled, while entries in aging series, like “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” and “Mission Impossible 7,” missed the mark. This time out, the tried-and-true may yet prevail. Original offerings like Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt’s action-comedy “The Fall Guy” and Kevin Costner’s Western “Horizon: An American Saga” will attempt to lure audiences. But analysts anticipate that overly familiar brands — “Despicable Me 4,” Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2...

Millions of Dune fans may have missed a subtle yet fascinating fact about the blue sandworm piss before it was unveiled on Joe Rogan’s podcast last month.

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

The past two weekends at the box office have been, in a word, miserable. Yes, "Challengers" won this most recent frame with a $15 million opening, but the total take for the weekend domestically was just over $60 million. Last weekend, when "Abigail" and Guy Ritchie's "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" underperformed, the weekend total was barely above $65 million. When total ticket sales for a weekend are less than what would be a so-so opening weekend for a summer blockbuster, things are dire. Fortunately, there are a couple of bright spots among the darkness.
On its fifth weekend in theaters, "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" pulled in $7.2 million domestically, dropping just 25% from weekend four. It held the number three spot on the charts behind this weekend's newcomers, "Challengers" and "Unsung Hero" ($7.75 million). That was also enough to bring it past the $500 million mark globally. Home viewing charts inspire deja vu: “Anyone but You,” a hit as a PVOD release, just debuted at Netflix. It knocked out Netflix’s expensive “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver” from first place after two weeks, falling to #6.
Similarly, “Dune: Part Two” returned for its second week as #1 at both iTunes (ranking by transactions) and Fandango (which calculates by revenue).
The “Dune” sequel fended off challenges by two recent theatrical releases. Dev Patel’s “Monkey Man” (Universal), once intended as a Netflix original, is #2 at iTunes, third at Fandango. The family-oriented “Arthur the King” (Lionsgate) took second at Fandango, but only #6 at iTunes. Both initially are available to rent for 48 hours for $19.99.
Two new home-play debuts also made top 10 lists. “Cash Out” (Saban) is #9 at iTunes, renting at $6.99; starring John Travolta, the critically reviled title may be getting as much attention for its little-known director Ives. That’s...

Four years after Covid-19 upended the world, we're all still just scrambling to catch up. So many industries are having a rough go of it, and Hollywood is no exception. Even the almighty Marvel Studios has fallen on hard times, with several Marvel Cinematic Universe films seeing lower-than-expected returns at the box office. That downward trend culminated with last year's "The Marvels" becoming the lowest-grossing MCU movie ever. How dire was it? The follow-up to the billion-dollar smash-hit that was 2019's "Captain Marvel" made less than DC's notorious "Green Lantern" from 2011, the first Nicolas Cage "Ghost Rider" movie, and the massive flop that was Fox's X-Men pic "Dark Phoenix." Just let that sink in for a minute.
So, what gives? Could it be that Disney saturating the market with MCU media, with an emphasis on quantity over quality, hurt the brand? Or that the continuing impact of the pandemic on...

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “Challengers.”]
Zendaya is admitting that yes, the ending of “Challengers” can be considered “confusing,” especially since her own mother had an entirely different take on it than she did.
The actress told New York Times journalist Kyle Buchanan that it makes sense why the ambiguous final scene can be “confusing” for audiences.
“My mom read the ending so different[ly]. My mom is like, ‘She’s pissed because they realize that they don’t need her anymore,'” Zendaya said in an interview excerpt tweeted by Buchanan. “I was like, ‘But I smile a little bit at the end!'”
The final sequence captures Tashi (Zendaya) watching as her almost-retired husband Art (Mike Faist) and his former best friend Patrick (Josh O’Connor) embrace on the tennis court without a winner being announced. If there was any doubt at all that Zendaya is one of her generation's biggest A-list stars, this past weekend just squashed it. The actress had a bunch of big hits to her name, including the most recent "Spider-Man" trilogy, but she had yet to have the opportunity to open an original movie with her as the central star. Well, she did just that over the weekend as the R-rated, original tennis drama "Challengers" hit theaters and topped the box office with a $15 million take domestically. Very few non-horror, original movies have broken through in the pandemic era big enough to take the number one spot on the charts. That was just the tip of the iceberg.
While Zendaya's latest was topping the charts, "Dune: Part Two" still found itself in the top ten in its ninth weekend of release. Director Dennis Villeneuve's sequel to 2021's "Dune" added $1.9 million to its ever-growing total domestically,...

After the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the film industry is still trying to find its sea legs in 2024. While the box office has been lagging, and there’s been no “Super Mario Bros,” “Barbie,” or “Oppenheimer” so far this year, to be fair, most of those hits didn’t arrive until the summer (minus the Nintendo adaptation). While it’s been a relatively slow year at the domestic box office, there have been hits in “Dune: Part Two” and “Godzilla x Kong,”
And, while the movie industry seemingly slowed down production last year because of said strikes, there’s absolutely no lack of content this year.

Customers will reportedly be able to pay to add a non-household member to their Max account, similar to Netflix.
It seemed like a foregone conclusion that Max would roll out restrictions against sharing passwords at some point. After all, the streamer is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, whose CEO David Zaslav has made it abundantly clear throughout his tenure that no opportunity to cut costs or boost revenues will be ignored. A new report from Lucas Shaw and Robert Golum of Bloomberg indicates that the company’s lack of action on password-sharing rules to this point is likely to change in 2024 and that a crackdown on such viewing habits is likely to come before the end of the year.
Key Details: Max’s password-sharing crackdown could begin as early as this fall. Viewers will be able to pay less than the cost of an ad-supported Max subscription to add a sharer to their account.

Whatever one thinks of the highly controversial TV series Euphoria, there’s one thing no one can deny. No show of this era has been a better launching point for the careers of young movie stars. Zendaya is currently enjoying huge success on the big screen, thanks to Dune: Part Two and Challengers, while Sydney Sweeney is just on the other side of a rare rom-com box office success with Anyone But You and has also just produced and starred in the excellent horror flick Immaculate. Jacob Elordi received a bit of praise for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in the Sofia Coppola film Priscilla last year and will next play Frankenstein’s Monster for Guillermo del Toro.
Next up is Hunter Schafer, who is set to splatter the screen in blood with the very creepy-looking horror film Cuckoo. This isn’t her first film role, of course. The young...

“Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In,” a Hong Kong-produced action thriller, took the top spot at the mainland China box office over the latest weekend. But it was a quiet session and came ahead of a welter of new releases targeting the May Day public holiday.
The film, which is among those that have a Wednesday (May 1) official release date, earned $5.5 million (RMB38.9 million) between Friday and Sunday, according to data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway.
The nationwide weekend total was a slender $18.7 million. That was the quietest theatrical weekend in China since the end of the country’s official anti-covid policies in December 2022.
Directed by the prolific Soi Cheang, “Twilight” stars the veteran martial arts star Sammo Hung and actor-producer Louis Koo in a tale of a youngster who stumbles his way into Kowloon’s notorious Walled City and discovers a new kind of order within its seemingly criminal chaos.

After two weeks atop the box-office weekend, Civil War was pushed from the number one spot (and then some) and replaced by Challengers which took first place by a margin of $7.2 million.
In its first weekend of release, the United Artists Releasing product starring Zendaya, Challengers debuted in first place with a total of $15.0 million. This was enough to easily best second-place finisher Unsung Hero which debuted with a total of $7.8 million earned for Lionsgate Films. Meanwhile, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire held its ground at number three where it added $7.2 million over its fifth weekend in release to bring its overall total for Warner Bros. to $181.7 million. All of this pushed last weekend’s top film, Civil War, to fourth place where it took in $7.0 million for A24, giving the film a three-week total of $56.2 million. Also falling three spots was Universal Pictures’ Abigail which dropped from second...

After altering his voice to play the king of rock and roll in "Elvis," Austin Butler made a dramatic shift by portraying the heartless Harkonnen warrior Feyd-Rautha in "Dune: Part Two." It's a choice that worked out well, as even though the star's latest performance also came with an on-screen voice that demands further examination, Butler proved he was just as adept at playing cruel and cunning as he was at transforming into iconic musical figures of the 20th century.
The nephew of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, Feyd-Rautha was a big part of Frank Herbert's 1965 novel on which the "Dune" films are based. In the book, protagonist Paul Atreides (played by Timothée Chalamet in the modern films) returns to the capital of Arrakis and faces off against Feyd-Rautha in a final battle — one which was brought to life for the big screen by director Denis Villeneuve and his production team for "Dune: Part Two.

Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” (Amazon MGM) nearly doubled any other gross in its opening weekend, taking an easy #1 with an estimated $15 million. That’s respectable for the Zendaya-starring erotic tennis drama.
However, another week with this level of a #1 film isn’t what theaters need. After a month of intriguing new releases, none of them are likely to gross as much as $75 million in the U.S./Canada. Theaters faced a double burden — too few films released, and too few perform — but May could be different: It starts the summer season next week with “The Fall Guy” (Universal).
“Challengers” was not an automatic sell. It has Zendaya and excellent reviews (83 Metacritic score). Recent R-rated, sexually charged dramas are unusual these days. “Saltburn,” also from Amazon MGM, grossed $11 million in its release — $4 million less than the “Challengers” opening. “No Hard Feelings” with Jennifer Lawrence had the same opening gross last summer.
