I don’t know what kind of demo reel Tim Miller’s people have circulating around Hollywood, but the dude is still picking up film projects left and right — and all of this while still not having directed a single movie. But hey, that’s Hollywood for ya. Get the right people to sell you, and all the studios come calling. All you really need is one studio to start the ball rolling and suddenly everyone wants in on it. After attaching himself as director on “Deadpool”, before becoming attached to another comic book movie called “Gravel”, and just for good measure, taking on a movie based on the Joe Haldeman novella “Seasons”, Tim Miller has now added a second sci-fi project called “Artemis” to his plate. “Artemis” is from 20th Century Fox, with Andrew Lobel scripting and John Davis doing producing duties. Described as “a contained action thriller set...

For a guy who has never directed a feature-length film, former visual effects man Tim Miller sure is getting a lot of Hollywood love. The would-be director of Ryan Reynolds “Deadpool” (no idea where that film is at the moment, and I doubt if anyone in Hollywood knows, including would-be star Ryan Reynolds) had already previously landed a new directing gig on the comic book “Gravel”. Now he’s got himself attached to direct another movie — an adaptation of Joe Haldeman’s sci-fi short story “Seasons”. Based on “Seasons”, a short story in “The Forever War” author Joe Haldeman’s 1985 collection “Dealing In Futures”, the movie would focus on “an anthropological expedition to a planet with sentient humanoids that goes horribly awry.” Cause obviously an anthropological expedition to a planet with sentient humanoids that goes perfectly perfect would just be kinda lame. Sony Pictures acquired rights to the story, and has set Miller to direct,...

Exclusive: Sony Pictures has acquired the Joe Haldeman science fiction novella Seasons, and will develop it for Michael De Luca to produce and Tim Miller to direct. Sebastian Gutierrez has been set to write the screenplay. The deal was made by Columbia Pictures president Doug Belgrad and production president Hannah Minghella, and Sam Dickerman will oversee it. Gutierrez’s scripting credits include Snakes On A Plane and Gothika, and he just helmed Hotel Noir. Alissa Phillips will be exec producer. The novella, which is part of the 1985 Haldeman short story collection Dealing In Futures, focuses on an anthropological expedition to a planet with sentient humanoids that goes horribly awry. Haldeman’s science fiction novels include The Forever War. This seems like the right visual tapestry for Miller, the visual effects wiz from Blur Studio who hasn’t yet directed a feature but is attached to several big-scale films that include...

Tim Miller is attached to direct an adaptation of Joe Haldeman's short sci-fi tale, Seasons , Deadline reports. The tale, collected in the author's anthology "Dealing in Futures," follows an ethnographic expedition to an alien world that winds up going terribly wrong. Although Miller has not yet made his directorial debut, he remains attached to 20th Century Fox's adaptation of the Marvel Comics character Deadpool and Warner Bros. Pictures' adaptation of Warren Ellis' Gravel . Set up at Sony, Seasons will be drafted by Sebastian Gutierrez and produced by Michael De Luca with Alissa Phillips executive producing. Haldeman is best known for his Vietnam War allegory The Forever War . That novel is planned for a feature adaptation with Ridley Scott attached to helm.

That Guillermo del Toro is quite the busy man. He was at the 2012 New York Comic Con and had a lot to talk about, from the Pacific Rim movie to a new graphic novel tie in and more. First, check out the very cool new poster by Raul Monge for Pacific Rim, del Toro’s monsters vs robots movie that’s coming out Summer 2013:
ComicBookMovie.com reports that del Toro said this about the poster:
Raúl is one of my top concept designers. The idea with this particular piece was to emulate an old WWII propaganda poster/flyer that went along with the world we were creating. It symbolizes rationing – voluntary work force, no guts, no glory kind of heroism.
And here’s the synopsis to refresh your recollection:

Exclusive: Fox has put in development Gun Machine, a drama based on the upcoming novel of the same name by top comic book writer Warren Ellis. The TV series adaptation, a thriller about a beleaguered New York City detective who stumbles upon a cache of hundreds of guns that trace back to a wide array of seemingly unrelated unsolved murders, will be written by Trauma creator Dario Scardapane and produced by 20th Century Fox TV and studio-based Chernin Entertainment. Chernin and the studio made an offer on Gun Machine, which will be published in January by Mulholland Books, sight unseen. “Chernin and Fox pursued Gun Machine with great passion and intelligence, and I couldn’t be happier to be making this show with them,” Ellis said. He will executive produce the potential TV series with Scardapane, Peter Chernin and Katherine Pope. Ellis’ graphic novel Red was turned into a successful...

I’ve long believed Warren Ellis is a crime-fiction writer at heart. The first series of Wolfskin was a clear example of sword-and-sorcery comics, but had that distinct Yojimbo/Fistful of Dollars feel, a dyed-in-the-wool crook playing both sides. Comics like Aetheric Mechanics and Captain Swing are solid steampunk works, yet revolve around cops-and-robbers shenanigans. One of the driving tenets of our work here at Criminal Complex is that any good story is going to have a vital aspect of crime fiction in there, even if it’s a small one, and the oeuvre of Warren Ellis is about as nearly perfect an example of that as I can find.
But what of the standard detective story? Good, old-fashioned, book-‘em-Dano procedurals? Those may not have the flash-and-bang, the gee-whiz of Ellis’s Doktor Sleepless or Gravel, but they are still a very important aspect of the man’s body of work.

Legendary Pictures, whom we just told you the other day had hired director Tim Miller (Deadpool) to helm the big-screen adaptation of the Warren Ellis comic book series Gravel has added yet another project to its future slate, with the acquisition of Martin Helgeland‘s fantasy spec screenplay Slayer
THR reports that Helgeland, the son of veteran screenwriter Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential, Man on Fire) penned the modern-day story about a young doctor whose estranged father dies and he finds out the old man was a dragon and creature slayer. The doctor must become a slayer too.
No production or release date has been set for Slayer.

Way back in 2009, we brought you the news when Legendary Pictures began development on a feature adaptation of the Warren Ellis comic book series, Gravel. Which is being produced by Rick Alexander, and Warren Ellis is serving as both executive producer and penning the screenplay.
Now, Deadline reports that Tim Miller, who was hired by 20th Century Fox last year to helm the big-screen adaptation of Deadpool has been hired to direct Ellis’ Gravel, which revolves around William Gravel, a soldier in the British S.A.S. who uses his skills in dark magic to moonlight and battle supernatural beings for clients in order to make some extra cash.

Good news, "Gravel" fans. The adaptation of the comic book created by Warren Ellis has finally got its director in the form of "Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" opening credits director/VFX extraordinaire Tim Miller. And Ellis is pretty happy about that.
Deadline broke the news about Miller, adding that he is also currently attached to helm Fox's "Deadpool" adaptation. But Ellis later took to his website to say how happy he is that his "old friend" got the directing gig.
"I’ve known Tim for years. This is basically the best news," Ellis wrote. "I’m just leaving this here, and saying that I’m happy, and will doubtless expand on it all at a later date."
Ellis wanted to clarify that, even though he's not writing the script for the film, he's still happy with the current status of "Gravel."
"Note that this film has writers who aren’t me.

Does this mean “Deadpool” is still in play? Maybe… Previously attached to direct Ryan Reynolds in what would have been a rollicking good time in “Deadpool”, VFX man Tim Miller (he’s worked on both of Bryan Singer’s “X-Men” movies) has now found himself taking over another comic book movie called “Gravel”, this one based on the Warren Ellis comic book of the same name. “Gravel” will follow a man name William Gravel, a soldier in the British S.A.S. who uses his skills in dark magic to moonlight and battle supernatural beings for clients in order to make some extra cash. Hey, guy’s gotta pay the mortgage, you know. No word on what this means for “Deadpool”, if anything. Despite the fact that the film was a fantastic thriller all around, one of the finer points of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo came from the dark and twisted opening credit sequence, reminiscent of some kind of gothic James Bond opening. The man behind that sequence is Tim Miller and his Blur Studio CG animation studio, a company primarily known for video game cinematics. Previously, Miller had been attached to direct X-Men Origins: Deadpool in April, but nothing new on the project has surfaced since then. Tim Miller has yet to direct a feature film, but he's already more than made a name for himself in the right circles around Hollywood. Nominated for an Oscar back in 2005 for his animated short "Gopher Broke" (excellent title, right?), Miller has since gone on to garner a reputation for his VFX work through his CG animation house, Blur Studio. The company provided the special effects on "Avatar" and the cherry on the top for Miller will surely have been earning Mvp status on "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" remake for his role as Creative Director on that crazy title sequence -- one of the few truly original strands of David Fincher's movie. Visually, at the very least, Tim Miller looks like a force to be reckoned with.
Last year he was handed the reins of the long-gestating "Deadpool" movie, with Ryan Reynolds still attached to play the "merc with a mouth.

I couldn't stop raving about David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo for a few months. And while I loved the whole film, top to bottom, it's the brilliant title sequence that gets your attention and draws you in. So it's no surprise to hear that its creator, Tim Miller, has landed a director's gig.
According to Deadline, Miller will take the helm on Gravel, an adaptation by Legendary Pictures of a Warren Ellis title about a British S.A.S. solider who wields deadly magic and battles hordes of demons by night. So, yeah, the potential is there for this to be one kickass experience.
Legendary will produce the project with Rick Alexander with Ellis as executive producer. Oliver Butcher and Stephen Cornwell are writing the script.
And for those of you who've not yet seen Miller's incredible work in the Fincher film - shame on you!

There's been some talk about the death of Comic-Con as an epicenter of the buzz economy. Major studios aren't spending the money and logistical capital to get directors, casts and that all-important shwag to San Diego this year. And, if you're a lifelong comics fan like me and my colleague Matt Singer, then there's some ambivalence at seeing the retreat of Hollywood powers-that-be who came to Comic-Con International to mine geek enthusiasm for their marketing efforts. On one hand, studios and stars showing up to court fanboys smells like nerd victory. But, when the flip side is a movie that underperforms or gets everything wrong about, say, Judge Dredd, all that wooing leaves a fanboy feeling cheap and used.
Nevertheless, if you want to capture the hearts of a hardcore nerd fanbase, Comic-Con's still the beating heart of disproportionately passionate pop culture enthusiasm. If you want to shore up the...

The news broke back in April that Robert Redford would be playing former baseball player and executive Branch Rickey in an upcoming movie from L.A. Confidential co-writer Brian Helgeland. While that project is very much still alive, a press release from Legendary Pictures indicates that the focus has shifted to Rickey‘s friend, Jackie Robinson.
Robinson is, as most people know, the first black athlete to ever legally play in the Mlb. Even though he’s considered a great player, his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers is best known for the many benchmarks it set in the civil rights movement, both on and off the baseball field. Those huge accomplishments are reason enough to make the movie about him. While it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of Rickey, that’s not the story that people necessarily want to hear. Redford was set to play Brooklyn Dodgers General Manager Branch Rickey in the film that would focus on Rickey and Robinson's relationship. Avatar Press has announced a new ongoing Gravel title. According to Comic Book Resources, the monthly Gravel: Combat Magician series will be written by Mike Wolfer, who was artist on the Warren Ellis-penned miniseries that introduced the character, before becoming co-writer on the previous ongoing title. "We're scaling back from the giant magic stuff," said Avatar editor-in-chief William Christensen during the Avatar panel at C2E2. "There's going to be a lot more (more)...

As Red arrives on DVD and Blu-ray, we caught up with the original comic book’s writer Warren Ellis about its big screen adaptation, Twitter, and much more...
Less than five minutes before my interview slot with writer Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan, Crooked Little Vein, Freakangels, among many others), the following Twitter update appeared, from the man himself: "slowly losing my mind doing phone interviews for the UK release of the Red DVD. poor journos."
I reassured myself with the fact that, as it was a phoner, there was little chance of Ellis, whose public persona is best described as 'cantankerous old sod', causing me any physical harm.
And, thankfully, even the emotional trauma was minimal.
Read on for the interview, which starts with Red, the 'old folks with guns' action film starring Bruce Willis and Helen Mirren, adapted from Ellis and Cully Hamner's comic book, and subsequently touches on Ellis' online doings,...

On The Set
Cully got to visit the set in warm and wonderful New Orleans. They liked Cully. Cully's a clever artist what draws the pretty pictures. Me? I got sent to Toronto in the middle of their worst winter in years. They were building shelters for the homeless out of frozen hipsters on Yonge Street, and my hotel was on full-on ice-zombie lockdown.
I'm not fond of Toronto, and I hope that when my friend Steve Murray becomes Mayor of that benighted town, the executions are both rapid and significant.

Last year we told you that Legendary Pictures was developing a feature adaptation of the Warren Ellis comic book series, Gravel. Rick Alexander is producing the film and Warren Ellis is serving as both executive producer and penning the screenplay.
Ellis recently told MTV,
“I’m halfway through [Gravel] right now. I’m actually writing a new William Gravel story. It’s a horror-action thing in the whole combat magician mode of those books.”
Avatar Press publishes the ongoing series, which blends espionage and dark fantasy in tracking the modern-day exploits of British “combat magician” William Gravel. Ellis (Planetary) first introduced the character in a 1999 limited series of graphic novels entitled Strange Kiss.

Hollywood has been all up in Warren Ellis’ business lately. The creator of the comics like “Transmetropolitan” and “Planetary” has been busy. His three-issue mini-series “Red”, co-created with Cully Hamner, is a soon to be released movie with a big-name cast that includes Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, and John Malcovich, among other luminaries. He sat down with MTV and gave an update on “Gravel”, another one of his projects that is being adapted to the big screen. I’m halfway through ['Gravel'] right now. . . I’m actually writing a new William Gravel story. It’s a horror-action thing in the whole combat-magician mode of those books. While I haven’t read “Gravel”, I am a fan of Ellis. This time around he is taking a more active role in the development and production. In addition to writing the script, he is going to serve as executive producer for Legendary Pictures.

During this year's Comic-Con in San Diego, I had the chance to sit down with "Red" creators Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner to discuss the upcoming film based on their comic book series, as well as various other projects each creator has in the works. Among those projects is "Gravel," the upcoming film based on Ellis' comic with artist Mike Wolfer, published by Avatar Press.
Announced back in October, the "Gravel" movie will get a first draft of its screenplay by Ellis himself, who will also serve as executive producer on the film for "Superman Returns" studio Legendary Pictures. The celebrated writer offered MTV News a brief update on the status of the film, as well as that of "Global Frequency," a television series based on one of his popular comics.

Does the lack of ambient tracks on Lodger bother anyone else? Obviously after the brilliance of Low and “Heroes” the Eno/Bowie collaboration was starting to wane on Lodger, but the lack of ambient tracks makes it feel more like another transition record a la Young Americans to Station to Station. Except this time it’d be a transition to Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), which isn’t very similar to Lodger, from what I remember.

The adaptation of Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner’s “Red” could be adding some additional Hollywood star power to its already impressive cast with Julian McMahon, Ernest Borgnine, Richard Dreyfuss and Brian Cox.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, McMahon would portray the Vice President who is at the center of the conspiracy to kill a former CIA agent (played by Bruce Willis). Borgnine would be the keeper of the CIA’s darkest secrets while Dreyfuss is up for the role of a wealthy man who made his fortune on government contracts. Cox would be a former Cold War spy and a rival to Willis’ character.
Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, John C. Reilly and Mary-Louise Parker have already been cast in “Red” or are also in negotiations to sign up.

From Splash Page: Since his comic book debut in 1990, Warren Ellis has been one of the most prolific writers in the comic industry with dozens of original creations in addition to several books for Marvel and DC.
Following the recent announcement that “Black Summer” was optioned by Vigilante Entertainment in addition to the upcoming film adaptations of his “Red” and “Gravel” series, it seems clear that Ellis has become an in-demand comic creator in Hollywood.
With an eye toward more of Ellis' work finding its way to the big (or small) screen, here are five of his projects that would also make excellent films or TV series.

"Walk Hard" star John C. Reilly and Mary-Louise Parker ("Weeds") are reportedly in negotiations to join the cast of “Red”, an adaptation of Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner’s miniseries created in 2003 for Wildstorm.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Reilly would portray a retired CIA agent who is paranoid that everyone is out to kill him while Parker would play a federal pension worker who is romantically involved with Bruce Willis’ lead character and becomes entangled in his struggle to evade the high-tech assassins out to kill him. Morgan Freeman is also attached to play a leading role.
“Red” appears to be picking up steam as it heads in front of the cameras in January. Earlier this week, it was announced that Helen Mirren has been cast in a role rumored to be the former handler of Willis’ character. The film is also tentatively scheduled to be released in November...

Vigilante Entertainment has optioned Warren Ellis and Juan Jose Ryp’s comic book series “Black Summer” with Ryne Pearson ("Knowing") onboard to adapt the script.
Originally published in 2007 as a seven issue miniseries by Avatar Press, “Black Summer” chronicles the rise and fall of a superhero team called the Seven Guns—composed of scientist-adventurers who modified their bodies to gain powers—in the wake of one member's decision to kill the President of the United States and create a better government.
According to Variety, Vigilante Entertainment is a new company formed by Hicham Benkirane, the former head of audiovisual development at French comic book publisher Humanoids.
Despite leaving Humanoids, Benkirane has retained the film rights to a few of the titles he developed there—including "The Book of Jack" and "Fragile"—while also pursing other projects to adapt.
This latest deal continues to cement Ellis’ status as a rising star in Hollywood.

Comic writer extraordinaire Warren Ellis must be a hot thing in Hollywood at the moment because yet another comic of his has been optioned for a film, and this time it's Black Summer, an 8 issue mini series he wrote for Avatar Comics that ran from May 2007 to July 2008. Pre-production has already started on an adaptation of Red starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and now Helen Mirren, his comics Ocean and Gravel (as previously reported) are currently in development, he's writing a King Arthur-type film script and he's also writing an anime series for Marvel starring Wolverine and another with Iron Man. And now yesterday Variety reported that Vigilante Entertainment has optioned his Black Summer series with Ryne Pearson (Knowing) adapting.

The screen rights to Warren Ellis' comic book Black Summer, published by Avatar Press two years ago, have been picked up by Vigilante Entertainment.
The British comic book writer is on a roll lately, having several of his creations either optioned (like Gravel) or about to start filming (like Red). This latest one is set in the superhero genre and follows a team of heroes called the Seven Guns. After using science to juice up their bodies so that they can fight crime, the team discovers that their city's police and government is riddled with corruption and its own criminal element. Comics legend Warren Ellis is all over Hollywood these days. He has Red in development at Summit, Gravel was just recently optioned by the top-notch crew at Legendary Pictures, and Ocean is in the works with Hollywood Gang, for whom Ellis is also penning a King Arthur script. Now Variety reports that Ellis' miniseries Black Summer has been optioned by the fledgling banner Vigilante Entertainment. Ryne Pearson is set to adapt it for the big screen.
Black Summer kicked off in 2007, and walks some familiar Watchmen ground as it examines the darker implications of vigilante heroes. It centers around a superhero team called the Seven Guns, a group of ordinary humans who have willingly undergone severe surgery to become superhuman vigilantes. They take to the streets of a West Coast city to battle a corrupt city government, its equally sleazy police force, and greedy private security forces. But by the time we meet them,...
