Zircons contain impurities from the time of its formation. Glasses formed when a meteor hits a planet trapping gasses from the planet. Cosmic rays alter the chemistry of meteors traveling through space. Thanks to chemical analyses by the Viking Mars lander the ratios of impurities in meteors found on earth have enable scientists to identify several as coming from Mars including when the rocks initially formed and how long they traveled in space.
