TV History in the making!!! Masterful Finale for a Masterful Season.
EddyTheMartian00713 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Oh my lord, I don't know how they can keep one upping themselves! This is on its way to be one of the best TV shows ever. Just when you think you know where it's going it pulls the rug under you. Absolutely astonishing performances. This is looking to join the all time greats. Best ongoing TV show right now. I was literally jumping from excitement while watching. I can't believe they somehow matched the season 2 finale. This is truly something special, it all came together so wonderfully, I feel like i'm watching TV history right now.

Kendall, unexpectedly, was back so soon, walking in on a very prophetic game of monopoly, after that crazy ending last episode. All these water scenes are symbolic in some way, and I thought it was going to be his resurrection, but maybe it wasn't as simple as we thought. In the beginning of the season we see that Kendall was trying to bathe in the bathtub but it was empty, like a false cleanse. Compare this to the beginning of Season 2 where he actually bathed in a pool. In Season 2 Kendall actually seems to win, but in this season he doesn't. Meanwhile this episode he got his true cleansing completely dry in the dusty ground with his siblings. Is there more to this? We'll see.

So much stuff happened this episode. Connor finally stood up for himself in a great scene where he shows he really is the eldest sibling. It's kind of a running joke he's always forgotten so I thought it was great he stood up for himself. Really been loving more Connor this season. Good for him getting married, though with the way relationships work in Succession... not sure it's going to end well. Especially as we see later in this episode. But he's in an interesting position for next season being the only Roy sibling not to go against his dad.

Greg has been showing his darker side recently giving up his relationship with Comfry for the Duchess (I think that was her title?) cause that gives him more potential for power, wow... I think we really dug deeper into the characters here. I found it really funny when in the end he asked for his own little Greg's. Remember when Tom was unraveling from the possibility of prison and told Greg about Neros and Sporos? All the pieces were there from the start. I think we're seeing his further descent into the corruption of the Roy family, and he'll probably become one of the most despicable characters by the end of it.

Last episode gave us a lot to chew on, especially with their mother, which had a surprise moment this episode. The only possible criticism I could think about this season is that some of the side characters felt a bit underused, like Kendall's kids are kind of an after thought, which I suppose makes sense for the character, but we could've gotten more with them, and I would've liked some more Stewy for example. At least we got a new great one as Alexander Skarsgard was a great addition to the cast, loved how he played Waystar, for a second I thought Kendall had a deal with him. He had an excellent scene with Logan where we see just how competent he is and planting the seed for Logan's betrayal towards his kids, we see how Logan respects Mattson more than he'll ever respect his children. I hope to see more of him next season. There seems to be a lot of deleted scenes too from the trailers and BTS stuff we've heard or seen. I hope to see some of these scenes eventually, but I digress.

Then we had the confession scene from Kendall, man Jeremy Strong can't keep getting away with it, stealing all the awards from all the other actors. The siblings finally coming together, being truthful and truly nicer to each other, with that haunting but brilliant dark humor, the wonderful exploration of language and communication that makes Succession so great. For once there's no deception, I love how they found it hard to believe, just the siblings trying to be real to each other for once, standing together. What a great shot too, supporting each other in a triangle formation, only for that formation to be destroyed in a later shot.

Honesty at this point I was thinking there's no way it's actually happening, they're finally going to stay true to the show's title?! It almost seemed too easy right? And BAM! Of course it was. They walked into their parents shagging. Brian Cox as Logan was legendary in this scene, "You're playing toy soldiers!" Mocking Shiv was funny yet deeply painful as I personally related to it, and then the the final straw revealing even their mother betrayed them. I honestly did not expect this ending, I didn't think they'd succeed either, but the way it was handled was just so exciting and tense. Easily one of the most memorable TV twists in a while! All the actors gave it their all. Logan emphasizing that he won, like this is a game to him. Like was mentioned in Season 1, he's so jealous what he's given his kids, he wants them to make their "own pile." The build up with these last 3 episodes has been insane, making for the best run of episodes in the show yet! It all came together.

Oh my lord Tom... he did it. He actually did it. There's some brilliant irony at play here. When Roman asks Logan for love, Logan reacts as expected, absolutely baffled, and ends with a classic "F OFF." Love never worked on Logan, but you know on who love would've worked on? Tom. He wanted was Shiv's love, and because of Shiv's actions in the previous seasons with their painful rocky relationship, in the moment of truth Tom gave up his own wife to get himself at the top, and all Shiv had to do to stop this was give Tom the love that she couldn't get from her dad. Wow, just wow... He even got Greg with him! Tom warned us too, he told Kendall he'd bet on Logan because he's never seen him be screwed like Kendall always is. Tom even called the lawyer since episode 3! Also does that mean Tom sent the donuts?! Kieran Culkin really got his moment to shine here acting wise, you could tell the pain with his popping forehead vein. The fact that Roman finally stood up for his siblings when before he'd always retreat back to father, each season has had the siblings mess up their shot at succession, season 1 was Kendall, 2 was Shiv, and now 3 was Roman, which makes me wonder if maybe 4 will be Connor's chance. "You have my word." Logan says. Was he really giving Roman a chance, could he be trusted for once?! That's what makes this so impactful.

The best part of the season is how it all comes together in the form of honesty, and the lack of proper communication between the characters because of the way they were raised. Succession has always been interested in the exploration of language, communication, and our struggles with it in the modern day. The characters can never take something truthfully because they've been raised in a world filled with deception and manipulation. All the characters hear each other, but they're not listening, because if they would, they would've known where this is going. Kendall sang the song about honesty for a reason. Remember when Gerri previously told Roman to look out for how his choices serve his position? She went for her interests. Tom literally told Kendall he'd bet on Logan. Even their mother talked about changing the divorce arrangement in front of Shiv and she didn't notice! If they would've listened to Kendall in episode 2 they could've won, but now it's too late. All they had to do was listen, not just hear. I wonder if this is connected to the plot in Season 2 changing the tagline from "We're listening" to "We here for you." It took Kendall almost dying for them to finally listen to him. A lot of people were complaining about the middle of the season, how it was slower, going nowhere, but I always knew it would all fit together in the end, and it did. I'm sure there are far more details I missed that parallel and all build up to this amazing episode. This Is just so well structured and brilliantly handled. That's what you get when the writers plan out everything in advanced. I have no idea where they're going next, but I have full trust in the writers. I feel like looking back on the show I'll appreciate it even more. Ending on that final shot of Tom holding Shiv completely flipping their power dynamic was just perfect and haunting.

Thank you Jesse Armstrong, your writers team, the director, the amazing cast, the crew, HBO, everyone for giving us another masterpiece of a TV show. Already in my top 10 with just 3 seasons. This season and episode were all timers. Let's not forget to praise Nicholas Britell's amazing music, and the cinematography which deserves more praise. I've been watching the Dexter revival as well soon after these episodes since they air at the same time, and the gap in quality isn't even funny. The best episode of that season so far still isn't as good as the weakest episode of this season. I like that show, I don't want to bash it, but it just shows how Succession is on a whole other level than almost anything on right now. Only other show that is close to it currently for me is Better Call Saul, but even that has now been surpassed by Succession for me. Honestly, I can even see Succession making my Top 5 in the future, it's just become one of my favorite shows so quickly, and it's easily the best show on TV we've had in years. This episode is now at a 9.9/10, and it's totally deserved. It's very close to becoming HBO's new holy Trinity among The Sopranos and The Wire, I just cannot believe this. I witnessed a masterpiece in the making live on TV, what an experience.

This Season was not About the Kids

Warning: Spoilers
This was Tom's season. From his fear and depression of going to jail to playing his cards with Logan and his ultimate betrayal of Shiv that is incredible writing and character development. I am in shock.

"You okay?"

This show just gets better with each season, and this might have been the best episode yet. Everything that's always been great still is-dialogue, characters, performances, comedy-but this episode has so many memorable moments packed within that make it stand out regardless of where it all leads. It's unbelievably engaging and tense to watch this finale unfold, and that final moment certainly put my jaw a few inches closer to the floor. Incredible stuff, and truly one of the most brilliant hours of television I've seen in a long time.

Warning: Spoilers
Blew me away. Absolutely exceeded my expectations. Jesse Armstrong and the Succession team always love to end on a bang, and holy schnikes they did. Tom and Logan win this episode. Especially Tom. Bad. Ass.

I can't wait for season 4, and I can't wait for this show to sweep the emmys.

This is one of the best episodes of television I have ever seen in my life. Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin put on masterclass performances for this heavy hitting episode. I dont think I will be able to wait another year for a new season. SO GOOD.

A MASTERPIECE !!
youssefmourid13 December 2021
It's unbelievable how succession ends each season, and like each finale Jeremy Strong gave us again an incredible performance .

But to be fair all the cast deserve an emmy for this episode. I can't wait for season 4.

Warning: Spoilers
To those who say Tom and Logan won this, yes definitely. But those scenes with the three siblings were so profound and the fact that they actually got together, didn't back down and faced the demon till the end says a lot. To see the power Roman's jokes had on making Kendall feel better gave me more thrills than the ending.

Cementing itself as the best show on television.
aidan-callari13 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
What a spectacular finale. After a season built up to with two years of anticipation, with eager anticipation accompanying every poster, trailer, review, etc., we now have the full picture. And what a gorgeous picture.

In the midst of a section of the viewership bemoaning how the show "is running in circles" and "isn't going anywhere", how glorious it is to see that criticism disproven. "Succession" has never been a show that shows all its cards right away - stop expecting it to be.

I've personally loved every minute of this season, and it's quickly become one of my all-time favorite seasons of television. But this finale, and the episode before, are something else entirely. If there was any doubt that this show will be remembered as one of the best of all time (knock on wood - barring any "Game of Thrones"-level fall from grace), hopefully this finale ended that.

From the very start, the episode immediately disregarded any notion that Ken was dead in that pool - thank goodness. While I initially thought this would be a perfect death for Kendall, and I still believe it's a very strong end to his character, what Jesse Armstrong does here is so much better than what I was imagining. Because it was still a death of sorts. After nearly dying, Ken can finally let go of his white-knuckling clutch on his big secret. And once he opens up, and Roman and Shiv respond with empathy, he's unleashed. This is a new Kendall Roy.

And on how Roman and Shiv respond - that sequence was one of the greatest, not only in this show, but perhaps in any television show in the past few years. How we just sit with them, and see the three siblings finally be there for each other, was nothing short of stellar. Plus, that scene won Jeremy Strong another Emmy. What a fantastic actor in a perfect role.

And the final twist that cements my MVP of the season - Matthew Macfadyen as Tom Wambsgans. His betrayal of Shiv is such a brilliant turn, not only because it is so shocking, but also because all the breadcrumbs are there. It was perfectly built up to, and adds a much-needed wrinkle in Tom & Shiv's marriage, which is inherently broken, but probably won't end anytime soon. And the idea that Tom's Nero and Sporus reference earlier in the season actually pays off in his betrayal - that's why this show is so amazing.

While I was excited for the prospect of an all-out war season full of backstabs and switching sides, that clearly wasn't sustainable, and this is so much better. Every season of this show drastically changes the status quo and leaves the next in an even better position. And over the seasons, the theme of abuse and how it affects the Roy kids is becoming even more apparent, and their reconnection is genuinely touching, no matter how short-lived it ends up being.

In short, this show is the best on television, and it is only getting better. The year-long wait until season four is going to suck, but once we finally get it, it will be oh so worth it.

This season had a great payoff...
AlsExGal15 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
... although I thought it started off a bit slow. The siblings finally get together and then get fried. Roman - I disliked this guy at the beginning of the episode. By the end I am broken hearted for him with the "Dad, please" business.

But I have to say I was happy to believe that Tom finally took up for himself over Shiv's best interest. She has been running over him and devaluing him since they were dating. This season she has been outright telling him - "I don't love you, I am better than you, I don't care if you go to prison. You are expendable." At the end I could not tell if those last few seconds Shiv was saying that she got that Tom betrayed her because we only have her eyes. But then Sarah Snook has always been great at showing emotion with just her eyes. Shiv is actually Logan's true successor, but he is too misogynistic to ever admit that to himself if he even sees it at all.

Caroline wins out for world's worst mom. Even her apologies are narcissistic. The fact that none of the Roy siblings are serial killers is a miracle. As always, great layered writing, acting, and directing.

Absolute Perfection!
sil-1213 December 2021
What a way to end the season with a bang! Jesse Armstrong and team never fail to one up themselves.

Cinematography is perfect, writing is perfect and the performances are flawless.

The change in dynamic was genius and the final scene was one for the books.

In my opinion, Succession is one of the best shows of all times. I finally found a show I love as much as I did Breaking Bad and The Wire.

This is a case of not much happening meets everything happening in one episode. The siblings coming together only to be thwarted by Logan and...... Tom. Come on. So good. He's learning how the game is played and he's taking Greg the Egg with him. Knowing Armstrong, the fourth season will take us in unpredictable directions with much of the same power dynamics. What a way to end the season. #TeamTom.

Warning: Spoilers
I don't get the hype. None of the main characters have anything that can be considered an arc. They don't develop, it's just status quo. They are all unlikeable and opportunists. The writers should take a page from series like GoT, where even the most awful characters gain the viewer's sympathy throughout the seasons.

The redundant holding of the torch.
Top_Dawg_Critic6 June 2023
You know when a season that typically has ten episodes only has nine, they ran out of rubber-bands to stretch and drag out yet another merry-go-round narrative.

The first half of the first season was a great build-up to what could've been a very powerful and engaging series, but it fell flat with excessive repetitiveness, absurd dialogue being passed off as dark comedy, and plot holes galore within the lazy and underwhelming writing.

The second season showed promise to begin with, but just ended up with the same repetitive nonsense narrative, which of Logan's kids should and would get the torch. Ken's power play move was the only defining suspense that was intriguing leading up to season three.

In season three, Ken's play was dismissed as a red herring to further an already exhausting narrative, and it was the same merry-go-round story and perceived passing of the torch, but in more scenic destinations, with the exact same usual suspects and agendas.

When you can summarize each season in one sentence or less, the multitude of episodes are all just filler. Sure there are some taboo eccentrics and dialogue, but that's not enough to justify the ridiculous high praise this show is getting.

It's boring and tedious seeing the same characters rotating at each others throats within the same narrative, then riddle it with plot holes and useless red herrings and call it a season. Thus far, all three seasons barely justify one good two hour film - albeit with over-dramatics and predictable unfinished back-to-square-one underwhelming season finales.

Aside from great casting and performances, decent cinematography, a beautiful score with scenic backgrounds, this entire show is just another day at the office of the top-floor corporate executives suites - boring. Since I've already wasted my time watching three seasons, and know the next one is the last, I may as well watch it, because I really am bored, and there's nothing better to watch.

Succession proves why its the best show on TV now
leonthesleepy13 December 2021
No spoilers here. Nothing to say other than this finale ABSOLUTELY pays off this season. Which frankly, i was finding a bit too stagnant compared to S1 and S2, but the last 3 episodes were amazing and this really pulls it back home.

BRING ON SEASON 4.

This is turning out to be one of my favourite shows - not just of the decade but ever. A masterpiece that somehow manages to only grow more impressive and meaningful with each episode. I'm simply not used to this level of being the opposite of disappointed.

HEARTPOUNDING MASTERPIECE - SEASON 3 FINALE
axfan6413 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I am shaking as I write this. The writing in this show may be some of the best of all-time. Nothing will prepare you for what's coming in the Third Season Finale. Everything from the performances, writing, cinematography, and the locations are outstanding and have no doubt they will all get Emmys from this episode and this season (especially Jeremy Strong, Matthew Mcfayden). The only disappointment I have is that I have to wait for the next season.

A superb finale to a superb season
pachys13 December 2021
I think it is clear to say that this was the best season of Succession and this is one of the greatest seasons I've seen of any TV show. What made this episode so great, as per usual, was the acting and writing. Specifically though, the pure emotion of Kendall's emotional reveal and the blindsided events that end the episode. This episode leaves me not being able to wait for the next season, as this dysfunctional family was the most enjoyable thing for me to watch on TV in the year 2021.

Ended with another bang
ramo14013 December 2021
I don't think this show is in the same tier of The Wire or The Sopranos, at least for now. That being said the dialogue is the goat in my opinion. Especially in this finale it was firing on all cylinders.

The cinematography, the acting is also a 10/10.

My only gripe with the show is that I feel the season as a whole lacks a bit of structure. The first few episodes really set up the season, and the last two episodes wrapped up things very nicely and ended it with a stunning jaw dropping conclusion. But the middle part of the season seemed to compromise of repetitive plot points serving as filler.

I still have to give the last 2 episodes a full mark though.

The first time for Roman
chikien-9147922 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Well i'm not sure if this is accurate but as I recall, this is the first time Roman really showed that he got hurt. For the most part of all 3 seasons, he always shielded himself with sarcasm and mockery. He never, for a single moment, revealed his true feelings before coating it with some dirty jokes. Kendall collasped in s1 after that ending (and mutiple times since), Shiv did in s2 with her messy marriage, but not Roman, not until the very last moment of this episode. When he pleaded Logan with love, I can really see the desperate in his eyes. When he came to Gerri for help, and realized she, just like everybody else, was all about benefit and leverage, seeing him finally collapse by the table is so painful to watch.

And when Shiv realized Tom betrayed is so sad as well. She's been treating him terribly for the whole show, and I can clearly see the reasons behind Tom's decision, but man, being backstabbed by the one you trusted the most is just wow. What an ending!

Succession - All the Bells Say
tmcmaster-6751213 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I usually don't write reviews for tv but this episode of television absolutely blew me away. The acting from everyone down to the extras are amazing. Everyone deserves to win Emmy's for acting. As for this episode and this season in general, this is one of the greatest shows of all time. This episode of succession deserves to be next to Ozymandias of Breaking Bad as the best episode of tv ever written. There is still more of this show to go!!! Timeless show that is in its peak. Can't wait to see what's next. Also, TOMMMMMMMMM. Unbelievable. So happy with what they have done with his character. He is the real successor. Just incredible show!!

... if this show's best-drama-series.... that's telling
bjarias18 December 2021
... majority of the critics reviews say the last two S3 episodes pulled up rescued the entire season ... that might be true but this group of characters is no more likable now than anytime during preceding episodes ... they're all even more horribly-whining-annoying now

... maybe it's sets-locations being pretty to look at ... just don't totally get the overall attraction of this series ... awards for costume design okay all the rest not so sure.
