No, there isn’t a song that rhymes fava beans. Or Chianti. But an unauthorized musical parody of the 1991 thriller Silence of the Lambs did open Off Broadway this week following a successful Fringe Festival run (and multiple YouTube clicks for some of its numbers). And as I wrote in my grade-b review, Silence! The Musical “is a little longer than it needs to be and the percentage of jokes hitting their target would earn only passing marks on the Quantico firing range.” But Jenn Harris nails Jodie Foster’s speaking style as Clarice, and Brent Barrett is deliciously deadpan as Hannibal.

While Patrick Stewart was knighted by the Queen last year, he has yet to be dubbed an Emmy winner despite four nominations. However, that could change this year as he is a strong contender for recreating his Tony-nominated performance in a TV version of "Macbeth." This new interpretation from director Rupert Goold sees the Shakespearean tragedy staged in a Soviet-like subterranean fortress during the Cold War. Patrick tells Gold Derby that without pubcasters PBS and the BBC, “the production simply would have existed only in the memories of those who saw it on the stage.” It originated at the Chichester Festival in 2007 and then transferred to the West End before sell-out engagements at both the Brooklyn Academy of Music and on Broadway in 2008. "MacBeth" reaped six Tony nominations, including that bid by Stewart (he lost to Mark Rylance in "Boeing Boeing"). "Macbeth" aired as part of the 'Great Performances' se.

Sir Patrick Stewart, Spike Lee and Ray Romano were among the stars honoured at America's annual Peabody Awards in New York on Monday.
The prize-giving, which celebrates the best in broadcasting, honoured Stewart for his performance in a TV production of Shakespeare's Macbeth, while Lee was feted for his Hurricane Katrina documentary If God Is Willing and Da Creek Don't Rise.
Romano won for his show Men of a Certain Age and used his acceptance speech to joke about his lack of knowledge of the awards, telling the crowd, "The first thing I did when I found out we won a Peabody Award was Google Peabody Award... (I am impressed the Peabody board has) the guts to destroy the reputation of this award by giving one to me."
Other TV series to land mentions included The Good Wife and Claire Danes' Temple Grandin.
Larry King hosted the ceremony, which marked the awards' 70th anniversary.

While it’s been a while since we’ve last seen David Mamet on the big screen (the 2008 film Redbelt was his last feature), the writer/director/playwright hasn’t been resting on his laurels.
According to Variety, the Homicide and House Of Games director’s latest piece, a play entitled The Anarchist, has finally found a start date. Kind of.
The outlet is reporting that the play will premiere in London come this fall. Directed by Rupert Goold, the play follows a “lifer” who battles for parole, is the first play from Mamet to feature two lead roles, held by women. With no cast yet in place, it appears things are slowly moving forward for this project.
Goold is a top notch stage director, with his run on Macbeth (starring Patrick Stewart) being likely his biggest moment of his career, and with this being Mamet’s third London premiere...

FX's "Justified," TNT's "Men of a Certain Age," and the CBS drama "The Good Wife" were among the 39 recipients of the 70th Annual Peabody Awards, announced today by the University of Georgia Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Joining those three critically acclaimed dramas on a wide-ranging list of radio, television, and web-based winners recognized by the Peabody Board as representing the best in electronic media were HBO's epic miniseries "The Pacific," as well as the premium channel's Emmy-award winning original movie "Temple Grandin." The "Degrassi" franchise received its first Peabody in its 30-plus year history with a two-part episode of "Degrassi: The Next Generation" that focused upon the struggles of a transgender teenager.
In total, PBS picked up nine Peabodys among its various scripted programs in addition to awards for news and documentary series, including for Masterpiece/Mystery!'s "Sherlock: A Study in Pink," a featuring 21st-century update of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic detective, and "Great Performances: Macbeth," starring Patrick Stewart in version that reimagines the Scottish Play in an alternate setting that resembles revolutionary Russia. Among the documentary winners were "Reel Injun: On the Trail of the Hollywood Injun," which aired on "Independent Lens," and the American Masters features "LennonNYC" and "Elia Kazan: A Letter to Elia," a cinematic love letter as presented by Martin Scorsese.
"For 70 years the Peabody Award has defined excellence in electronic media," said Horace Newcomb, director of the Peabody Awards, in this morning's press release. "This list of Peabody recipients continues the commitment of the University of Georgia and the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, the stewards of the award. With that commitment, we challenge media makers and distributors to reach higher, try harder and be ever mindful of their central role in public life."
HBO won seven Peabodys, the lion's share of for its documentaries, including "12th & Delaware," "For Neda," "Burma VJ," Spike Lee's "If God is Willing and da Creek Don't Rise," and the HBO sports doc "Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals."
The list of 39 winners represents a record number of Peabodys awarded in a single year, selected by a 16 member board consisting of "television critics, industry practitioners and experts in culture and the arts," according to a UGA press release. Keep reading for the full list of Peabody winners.

Ah, let the self-congratulating continue… and this time it really is self-congratulating as the Screen Actors Guild held their awards ceremony last night. The SAG awards are interesting because it’s the actual actors who decide the year’s best performances which to us seems like the best way to get an accurate measure of the year’s best work. This is also another important event in the build-up to the Academy Awards (and the next Emmys) because traditionally the SAGs are a pretty good indicator of winners to come.Without further adieu, here are the nominees and winners…

Tom Hooper just won the DGA award for Best Director for "The King's Speech." And now, the movie has won the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards for Best Cast and Best Actor (Colin Firth). Natalie Portman won in the Best Actress category, while Christian Bale and Melissa Leo both won for their supporting roles in "The Fighter." When Bale went up to accept his award, he was surprised on stage by Dicky Eklund, the person he portrayed in the film. After hugging Eklund, Bale said: "Thank you for living the life, and thank you for letting me play you." On the television side, "Boardwalk Empire" won for Best Drama Series and Best Actor in a drama series (Steve Buscemi). Meanwhile, "Modern Family" won for Best Comedy Series and Betty White won for Best Actress in a comedy series. Theatrical Motion Pictures Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor In A Leading...

Tonight the Screen Actors Guild held their annual awards program and if you were following my live blog you saw that it wasn't exactly an exciting show, but it does help those of us trying to go 100% on our Oscar predictions a little help with our forecasts.
Just to get it out of the way, The King's Speech has pretty much established itself as the undeniable front-runner if you weren't already on board after director Tom Hooper's Directors Guild win last night. Speech took home the expected Best Actor award for star Colin Firth and then took home the Best Ensemble award, besting the predicted winner The Fighter.
I've seen some writers already saying this was a predictable SAG Awards and for the most part they are correct, but I wouldn't say The King's Speech was ever the presumed front-runner for ensemble. But I also wasn't surprised to see it win.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (20th Century Fox) Sequel to the seminal 1980s film catches up with a weathered, but still determined Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas, who seems to savor every syllable of Allan Loeb and Stephen Schiff’s screenplay) just out of jail and back on the comeback trail. In attempting to repair his relationship with his estranged daughter (Carey Mulligan), Gekko forges a reluctant alliance with her fiancé (Shia Labeouf), himself an ambitious young turk who finds himself seduced by Gekko’s silver tongue and promise of riches. Lifeless film is further evidence of director Oliver Stone’s decline. Once America’s most exciting filmmaker, Stone hasn’t delivered a film with any teeth since 1995’s Nixon. Labeouf and Mulligan generate no sparks on-screen, and the story feels forced from the protracted opening to the final, Disney-esque denouement. Only a brief cameo by Charlie Sheen,...

It's always quite interesting to see television meet Shakespeare. Last year, Acorn Media gave us a brilliant meeting of the two in the Blu-ray release of the Canadian series Slings & Arrows, an utterly brilliant dark comedy that followed a dysfunctional theater troupe as it attempted to put on adaptations of Hamlet, Macbeth, and King Lear. Now, this year, Acorn Media's documentary imprint Athena will be putting out more Shakespeare, this time in the form of a documentary titled Discovering Hamlet.
Shakespeare isn't the only connection this release has to previous Acorn titles. The director of the play it focuses on is Derek Jacobi, who played the titular character in Acorn's November release Cadfael. Also recognizable is a pre-Harry Potter Kenneth Branagh, who stars in the production as eponymous prince of Denmark.
The documentary was filmed in 1988, and if it wasn't for the recognizable faces, you wouldn't be able to tell.

JoBeth Williams welcomes you! "They're heeeeeeeee--eeeere"
Giggly Rosario Dawson & Angie Harmon announced the SAG nominations at 9:00 Am Est after being introduced by JoBeth Williams.
Though this is the last major clue as to where Oscar acting nominations will go, it is not the "this is it!" twin that many like to claim.
Important Differences From SAG to Oscar: Contrary to what you often read on the internet there is not significant overlap in the voting pools between SAG and Oscar. Unless they've recently changed their rules, SAG randomly chooses a sliver of its membership each year to do the nominations. Some miniscule percentage of them might be Academy members but the numbers don't add up to a big percentage. SAG is a mammoth union, representing 200,000 film, tv and background performers and all dues paying members can vote on the winners. Oscar's acting branch is infinitely harder to join; it's...

Today the nominations for the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards was released. The King’s Speech and The Fighter received the most nominations, with four each. Thankfully the Guild seems to know what they are doing unlike The Golden Globes who pretty much screwed up all the nominations.
The nominees here are usually a very strong indication of how the acting award nominees will play out at the Oscars. King’s Speech has long been an Oscar favourite, but David O. Russell’s The Fighter has gained considerable steam in the past few weeks. Last year, 19 out of 20 SAG nominees went to the Oscars as well so you can be sure that The Fighter and King’s Speech will get a best picture nomination. The 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be simulcast live on TNT and TBS on January 20th. See the complete list below.

Awards season is in full swing right now, which is pretty evident since for the past week we've been bombarded with movie nominations left and right. The 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards adds onto the bunch, throwing their hat into the ring of who's the cream of the crop acting-wise this year. Los Angeles may be gloomy-looking this morning, but the sun is certainly shining down on some actors who are nominated.Of course you have the typical nominees from films like "The Social Network," "The King's Speech" and "Black Swan," but there's also a couple of nice little surprises in the mix. Scroll down to see the full list of movie and television nominees and let us know whether you like the SAG list more than the Golden Globe one or not. This year's 17th Annual SAG Awards will be shown on January 30th, 2011 at 5 p.m. Pst on TNT and TBS.

As awards season trudges on towards the Academy Awards early next year, we're seeing a lot of repeat offenders getting love, while other films have been surprisingly ignored altogether.
That trend is partially continued with today's announcement of the SAG Awards nominations. As expected, films like "The King's Speech" and "The Fighter" are doing just fine, with both of those pictures earning four nominations a piece.
But there's a pleasant surprise for fans of the Coen Bros., too: "True Grit," the directing pair's soon-to-release Western epic, snagged two nods from the SAGs after getting shut out completely at the Golden Globes.
A full list of SAG Awards nominees is below, with most of the results playing out as expected: Natalie Portman and Annette Bening are once again going head-to-head in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role category for their work in "Black Swan" and "The Kids Are All Right,...

The Screen Acors Guild has released their award nominations for their upcoming 17th annual award ceremony, which will take place on January 30, 2011.
There are some great nominations here. My favorite picks include Christian Bale for his role in The Fighter, Natalie Portman in her role in Black Swan, and Jesse Eisenberg for his role in The Social Network. As much as I love most of these films, I'm surprised that Inception is no where to be seen. That was one of the best films of the year and it seems to be escaping a lot of the nominations in all the award ceremonies this year.
Check out the list of Film and TV nominations below and tell us what your favorite are!

Hot on the heels of the Golden Globe nominations, the 17th annual SAG Award nominations have been announced! The Fighter and Black Swan lead with four nominations each, and while there are many similarities to the Golden Globe list, I'm relieved to see some differences, like the additions of True Grit actors Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld. Notably absent is Inception, except for its presence in the best stunt ensemble category, while I'm again surprised to see Javier Bardem shut out for best actor for Biutiful. Over on the TV side, the Betty White cable comedy Hot in Cleveland got lots of love, but aside from that, the names are pretty familiar to awards season. To see the full list of the Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, just read more. Okay, totally kidding about the Colfer Lifetime Achievement Award thing - that will be going to Ernest Borgnine. But does it seem to you that the kid who plays Kurt Hummel is getting an awful lot of awards season love? (And wouldn't McHale's Navy have been so much better with him in it?)
The latest outpouring of Colfer acclaim comes from the Screen Actors Guild who announced their 17th annual SAG nominees this morning.
The Glee cast is up for a comedy ensemble award, but Colfer was the only cast member other than Jane Lynch to be recognized individually. And given who he's up against he's almost certain to be the frontrunner!
Another bit of good news for a Glbt favorite, The Kids Are All Right, scored individual acting nods for Annete Bening, Mark Rufallo, and also a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast.

The complete list of nominations for the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards follows below. The ceremony will be held on January 30th, 2011.
Nothing really to highlight here, unfortunately. SAG voters apparently didn’t care for Halle Berry’s performance as much as the Golden Globes did, because she’s not on this list. And neither is Idris Elba, who was also nominated for a Golden Globe. The cast of For Colored Girls got no love either.
The significance here is that SAG nominees and winners are voted on by members of the union – essentially, their peers.
But one thing that should be obvious by now is that the Oscar race is going to come down to 4 films and the performances in those films: The Social Network, Black Swan, The King’s Speech, and The Fighter. I still have to see the last 2.

It was a morning of very few surprises as Angie Harmon and Rosario Dawson announced the 2011 Screen Actors Guild Awards nominees - apart from a few slightly awkward, but still cute jokes from Harmon about sneaking her own name onto the list.
The "Modern Family" cast was honored as an ensemble, but notably, Emmy winner and Golden Globe nominee Eric Stonestreet wasn't singled out. Instead, co-stars Sofia Vergara, Ty Burrell, and Ed O'Neill were nominated in the outstanding actor categories. O'Neill was previously snubbed by both the Emmy Awards and the Globes.
"Glee" continues to be well-represented by both the ensemble and standouts Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch. Of course, "30 Rock's" ensemble, Alec Baldwin, and Tina Fey were also nominated. Betty White, everyone's favorite sprightly grandma, was nominated, as was her "Hot in Cleveland" cast as a whole.

This morning at 6 Am, Rosario Dawson and Angie Harmon announced the nominees for the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards in five film and eight television categories. In the film category The Fighter and The King's Speech led the way, both earning four nominations with Black Swan and The Kids are All Right both earning three.
Looking over the list of nominees I can't say I'm surprised by too many of the choices outside of the love Black Swan is receiving from yet another Mila Kunis nomination for Supporting Actress and the film itself getting an ensemble nomination, a nomination I thought The Town would surely be getting. This moves Kunis much higher into the Supporting Actress conversation and will have me second guessing The Town as a Best Picture nominee, though Jeremy Renner's performance is assuredly a lock for a Supporting Actor nom.
Elsewhere, Hilary Swank's nomination...

The Walking Dead ends in the UK, the original Wallander is on, Dirk Gently arrives, and there are lots of films to look forward to as well...
As many of our favourite shows finish or break for the winter and holiday hiatus, we reach the short lull before the madness of Christmas scheduling.
But there's still lots of great telly to be found in the upcoming week and we give you the highlights of the next seven days' worth of televisual delights and curiosities.
Tonight, Friday, December 10th, The Walking Dead finale airs at 10:00pm on FX. Entitled Ts-19, the episode begins with our group of survivors finally reaching what appears to be a zombie-free haven. But that would be too easy, wouldn't it? It was far too short a series with far too long to wait until it starts again, but have a look and see if you...

He's perhaps best known for saying "engage" a lot as Captain Picard in Star Trek. But Sir Patrick Stewart is one of Britain's finest actors as he's out to prove in this superb re-imagining of Shakespeare's masterful tragedy Macbeth. Just at home treading the boards of a broadway theatre as he is in glitzy Hollywood roles involving warp engines and spandex-clad super heroes, Sir Patrick is one of British acting's finest talents.

While it could be the weather or the crowds that might dissuade people from heading to the theaters this holiday season, a handful of distributors are providing plenty of reasons to stay in with plenty of films available at just the touch of a button. IFC and Magnolia continue to bring the arthouse to your house with hot festival favorites such as Lena Dunham's comedy "Tiny Furniture" and the Kerry Washington-Anthony Mackie drama "Night Catches Us" arriving on demand at the same time they hit theaters, while companies like FilmBuff and Gravitas are debuting new films from Edward Burns ("Nice Guy Johnny") and Melissa Leo ("One Night") on an array of platforms to choose from. A complete guide to what's not at your local multiplex is below.

Most people know the recently-knighted Patrick Stewart from his movie and TV roles, many of which are of the sci fi / fantasy variety. Of course, there's Jean-Luc Picard of 'Star Trek: The Next Generation,' but there's also Charles Xavier in the 'X-Men' series and the voice of Avery Bullock on 'American Dad.'
But back in his native England, Sir Patrick is just as well known for his Shakespearean work, both on-stage and on the screen. Some of that work will be on display on April 28, when he reprises the role of Claudius (he first played the role on TV 30 years ago) in PBS's production of 'Hamlet' on 'Great Performances.' As Nick mentioned yesterday, the production, with David Tennant in the title role, mixes the classic dialogue with modern dress and settings to give the play a more contemporary feel.

British actor Sir Patrick Stewart is returning to Broadway - he's to star in award-winning playwright David Mamet's next New York stage production this autumn.
The X-Men star will begin rehearsing for his role in the revival of A Life In The Theatre on 23 August, according to producer Jeffrey Richards.
A Life In the Theatre, about the relationship between an older performer and a younger actor, was first seen in Chicago, Illinois in 1977 and was later performed off-Broadway.
Neil Pepe, who took charge of the 2008 Broadway revival of Mamet's Speed-the-Plow, will direct. Stewart's younger co-star has yet to be cast.
The veteran star was last seen on Broadway in 2008, playing the title character in Macbeth.
