Anatomy of a Murder (Criterion Collection) I looked back through my Netflix queue to see when I first watched Anatomy of a Murder and it turns out it was back in January 2009 and while I remembered enjoying it I didn't remember the film per se. So it was a treat to pop this new Criterion Blu-ray in the player and settle in to Otto Preminger's 1959 thriller with James Stewart in the lead and an impressive supporting cast and a feature filled with dialogue you can't get enough of.
As for the transfer, it's almost too good as a moment early on featuring the makeup on Lee Remick's bruised face is so obvious it's almost comical, but you're hardly paying attention as she does everything in her power to seduce Stewart into taking her husband's case.

Read all about it! Seiji Chiba in ninja movie shocker! Before we start, I want to remind you of the last time I wrote about a Seiji Chiba movie. The film was called Rogue Ninja and the review went a little something like this. “For a film that clocks in at just over an hour, there’s a lot of exposition to wade through. The characters in Rogue Ninja sure like to talk, conspiring, deliberating, or just plain standing around putting the world to rights - you sometimes get the feeling that the world of Rogue Ninja is set inside a giant girl’s bathroom.” You wouldn’t believe how tempted I was to just copy and paste the review over. Then again, isn’t that kind of what I’m doing now? Wait, there’s more…The battle scenes are tightly choreographed - fast, fluid and energetic - but...

Rogue Ninja
Stars: Mika Hijii | Written and Directed by Seji Chiba
“The time is the 16th Century and the whole of Japan is wracked by civil war. The Iga ninja, fated to be demolished by Nobunaga Oda, the greatest warlord of the time, have put their people under severe and harsh restrictions, with the upper echelons of the ninja brotherhood ruling their charges with an iron fist. Even the slightest and most minor of infractions can result in a death sentence for members of the lesser ninja, even those few women who number amongst their ranks.
One such female ninja is Ukagami (Hijii), a stunning yet formidable warrior, who is sentenced to death by her evil ninja peers when she disobeys her elders and leaves the secret order to track down a kidnapped childhood friend. While on the run, she forges a savage and crimson path of bloodshed that will...

Director: Seiji Chiba. Review: Adam Wing. Seiji Chiba sure loves his ninja movies. The Kunoichi: Ninja Girl, Alien vs. Ninja, Evil Ninja - its safe to assume that he’s comfortable within the action genre. Fans on these shores are likely to be familiar with Alien vs. Ninja, an action spoof that was little more than a sixty-minute fight sequence. There was enough mutilation and mayhem to keep you from reaching for the remote control though, even if it lacked the invention of some of its siblings. Rogue Ninja lacks anything approaching comedy aliens, with Chiba instead choosing to take his latest foray incredibly seriously. It's the 16th Century, a period of civil war in Japan, and stuck right in the middle are the Iga ninja. Rather than stand firm against the Nobunaga Oda and the Koga ninja that have joined forces, the Iga turn on themselves, dispensing with...

In "Cowboys & Aliens," director Jon Favreau pits a posse of gunslingers against an extraterrestrial invasion force straight out of a sci-fi nightmare. In many ways, it's a new twist on an old classic, as those pesky creatures from outer space have been wreaking Hollywood havoc for years now, and gtheir efforts definitely haven't been confined to the Old West.
From the age of vikings to the far-flung future, alien invasions have been thwarted by a long list of unlikely defenders from Earth -- many of them even more ill-equipped than the "Cowboys & Aliens" cast. Don't believe me? Here are five examples of films that feature entirely unexpected saviors of the planet we call home.
"Outlander" (2008)
Pre-dating all of the gunslinging and dynamite of "Cowboys & Aliens," this 2008 film features a battle between Norsemen circa 709 A.D. and a monstrous alien that crashed near their village. While the movie didn't receive much attention,...

The gleefully twisted folks at Sushi Typhoon have done it again. The latest action-packed, blood-soaked black comedy Yakuza Weapon (2011) comes courtesy of co-writers and co-directors Tak Sakaguchi and Yudai Yamaguchi.
Based on an adult manga by the late Ken Ishikawa, Yakuza Weapon stars Sakaguchi as Shozo Iwaki, an extremely hard to kill mercenary working in the jungles of South America for the last four years. Shozo has been informed of his father Kenzo’s (Akaji Maro) death by two special agents with their own motives. Kenzo was a yakuza boss who had been double-crossed and murdered by his second-in-command Kurawaki (Shingo Tsurumi).
Upon his return to Japan Shozo is greeted in a rather unique way by his girlfriend (Mei Kurowaka) who loves him but wants to put a serious hurtin’ on him. Shozo, who is bent on revenge, goes after Kurawaki in a spectacular fight...

Let’s face it, the original Japanese “Alien vs. Ninja” made absolutely no sense whatsoever, so remaking it for American audiences makes even less sense. But hey, I’m not some suit with lots of money and the will to do whatever he wants, gosh darn it, so what do I know. Producer Arnold Messer (via his Phoenix Pictures) apparently really, really, Really liked the original: I was seized by the concept after watching the original movie and it hasn’t left me for a moment. I think we have found a very unique way to frame the story and bring a heroic twist to it that is fresh, surprising and one that will be a very entertaining sci-fi martial arts comedy. Jon Favreau already sorta beat them to it with “Cowboys and Aliens”, so I can’t imagine where Messer, who actually has some reasonably legitimate films in his...

In an age where Hollywood studios rarely greenlight movies that aren't based on pre-existing properties or brand names, high-concept films are making a comeback in a big way. Perhaps the most extreme example of this is the recent trend of schlocky "versus" movies, based solely around a showdown between two disparate groups. Now it looks like we're about to get yet another one to be filed alongside Cowboys and Aliens, Monsters vs. Aliens, Alien vs. Predator, Alien vs. Ninja, and Michael Bay's Zombies vs. Robots [1]. But wait, what's that? It's being directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and written by Grant Morrison? Okay, now I'm interested! Deadline [2] reports that Liquid Comics and Cheyenne Enterprises will partner with them to turn their idea into a graphic novel and a feature film called Dominion: Dinosaurs Versus Aliens. Get ready for Jurassic Park meets War of the Worlds! Barry Sonnenfeld is best known for the Men in Black series,...

Seiji Chiba, director of the cult festival fav AvN (Alien vs. Ninja) has a new trailer for his martial arts film, Kunoichi. In the film, Takeda plays a young woman named Kisaragi who is abducted from her Koga ninja village along with three other women. The four of them are tied together with a rope and are led through the forest with sacks over their heads. Their captors are Shimotsuki and Hizuki, ninjas from the rival Iga clan who sell the women they capture into prostitution. Suddenly, a mysterious man appears and releases the four women from their bindings, giving Kisaragi an opportunity to fight back.

The Film:
Seriously.
That’s the tag line. Simple, effective, true. If you’re still shaking your head, don’t worry, I was too. But don’t be so quick to dismiss it, especially if you love loud, silly, campy late night films, because if you vibe with this sucker in those terms, watch out! – AvN (Alien vs. Ninja) is a big, bloody, rubbery, blast. Showing no signs of pretentiousness like most modern attempts at making a “bad” movie, AvN is a lovable Mystery Science Theater 3000 movie if there ever was one.
I would have loved to be in on the pitch to the producers for this one. “Can we have some money for this project I have?” inquires director Seiji Chiba. The curious producers chime in: “What’s the movie about?” In an outgoing spurt Chiba says: “an alien falls to Earth during a blood feud between two rival ninja clans.

Canada's Rue Morgue Magazine has teamed with film distribution company Sushi Typhoon to raise money for relief efforts following the Japanese earthquakes and tsunami. Naturally, the pair will be sponsoring film screenings across North America, with proceeds going to the Japan Society. More details after the jump. Starting April 28th, theatres in New York, Dallas, Philly, Vancouver, Toronto, and other cities will screen splatter comedies (because splatter drama would be in poor taste), with a portion of the box office going to the relief effort. Films that are currently on the calendar include Helldriver, Mutant Girl Squad, Alien Vs. Ninja, and Karate-Robo Zaborgar. More dates and locations are in...

Aspiring screenwriters, take note. To sell a spec script in Hollywood nowadays, you need only follow this simple three-step formula: 1. Base the story on an existing comic book 2. Come up with a catchy and/or ironic title 3. Add zombies It really is that simple. Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes production company is currently setting up a project called Zombies vs. Robots, based on an Idw comic by Ashley Wood and Chris Ryall. It may sound like it could be a sequel to Jon Favreau's upcoming Cowboys vs. Aliens, but the two are apparently unrelated. Sony Pictures has picked up the distribution rights after a bidding war with multiple studios. Hey, at least it's not another board game movie, right? The plot revolves around a young girl who is the last survivor on earth. A group of robots must protect her from roving zombies that are "intelligent and evolved." What remains...

While there aren't any horror releases by major studios this week, there is, however, one notable film that should make up for the drought we are having. It is a film that should be re-subtitled "Shock and Awe" as that was how our @Foywonder felt after viewing Birdemic: Shock and Terror.
Anyway, this avian midnight movie sensation is directed by James Nguyen and stars Alan Bagh, Whitney Moore, Janae Caster, Colton Osborne, and Adam Sessa plus five seconds of stock footage of Tippi Hedren from a previous film.
This week also brings us Psych: 9 from Ghost House Underground. This film is directed by Andrew Shortell and produced by Gareth Jones; it stars Sara Foster, Cary Elwes, Michael Biehn, and Gabriel Man. Rounding out the list are a wacky concept that has warrior creatures battling it out for our amusement and a fusion ghost story.

Stars: Mika Hijii, Ben Hiura, Shûji Kashiwabara, Masanori Mimoto | Written and Directed by Seiji Chiba
Alien vs. Ninja is that latest low-budget straight to DVD production from those purveyors of Ott filth Sushi Typhoon. Packed with the type of action, gore and frankly ridiculous ideas we’ve come to expect from the company, the film tells the story of a group of ninjas who witness a blazing fireball roaring across the sky before crashing to earth in the distant forest. Rushing to the scene to investigate, they are caught completely off guard when they discover and are besieged by a pack of brutal and extremely ravenous extra-terrestrials and their slimy offspring – unwelcome visitors who most definitely have not come in peace. Quickly realising their swords, knives and throwing stars are ineffective against these intergalactic predators, the fearless ninja find themselves facing their greatest challenge ever in a mammoth fight for survival.

Japan has given us some of the greatest films ever made. They’ve also given us some of the most insane, perplexing and downright fun. Guess which category Alien Vs. Ninja fits into? Yes, this sci-fi actioner is proudly insane and looks to deliver on lashings of gore for good measure.

If It Bleeds... Ninjas Can Kill It! What could be a better Christmas present for Brit fans of Japanese trash, gore horror than news that Seiji Chiba’s exploitation bloodbath Alien Vs. Ninja has just been given a UK release date, and it drops onto DVD there, near a full month before the U.S gets to see it. A Vs N promises non-stop martial arts mayhem, meets monster mash-up, with a liberal splattering of gore, furious fights and great stunt work. Does it deliver? Tick, tick, tick and…tick. Alien Vs. Ninja is released by Revolver Entertainment on Feb 7th in the UK, and by Funimation in the U.S on Feb 22nd.

Reviewing Alien Vs. Ninja is strange considering that it requires one to willfully sit down and watch a movie that one should probably only stumble upon when channel-surfing after midnight. Alien vs. Ninja is a low-budget Japanese riff on Predator that looks like it was filmed on VHS tapes over the course of a week. The costumes and sets were probably the most expensive things in the film's budget, which isn't saying much considering that the aliens are dressed up in green stretchy latex-type pants that even the guys playing the Sleestaks from the '70s Land of the Lost show would laugh at. That kind of Z-grade indie genre film is apparently going to be the bread and butter of Sushi Typhoon, an American extension of Japan's Nikkatsu Studios that's using Alien Vs. Ninja as its flagship title for home video audiences. I can't see this thing working for...

Synopsis:
In medieval Japan, no one can hear you scream. And no one can prepare you for the arrival of a great big honking rubber alien who wants to party in space-invader style--meaning tearing off heads and ripping out intestines. This sick extraterrestrial freak even wants to impregnate our species with its hideous jelloid babies. It's unstoppable. It's unkillable. It's unbeatable! Almost--it's not ninja-proof.
Unfortunately the movie doesn't have a U.S. distributor yet, and it most likely never will. This is one...
