Martial arts flick with some very weird elements
Red-Barracuda10 November 2015
This obscure Hong Kong action flick is by the numbers in a lot of ways but has a few things about it that mark it out as being somewhat distinctive. It has a typical revenge set-up so very common in these types of movies but this part of the story is really pretty tedious and it's the other less expected stuff that ensures that there is interest value in this one. Unpredictably, it focuses on a woman who raises her child with the help of a tiger. She had been left for dead by her evil father yet survived the ordeal with the help of the big cat who seemed to take a shine to her after she urinated on it by accident. Go figure, yet in the dialogue the woman says that legend says that a tiger will serve a woman if she kisses it. Sure…but ultimately she did actually pee on it and did not appear to kiss it at any point. There's no point in splitting hairs over details like this though, as this is the kind of film where logical details are beside the point.

I would probably describe this one as having a good beginning and ending but with a tiresome middle section. The opening scenes focus on the tiger family, the middle section involves the boy getting involved in trouble with the local villagers, while the final section improbably switches to supernatural horror. This latter part might have been bizarre but it was also pretty effective in places with the witch woman as scarily sinister as female witches always seem to be in East Asian films. This material follows on from where the boy and his mother are killed, leading to the tiger taking vengeance by somehow taking on the form of a witch. It begins killing not only bad guys but innocent bystanders as well. All this strange material was delivered pretty well and suggests to me that this would have worked a lot better as a straight horror movie than as an action flick. The martial arts scenes are in the middle part but they are all pretty forgettable to be honest, while there is also a romantic sub-plot too, which also is a little tiresome.

All-in-all, a decidedly left-of-centre oddball of a movie. But worth watching for its more eccentric content.

Weird kung fu cheapie with an unlikely twist
Leofwine_draca27 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this cheapie under the title TIGER'S KUNG FU and it really is a kung fu oddity. The film stars Lo Lieh in a supporting role as a husband and father who is attacked by a villainous gang headed by his own father. He's left for dead but his pregnant wife manages to escape and lives alone in the jungle, where she befriends a tiger which adopts her as one of its own. She successfully delivers the male baby herself and the kid is brought up feral, like Tarzan, and also a master in the art of 'tiger kung fu'.

Eventually the usual stock plot recurs which sees the kid fall foul of some local gangsters. Romeo and Juliet seems to have been a big inspiration here. The reunion scene between his mother and father is quite well done and reminds one what a good actor Lieh was; one of my favourites, in fact, and it's a pity that he didn't get more screen time here as the rest of the cast are sub-standard. The kung fu isn't much better, but the addition of the tiger to the cast is what makes this memorable. There's a jaw-dropping scene of a kid beating the tiger with a stick which reminds one of the recklessness of a film like ROAR. Later scenes in which the tiger gets a human voice and turns into a witch are hilarious. Inevitably this is a lacklustre and slapdash production, but fans of quirkiness might get a kick out of it.

A evil Tony the tiger
ironhorse_iv5 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This is no "Life with Pi'. This is one of the most disturbing movies I ever saw. I don't think it's supposed to be a horror movie, but after watching it. It might be a snuff film due to scenes where the tiger attacks the actors so realism that it look like they didn't live. The tiger doesn't even look like defanged and declawed. In some scenes, the tiger looks so harmless when it supposed to look vicious, and other scenes, where the tiger is supposed to look playful, it's not. It's not fully trained. Clearly it's trying to hide the facts, by trying to make it out to be an action/ adventure and quick editing. It's really is disturbing in many ways because you don't know if you watching the last moments of a person life. Tiger Love is a movie about a woman who met the tiger, by accidentally peeing on it while on a tree in the opening shot. The film stated that the tiger serves her because she kissed it, even though she clearly urinated on it. Somehow the tiger was okay about it, and they forced to flee and take shelter in the remote jungle region due getting beaten by a rival family. The mother raised a child, Hong Po with the tiger. This is uncomfortable due to the implication that the mother had the child with the tiger (implying beastality). The mother encourages the child to fight with the tiger to build strength for him. In a very disturbing scene- a young boy playing with "Uncle Tiger" while the woman watches. The scene ends with a freeze frame as the tiger leaps at the apparently terrified child. We only see the boy in loop stock footage after that. The film then jump to now adult son (played by the impressive but little-remembered onetime kung fu superstar Lo Lieh) who is reintroduced to civilization, having learned badly choreographed martial arts from watching the tiger. However, the young man soon runs in trouble with the villagers when trying to avenge his father's cruel murder. It ends with him and his mother getting killed as a result. Very little martial arts fight scenes, most of those literally lasting less than a minute or two of the film's 92 minute run. Without them, the tiger is then possession by a witch, seeks revenge killing not only the people that kill the mother, but anybody that get in the way. Then there are more disturbing scenes with the tiger mauling people. Can anybody stop a witch control tiger? Watch it, and you will also find it disturbing.

Worth a watch for schlock newbies and connoisseurs.

Warning: Spoilers
Aside from a few set-piece moments, such as the memorable opening in which a woman somehow turns a tiger friendly by peeing on him from a treetop, and later a sudden and total genre switch from out of nowhere, this movie is a tad on the forgettable side.

There isn't much action compared to it's Kung Fu contemporaries with maybe 4 or 5 fight scenes, most of those literally lasting less than a minute or two of the film's 92 minute run. Much of the screen time is spent on exposition (the cheap filmmaker's ultimate tool) and developing a Romeo & Juliet plot which unfortunately does not involve the tiger.

I may just be jaded from years of watching glorious garbage like "Robo Vampire" though. I've seen better of the worst in film, but there are enough weird moments to warrant a watch, especially for those new to appreciating bad movies.

Alternately Boring and Hilarious
TheExpatriate70020 July 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I watched Tiger Love because of an interview on The Cinema Snob's website, which focused on a scene which appeared to depict a tiger actually attacking a young boy. The film looked bizarre enough to merit a look.

In the beginning, we see a pair of star-crossed lovers getting beaten by the woman's family. The woman jumps off a cliff and lands on a tree, right above a tiger. In fear, she urinates herself, with some landing on the tiger. Somehow, as a result, the tiger becomes her protector.

The film goes into comedic territory immediately from here. For starters, in the dialogue, it is stated that the tiger serves her because she kissed it, even though she clearly urinated on it. Perhaps someone typed a k when they meant to type a p.

From there, we go on to the scene which has made the movie infamous. We jump to a young boy playing with "Uncle Tiger" while the woman watches. The mother encourages the child to fight with the tiger, and the scene ends with a freeze frame as the tiger leaps at the apparently terrified child. We only see the boy in a bit of looped footage after that. One hopes that someone with a tranquilizer gun was on set.

At this point, the film drags for half an hour as the now adult son is reintroduced to civilization, having learned martial arts from watching the tiger. However, the young man soon runs afoul of the villagers, with her mother getting killed as a result. The villagers soon learn that killing a woman served by a tiger is a very bad idea.

Frankly, even at 90 minutes, the film drags on for too long, with the plot development going far too slowly and predictably. The martial arts is rather badly choreographed as well. Watch for humor value only.

weird mix of genres
megasharktopus4 September 2010
Warning: Spoilers
If this is the same movie that's in my 50 kung fu movie box set, then this is a really weird movie where a child is raised in the wilderness, by his mother, along with a pet tiger. He then returns home to his family and ends up fighting with a rival family, or something like that. Then, about 2/3rds of the way through, the mother and son are killed. Out of nowhere, the tiger starts thinking to itself, in human language, about how it wants revenge, and turns itself into a witch. Only, instead of just killing the bad guys, it starts to kill indiscriminately, becoming evil. Finally, someone kills it. I might have some of the details of the plot wrong, but that's basically it. There are some very badly choreographed kung fu scenes at the beginning of Tiger Love. Once the tiger turns evil, however, it's more of a weird supernatural horror movie.
