For those of us who religiously watch “Sex and the City” on whatever platform it is currently streaming on (hi), April 1 is an exciting day. With Covid lockdowns and shuttered cinemas and the dual wallop of the writers’ and actors’ strikes, it’s been a rough few years for independent movies. But the end of strike action last November has triggered a rebound in the indie market. After a strong showing in Sundance, buyers and sellers are looking to Berlin’s European Film Market to provide proof this recovery has legs.
Early signs are promising, with a flood of new projects across all budgets and genres. CAA Media Finance alone has half a dozen finished films on sale and around 20 big packages, including sci-fi actioner Afterburn with Dave Bautista and Samuel L. Jackson attached, selling together with Black Bear; the drama A Big Bold Beautiful Journey from After Yang and Pachinko director Kogonada, featuring Colin Farrell and a post-Barbie Margot Robbie, that 30West and Neon International are jointly handling, and the Michelle Yeoh action thriller The Mother alongside AGC International.

Adam Devine, J.K. Simmons, Sam Richardson and Elsie Fisher will lend their voices to “Hypergalactic,” the CG animated family feature co-created by Naoto Oshima, best known for designing the original “Sonic the Hedgehog” for Sega, and Joseph Chou.
The English-language film, directed by David N. Weiss and now in post-production, marks the most ambition CG feature to date from Toei Animation. The Japanese studio was behind recent anime smash hits “The First Slam Dunk,” which grossed $279 million, and “One Piece Film: Red,” which has so far earned $246.6 million.
Charades are set to launch worldwide sales on “Hypergalatic” at Berlin’s European Film Market, alongside Iwashina Corporation founder Kevin Iwashina, who is also an advisor to Toei.
“Hypergalactic” follows an adventurous teenage girl (Fisher) and her baby brother in the not-so-distant future, after they liberate the forgotten protector of Earth, Ohkan (Devine), in the hopes that he can help reunite them with their missing parents.

The Japanese streaming video space remains competitive, with Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+ and local competitors reaching more than 100 billion viewing minutes in 2023 in the “premium VOD” space that generated $4.5 billion in subscription revenue.
Those are some of the findings of a new study by MediaPartners Asia’s data analytics arm ampd, which also highlighted the success of Japanese streamer U-Next and local broadcasters’ advertising-supported service Tver, operated by Nippon TV, TV Asahi, TBS Television, TV Tokyo and Fuji Television and others.
“Local broadcaster-led AVOD platform Tver commanded over 20.2 million monthly active users (MAUs) and captured 38 percent of premium VOD viewership in 2023,” the “Japan Online Video Consumer Insights & Analytics” report, which uses a permission-based passive panel measuring the digital activity of more than 19,000 members in a partnership with Intage Group, found. “Amazon Prime Video led the SVOD category with 19.7 million MAUs, followed by U-Next (8.2 million) and Netflix (7.5 million).”

Amazon’s Prime Video has more monthly paying users than Netflix in Japan, but Netflix’s subs appear more engaged, a report has revealed.
Prime Video is currently commanding 19.7 million monthly active users (MAUs), ahead of U-Next (8.2 million) and Netflix (7.5 million), according to Ampd, a data analytics company owned by Media Partners Asia.
Local broadcaster-led AVOD platform Tver had the highest Mau base overall (20.2 million) and also led premium VOD viewership in 2023, capturing 38% of the market. Along with Netflix, it also recorded the highest engagement, with Tver getting an average of 8.8 and Netflix 7.3 hours per user each quarter.
In effect, this all means Prime Video is bringing more than double the number of MAUs to its service than Netflix each month, but Netflix’s smaller audience is consuming more content.

Japan was a latecomer to the video streaming era, with many viewers still preferring the collectability of physical media. But now the Japanese streaming sector appears to have reached maturity.
A new report from data analytics company Ampd, that is part of consultancy and research firm Media Partners Asia, shows that Japan’s premium VOD category expanded from 50.6 million subscriptions in 2022 to 52.6 million in 2023. (Some households may have multiple subscriptions.) That was worth $4.5 billion of subscription revenues, compared with $4.1 billion.
Interestingly, the number of minutes watched on premium streaming services dropped from 110 billion minutes in 2022 to 102 billion in 2023. Ampd says its Japan Online Video Consumer Insights & Analytics report uses a permission-based passive panel measuring digital activity from over 19,000 members in partnership with the Intage Group.

Following the recent announcement of One Piece anime’s remake titled The One Piece at Jump Festa ’24, Hiromi Ishigami, an animator who’s worked on the ongoing anime adaptation of the series and also served as the animation director of One Piece Film: Red, took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the big news.
Ishigami began by expressing a sense of anticipation and curiosity, suggesting that the One Piece remake could give a fresh take to the ongoing series.

Netflix's "One Piece" series officially hits the streamer on Aug. 31. On Jan. 30, Netflix shared the first look at the live-action series (which is based on the beloved manga by Eiichiro Oda) in the form of a poster, where we see Iñaki Godoy as the series's main character, Monkey D. Luffy, from behind, wearing his iconic straw hat.
The "One Piece" manga series began publishing way back in 1997. In it, Oda tells the story of Luffy, a pirate who can gain magical abilities by eating a special type of fruit. He's determined to get the titular One Piece, which makes the bearer the king of all pirates. He and his Straw Hat Pirates - which include the sword fighter Roronoa Zoro, the sometimes cowardly Usopp, and the prince Sanji - face down all sorts of enemies on their quest. The manga is still running, but Oda said in August 2022 that...

Two Japanese films by internationally renowned auteurs — “Monster” by Koreeda Hirokazu and “Kubi” by Kitano Takeshi — are in the Cannes lineup this year, and both carry with them big box office expectations in Japan.
“Monster,” which is screening in competition, will be released on June 2 by Gaga and Toho, the latter Japan’s largest distributor and theater chain operator. Taking Toei
Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund Public Investment Fund (Pif) has increased its stake in Japanese film and TV studio Toei Company, from 5% to 6.03%, according to a report by the Reuters financial news agency. The move comes shortly after Toei published a ten-year plan for international expansion.
Toei includes film and TV production operations, the T-Joy cinema chain and Toei Animation. Last month, it said that it had beaten its film revenue record, thanks to the success of titles including “The First Slam Dunk,” “The Legend of Butterfly” and “One Piece Film Red.”
The stake increase also follows Pif’s February announcement that it had increased its stake in Japanese games and console maker Nintendo to 8.26% and that (along with the Singapore state fund Gic) was a buyer of a $966 million bond issue from Korean entertainment-tech firm Kakao Corp.

Cinema admissions in Japan grew by 32 in 2022, reaching 152 million, according to data published Tuesday by the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan (Eiren).
In revenue terms, Eiren shows cinema box office growing by almost the same proportion to 1.24 million. That cements Japan’s position as the world’s third largest box office territory behind only North America and China.
The Eiren data for 2022, however, diverges significantly from figures from other sources as it runs from December 2021 to November 2022. That means it omits December when “Avatar: The Way of Water” was released and when box office worldwide received a significant lift.
Given that Eiren’s data for 2018-2019 showed earnings of 2.00 billion from admissions of 195 million, the 2021-2022 figures appear still substantially below-pre-covid levels.

Japanese studio Toei announced today that its total box office revenue reached a record Yen32.56Bn (US246.6M) for the calendar year 2022, partly thanks to the strong performances of anime blockbusters One Piece Film Red and The First Slam Dunk.

It also announced that it sold 23.65 million tickets in 2022, a year in which Japan’s box office recovered at a faster rate than many other markets in the region.
One Piece Film Red, the latest instalment in a long-running franchise, opened on August 6 last year and has since sold 13.79 million tickets and earned more than Yen19BN (US144M) in Japan alone.

The release of “Avatar: The Way of Water” in South Korea largely lived up to expectations and delivered a major boost to the final quarter’s flagging box office.
Its gross revenues between Friday and Sunday represented the second biggest opening of the year. They lifted the nationwide total to the country’s second largest weekend of 2022.
“Avatar 2” earned 19.0 million between Friday and Sunday from 2,809 screens, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). That represented a hefty 84 market share. Over the full five days since its Wednesday debut, the film earned 24.8 million.
In admissions terms, the film sold 2.03 million tickets over the weekend proper and 2.68 million over the full five-day opening period. The huge opening gave Korea a 22.7 million Friday-to-Sunday weekend.
The highest honors of the year still belong to Korean action film “The Roundup,” which opened in May with a 21.1 million Friday-Sunday debut,...

So many people in the movie business looked to 2021 as the year that was going to save the industry following the disaster that was 2020. Not quite. In truth, the recovery has been more gradual and uneven than any of us expected, though 2022 brought us much closer to something resembling normalcy. And sure, a big part of that was expected hits like "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" and "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" bringing in the big bucks. Heck, even "Halloween Ends" did over 100 million against largely negative reviews with a day-and-date release on Peacock. It was closer to business as usual and, with any luck, 2023 will be even better.
But a big part of what helped is that there were a number of surprise winners at the box office this year to go along with the likes of "Jurassic World Dominion" pulling in 1 billion. And yeah, sure, we had...

Long Japan’s cinema industry leader, Toho is poised to reassert itself in 2023 with a muscular new distribution slate, following an off-year.
One surefire reason is that anime maestro and box office king Miyazaki Hayao is bringing out his first film since the 2013 “When the Wind Rises.” Called “How Do You Live?” and inspired by a 1937 Yoshino Genzaburo novel of the same English title, the film is confirmed to open in Japan on July 14, with Toho distributing.
Details, including story and scale of release, are still in short supply, but fans are expected to crowd theaters to see what may be the 81-year-old Miyazaki’s swan-song.
Also, to commemorate the 1954 release of the Honda Ishiro classic “Godzilla,” Toho will release the next instalment of the series on Nov. 3, the same day the first-ever Godzilla opened in Japan. Other than the director, sci-fi and fantasy specialist Yamazaki Takashi, Toho has revealed little about the new film,...

China Box Office: ‘One Piece Film Red’ Wins Second Weekend as Covid Policy Overhaul Has Muted Impact
Official announcements that China is backing away from the harshest elements of the country’s strict Zero-covid policy have yet to make much difference to the country’s cinema box office. But the coming release of “Avatar: The Way of Water” may change that.
Japanese animation “One Piece Film Red” held on to top place for the second weekend in a three-day session that was lower than the previous frame.
Data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway showed “One Piece Film Red” to have scored 4.8 million (RMB33.5 million) in mainland China between Friday and Sunday, giving it a ten-day cumulative score of 18.1 million (RMB127 million).
“Detective Conan The Movie: The Bride of Halloween” took second place with 2.4 million. That advanced its cumulative to 22.7 million since releasing on Nov. 18.
“The Tipping Point” earned 1.3 million in third place. It now has a cumulative of 23.6 million since release on Nov. 11.
National Day hit film “Homecoming” added 930,000 over the weekend.

Korea Box Office: ‘The Night Owl’ Stays Top for Third Weekend as Market Awaits Arrival of ‘Avatar 2’
Korean film “The Night Owl” was the favorite in local cinemas over a quiet box office weekend. It was the third weekend win in a row for the period thriller.
“Night Owl” earned 3.65 million between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). The performance represented a strong hold as it was only 15 down on its second weekend. It also held a muscular 47 market share.
The additional business lifted the film’s nearly three-week cumulative total to 19.0 million. That makes it the tenth best-performing film of the year in Korea, behind “Thor: Love and Thunder.”
In second place for the second weekend was the Don Lee-starring comedy “Men of Plastic” which earned 710,000, a more than 50 decline from its opening session. After 12 days in cinemas, it has earned 4.03 million.

“One Piece Film Red” took the top spot at the Chinese box office over the weekend, as one Japanese anime title displaced another.
The title, the 15th in the “One Piece” film franchise based on an animated series by Oda Eiichiro, has been a huge hit in Japan and is now expanding overseas. Up to Nov. 27, it had grossed JPY18.5 billion in its native Japan, making it the to-grossing film of 2022 in the country. It also ranks as the ninth highest grossing film of all time in Japan and the sixth highest ranking anime feature.
In China, “One Piece Film Red” was given a Thursday release. It earned 7.9 million (RMB56 million) between Friday and Sunday and 10.5 million over its opening four days, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway.
“Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween,” which had held the top rank for the past two weekends, slipped to second place.

Period thriller “The Night Owl” held on to top spot at the South Korean box office for a second weekend. It delivered a strong week-to-week performance that saw off competition from a volley of new release titles and lifted the overall market.
The locally-made “Owl” earned 4.35 million between Friday and Sunday, only an 11 reduction compared with its opening weekend, according to data from Kobis, the data service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). Its market share stayed strong at 46. After 12 days on release the film has accumulated 13.4 million.
Korean-American action star Don Lee (aka Ma Dong Seok) was unable to give his latest film the same level of box office beef as his “Roundup” action titles. The new release Lee-starring comedy drama “Men of Plastic” scored 1.69 million over three days, or an 18 market share. The sappy and satisfying teen rom-dram “The Quintessential Quintupluets Movie” stands out among this year’s bumper crop of movies based on popular Japanese anime series. Much like other recent anime crossover hits, like “Jujutsu Kaisen 0” and “One Piece Film: Red,” “The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie” primarily addresses its franchise’s established audience.
You either already know who’s who and what’s already happened prior to this movie’s events, or you’re likely to get pretty lost.
That kind of insular appeal might seem like a handicap for uninitiated viewers, but several anime franchise spinoffs have already dominated the Japanese box office and enjoyed weeks-long, nationwide releases in American chain theaters and multiplexes. “The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie” also has all of the melodramatic revelations and puppy-love intrigue of the preceding anime series, based on Negi Haruba’s manga comics.

Saudi-owned Mbc Group, which is the top broadcaster in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena), is boosting anime offerings on its Shahid streaming platform by ordering up a slew of new content from several Japanese studios.

Mbc has also snapped up exclusive rights in Mena to TV Tokyo’s “Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War,” the 52-episode Japanese anime TV series that is a sequel of the “Bleach” manga series by Tite Kubo. “Bleach,” which returns following an eight-year hiatus, will drop on Shahid day-and-date with Japan and the U.S.

After three weeks at #1, it’s unlikely that “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” will have much of a problem going four weeks in a row, with only two new lower-key wide releases this week. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The widest new release is Universal’s action-comedy “Violent Night,” starring David Harbour from “Stranger Things” as a different take on Santa Claus, this one looking to protect a family from mercenary home invaders.
Although Harbour has become best known for his role as Police Chief Jim Hopper on the Netflix series, he has made a few forays into genre film releases, most notably 2019’s “Hellboy” and Marvel’s 2021 release “Black Widow.” “Hellboy” was seen as a massive bomb, only grossing 21.9 million domestically after a 12 million opening, and that was as good a test as any for Harbour as a leading man.

Period thriller “The Night Owl” lifted the South Korean box office even as “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” faded.
The locally-made “Owl” earned 4.85 million between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). Over the five days from its Wednesday debut, the 15-rated, C-JeS Entertainment-produced title earned 6.14 million.
That was enough to depose “Wakanda Forever” which enjoyed two weekends on top of the Korean chart, but took a 61 fall in its third weekend and slipped to third position. After 19 days in Korean cinemas “Wakanda” has accumulated 15.8 million, making it the 12th ranked film of the year and the sixth best-performing Hollywood title.
Unchanged in second place was Korean action film “Decibel,” albeit falling by 54 week-on-week. Over the latest weekend, it earned 1.19 million, giving it a 12-day cumulative of 5.79 million.

Netflix & Paramount+ UK To Profile ‘Strip Search Caller’
Netflix and Paramount+ have struck a first of its kind-of-deal over a true crime documentary telling the story of the strip search caller in the U.S. Paramount+ has taken UK rights to Pervert: The Hunt for the Strip Search Caller and Netflix has rest of world on the doc, which it will be calling Don’t Pick Up the Phone. The deal is believed to be the first time two streamers have worked in such a way in the UK and rest of world. The doc tells the shocking story of a hoax caller who targeted fast food restaurants across the U.S. – posing as a police officer investigating a theft, the caller instructed managers to strip-search the young female employees he said were suspects. For many victims, what began as a humiliating strip search escalated into sexual abuse.

It was only a matter of time before a movie would come along to salvage the weaker fall box office. That movie was the latest from Marvel Studios, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” once again directed by Ryan Coogler, who had to deal with the tragic 2020 death of Chadwick Boseman, who led the 1.3 billion-grossing “Black Panther” in 2018.
With a cast that includes Letitia Wright, Angela Bassett, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Dominique Thorn, Winston Duke, and Martin Freeman, “Wakanda Forever” burst into the weekend with some of the best buzz for a fall movie thanks to a fantastic trailer.

As a movie tie-in, it takes some beating. One Piece Film Red has been released as the manga comic strip on which it is based celebrates 25 years of existence and its 1000th published episode, every one of which has been authored by Eiichiro Oda, executive producer of the new film. Think about that. There are people who have grown up with One Piece which has also run as a weekly television series since 1999 — and there have been 14 films in the franchise before this one.
That adds up to a tremendous number of characters with bizarre back stories – and many millions of fans, not all of them in Japan. One Piece Film Red has topped the Japanese box office for 12 weeks, is the biggest movie of 2022 there and just opened at number two in North America.
Outside Japan, it is being promoted as a gateway experience for the uninitiated because it is a stand-alone story.

It was one of those relative "calm-before-the-storm" weekends at the box office, with many in the industry awaiting the arrival of "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" this week, which will undoubtedly put a great deal of meat in seats. This past weekend, however, "Black Adam" got to enjoy one more (albeit modest) stay atop the charts, while "One Piece Film: Red" once again proved that anime is increasingly viable in the U.S. Meanwhile, horror movies crossed milestones, and Oscar hopefuls continued to disappoint. Let's dig into the numbers, shall we?
In its third weekend, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's "Black Adam" earned another 18.5 million, per Box Office Mojo. That represents a mere 32.6 decline from the prior weekend, which is good. Though that had far more to do with an utter lack of direct competition. "Black Panther" will smother the competition this upcoming weekend and the latest DC Comics adaptation will probably see a hefty decline.

One Piece Film Red rocketed to the top of the box office chart in Saudi Arabia over the weekend, achieving the biggest-ever opening for a Japanese anime in the territory and dislodging Black Adam from the top slot.
Middle East and North Africa distributor Front Row Filmed Entertainment, which holds all rights to the film in the region, said its opening weekend in Saudi Arabia, including previews, drew 61,000 admissions for a box office of 1.04m.
The weekend runs across Friday and Saturday in the territory so the figures are calculated from Wednesday previews through to end-Saturday.
